| elaith1906-30-04, 06:28 AM | Just read the news regarding the map of Eberron contained in Dungeon issue #113. Another damn blank map. Darn. Let me specify that I love the Eberron CS up to now but..... When will we have a professional looking map of Khorvaire WITH CITIES?!?!? It would certainly help to get a better view of all those nations instead of those little maps in the ECS..... Sorry about that..... Just ranting..... Still can't believe it..... |
| Doppleganger06-30-04, 07:18 AM | Ya, it's a strange thing that they've done here. A marked continental map sure would be helpful in fixing some anomalies. Like the Darguun minimap not showing you that the wall of mist exists directly across the river from Warden Keep. That seems darned important. Also the Mournland map seems to indicate that Lyrenton is beyond the mist, in the Field of Ruins, which would also be nice to know when you're planning adventures using the Darguun map. Or the Breland minimap missing a road north from Xandrar to Arcanix. And you also miss out on the fact that there's a town a few miles east of Xandrar across the river! The road goes there too, in fact there's a north/south road that goes down alongside Orcbone and links up with the eastern road leading into Droaam! This road is arguably inside Breland anyway, and you miss out completely if you look at either the Breland or Droaam maps, it's only the Eldeen Reaches map that clues you in on this road. And where does the road east from Kennrun go? (you have to look at 3 maps just to check, but it shows up nowhere beyond Breland). You might say that roads end at the grey mist, but the Mournland map shows a different road east from Vathirond, so at least one road apparently exists. The Darguun map shows yet another trade road winding deep through the Mournland as it twists northward, but this same doesn't show up on the Mournland map?? I could go on and on. Oh, I'm sure I could make some stuff up on the fly and just say "adventurers and cartographers have brought back mixed reports of the geography in these areas". But it sure would be nice if the setting provided a solid map as a base reference point, then I could make changes to it if I needed (rather than what we have here, which is the reverse, you MUST insert changes on the fly if you want the world to make sense) |
| elaith1906-30-04, 08:09 AM | Well, I suppose I've become accustomed to having a map giving me a bird's view of any new Campaign Setting. And for all the positive things I have to say about Eberron, the only negative one that really bothers ME, is the map. How much time are we going to wait before a quality map is brought to us? In my mind, this is a pretty big omission on WoTC's part. I just hope there is a reason for it. |
| Rulandor06-30-04, 08:17 AM | I too would like to see a detailed and labelled map of Khorvaire - showing not only the cities, but also how the lightning rail lines connect across national borders. Although it is possible to check up leafing to and fro through the ECS book, it would be so very convenient to see it all on a glance. |
| Taurren06-30-04, 09:24 AM | Elaith, where did you read about the map in Dungeon being "blank" ? Its not that I dont believe you ... but if that is really the case, then I can feel a RANT starting to brew. Hellcow ... is there anything you can tell us regarding the continuing concerns that some gamers have with the lack of any really usable map for ECS? |
| Rauol_Duke06-30-04, 09:27 AM | The map is discussed on a thread on ENWorld here: http://www.enworld.org/forums/showthread.php?t=92922 |
| elaith1906-30-04, 09:32 AM | >>Elaith, where did you read about the map in Dungeon >>being "blank" ? I read that this morning on EN World's boards. Some guy over there received his copy of issue #113 and specified that the Eberron Map contained inside was about the same as the one in the ECS. Wich is, no city names, no nation's names, just 'beautiful' , verdant hills, rugged mountains and more of the like...... >>Its not that I dont believe you ... but if that is really the case, >>then I can feel a RANT starting to brew. Well, I would suggest that you start ranting right now. If enough people start to do the same right now, maybe we will be treated to a map that's rightfully ours....... Anyway, when's the last time you saw a new CS without a map worth it's salt?!?!?! |

| kildaere00706-30-04, 10:00 AM | Ok, I will try to rescue you guys...because.... .....I have a labled map (it is "almost" finished (I stopped working on it when I found out about the map comming in Dungeon...but now....ack! I just need a day or two to polish it up. I am new here...is there a PM system so that I don't have to post my e-mail?...if so, maybe we could work out something where I could e-mail it to you. Unless it is against the CoC. Anyhow, lets work something out. |
| Ashrem Bayle06-30-04, 10:08 AM | You've got to be kidding me..... *sigh* Just sent you a PM, kildaere007. |
| elaith1906-30-04, 10:23 AM | Just learned that the map does bear the name of countries but that's it. Still doesn't make the cut for me though. kildaere007, if you can provide a quality map, I will be very grateful to you. Hell, I would even pay $5 to make sure I have something worth it!!! |
| Sebby06-30-04, 11:51 AM | Originally posted by elaith19 Anyway, when's the last time you saw a new CS without a map worth it's salt?!?!?! Dragonlance? That also provoked some very justified ranting back then. Ranting that, although very satisfying to the ranter and to those who agree (and boy, AM I one of you!), obviously did NOT work. I fear this new "no maps" policy is here to stay. What I suggest is this: tell it to Customer Service. Don't be insulting, don't flame; just tell them you disaprove of this, and that you would have paid for a product including such a map. Customer service link (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=company/feedbackform) Cheers, |
| Doppleganger06-30-04, 12:19 PM | Ya I PMd ya too kildaere. |
| SCMrks06-30-04, 03:29 PM | When you do use multiple regional mini-maps to make connections or plan routes, keep in mind that the maps are at different magnifications but the bars used to measure miles are the same. So a map with larger magnification will show something ,such as a forest or route between places, to be larger or longer than a map with smaller magnification. For example, there is a forest west of lake Brey and Sword Keep. On the Breland map it measures about 175 miles long north to south. On the Aundair map it measures about 250 miles. So if you are planning a travel route across maps you may have some guesstimating to do about how far your objective really is. |

I checked other maps too, and the scales don't add up either. The same forests in Breland are bigger than in Zilargo by about 23%. Maybe we are just nitpicking here, but that is sloppy nonetheless. 'Would not have that bug with a continental map... |
| kildaere00706-30-04, 06:23 PM | Ok, I got some PMs and will check on the state of the map when I get home tonight...I was originally making it for use in my own campaign and I need to make sure I can make it downloadable. It will be in pdf format (the background downloaded from here and then annotated in a vector drawing program). My main concern will be file size. I will post a status report tonight. I think I stopped labeling with only 3-4 countries to go. So with luck I might finish it tonight! |
| kildaere00706-30-04, 06:24 PM | Oh yea and I will slap a scale on it to (which will make Lightning Rail travel calcs...MUCH easier)! |
| kildaere00707-01-04, 12:50 PM | Map STATUS! Ok I dug up the map and restarted work on it....I have 3 countries to add and will be working on it at lunch and when I get home from work tonight.....I am starting to have ideas though (a dangerous thing).....I -WILL- get the map in a working state for people first... ...But then I might try and add things like being able to turn on/off political borders and other features, and updates with added towns from future supplements etc....anyhow I will depend on Adobe Acrobat's capabilities and my time to add more features. |
| kildaere00707-01-04, 05:07 PM | MAP STATUS NEW!! Ok, good news and bad news. First the bad: I can't use the map I was making as the file size would be too big. I "could" jpeg the entire thing but that would not do what I wanted it for. The Good: I am well on the way to re-creating the map by hand (the file will be a vector based pdf for those wanting to know). I got the hard part done (coastline) and am now adding features and labeling things. For me this has a few benefits. 1. I am not using WoTC's artwork anymore...this would be a true "fan" map now, so I am hoping they would have less of a problem with it's distribution (even with it being free). 2. It will be smaller in size for someone to host. I will be working with a fan site to host the file for download. 3. The map will be AWESOME! I think you will love it. I won't be as artsy as the one in the book, but it will have its own style and be very functional! 4. I plan to have the artwork done by 7/6....so just wait a few more days :). |
| Takasi07-01-04, 05:09 PM | Sounds great, can't wait to see it! :D |
| JohnnyONeal07-01-04, 05:17 PM | kildaere, your PM box is full, so I'll just let you know here that hosting is no problem. The smaller the file size, the better, but I don't have a specific limit. It might be cool to offer it at a couple of download size options. I'll be out of town for a few days, so I look forward to seeing the map next week! |
| Aremedis07-01-04, 05:26 PM | Cool, we really look forward to seeing your hard work kildaere. If you need a mirror host, I can offer my site. |
| Taurren07-01-04, 05:46 PM | Thanks for all you are doing kildaere! As a fan of Eberron and a GM struggling to put together a detailed campaign, this will really be a help. Its just too bad that WotC didn't think we actually needed one. |
| kildaere00707-01-04, 07:03 PM | Cool, Johnny! Yea if you could host it, that would be great. I will let you know when it is complete. |
| kildaere00707-04-04, 04:09 AM | THE FAN MAP IS DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I need to put a border on it and and polish up some of the labels (and proof it one last time). I think Johnny Oneal is going to host the map on his Eberron Journal Site (but he is out of town?) soooo....I didn't know that before I deleted everybody's PMs. If you want the map before Johnny gets a chance to host it, give me a PM (again...sorry...and my box is empty "now";)) and I will e-mail it to you. I tried not to alter the information from the maps, except where roads didn't line up, etc....I wanted this to be as accurate as an "unofficial" fan map could be....you know so it could be of actual use to those of us planning games :) ...I really want Eberron to be as awesome as possible and I hope my map helps. Ok here is some tech info....The file is a 1.63 MB PDF file and it is FULLY vector information (yes I am insane and I redrew the entire map)...as such the map has my own "spin" it for use in my campaign. The map is exactly proportional to the unlabled one you can download from Wizards....so being that it is vector information you "could" overlay on the official map. Since most people have 11x17 printers or smaller, the page is set up to print 11x17. But because it is vector info you "could" blow it up as large as you want with no loss of resolution. I will try to start sending them out on Sunday 7/4. Happy 4th of July! |
| elaith1907-04-04, 09:38 AM | Hi there Kildaere!! Unfortunately, I can't seem to be able to PM you, your box being mysteriously full again!!! So, if you wish, can you send me your map to elaith@sympatico.ca ? I look forward to seeing it and will let you know what I think about it. Once again, thank you very much!! .....Steeve |
| Doppleganger07-04-04, 10:37 AM | Sounds great, I can't wait to see it. I sent you a PM from my LeapingShark account. Once I get a copy, I'll make a much smaller jpg conversion too. |
| storyguide307-04-04, 11:44 AM | I too have been unable to PM you. My email is bjohnston@roadrunner.nf.net Brad |
| darksmurf07-04-04, 12:34 PM | More then happy to help getting this interactive map out to the fans of Eberron. I just don't understand how a GM is to create continent spanning adventures when one does not have a decent map to work from. Seriously does a roleplaying aficionado who does not love detailed maps even exist?! So here is my email if you would like to send me the map too. I'll post it on my eberron fansite I'm working on. eberron@shaw.ca |
| kildaere00707-04-04, 02:15 PM | I sent out the maps. Also My "inbox" was cleared but my "sent" box was full you should be able to PM me again....But I was able to find (I think) almost all the original PMs...so everone that asked (and provided an email)...should have the map. I will set up an e-mail where you can respond with changes and errors (I am SURE that I made some). But for now I am done. The next version of the map will be for errata and error correction and I may add political boundaries (tentative as Wizards seems to think they are) :) I hope you find the map useful. Ps. Johnny I sent the map to your Yahoo account (is that where you want it?) Enjoy, Kildaere |
| Latif Khan07-04-04, 02:36 PM | WOW, anyone looking for a map of khorvaire, get this one !!! its complete, it looks great, just get it !!! GREAT JOB Kildaere :D :D :D :D :behold: :behold: :behold: :behold: |
| nevcoup07-04-04, 03:46 PM | Thank you so much. Maybe Wizards can look to you for help when they come around to making a map. I'm thinking yours will be the "official" one for some time! |
| kildaere00707-04-04, 04:29 PM | That would be nice....and I think it is fairly accurate. I just hope there are not a ton of spelling errors...some of those names...sheesh! I do plan to do updates. So until a system for that is in place, if you find an error, just post it here. FOO! I just noticed that I forgot the scale!!! oh well Version 1.2 won't be that far behind. |
| nevcoup07-04-04, 06:16 PM | I love the detail...you can magnify to 1600% and it is sharp. But whenever I want to print it keeps doing 1 page:rolleyes::angel: |
| The_Declaration07-04-04, 06:48 PM | i'll wait til it's hosted somewhere, but thx for the job Kildaere ;) |
| Doppleganger07-04-04, 10:37 PM | Great job! :pile: This is really useful for Eberron readers. Thanks for your work. |
| Ronin8407-04-04, 10:43 PM | And that says it all! |
| Latif Khan07-05-04, 09:42 AM | Hmm for 1.2 how about Nation borders, perhaps it would look a bit crowded so 2 versions might be better, one political one geographical map ! |
| Kaverael07-05-04, 12:54 PM | Once again your box is full, so if you could e-mail it to me I would be grateful. rngrrck@yahoo.com |
| EmissaryOfLight07-05-04, 02:12 PM | I would really love to get this map. If you could email it to mysterford@yahoo.com that would be great. Thanks in advance. |
| TheOneRonin07-05-04, 03:08 PM | I would much appreciate a copy of your map. Let me know if you need me to PM my request to you. Send map to chris.louviere@ieminc.com Thanks again! |
| ChronosCrow07-05-04, 03:24 PM | thanks a bunch. zzgotenkszz@yahoo.com |
| Sancus07-05-04, 05:33 PM | I'd love to have this map. And I'll host it, as well, for that matter, if you send it to sancus@off.net Thanks :) |
| Aremedis07-05-04, 05:37 PM | kildaere007, Your PM box is full again.... please send me a copy of the map to aremedis@dragonfear.org Once I get it I'll post it on my server as a mirror host. |
| Sancus07-05-04, 05:39 PM | bleh double post |
| Gorey07-05-04, 05:46 PM | I'd love a copy of your map, kildaere007. jon.mcgee@comcast.net Sounds like it really should get hosted somewhere so you can concentrate on updating it as opposed to distributing it, however ;) Thanks! |
| Starkad07-05-04, 07:16 PM | Hey I can finally post again! Any chance I can get a copy of this map also, Kildaere? :) starkad@gmail.com |
| lordconservative07-05-04, 08:13 PM | I'd also like to have this map! lordconservative@hotmail.com |
| kildaere00707-05-04, 08:31 PM | WOW! great response..... (I have still to hear from Johnny about hosting the map) so for now I will continue to e-mail. I have not heard from anybody about errata (you all just seem happy to have a working map :)...concerning the fan map, and I have found 1 error so far and have fixed it for version 1.2 (see item 3 below). I am now sending version 1.2 out (that is one reason for the backlog). For version 1.2: 1. Added political boundaries and names 2. Added a Scale * (see below) 3. Added The Seven Caves (in Darguun) *** about the scale....it should come as no surprise that several of the scales from map to map do not match (and I don't just mean that they are different ie: 400, 500, 1000 miles). I mean they are wrong in several places...for example the Aundair map on on page 137 of the ECS book; the Aundair map lists the distance from the southwestern tip of the forest above Lake Brey to the center of the first mountain west of Cragwar as about 500 miles. If you compare the overlapping area on the Breland map using the provided scale on page 143 you will see that 500 miles will just barely get you to Cragwar...meaning that one of the maps is "off" what looks like about 100 miles....so I did some comparisons and: 1. Aundair, Darguun, Droaam, Eldeen Reaches, Mror Holds, Q'barra, Shadow Marshes, Thrane, and Zilargo seem to match up. 2. Breland, Demon Wastes, Lhazarr, Mournland seem off a lot. 3. Karrnath and Valenar are off a little bit 4. The "big" map on page 135 most closely matches group #1 ....so the listed scale on the fan map should be the scale from the "big" map on page 135 of the ECS. Anyhow.....I will start sending them out.... ...and JohnnyONeal?…..hows the map hosting coming? |
| peterson07-05-04, 09:02 PM | Hopefully Johnny will host cause the one you emailed me isn't working my friend! Thanks for the email though. Peterson |
| Klintus Fang07-05-04, 09:02 PM | Add me to your distribution list if you can: jchamberx@yahoo.com on the subject of hosting... how big is this thing? I could stick it up temporarily using the space that my ISP provides me if it isn't too big... |
| berixx07-05-04, 09:12 PM | I hate to bother you by jumping on the bandwagon, but I also would love a copy of your map. Many thanks! berixx@yahoo.com |
| kildaere00707-05-04, 09:24 PM | Hmmm Peterson, not working?...do you have the latest version of Acrobat? available here : http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html It should work. |
| peterson07-05-04, 09:34 PM | Duh! I should have realized that! Thanks man! Now to see if it works! Peterson |
| Eltarren07-05-04, 09:34 PM | I'd appreciate a copy of your map also. dallasb@myway.com Thanks. |
| NekoWorldOrder07-05-04, 09:38 PM | Tried to PM you, but your box is full again. Guess you must be pretty popular now-a-days? :D Could you send a copy to me at nekoworldorder@yahoo.com please? I'd be very appreciative. |

| kildaere00707-06-04, 11:37 AM | Thanks Everybody! Now we can concentrate on running games in this great setting! |
| Mythtify07-06-04, 12:59 PM | Great job. Thanks. |
| Laslo Tremaine07-06-04, 01:55 PM | Ahhh! A fine double post! And on my first try too! |
| Laslo Tremaine07-06-04, 01:55 PM | First off... Fantastic Job!!!!! This rocks. You're the best! That being said, I do have a tiny bit of errata... The country in the southwest of Khorvaire is the Shadow Marches not marshes... I know it's swampy and all, but... ;) Once again, thanks for the great map! |
| Jonduval07-06-04, 02:05 PM | An excellent effort! The map is both attractive and very functional. Muchas gracias! :D Quite a coup -- WotC should be feel embarrassed, hehe... What software did you use for the cartography, if you don't mind telling? |
| The_Declaration07-06-04, 02:15 PM | I actually think it could/should be hosted on the Wizards website, either as a web enhancement, or as an article. What do you guys think? |
| kildaere00707-06-04, 02:19 PM | The map was done in Adobe Illustrator. And Errata #1 for version 1.3 = Shadow Marshes. I am sure there are a few more...I cranked this thing out fairly quick and while I did proof it...I am sure there are a few more errors. |
| Buffetassassin07-06-04, 02:36 PM | I love that you left it in PDF form so that people with AI can edit it. I'll post any random mispellings or overall errata as I find them. THIS IS EXCELLENT WORK! |
| Jonduval07-06-04, 02:54 PM | Originally posted by kildaere007 The map was done in Adobe Illustrator.Cool. Your map is also getting a lot good attention at the ENWorld.org community site -- there is a Art Gallery, Cartography & Miniatures Painting forum there that hosts map images. Just some suggestions... |

I don't actually have Illustrator right now (but I can get it), so can you pull a .pdf like this into AI and work with it as if it was a native AI file, or do you lose something in the .pdf translation? I assumed that there was some level of native data loss (like layering, etc.), but if not then just ignore my previous request, lol. |
| kildaere00707-06-04, 03:06 PM | I would love to get a nod of approval from WoTC. One of the reasons I redrew it instead of labeling their map was to carefully not step on any of their copyright toes. Nothing would make me happier that to help them with a “living cartography” of Eberron, so to speak. Dennis Kauth and Rob Lazzaretti made some AWESOME maps for the books, unfortunately as beautiful as they are, they are not good for “world spanning” campaign planning. Within 10 minutes with the “world” section of the book I knew the information on the maps were in trouble (stuff was not lining up..etc..). I love Eberron and want nothing more than for it to be D&D’s next big thing. The lack of a Khorvaire map was a huge problem for me (and obviously a lot of others as well). I made the map for my campaign and am happy to provide it other Eberron enthusiasts :). With a buzzing online community…Eberron has the potential to be the best D&D world EVER! I wanted to do my part and am so glad that my hard work is being so well received. (WOW at EnWorld too!) |

| JohnnyONeal07-06-04, 03:41 PM | I'm so thrilled to see how well this turned out. It's top-notch work! With Kildaere's permission, I've given the map a permanent home in the Eberron Journal's rapidly expanding Lore (http://www.coveworld.net/eberron/lore.html) section: http://www.coveworld.net/eberron/lore-map.html The map is also the top news story on the Breland Ledger (http://breland-ledger.blogspot.com/) (which has been having some trouble today, so the link may or may not work). Sorry I didn't post it sooner, but I just got back from a weekend in the remote reaches of northern lower Michigan. This should be a big week for the Eberron Journal, with more new content on the way! |
| Dylan Horrocks07-06-04, 05:49 PM | It's a fantastic map, alright - and many thanks to Kildaere for making it, for emailing it to so many of us, and for being such a good sport about it all! You deserve some kind of special Dragonshard Award for Services to Eberron...! |
| eswat207-06-04, 07:33 PM | this is fantastic! Great job... :) ps. I was actually thinking about doing something very similar, except in Freehand (I'm trying to get some experience with the Studio MX tool set and this seemed like an interesting project). Thanks again for the great map. |
| kildaere00707-06-04, 07:50 PM | Maybe Kildaere d'Sivis will end up in the Zilargo or even Sharn Sourcebook :) as some famous Gnomish Cartographer. |

| scwolf07-06-04, 09:10 PM | This may be a silly question, but where are the national borders? *Grin/Duck/Run* Seriously though, I love it with or without borders. |
| NekoWorldOrder07-06-04, 09:45 PM | Although I'm just repeating what everybody has already said, Kildaere, major props to you. This map is high quality, very detailed and has a professional feel to it as well. I recommend it to anyone planning on running an Eberron campaign. Once again, thanks for the map, it will be a tremendous amount of help! |
| Sebby07-06-04, 11:01 PM | Hi all, When I read about Kildaere's map project (great work !), I was already more than halfway into mine. So I decided to finish it anyway because it was fun to do, except near the end with the machine almost grinding to a stop under the rendering load (Paint Shop Pro is NO Illustrator)! It kind of lacks the flexibility of Kildaere's vector map. I started with the empty map from WotC, added the sites, borders, captions and routes as vector overlays and then rendered it in a single layer bitmap. The style is very close to that of the mini-maps in the book. It prints very well on 8 pages at 150 dpi. I'm not sure about the copyright issue but what the heck, I'm chancing it. If you want it, PM me and I'll send it. I'll see what I can do about hosting. Bye, |
| Doppleganger07-06-04, 11:38 PM | Oooh. That sounds good too. I would love to see that. I sent a PM with my LeapingShark account. |
| Sancus07-07-04, 12:32 AM | It's now hosted at http://sancus.off.net/khorvaire_complete.jpg |

| Sebby07-07-04, 12:42 AM | Ok, I have just setup the free website space that comes with my web account. I have put the map there: http://pages.videotron.com/sebby777/home.html You can also find it on Sancus' site (that was fast, Sancus!). Let me know what you think, or of any errata you might see. Happy exploring, |
| eswat207-07-04, 12:53 AM | Sebby, very nice map!!! Sancus, thanks for hosting it as well. :) |
| Doppleganger07-07-04, 12:57 AM | Wow Sebby. Perfect! This is the kind of map we all expected to see in Dungeon mag. |
| Sancus07-07-04, 08:32 AM | Now I just need to find a print shop that can do it *big* for me and laminate it :P |

| kildaere00707-07-04, 11:23 AM | First off there are a few errors on the map....Version 1.3 should distribute tonight, and will catch most of these. So if you are going to print it big I would hold off a few days so that most of the errors can be caught. As to the Mournland, the lightning rail "used" to go through the mournland. The map in the ECS shows all the tracks as red dashes, for my map (if you see the legend) I indicated where the rail loses service through the Mournland by changing the track to blue dashes. I think one of the adventure hooks for the mournland is a lost coach...now you know where to look..:) (of course the ECS map shows this too, it is just hard to tell which track is disabled.) |
| Sebby07-07-04, 12:28 PM | Ho, not so fast with the laminating and expansive printing! :D I am sure there will be some errata. Also, I must say that I had to make a few interpretations. I may change those after discussing them here. So, you might want to go with a cheaper printing solution for the time being. I printed mine on a color inkjet printer after splitting it in 8 parts (4x2). I folded it in 5 (on the width) then in 3, to avoid having folds on the joins, and it makes a very nifty, portable map. I plan to have it printed on one larger sheet when it is in its final state. About those changes I made (the map you have already includes these changes): Trade road going south of Sylbaran, Eldeen Reaches: The road continuation is not shown on the Breland or the Droaam mini-map. I made it join the existing Ardev-Graywall road at a crossroad in Breland, a more likely commercial partner than Droaam. Trade road going south of Nathyrr, Thrane: Again, the continuation is not shown on the Breland mini. I made it join the existing trade road about 2/3 of the way from Starilaskur to Vathirond. Trade road going east of Lyrenton, Darguun: I made the road join the one going west (around Lake Cyre) from Gatherhold, Talenta Plains. Thronehold: I excluded it from the territories of either Karnnath or Thrane, making it some kind of neutral ground. I figured that since the place is maintained by House Deneith and is shown on the mini-maps of both nations, it ought to have some special status. Town sizes: Some towns are described as having a different size than the one used on their mini-maps. I changed their symbol so they fit their descriptions. These are: New Cyre, Breland (from hamlet to large town) Zalanberg, Zilargo (from large city to small city; also changed it from Zolanberg to Zalanberg, to fit the text) Gatherhold, Talenta Plains (from small city to large town) Town placement: Some sites and towns outside the Mournland, but close to the Mists: On their respective mini-maps they looked fine, but when drawing the Mists from the Mournland mini, they were waaay behind in the Mists. As their descriptions did say they were outside the mists, or the mini-maps indicated they were not ruins (still inhabited), I had 2 choices: move the places, or move the Mists. I chose the former. These places are: Lyrenton, Darguun Gorgonhorn, Darguun Taer Valior, Valenar Stonefeather Spire, Valenar I Added a Fort symbol on the island of Starcrag Rock (Demon Wastes), to mark the place of the lighthouse mentioned in the text. The borders: these were based on the boundaries between the colored and black-and-white zones on the mini-maps, but these did not always match between two adjacent areas. The choices made here were imposed by the necessity to keep some sites inside the nation they belong to, or they were arbitrary where no such constraint existed. The "Mournland Express": As mentioned by Roo, The rail does go through the Mournland. As it does in the mini-map. Kildaere's excellent idea was to use a different line style for that one, indicating an out-of-order rail line. I may change it too. Ain't that crazy? We're becoming experts on the geography of a world that does not even exist... ;) |
| Roo07-07-04, 12:35 PM | Good stuff man. Yeah, if you could change the disabled rails to blue, that would be awesome. (easily brings up conversation - back before the Mournland, we could ride... blah blah blah) Looks great - keep up the good work! |
| iltharanos07-07-04, 01:02 PM | Kudos to Kildaere and Sebby, excellent maps both! |
| kildaere00707-07-04, 01:22 PM | There is no published material on the borders established by The Treaty Of Thronehold....The ECS lists some boundaries...and I tried to follow those. Otherwise it was the colored vs black and white areas on the maps (with attention to keeping features in the correct coutries). But with features dropping between mini maps in the ECS some interpretation be me was made. (if you disagree and want your map to be different, open the map into an illustration program like (Adobe Illustrator) and remove or move the line...print out our own map and tada! :-)....arn't pdf's great! I personally believe that there should be "established" borders from the Treaty. On another thread, someone got from customer support that the "official" word is that the borders are in flux and there is nothing concrete (which seems fishy). Some areas should be contested as the treaty is fairly recent and tensions are bound to spark every now and then. As I said previously...I will try to get up 1.3 tonight. So if You find errors I would appreciate knowing. I have my own list. ie: Shadow Marshes should be Marches. |
| kildaere00707-07-04, 01:26 PM | Good job Sebby! Your map ROCKS! |
| Sebby07-07-04, 01:39 PM | I would not worry too much about what customer service said on the matter. From personal experience and from what I have seen elsewhere on the boards, I find that they are often wrong in their "official words". I once sent them a question about a feat from Complete Divine that was a bit ambiguous. I got their answer, but it was contradicted a few weeks later by a WotC staff person closer to the source. On those border interpretations, we must have nailed those pretty close in both maps. Our borders are much the same except in two or three of spots. |
| Sebby07-07-04, 01:52 PM | Originally posted by kildaere007 Good job Sebby! Your map ROCKS! Thanks. I wish it had the flexibility of yours, though. You must be quite good with AI, because I know how much time it took me to do my map, and I did not have to re-draw the background. It is very, very good work on your part. As it is, both maps fill their niche nicely. A DM can use mine as a detailed overall map, it preserves the style of the book and makes a nice poster in the game room. :) Yours can be infinitely zoomed and customized. If a DM plans to expand on a particular locale, he can zoom on the desired section, capture it, edit it in any paint program and print it, getting just the desired section for his adventure. So, having both a vector map and a pixel map is a great complementary combo. And come to think of it, it is even better than having only the paper poster map we wanted in the first place. |
| Sebby07-07-04, 06:26 PM | Hi, I just finished a map of Aerenal. I used the image from WotC's site, so the background is a little blurry. I turned it so the north is at the top, and I put a scale on it that is consistent with the one from the inside cover map (which is the same as the whole Khorvaire map). The scale on the Aerenal mini-map in the book was wrong, making Aerenal a lot smaller than it is on the inside cover map. Enjoy! http://pages.videotron.com/sebby777/home.html (I'll stop spamming now...) |
| MrFilthyIke07-07-04, 07:27 PM | Not spam, more pictures...need...more...MAPS... :D |

| Grid Iron07-07-04, 08:04 PM | Hey everybody, I'm new to the board and I'm looking forward to seeing the community develop. Looks great so far! I gotta say that both of the maps are awesome. WotC made a smart decision not to include an oversized detailed map because they couldn't have made anything better than what Kildaere and Sebby made. Well done, guys! |
| kildaere00707-07-04, 11:26 PM | I just sent the final version 1.3 map out to people. This will be the Final Map from me (unless I find something I really need to fix). I think most of the spelling errors are fixed and I added and changed the following errata: 1. Shadow Marches (not marshes) 2. Whisper Rock (not whister) 3. Moved Aundair border a bit 4. Fixed assorted mismatched font size issues. 5. Added Zarrthec 6. Extended Torlaac River a bit 7. Turakbar’s Fist (not keep) 8. Added locations for The Gloaming and Twilight Demesne 9. Labled Wynarn River 10. Labled Karrn Bay 11. Added Fort Deepdark 12. Labled Regalport 13. Fixed Lake Cyre Lable 14. Dhavin’s Post (not Dhanin) 15. Added Taarn Draal 16. Dragonroost (not Dragon Roost) 17. Tarandro (not Tarando) 18. Labled Straits of Shargon 19. Zalanberg (not Zolanberg – per ECS text) 20. Fixed City sizes (based on text in ECS) of Gatherhold, Zalanberg, and New Cyre) I will probably update the map in the future, but for now…enjoy! No more e-mails. If the map needs updating I suggest you find it online – http://www.coveworld.net/eberron/lore-map.html http://www.brendenbryan.com/ or many other people that were kind enough to host and distribute the map. Too many to thank and name…but thank you all. |

| Axys07-08-04, 12:30 AM |:devil: thank you both for the wonderful job on the maps.....even tho I had no problems with WotC leaving the maps vague for changing DM erratta, both of them kick some major *****!:devil: thank you both again |
| ENHenry07-08-04, 01:52 PM | Could someone please remind me what is that purple path leading through the Mror holds and down through the blade desert on kildaire's map? Thank you in advance! |

| Sebby07-12-04, 02:28 AM | Hi, A note to let you know that I just posted version 1.1 of my JPEG map of Khorvaire on my map site. What has changed: Color of nat'l borders changed from red to purple (to better distinguish them from LR lines); Credits are smaller; Different color for abandoned lightning rail lines; Different pattern for abandoned trade roads; Added abandoned rail line on broken bridge; Continued trade route from Kennrun; Minor cosmetic changes. You can get it at http://pages.videotron.com/sebby777/home.html. I do not plan to make another version soon, so unless you find a glaring bug in it, consider it stable. Have a nice game, |
| Sancus07-12-04, 10:50 AM | My mirror's updated as well, same URL as before. |
| kildaere00707-12-04, 11:18 AM | Thank You! |
| Sebby07-12-04, 02:02 PM | Hi, Sancus: thanks for the quick update. Kildaere: You're welcome, and thanks for your v.1.3. I borrowed a couple of ideas, I hope you don't mind. :) |
| Damador07-21-04, 07:58 AM | May I ask how you draw eberron vector map ? it is converted from jpg ? or scan ? what tools you use? iam looking for similar map for FR and atm only way is to make it himself :) Txh for reply - btw PM to kildaere007 is not possible ( full mailbox :) ) |
| Gendril08-23-04, 08:17 AM | I would also very much like to know how you made the map! I work in the advertising sector and use illustrator every day, but I still would like to know if you did the whole map by hand or if you know of some helpfull tricks I dont know! Especially I would like to know if you did the border of the forest by using cirkels and made them into one compound shape or you know of a trick! Anyway the reason why I am so interrrested is that I draw maps in my sparretime for fun! You can see an eksample at: www.moocow.dk/mulmastre.pdfwww.moocow.dk/mulmastre.pdf (http://www.moocow.dk/mulmastre.pdf) Hope to hear from you !! And oh by the way your map is incredible!! My work mates here at eyecadcher.dk were very impressed! |
| Trixten_The_Kender10-15-04, 09:25 PM | My turn to rant!! I think it's fantastic that someone took the time to make a detailed map for Eberron and made it available to all. HOWEVER, those of us whose printer took a nose dive and don't have the $$$ to replace it are up the perverbial flowing body of water without a means of motivation. WOTC needs to go back and take a close look at Forgotten Realms CS and pull out the INCLUDED map. I framed mine. I paid the same amount of money for FRCS as I did for ECS and I did not receive a nice map. Dragonlance d20 sucked anyway and I was not that dissapointed, after reading the book with all of it's missing info, I did not expect to find a map in the back. Eberron, however was supposed to be the new CS to celebrate the 30th anniversary of D&D, so why skimp on something as simple as the map? Eberron has a very nice feel to it and could be as big (but not bigger, LOL) than FRCS, they both appear to have the same amount of effort put into the development of both worlds. I beleive that the new direction in which D&D is being pushed deals more with the numbers at the end of the profit line, than the numbers of longlasting fans. (I've played since 1981) Come on WOTC, if you really want to move forward, improve the things that have made D&D great, don't replace tradition with greed. Ok, off my soap box now, I return you to your regularly scheduled message thread. |
| Don E10-22-04, 05:30 PM | Thanks to those who made the maps. I just got the .jpeg version printed in A1 size and it turned out just brilliant. Time to get the poster up on the wall. :D |
| lostone10-23-04, 09:01 AM | My turn to rant!!...WOTC needs to go back and take a close look at Forgotten Realms CS and pull out the INCLUDED map. I completely agree, in fact I hadn't heard there was not going to be a map in the ECS, just assumed there would, and was rather shocked  and disappointed :weep: that there wasn't. And to top it all off the map isn't even decently printed together in the book, each country is seperated so you have to flip back and forth when trying to plot travel routes. It's great that people took the time to make images, and since I use a laptop as a DMing tool I can have it handy, but the screen is only 13". It would be nice to have the huge map that FRCS had for Eberron to spread out on the table so the group doesn't have to crowd around my tiny laptop screen and squint to see things details. I do have a color printer, but the print quality is terrible, and I'd have to butcher the images into 6-8 sections print them all out, tape them together, and it would look like crap, not to mention that it wouldn't fold as nicely or store as easily. Hopefully WotC will correct their oversite and include a map in the next sourcebook. (that is the coolest smiley ever) |
| Blastin10-23-04, 12:16 PM | Well...I took Sebby's wonderful JPEG map on a disk to a local copier place and they printed me a laminated, poster sized copy. It looks beautiful and is up on the wall in the game room for use during play. Only bad thing was it cost me $40, but in the end I think it was worth it. |
| lostone10-23-04, 01:35 PM | Well...sure...you could do that...but I'm poor (also cheap). Maybe if WotC would let me bill them for the map, since it should have been included in the first place. :schemes: |
| Trixten_The_Kender10-24-04, 01:53 AM | Ok, here's the deal. I sent an email to WOTC Customer Service regarding the need for a ECS map. The reply was along the lines of "thanks for the input, but tough luck, no map". I then requested that my email be considered a request and forwarded to the "powers-that-be" and was pretty much told "sure, whatever, thanks". So, it looks like $$$ rears it's ugly head again and a great campaign setting looses it's value over the profit line. Too bad, I used the FRCS map during every session and feel that I got my money's worth, it helped my players get a better feel of distance and need for supplies. So here is what everyone should do. Send an email to the Eberron Customer Service telling them that you want a detailed map like the one that was included with FRCS and be firm, but tactfull, they can't ignore us that long. custserv@wizards.com Ok, 'nuff said. |
| lostone10-24-04, 07:50 AM | So here is what everyone should do. Send an email to the Eberron Customer Service telling them that you want a detailed map like the one that was included with FRCS and be firm, but tactfull, they can't ignore us that long. Good idea, you could also start a new thread (if you haven't yet) called something like Petition WotC for a Map, might get some additional people reading about it that way. |
| lostone10-24-04, 01:29 PM | I sent an e-mail and got a response from "Steve": I will pass this on, I do think that they are planning a full scale map. But I am unsure how they will release it. Thanks! |
