Okay, this is going to sound very strange, but I swear every word of it is true.

RoE came out yesterday, but I didn't have the money for it right now, so I figured I'd just have to wait. Today, I was mowing grass, and out of nowhere they payed me $50 for doing it (they NEVER pay me for that). Cool I thought, RoE money!

I get home, I call my FLGS and ask if they have any copies left (they usually sell out pretty fast), they said no, but they'd have more tomorrow. I say cool, they take my name and say they'll put one back for me out of the new batch. I sit down to eat, and the phone rings. Its my FLGS. They said while they were putting the hold back behind the counter, they found a copy of RoE with my name already on it. I naturally thinkg "Wtf? Oh well, good luck shines on me today!" and tell them I'll be right down.

I get there, they ring it up and tell me it'll be $32.74 (or something like that). I look in my wallet, I've got the $50 in twenties and a ten. And three one dollar bills. Exact whole change, don't have to break a $20, equally cool.

Pull out on the normally busy Lee Highway, no traffic. Sweet, this is my lucky day! I pull off onto the on-ramp to the highway, which happens to be on an unguarded embankment which drops off sharply to the highway below (Lee Highway takes an overpass over the highway).

I'm half way through the turn (took it a little fast), my nose pointing right at the cliff, and my engine dies. The engine dying also means the power steering cuts out. I suddenly find myself doing 30 mph or so right towards a steep enbankment that dead ends into a major interstate. Oh :censored:...

So, I barely managed to slam the wheel around in time to stay on the road and manage to get the engine re-cranked as I nearly get rear-ended by the guy behind me.

I don't know what fates were conspiring to get me to that blasted turn just so they could send me plummeting off it, but at least I got a good story about how Races of Eberron nearly cost me my life. :)

Sounds like you have a cursed copy. Trying to lure you into buying it so that it can finish you off.

You should get rid of it immediately. I'll send you my mailing address...

Oh no, Gurv. That's noble of you, but totally unneeded. He can send it to me, and I'll take care of the curse.

Just shows how great Eberron is.

It offers both imaginary adventure, and real life adventure.

I offered first, and I insist that the burden be placed on me. It is the least I can do to protect my fellow Eberron players.

Someone should write an adventure based on this, something about a cursed book that tries to lure its readers to their doom...

Gurv, jonthegm, while you are noble beings you are merely human, only I am able to take care of this curse for I am filled with divine powers (as prophesied by the runes) and according to lore from the far east I'll reach complete enlightment in my next life. This copy was destined to be bought by Edymnion so it could be put under controll by me...

Dragonic Prophesy says I should be given it. Edymnion is such a wonderful and brillant person, of course he would give it to me. I mean no one is more perfect than him. :angelhide

Well, Joni-san, I shall have to step up to prevent your enlightenment from being disrupted.

Only I have the power to contain this cursed tome. I shall simply rename the book "Races of Greyhawk", and its curse shall be broken. Then it goes back to Edy, and the balance shall be maintained.

Heck, I'll just do it from here.

You're the proud owner of "Races of Greyhawk", Edy, a completely uncursed and undarkpowerscoated volume.

(Edit: 'sides, why would *I* want it? I already have a copy, an uncursed one at that.)

Edy: I don't think you missed anything although the number of missed items/errors could explain why your book keeps trying to kill you :P
Pre-emptive self defense? :P

Yes, that is exactily it. ;)

Hmm. The book should have a big, simple geometric shape on the cover and be related to a scary little girl whose hair always hides her face. Maybe we could call the story "The Square".
It's not like it's been done for any other medium, has it?...Has it?

Ah, random Eberron insanity, how could I live without thee? These are the things that make life worth living.

The curse can only be lifted by placing the book on the Altar of Purification. I happen to have one in my basement, but it's protected by a circle of death spell keyed to let only me through.

So, Edy..if you just send it over my way, I'll be sure to send it back when it's cleansed. :angelhide

Hmm, it seems that I was not the only one who experienced a near death while trying to attain RoE.

The most direct route to my gaming store is about 3 minutes down Highway 63 from where I live. The traffic is usually bad, but I take this route almost every day for work, so I am pretty used to it.

Well, on Friday, I was in a nicely spaced line of cars going onto the on-ramp. Everyone was accelerating perfectly, and I had plenty of room between me and the green van ahead of me. So I took a quick look to the left to see how the traffic was in the actually highway. Unusually light for that time of day.

I turned back to look ahead (it was no more than a second, if that), and see that the green van ahead of me had

Stopped

Completely.

I had to slam on my breaks, causing that lovely tire screech that everyone enjoys hearing. I managed to stop maybe a foot from the van, but only because I'm generally a cautious driver and always keep my distance with cars in or getting onto the highway. The car directly behind me didn't stop fast enough, but he managed to pull off onto the shoulder of the on-ramp and sat there beside me. The driver of the car that was oh-so-recently behind me turned and looked at me with a wide-mouthed shocked look that I'm sure I shared. The other cars behind us stopped as well, and in a matter of heartbeats, the entire highway on-ramp was reduced to a McDonald's drive-thru during lunch break.

Then the van calmly pulled off into the highway, while everyone else tried to untangle themselves from the sudden stop in traffic. After that, I made my way, SLOWLY, to my local gaming store, bought some books and ranted to the guy I knew who was currently minding the store. He found it funny, and eventually, I did too.

Never saw a reason as to why the van stopped. I nearly crashed into a van and had another car crash into me, and I will probably never know why.

Quoth my dad upon hearing the incident "Must have spilled his beer."

Then it'll be some poor customs officer that'll suffer from the RoE curse. :P

New magic item:
Races of Eberron, of DOOM
In every way simular to the normal book, this version will mysteriously appear into your life and for as long as you have it in your possesion weird accidents will seem to happen, in the end costing your life.

Say Edy, did you have to use an AP to make that reflex save vs. Cliffs?

When suddenly, 13 days after Edy bought his RoE book it disappears never to return again. It is only rumored to exist somewhere on the outskirts of the suburbs where it feasts on small mechanical units.

Either that, or the Mark of Death is hidden in the book somewhere ...
