Greetings All,

Been lurking the boards for awhile and haven't posted much as of yet. I will be starting an Eberron campaign very soon and my preliminary campaign idea deals with the Mark of Death.

From what I've pieced together from the ECS is that a couple of thousand years ago, the 13th mark was lost. The lich-queen, Vol, as the last remaining member of the House, is bent on bringing the House back to glory.

I am not sure if Mr. Baker and co. plan to introduce information about the Mark of Death, so I would like some people's input as to what they think happened. Is the 13th moon actually missing? Or is it hidden from view (somewhat akin to the moon Nuitari in DragonLance)? As a lich, Vol is unable to use the mark. Perhaps she is hoping to acheive mortality again?

It seems like everyone is gravitating to wanting to use the Mark of Death in their campaigns. I have been contemplating doing this myself. I would love to see more information about the Mark of Death.

I did find this thread in the Magic forum:

Someone actually came up with the powers granted by the Mark of Death…

I am contemplating having the PCs in my game manifest Marks of Death.

So I am looking for ideas and information. Anyone else doing this?

I was going to try out a few villains, sort of half-liches with the Mark of Death, although I was wondering myself if I could retrieve the Mark's powers from some source. I get the impression from the ECS that more info on it is going to be published, from the style that it's introduced.

This is something I was giving a LOT of thought to the other day and I came to the conclusion that there has to be some kind of correlation with either a moon or a plane (possibly both). Here is my reasoning...

There are currently 12 Dragonmarked Houses. 13 if you count the fallen house with the mark of death.

There are currently 13 planes rotating around the material. Only 12 of which ever become coterminous. DalQuor never does.

There are currently 12 moons. Do they have some correlation with the movement of the places? Was there at some point a 13? Is there still a 13 that was possible thrown into an unrocognizable orbit as a result of DalQuors position?

I believe that the Mournland has something to do with the plane of DalQuor righting itself in some fashion, and bringing back with it the 13th moon, and the mark of death.

You say that Vol is a member of this fallen house. Where did you read this? (assuming you did, because I want to read it too) If this is true perhaps he had something to do with the destruction of Cyre or the return of the mark of death.

Just some thoughts to work with....

I don't have page numbers handy at the moment. But the story goes something like this:

Between 2-3 thousand years ago, the matron of the dragon marked House of Death mated with a green dragon in hopes of spawning a child that would help bring about the end of the war between the elves and the dragons of Argonessen. Both sides were so aghast at what the matron had done, they immediately went about trying to destroy the dragonmarked house.

The matron used the last of her power to turn her daughter into a half-dragon lich. The self styled lich-queen, Vol, now plots a return of the Mark of Death and of the House of Vol.

Regarding the 12 or 13 moons, take a closer look at the quote from the section on Karrnath in "Life in the world" - the establishment of the Twelve and its citadel, the mage who created it made a very cryptic remark about how "the moons have established that 13 is the number of perfection, but we shall call ourselves the Twelve, because of the mark that was cast off long ago." WHATEVER he meant, his statement DEFINITELY points to a correlation - seems that 13 was just a VERY unlucky number to have of moons/planes/dragonmarks, because the universe didn't support it for long...

Either that or it means that 13 is the number of balance in the universe. Meaning that the prophecy will always move toward the number 13 regardless of bad or good and the inhabitants of the places of change will be forced to survive if they wish to evolve.

Keith told me on page 39 of the Ask Keith Baker Thread that the thirteenth moon is probably just hidden. And that statement about the Twelve definitely needs suggests a correlation between moons, and dragonmarks.

I eagerly await the changes in the world, and the chaos that will ensue if the thirteenth moon ever returns . . .

Actually, there are currently 13 Dragonmarked Houses. Two of them have the same mark (Shadow) and the are the same race (Elven) as the house that had the mark of death. Even more ominous.

Hmm... I like the idea of the Dreaming Dark allying with (read: using) the Order of the Emerald Claw and Vol herself to return the 13th Mark, Moon, and Plane. Brilliant.

Luckily, since none of my players visit these boards, I'm fairly safe in discussing this topic. I have also given some heavy consideration to using the Mark of Death in my campaign's storyline.

Numerous components within the Eberron setting almost seem to beg to be focused on and may really allow the return of the Mark of Death (or more importantly, stopping the Mark from being reborn) to be an excellent plotline.

The splitting of the single remaining elven House... one House using the Mark of Shadow for espionage and the other gravitating to its use for assassination... and the unconfirmed rumors of a House's shady dealings with the Order of the Emerald Claw...

The Blood of Vol serves as the perfect "master villian" plotting behind the scenes, while the Order of the Emerald Claw will work nicely providing the "generic thugs" needed.

While I haven't really fleshed out the master plan that will eventually culminate in an all or nothing, gotta stop the badguys or *insert evil cataclysmic event here* may occur... I do think it will be a fun road getting there... for both me and the players...
