house phairlan/thuranni being accepted [Archive] - Wizards Community

08-20-04, 02:58 AM going through the ask kieth baker answers I keep seeing people who have issues with the houses of shadow being accepted into various countries with known spies. I have three real-world comparisons that keep coming to mind;

1) the less valid; a modern parallel to intentionally inviting "spies" in would be journalists. as a certain american journalist proved during a recent conflict when dealing with journalists you are intentionally inviting spies into your midst.

2) Jane's. if you know what this is you know why impartial organizations that freely distribute classified information can be tolerated.

3) there are some who think that televisions are/could be/should be equipped with video/sound transmission so that the [your favorite conspiricy group] can monitor the populous. What would the real effect be if the government outlawed all TVs because they thought that [insert hostile government or group] was using these feeds?

I'm tired, so I apologize if this isn't terribly coherant.

08-20-04, 03:44 AM I recall reading somewhere that most people have no idea what the Shadow houses really do, they just see them as entertainers and the like. Granted the higher ups wouls know what they really do but for them i suppose having known spys about is better than having unknown spys. Also, there really isnt any difference (historically speaking) between an embassador or diplomat and a public spy, and governments have tolerated them for centuries.

Look at modern ambassadors. They are needed for countries to survive and yet there is always the knowledge that they will confidentially transmit back any information they stumble across and in some offices you will have active inteligence operatives.
Intelligence services always need to be in communication with each other, their resources are limited and it is far better to ask assistance from a country or group that focuses on that area. I could easily see Agents of the Citadel asking House Phairlan for assistance because they are unable to get agents into certain area, or simply because the House might have information on something the Citadel does not have time to look into.
Kaius III receives an emissary of House Phairlan. The House is going to be arranging a celebration for some Great War Victory(Perhaps the destruction of WhiteBridge). Kaius is fully aware that House Phairlan holds intelligence operatives and tightens his internal security. However because he uses the house from time to time to thwart Emerald Claw agents he allows the house in, in fact he arranges a meeting to discuss current claw movements with the house both parties freely exchanging info. Unbeknownst to him though Aundair has paid the house to figure out what Kaius's intentions are to Thrane and so while Kaius benefits from the arrival of the house he also is in danger of espionage. However he will not expose the House to the common person as he needs their ability to move freely among the populace for his own purposes. Even if he did expose the one agent the house will quickly move to plant information showing the agent to be a 'rogue' in their midst's and condemn his actions.
