How did the dragonmarks work in EotLQ? [Spoilers] [Archive] - Wizards Community

Hi all,

In my upcoming game, all of my players are going to be connected in-game via a horrific event in their common past (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=938429) (bet you can guess what that is, given what forum we're in...). As part of this, there should be some physical sign to help draw them together and possibly to help them locate others like them after one of the PCs dies and the player needs to get another character into the group.

I thought aberrant dragonmarks would be a great way to do this, for a few reasons:
Makes them an interesting part of the Draconic prophecy
Gives them something to hide, and makes them fugitives of sorts---not just in the usual "oh noes Emerald Claw agents are coming to get me!" but instead in that the have to be very careful about interacting with dragonmarked houses, and their allies (which is pretty much everyone)
Creates the potential for an alliance with that-house-whose-name-I-can't-remember, which always seemed like a fun and flavorful affiliation
Lets the threat of a new War of the Mark loom over the campaign, so that the PCs are not only discovering their horrific past, but also trying to escape a horrific future (which may even be part of the Prophecy!)

Now, there are a few problems that could present themselves: what if one of them isn't of a dragonmarked race? What if one of them's a warforged? What if one of them already has a dragonmark? Etc.

I remember, from the previews on the Wizards site and my brief flip-through of EotLQ in a bookstore, that something similar happened to the PCs after they exited some temple, and all of these problems were dealt with in the text. Could I get someone to outline what happens there? I'm interested in both the flavor---what the PCs see happening, how fast, etc.---and the DM side, such as the problems described above.

(Edit) Also, I'm interested in discussion on how they should manifest. Should they all have them already, and be drawn together by this common thread? (Or forced to stick together, after being drawn together by something else.) Should they manifest in times of stress? If the latter, then how do I get them to manifest on all the PCs at roughly the same time?

I like the idea of telling each player about their aberrant dragonmark out of character, and leaving them with the in-character choice of whether or not to reveal the power, and if so when. Do you have modifications of/expansions on this idea?

non-dragonmarked races receive a special altered form of aberrant dragonmark.

already dragonmarked characters have their mark twisted slightly.

that's as much as i can say without breaking the rules of my conscience and/or the CoC
