How can I get my PC's to change from FR to Eberron? [Archive] - Wizards Community

All right here it is, I've been DMing a game every Tuesday for almost two years now. When we started playing it was decided that Forgotten Realms was the best choice for the game because it has thirty years of gaming history. About five months ago I picked up the Eberron Campaign setting and have been intrigued, but I can't convince my players to change settings. So here I am asking for ways to help get my Players to switch.

Tell them to read the ECS?
It worked for everybody else.

Just tell them you want to run a short Eberron campaign and if they don't like the setting you can switch back. If your the one DMing you get to decide what campaign to run.

You've been playing the same campaign for two years without a break. Tell them you want to take a break from that story for, oh... a month. That's all. Just a couple of sessions to try out Eberron, and then back to the old story.

With any luck, those three - four sessions will have them hooked, and they'll never ask about the old game again. :D

Do they have any complaints about Eberron?
Or is it more based on that they like playing their current characters that they don't want to give them up?

You can allways have them shunted through the planes of existence into Eberron, with their current characters.
Stuff like that happens all the time in FR, right?

Just prepare for them to want to go back.

:plotting: I think, the 'ask them to try it for a month' option is the best.

 If they are too attached to their old characters.... That's nothing a TPK can't solve :evillaugh

Say you're tired with the FR campaign. End it with a bang. Then if they want to keep playing DnD with you as DM, it has to be an Eberron campaign.

It depends. Are they saying, "No, I don't want to do that, FR is working just fine for us." Or, is it more like, "Screw that place! Goth-y eves?!? What kind of crap is that?!?" If one or more of them is taking a stand against it on philosophical (read PREJUDICIAL) grounds, there probably isn't anything you can do. Years ago I tried to get a group to try out Al-Quadim, but Op Desert Shield was still fresh in one players mind, so he got upset, and it never happened. Like everything else, it's a balancing act. If they are reasonable people, I think you should be able to get them to give it a try, with the understanding that if they don't like, you can all go back to FR.

All right I've talked to my players and I told them that i was going to run an eberron campaign with or without them. At first they objected now two of my players say they wont come because it is to much like final fantasy with airships and crystals. But the rest say they will give it a run. Now the question is which campaign should I run to get them hooked?

You can start with the Forgotten Forge series, or you can just make your own short adventure.

Well, now that you are committed to this course of action, I recommend the Forgotten Forge. I had a blast gaming in that adventure.

Just a heads up that Sharn by itself can distract players. We as players didn’t know much about Sharn and so we really taxed our DM with questions about the place because his general descriptions were pretty cool and sent our imaginations spinning.

On the other hand don’t go overboard on describing everything unless they ask for more info; you don’t want to bore them right out of the campaign!

So good luck and happy fun gaming.

That's the way to do it. I might've told them we'll come back FR if you don't like Eberron after a few weeks, but that's just a ruse to get them to try Eberron.

And FR is too much like Tolkien's Middle Earth(which is based off of other things to begin with), in more ways than Eberron is like Final Fantasy..or anything else for that matter.

Good luck with Eberron, the published adventures are great, but adapting movie/book plots to Eberron is interesting to do, and quite easy depending on what material you pick. I'm kind of toying around with the idea of a CSI: Sharn campaign right now...

At first they objected now two of my players say they wont come because it is to much like final fantasy with airships and crystals.

Wait... but final fantasy is pretty much about the airships and crysta...
oh, ok, sorry. >.<

... I never noticed it before, but you're right. o.O If you're looking at the traditional, old-skewl FF's, and especially Ivalice, the world of the two Tactics games and the new FFXII... yeah, actually, Eberron is rather similar to the Final Fantasy 'verse. You've got airships, crystals, pulp action, gigantic crazy plots to destroy the 'verse as we know it, robots, "magitek", wheels within wheels intruige, and the whole idea that the PCs are the heroes, not anyone else.

But on the other hand there's also a lot that's very different from Final Fantasy. There isn't one BBEG who's trying to destroy everything, there's a LOT and they're not necessarily connected to each other. There's old-fashioned film-noir intrigue , which is lacking in the FF 'verses. There's psionics. Magic and religion work VERY differently than FF. Races are very different (I can't even name the last FF that had an elf, or a dwarf o.O)

And most of all... it's Dungeons and Dragons. This means that your characters can go wherever they want, do whatever they want, and become whoever they want. In Final Fantasy, there's one plot, one track, and you can't stray from it (name one FF game where you could get a significantly different ending based on plot. I'm talking Dark Side ending vs Light Side ending of KOTOR here, not who Cloud got to date or the ending you got for FFX-2, which shouldn't even be considered a final fantasy >.< ) In Dungeons and Dragons, there's limitless possibility.

I guess in the end, what I'm trying to say is that while Eberron and Final Fantasy share some similarities in spirit, genre, and technology, Eberron is really only as FF or not FF as you make it... just as with any DnD. Hell... Forgotten Realms is only as Tolkien or non-Tolkien as you make it! And I can even see an insane DM somehow making FR into Final Fantasy...

The similarities to Final Fantasy are what got me interested in Eberron. During the initial previews in Dragon Magazine, I was one of those "Ew! Trains and dinosaurs!" people.

When the web articles started being posted and there was a significant amount of art available - including airships and warforged - I was hooked. A friend and I spent entire days in our office discussing the possibility of airship pirate PCs and how cool it would be to play a kalashtar.

There are currently ideas from FFXII that we are trying to work into our house rules and pieces of the game's plot I am considering stealing for our game.

The Final Fantasy feel that can be present if a DM or group makes it that way is pretty awesome, in my opinion. But it isn't a keystone of the setting, either. You can take away a few of those "Final Fantasy-esque" details without wholly diluting the core tone of the campaign. And it's that versatility that makes Eberron pretty much the best campaign setting out there.

Well I think first you need to figure out what it is that your players don't like about Eberron. Saying that it's too much like Final Fantasy, doesn't really say what it is that they don't like about Eberron. What you need to figure out is what it is that they don't like about Final Fantasy. If you can do that, then you can minimize those elements. For example, they say they don't like the idea of flying ships and crystals. Okay, then maybe Sharn isn't the place for them. However, that doesn't mean that the Lhaazar Principalities are out, or Thrane, or Q'Barra. These are all lands that are naturally a part of Eberron, and yet these elements are either downplayed or nonexistent. Talk to your players about it and see what they say.

The next thing you need to do is figure out what your players like about playing Dungeons and Dragons and see if you can find a way to accommodate those likes. After all, Eberron is designed appeal to a myriad of different playing styles. If your players are interested in epic adventures, then have them travel to Argonessen, Droaam, or the Demon Wastes. If they're more into dungeon crawling, and treasure hunting, then send them to the lands of Xen'Drik. The key is, you need to get your players to articulate what it is that they like about playing Dungeons & Dragons. Once you do that, I'm sure you can find a way to make that work in Eberron.

It would be fun to start a new campaign from scratch in Sharn.

Sharn is soo huge... you could easily run a campain just within the confines of the city. I ran the Forgotten Forge campaign. It helps if the players have a reason for being together. Make a point of setting the group up as a sort of freelance mercenary group or investigative business. That way they know that they have a common back-ground before you drop them right into the adventure.

Warning on the "forgotten forge" in the back of the ECS. Dire rats eat through 1st lvl hack and slash types. Be prepared for tpk. When some one gets the bright idea to use oil and fire on the swarm, don't let some smart guy stand in the middle swarm afterwards, getting roasted alive while swating inafectually at said swarm. If any of the above happens and said party dosen't include a healer of any kind. Make sure they actually go to the abandonded temple of the SH. Don't let them go to the Cannith building without healing first. Make sure the tank is the first thing down into the Cannith house. This is assuming that the party even made its spots to see the gaurd dogs. There is nothing like watch the 2nd gen dwarf cleric in full plate die to the mechnical doggies....

I've never gamed with anybody I didn't already know. I hung out at the comic store once, talked to people in the Roleplaying section, and god almighty, they're not just on a different wavelength from me, they're really annoying. There's either the elitist guy (http://www.ibizaholidays.com/snooty-fox/images-snooty-fox/snooty-fox-bar.gif), the girl who wants to play unicorns/dragons (http://sg.geocities.com/mental_89/blogskins/MY_little_pony.jpg), or the System of a Down (http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/39770000/jpg/_39770579_downs203.jpg) fan who thinks he's crazy.

Seriously.

Sometimes, I consider putting out an open call: "DM looking for group of 3-4 for Eberron in York Area." But I know I'd get creeps who want to play half-celestial/half-dogs and have creepy furry angel sex with my NPC's. Or I'd get some sociopath who breaks the DM's femur when he fails an appraise check.

You wouldn't, by some stretch of the imagination, be talking about York, PA, would you? If so, please PM me! I might be looking to replace a player or two in the near future... and a swap-off of DMing duties is certainly well within the realm of possibilities. I've hand-picked my group to specifically avoid these kind of people, and I've done a pretty good job of keeping them out thus far. (Although I do still have a power-gamer in the group, he knows I read the CO boards, so he can't get away with anything truly broken at my table.)

"This game will require you to use your brain. If all D&D is to you is a combat game, this game is not for you. If your entire grasp of combat is "I charge it, and keep hitting it until it stops moving", then this game is not for you. If you need 3 base classes and 5 PrC before you think you have a playable character, this game is not for you. If you think every last session has to involve somebody rolling dice, this game is not for you. If you think it is your inalienable right to use whatever class, feat, spell, or race you have ever seen in any D&D book ever printed, then this game is not for you. If you think your character has to have sex with every NPC in the setting, then this game is not for you."

Then tack on things like "If you think coming to the game drunk is acceptable, this game is not for you." or whatever else you prefer, and you should be good to go. If, at a later time, they turn out to be idiots, you get to point back that you specifically told them that the game wasn't for them, and tell them not to come back.

On the atlas of Toril, several continents on the other side of the planet from Faerun are drawn out that do not have ANY information in ANY source. They are labeled "Unknown Lands" on the map.

Take one of those continents, and with a Sharpie write "Khorvaire." Then take a crayon, and draw out the general boundaries of the various nations on that continent.

An evil super-mega-epic wizard from Faerun that the party runs into (heck, that happens every other day in FR) uses telekinesis to push the party through a portal in his evil lair. They pop out in the streets of Sharn.
