| Tek08-28-05, 06:40 PM | Captain Cheeky (Awakened Monkey / Swashbuckler 12) is a difficult villian and ally to run in campaigns. I've created this thread to help you in placing this unique captain. Alot of people think the monkey should have ties to House Lyrandar. After all, he is an airship captain, isn't he? Wrong. He's got nothing to do with the house, and infact stole one of their newer Airships for himself. One might ask how he could pilot such a vessel. Infact, he employs a Catacylsm Mage (Wizard 6, Cataclysm Mage 10) to pilot the ship. Incorporating him into a campaign is often something Dungeon Masters mess up, because they think he's a supposed to be funny or added for what many call 'comic relief.' Cheeky is a ruthless man... animal... monkey... and he's out for blood and gold. His schemes always involve one of three things. Either to get himself and his crew MORE gold, retrieving something that will help him in the fight against House Lyrandar and the Dragons (see below), or anything that gets him more loyal crew members. Seems easy enough to put him into a plot, one might think, but in truth, it can be more difficult then it seems. I've included some plot hooks where you would likely run into Cap'n Cheeky and his Catacylsm Mage second in command. 1: The PC's are hired to stop a rogue House Lyrandar ship from returning from an outting in Xen'drik. They aren't told anything more, only payed a hefty sum, both in advance and in promise for a mission well done. Infact, House Lyrandar ISN'T looking for a rogue ship, they're looking for Cheeky. When the PC's ambush him, he makes them a better offer - steal a newly found Khyber dragonshard from Lyrandar and give it to him, so he can augment his ship to be even faster. Once they return, House Lyrandar ambushes both the PC's and Cheeky, having set up the ambush with the dragonshard all along. A massive three-airship battle ensues! 2: The Dragons are always hunting Captain Cheeky. In reality, they are hunting his companion, Keelishvarisk, the Cataclysm Mage. Even more so, the actual Keelishvarisk, a Red Dragon, has a personal vendetta against the fake Keelishvarisk, who stole his name when he advanced as a mage. Keelishvarisk constantly tries to destroy Cheeky and his crew, along with the airship, but the witty swashbucklers seem to keep surviving the attacks. Consider this: The PC's eventually might need a fast escape from somewhere. They have an old friend come to the rescue, Captain Cheeky, and he safely begins escorting them to safety. But unfortantly, the real Keelishvarisk attacks the fake Keelishvarisk, and a air battle between Dragon and Airship ensues, with the PC's caught in the middle. Do they save their ride, and risk the Wrath of the Dragons themselves, or do they try and escape. 3. Cheeky's been trying for years to find someone who can awaken him more Monkey companions to serve as his crew. Recently, he's found someone, an old, insane, paranoid druid deep in the Eldeen Reaches. House Lyrandar catches wiff of the scheme and hires Deneith mercenaries to stop the monkey any way possible, even if that is killing him.. or the druid. Meanwhile, The Order of the Emerald Claw also discovers the druid, who actually went crazy while attacking the Blood of Vol. The Blooders managed to cast a spell and opened a gate to Xoriat in his mind where he lost it. The Claw wants to finish him off once and for all. How do the PC's fit into this master scheme? One of their regular patrons becomes sick, filled with some unique diesease. She knows of a druid in the Eldeen Reaches that could heal her, but she can't make the trip herself. She hires the PC's in an attempt to save her life. And so begins to battle Royal, between Cheeky, who wants the druid to create himself some more monkey crew, The Claw, who want to kill the druid once and for all, the Deneith mercenaries, who want Cheeky or the druid dead, and the PC's, who need to bring the druid all the way back to Sharn (or wherever the patron is) alive and well. As you can see, Cheeky makes a good villian and a good ally, depending on the situation. With these tips, you should be able to run him effectively. |
| Radkres08-28-05, 06:53 PM | Yes I can feel your pain. I too have wanted so much make Captain Cheeky a part of my gaming experience. He is much harder to run properly that those How to run the (Enter something here) treads which should be retiled to How I run the (Enter something here) treads. |
| a_psh08-28-05, 07:21 PM | those How to run the (Enter something here) treads which should be retiled to How I run the (Enter something here) treads This is the most enlightened (though also obvious) thing that has been said on any "How to run {blank}" thread so far. Not to say that this thread is like that. The Cap'n Cheeky thread is different, of course. It seems Cap'n Cheeky's stats have yet to be published (an oversight that can easily be corrected in the Player's Guide, hint-hint), so this is exciting new material rather than a regurgitation of the ECS and some Dragonshards with a lot of speculation mixed in. ... Which reminds me of many unanswered questions that still need to be addressed... Question the first: Would you say Cheeky is more of a pirate, or more of a privateer? Question the second: What color is his tail? Question the third, and most important and righteously awesome: If I was to run a campaign set in 33189 KY, based entirely on my three favorite anime series and this made-for-TV movie I saw last week, but still called Eberron because I can't convince anyone to play my homebrew, would you say it would be best to: a.) have Cheeky use life-prolonging magic? b.) have the Cap'n caugh in a time warp and brought into the future? c.) have the lovable pirate actually be *another* monkey, merely using Cheeky's name to inspire fear and respect? d.) make him a robot? e.) all of the above, except with more explosions? |

| thought_riot08-28-05, 07:39 PM | I'm uninformed! Where is this Capn Cheeky? |
| Leagle08-28-05, 07:57 PM | Which reminds me of many unanswered questions that still need to be addressed... This should be put in the AKB thread, because, while he hasn't been published yet we know that Keith will be featuring the captain in his next novel. We need to know how Keith includes Cheeky in his campaign. I hear you may be in luck, Keith just telepafied with me now :eek:and said Cheeky's origins will definately be the subject of his next Dragonshard. So your "Pirate or privateer" question may be answered soon. |
| Tek08-28-05, 07:58 PM | Question the first: Would you say Cheeky is more of a pirate, or more of a privateer? Lets just say that if you were a Ninja, you and Cap'n Cheeky would be destined to meet on the battlefield that is Eberron. Question the second: What color is his tail? His tail and fur are a dark chestnut brown, but the tip has said to be white as a ghost, and radiates light when the monkey is angry. Cheeky is alot like Zorro. By creating fear and power associated with the name, he has became more then a mere monkey. He is a legend, a legend known among every airship captain and king. Some think he is an immortal god by now, but in reality, he is merely being replaced by another Awakened Monkey who is in turn trained by the older Cheeky, and when it is time, the Mask of Ch... err.. the Pirates Hat of the Monkey is donned once again, sending fear down every transport pilots spine. Also, in the year 33189 YK the newest cheeky is actually a biometric robot. What is biometric, you say? You'd have to ask him. I'm uninformed! Where is this Capn Cheeky? He is everywhere and he is no-where. When there is a shipment of gold being taken across Nations, Cheeky will be there. When you see a monkey dressed in captains clothing.. well, that one's obvious. I've attached an artists rendition of Cheeky, so you can watch out for him in your travels. Click Here (http://www.geocities.com/beetlebugcomics/sketchbook/48monkeypirate.gif) |
| The Wilgar08-28-05, 08:08 PM | Lets just say that if you were a Ninja, you and Cap'n Cheeky would be destined to meet on the battlefield that is Eberron. So then, does to good captain ride a burning, flying shark  ? |

| zambuka08-28-05, 09:13 PM | I'm uninformed! Where is this Capn Cheeky? Yes.. where is Mojo Jo... er.. Cap'n Cheeky. It sounds like a fun idea. Where are the details? |

| Manyfist08-28-05, 10:16 PM | Why not have a bunch of Hadozee, from Stormwrack for crew? They have Profession Sailor to every class. :D |

| a_psh08-29-05, 12:21 AM | SHOW ME THE MONKEY! What edition of D&D does Eberron use? 3.5e, of course. Now, numerologically, 137 + 3.5e = 31337.5. This is because "e" is 3, just like the "e" in l33t, of course, as a function of the fact that we are in the Third (or Eth) Millenium. Of course, we are past the year 2000, so we have to introduce a rounding error to account for Y2k. This means the number is actually 31337 (computers and D&D players both always round down). Now, 31337 means "elite". Still with me? Good. Also, page 137 references "the warrior-monks of Orla-Un". Now, warrior-type characters often take the "Monkey Grip" feat to use bigger weapons. And monks are just like monkeys (this is actually where the .5 comes in - they don't match exactly because of that rounding error from before - we have to round off the "ey" to make the monkey more well-rounded, thus allowing us to satisfy 3.5e's criteria for balance). So that's two references to monkeys. We are, however, playing 3.5e. Where's the other monkey, you ask? Well, there are only two in Aundair, so the third one has to be in Stormhome, which is nearby but autonomous. And what's the most elite thing he could do in Stormhome? Why, steal an airship, of course! Now, Aundair is close to the Eldeen Reaches, which is ruled by an awakened tree, so clearly he's been awakened as well. Et voila! Awakened monkey airship captain! Right in the ECS! There's some zodiacal trivialities involved, too, but I eschewed them in favor of a clearer (albeit less technical) argument. |
| Tek08-29-05, 12:27 AM | Exactly. It's not rocket science. |
| Rake08-29-05, 12:32 AM | No seriously, is this just BS? :P |
| a_psh08-29-05, 12:39 AM | No seriously, is this just BS? :P Do you really wish to know the dark, terrible truth? Really, really, really? Like enough to kill a puppy for it? No, no, I meant that metaphorically... put down the puppy! Anyway... a truth too terrible for mortal eyes (but not ears - ask someone else to read it to you) awaits!! I do believe so. The plot hooks are pretty whimsical and awesomely written, though, even if they might not really fit some aspects of your campaign 100%. |
| Tek08-29-05, 01:14 AM | No, he is not real, he was never a real Eberron NPC and I made him up as a spin off to the 'How to run' threads that have been popping up. |
| zambuka08-29-05, 01:35 AM | No, he is not real, he was never a real Eberron NPC and I made him up as a spin off to the 'How to run' threads that have been popping up. Make him then. It's a great idea that fits well with Eberron. I can just see the final confrontation now. Pcs have been tasked with brigning Cap'n Cheeky in alive. The PCs have a nice comfy cage and have defeated Cap'n Cheeky's minions. Cap'n Cheeky, in panic, anger and fear, has reverted to a feral state and is currently flinging poop at the PCs. So don't taunt us and to quote myself SHOW ME THE MONKEY! :P |
| a_psh08-29-05, 01:43 AM | Unfortunately, I've already used Cap'n Cheeky as a Deus Ex Machina so many times since yesterday that the XP he should've earned makes him level 26 (looong story involved a lot of dragons, being slain both in parallel and in series). Can we maybe get a "How to run epic Cap'n Cheeky" thread just for this purpose? |
| Euangelion08-29-05, 01:52 AM | So I have only one question: Is this Capt. Cheeky the one with the Aberrant Dragonmark of Feather Fall that we're all supposed to be buying drinks for in a vain attempt to have him use the mark's power on one of us instead of saving himself if the airship starts hurling, totally out of control, towards the ground at 1-2 miles an hour? |
| MysticTheurge08-29-05, 02:16 AM | When I first glanced at the title I thought the Airship was awakened, which I couldn't figure out at first, but then I remembered Livewood. I wonder if you could make an awakened airship... |

No. By the RAW, monkeys can't have Aberrant Dragonmarks. Though, come to think of it, by the RAW, monkeys aren't donkeys, and we all know that that's patently false (http://www.fungus-amungus.com/images/don2big.jpg). So, in conclusion, the RAW is full of lies. |

Not quite, as Cheeky himself doesn't work for Lyrandar, so he wouldn't be the one that qualifies, as stated in Explorers Handbook. However, he doesn't have much of a attitude to Aberrant marked heirs at all, and employs a few of them. He doesn't emply anyone from Lyrandar, though, as he has the Cataclysm Mage for all the piloting he needs. |
