| Bubba33305-01-05, 03:50 PM | After reading through some of LoM and talking to a friend about it, I started to brainstorm about all the ookie, vile and slime-covered things aberrations do. I won't get into specifics (as I don't wish to offend anyone) but I was curious how nasty and gross some of you get. I'm not talking hentai porn, but overall gross-out factor. |
| Pallis05-01-05, 04:14 PM | I've not read LoM, but I've used The Book of Vile Darkness to better help populate the seedier and downright nastier sides of things in Undersharn and the Cogs. I particularly like (insert gleeful DM chuckling here) the potential for introducing diseases and suchlike to unwitting PCs... :evillaugh |
| RunningWilder05-01-05, 04:50 PM | Breeding Pits, people that have completely lost their minds (very useful if the PC's knew them beforehand) and my personal favorites grafting and flesh shaping. |
| Bubba33305-01-05, 05:27 PM | Just how vile is the Book of Vile Darkness? Also, is it easily meshed with 3.5? |
| RunningWilder05-01-05, 06:23 PM | Just how vile is the Book of Vile Darkness? Also, is it easily meshed with 3.5? The BoVD is 3.0, but isn't too difficult to turn to 3.5. You might want to check this out to update it. Leaflets of Triel (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=190192) The Book of Vile Darkness also has a reputation as being more gross that evil. A quick glance around the mature message boards will give you a fair idea. |

| Salla05-02-05, 12:38 PM | Not particularly ... of course, I own neither Lords of Madness nor the Book of Vile Dorkness. Perhaps I'm old-fashioned (actually, YES, I'm definitely old-fashioned), but I think excessive gore and disgust detracts from the game (any game). I keep my descriptions of combat bloodshed to a minimum as well (no messy decapitations on a kill, no flying organs), because I like my games kept PG-13 ... I would *LIKE* my players to restrict their language, but that's proven unenforceable. Besides, the player's imaginations are more than adequate enough to take over for me. Consider a lot of old-fashioned monster and horror movies; while you'd build up to the monster/psychopath attacking the victim in grueling detail the actual killing would take place off-camera; at worst, you'd see a shadow and hear a disgusting sound effect. The audience's imagination would then provide the worst possible outcome for that attack, based on that audience member's personal fears. All I have to do is drop a few hints, and my players will get all the imagery they'll ever need. |

Given the right setup, the player's mind can create a more gruesome scene than you as DM could. That being said, I do like to test the boundaries a bit, but as the adage states "everything in moderation." If you try to do to much it just won't have any mystique anymore. Maybe it's the CoC in me, but I love toying around with sanity and crazy characters. Throw in some body mod as RunningWilder suggested: with Mordain and the Daelkyrs as the abusers (that sounds like a band name :) ). Test the waters. Know what you and your players are comfortable with and don't cross the line. Simply spicing up your descriptive text to make it a little darker is enough to evoke a reaction from players. |
