| Felonius06-02-04, 02:13 PM | Right now I'm holding a brand new Eberron Campaign Setting sourcebook in my hand! Yes it's at the stores here in Finland. (White Sorcerer: Ainakin Hkin Fantasiapeleissä :) ) Oh boy, oh boy!! I can't wait to start reading it... interior art is 90% great and the content looks good at the first glance. Sorry for jonesing like this, but I have turned into an Ebbie fanboy and I had to share my excitement with people who understand. :D - F |
| DM_Smith06-02-04, 02:30 PM | INFO PLEASE!!! Oh, and P.S., If you're teasing us, we may have to kill you! :mage: |

| Ch@pel06-02-04, 02:43 PM | Lousy Finland and its Eberron-having-when-I-don't-stores. Feleonius, you have seen the promised land. Tell us, is it everything the gods have prophesized? And, yes, if you are teasing then punishment will be distributed accordingly.:smirk: |
| Mad Miso06-02-04, 02:45 PM | You taking questions? Tell us about the races. Whatever stands out. Gnomes especially. |
| DM_Smith06-02-04, 02:47 PM | Oh, just the usual... :) The entire setting verbatim posted to the boards with scans of all the artwork listed sequentially by page number. Is that asking too much? |
| DM_Smith06-02-04, 02:54 PM | Seriously, only one question matters right now. Does it suck? :twitch: And how many feats do the 'forged and the shifters and other new races get? What's the changlings like? How many pages on geography? What are the chapter headings? Does Keith (Hellcow) give an intro? What's the BAB of the Artificer at 11th level? Is it indexed? Can you FedEx me your copy for the weekend? (I promise I won't move ;) ) |
| True Neko-mancer06-02-04, 02:54 PM | Just out of curiosity, I've got this theory that the nation originally led by the true heir of King Jarod was Cyre, any truth to that and if not what nation was led by Jarod's true heir. |

The same talents that make an accomplished bard can produce a skilled spy and gnome society is filled with webs of intrigue and blackmail..." | Ashrem Bayle06-02-04, 03:08 PM | Wow. Thats pretty cool. How about a little info on the gods? How many are there? Would it be too much to ask that you post the table of contents? |
| Alathayn06-02-04, 03:12 PM | Darn, I thought we'd be first :D. Well, well, my provider should send tomorrow. |
| Mad Miso06-02-04, 03:16 PM | Heh. My "evil blackmail-masters" theory of gnomes was correct! Partially anyway. Masters of elemental binding as well........Keith was right. Ebbie Gnomes are cool! All praise the great Akuma Bushi, worker of miracles, doer of the impossible, he who made gnomes cool! |

The racial picture is slightly creepy, but I like it. They are humanoid shapeshifters who can use Disguise Self as a full-round action. | Takasi06-02-04, 04:33 PM | Hoody-hoo! Thanks Felonius! Any word on the stars and planets surrounding Eberron? I remember reading they had some significance. |
| Harmony's Sorrow06-02-04, 04:35 PM | OMG!!!! How could I forget!? ACTION POINTS! Let's have that cinematic adventure! How many do pc's get? What all can they do with them? Any other juicy bits? I have one question, and to me it's the biggest and most important... What are details/stats/relevant info regarding the vehicles of Eberron, airships particularly? (Remember me trying to milk that from you Hellcow? LOL) AND if the zilargo gnomes are the masters of elemental binding I would suspect them to have the largest "air-force" and thus be a huge power to contend with, at least in their own lands! If you answer my first question F I'll live, but others... 1. What about Eberron elves? 2. What dragonmarks do the elves have and what do they do? 3. Any news on the dwarves? 4. What other effects are there for Siberys shards on dragMarks? 5. Any new watercraft? 6. How many monsters? 7. What's the coolest thing you've seen in it so far? 8. What's the story on the monks and their different "sects" (Can't remember the word hellcow used in the dragMag article) |
| Harmony's Sorrow06-02-04, 04:37 PM | PS F: If you answer ALL my questions I'll give you... grr... damn, what do I offer the man when he has the ECSB and I have nothing? |

Crafting requires Bind Elemental and Craft Wondorous Item (as a prerequisite of Bind Elemental) feats as well as the use of planar binding spells together with Khyber dragonshards. Airship has a fly speed of 20 mph, requires a crew of 15 and can carry 30 tons of cargo. Price, 92 000 gp. - F |

Bet they're poor maneuverability if they keep the old methods... do they? I bet it takes a LOT of Khyber shards but... that's it! If I get to play the PC I wanted to he'll ever quest for Khyber shards to build his own airship! 92k-gp? What level on that people? a PC should have that treasure by level 12? Plus I want to read some parts of the book before I fall asleep. :) 1) PCs get 5 action points at 1st level. Each time you gain a level you get (5 + 1/2 x character level) action points. Any action points you didn't spend at your previous level are lost. 2) You can improve the result of: - an attack roll - a skill chek - an ability check - a level check - a saving throw The nuber you get to add varies according to your level and it's random. --> Levels 1st - 7th: 1d6 8th - 14th: 2d6 15th - 20th: 3d6 3) There are three special actions you can use with an action point instead of improving a roll: - Spending 2 APs gives you an additional use of a class feature. - By spending 1 AP an artificier can hasten infusion. - By spending 1 AP you stabilize when dying. - F |

| Plane Sailing06-02-04, 07:06 PM | Keith, Looking at the Organisations chapter, there is some information there that I'd expect a DM to want to keep secret from PC's in order to provide suitable mystery - secret heads of organisations for instance. With that in mind, is the campaign setting aimed primarily at DM's or is it still aimed at Players as well as DMs? Are there any advisories such as "if you are not a DM you might not want to look at this chapter"? Cheers |

With that in mind, is the campaign setting aimed primarily at DM's or is it still aimed at Players as well as DMs? As a campaign setting book, it draws on aspects of all three of the core books. The opening chapters that describe races, classes, feats, spells, and the like are going to be of interest to everyone. Beyond that, you run into organizations, nations, monsters, treasures, and the like. Obviously you can't preserve mysteries if your players read the entire book. Whether that's important is a matter between you and your players. If they'd rather not know what the daelkyr can do, what to expect from dragonshard items, who's really in charge of the Aurum... then you'd want them to stop reading at around page 135. Really, it's your call. If you don't let your players read the DMG, you won't want them reading about new magic items; if you don't let them read the MM, then the monster chapter should be off limits. Again, it's something you'll have to work out on your own. |

| Tainted One06-02-04, 09:16 PM | I don't get it! That's not fair! People in other countries have it but the creator doesn't? What's wrong with the world? Why the hold up in the states? Anyone have a good answer? You think that's bad? Try living Down Under. We are the last to get everything. I have yet to buy a book on its supposed release date or month because it usually takes a month, if not 2 or 3, to arrive here. Not only that, we have very few stores here the sell rpg books. | N'wah06-02-04, 10:08 PM | I've been reading the board frequently, but until now really had nothing of any note to add, so hi. I went to the link the Finlandish gentleman provided above, and aside from the fact that the Email response I go is in Finlandish (I'm sure there's another name for their language, or at least a better way to say it), it also said thaT orders shipped to people in Finland can take up to two weeks, to say nothing of international orders. So quite possibly by the time us impatient Americans get our imported copies, it will probably be out here in the states (unless they offer next-day shipping... hmm). So maybe I could enlist the aid of a Finlandish speaker to decipher this e-mail, and we could get to the bottom of all this... or mayber we should set up some sort of elaborate PayPal system, and have someone ship them? Any ideas, aid, or experience would be much appreciated. :D |

They are humanoid shapeshifters who can use Disguise Self as a full-round action. What about giants? What does the "Bond Armor" feat do? What's one example of the spell-like abilities available though the Lesser Dragonmark feat? Of the Greater Dragonmark? (Just trying to get a general power level here.) Does the CS book mention any particularly cold places in Khorvaire?Don't feel like you have to write tons or copy passages ...I do want to learn some things for the first time when I open the book. But basic info would be great. |

| Hellcow06-03-04, 01:09 PM | Originally posted by JohnnyONeal Do yuan-ti have a defined role? What does the "Bond Armor" feat do? There's a lot in the book, so I'll dart in to help here. Bond Armor does not, in fact, exist. That was an early idea that was discarded during the playtesting process, in favor of the Adamantine/Mithral feats and the fact that a warforged can be enchanted as if it was armor. The yuan-ti do not have a defined role, much as I like yuan-ti. Personally, I'd be inclined to make a yuan-ti culture in Xen'drik, but I could also see them in Khyber, working with one of the Cults of the Dragon Below. Grimlocks are also not dealt with specifically, but certainly have "Khyber" and "The Mournland" written all over them. Gargoyles would have a logical place in Droaam. But, these are just my ideas -- if you want to do something different with 'em, go ahead! |
| Felonius06-03-04, 01:17 PM | what does the Weretouched Master PrC do(I assume its a shifter class)??? "Weretouched Maters are shifters who learn to enhance their shifting ability to accentuate the power of their heritage." And to solve an old debate with someone what is the Changeling's favored class? Rogue racial stat mods on the Changeling. No stat mods. Details on the Dragonmark feats please! There are three "tiers" of Dragonmark Feats: least, lesser, greater You can learn the least on 1st level, the lesser on 6th and the greater on 9th. You also have to be a member of a dragonmarked house and race. what is flametouched iron? A special ore mined in Thrane sacred to the Church of the Silver Flame. It has a speckled red color, but gains a silver sheen when refined. It's inherently good metal. Can you post the table of contents for the monsters chapter? Chapter 11: Monsters The Deathless Type Action Points Damage Reduction Ascendant Councilor Carcass Crab Daelkyr Dinosaur Dolgaunt Dolgrim Hag, Dusk Hounculus Horrid Animal Horse, Valenar Riding Inspired Karrnathi Skeleton Karrnathi Zombie Living Spell Magebred Animal Quori Rakshasa, Zakya Symbiont Undying Councilor Undying Soldier Warforged Titan Iconic Monsters Also can you tell us what the Daelkyr look like and what powers they have? "This humanoid figure bears an angelic countenance, but his unworldly beauty is marred by a hideous suit of armor formed from chitin and pulsing muscle, and he carries a whiplike weapon that seems to move of its own accord. Something about the creature seems fundamentally unnatural." "...The daelkyr are immortal and endlessly patient and their manner of thinking is almost impossible for mortals (or even other outiders) to understand. For the Daelkyr, destroying worlds appears to be a form of art..." a) how do the Warforged aquire other modifications There's a section for new magic items called Warforged Components. b) what are some of the examples in the CSB. Armblade. Replaces an arm with a serrated +1 bastard sword blade, which cannot be disarmed. Changeling gets a simple Change Self? The ability is called Minor Change Shape (Su). They can alter their appearance as though using a disguise self spell, but it is not an illusion and it does not affect equipment. It's an actual physical change and gives +10 to Disguise checks. What does the Child of Winter feat do? "You are trained in the druidic tradition of the Children of Winter, an Eldeen Reaches sect that embraces death and decay." Your animal affecting druidic spells affect vermin as well. There's more as well... ;) What about the Favoured in House feat? You gain a membership and some influence in one dragonmarked house. You get to call in favors to get information, equipment or documents. You have to roll a favor check against a DC set by the DM. Also, what are the new cleric domains? The book contains a full description of these domains: Artifice Charm Commerce Community Deathless Decay Dragon Below Exorcism Feast Life Madness Meditation Necromancer Passion Shadow Weather What's the new type of rakshasa? Zakya. Rakshasa warriors. MM Rakshasas exist in Eberron as well. Is there some a template or some such for members of the Undying Court? Surprisingly, no template. Does the book do anything interesting with gnolls, grimlocks, troglodytes, gargoyles, or other such humanoids and monstrous humanoids? The monster chapter has a section about iconic MM creatures in Eberron. This includes a few paragraphs on goblinoids and orcs. Is the Tarrasque mentioned? No. Are there any new psionic feats? No, but there's XPH compatible info on Kalashtar and Inspired. Or kalashtar or changeling feats? Nothing specific to them like with shifters and warforged. Hellcow mentioned minotaurs in the nation of Droaam; could you elaborate? They are mentioned briefly. They work as mercenaries and bodyguards in cities of Brelish and Zil. What does the book have to say about dragonmark forgery (also mentioned by Keith)? I missed it when glancing through the chpter on dragonmarks, but it mentions that they are more distinctive than tattoos and very intricate (there are example pictures) and they get hot when used. Forgery would be difficult IMHO, but not impossible with a little magical aid. How are the new spells? 9 pages of them. I haven't read them yet. Are there any other Daelkyr-created aberrations made from Eberron's natives, like the dolgaunt and dolgrim? No, but Symbionts are used by them. Can you please post a brief summary/description of each of these prestige classes? Dragonmark Heir - Rare individuals who use dragonmarks in ways beyond the reach of others. Eldeen Ranger - Actually five prestige classes rolled into one. One for each of the five druidic sects of Eleen Reaches: Ashbound, Children of Winter, Gatekeepers, Greensingers, Wardens of the Wood. Exorcist of the Silver Flame - As seen on WotC website. Extreme Explorer - As seen on WotC website. ( I had hoped for another name... ;) ) Heir of Siberys - Gets a rare and powerful version of dragonmarks called Siberys mark. Master Inquisitive - "...elite freelance investigator, or a master detective..." mystery solver Warforged Juggernaut - "... a path that allows warforged to become more and more like true constructs and les like their living creators." Weretouched Master - See the first answer. Action Surge, Heroic Spirit, Pursue, Spontaneous Casting. Action Surge - spend two action points, gain a standard action Heroic Spirit - More action points per level than normally. Pursue - When opponent takes a 5' step, spend 1 action point to follow (to the square he left). Spontaneous Casting - Swap prepared spells on the fly with 2 action points. - F |

| Illuminate06-03-04, 02:32 PM | Now, I'm really really surprised no one has asked the following questions yet... What's the deal with the infamous Lightning-Rail? Is it unique? "... it is theorized that warforged may show signs of physical deterioration after 15o years, but have no further aging effects after that point and no maximum age." What's the deal with the infamous Lightning-Rail? "...When the kingdom of Galifar was at its height, House Orien and House Cannith took on a special commission from the king. [...] House Cannith created the condutor stones - wondorous items that, when arranged along a route in pairs, formed a conduit through which a coach could travel at great speed. For propulsion, it turned to Zilargo for a vehicle with a bound elemental - in this case, an air elemental to propel the coach through the conduit. When the stones mounted on a coach pass over stones arranged on the ground, a sparkling effect is produced, giving the lightning rail its name." "Today conductor-stone paths connect the nations of Aundair, Breland, Thrane and Zilargo in the west, and Karrnath, he Talenta Plains and the Mror Holds in the east." | JohnnyONeal06-03-04, 03:24 PM | I may be able to field these: Can you tell us anything about The Shadow Marches? The Shadow Marches, located in western Khorvaire, are a natural area composed of swamps (and forests and badlands, I believe). They are home to a number of humanoids, including a large number of orcs. Human and half-orc communities exist in the Shadow Marches, so it's "civilized" in some areas, but it's generally a forboding place where danger is never too far away. One of the previews (the art one, IIRC) mentioned something called Hermetech. Any hints on what it is or what it does? Examples? (My guess is that the Lightning Rail is one of these)That's not an official term used in the campaign setting book. It was just the artist's term for magic items that resemble technology. In other words, it's another way of saying "magitech." While I think the line is a bit fuzzy, the warforged, other construct creatures, airships, and the Lightning Rail would probably all qualify as magitech or "hermetechnology." However, they're 100% magical, not a blend of magic and post-medieval technology. (Maybe that's why the artist used "hermetechnology" instead of magitech, since people tend to think steampunk or Final Fantasy when they read "magitech.") |
| Illuminate06-03-04, 03:26 PM | Thanks, Felonius! So the Lightning Rail IS unique and those little Zilargo gnomes have also their toes in it... I'm wondering if they have to fuse the Rail with dragonshards... Salut, Illuminate |
| Felonius06-03-04, 03:27 PM | Originally posted by N'wah I do have a question of my own though- which kind (or kinds) of dinosaurs do the Talenta ride? Do they reference that at all? | N'wah06-03-04, 03:45 PM | Originally posted by Felonius Clawfoot as a war mount Fastieth for normal riding. Bred for speed and too small for humans. Glidewing as flying mounts. Dinosaurs do not have paleontological names in Eberron. Are these in the Eberron book at all? Are they in the MM? Maybe I missed them, I didn't think the MM had any Medium dinosaurs. Thank you, by the way, really. I can't say that I'd be able to tear myself away from it long enough to eat, much less answer other poeple's questions. |
| Illuminate06-03-04, 03:49 PM | Another little question, dear Felonius: I've read about the library Korranberg. Is it similiar to Candlekeep in the Realms (it has the biggest collection of books in the world)? Do I smell something gnomish around here...? Kudos, Illuminate |
| Harmony's Sorrow06-03-04, 03:56 PM | Gotta know... I'm not sure what these are all called in the MM, but... Can you tell us the Eberron names for: Tyrannosaurus Rex Velociraptor Triceratops Brontosaurus ???? Thanks!:D |

The collections of The Twelve and the Arcane Council rival it, but Korranberg holds the largest collection of knowledge in Khorvaire. Many of the Library's collections are actually housed in a pocket dimension. Visitors to the Library pass into a limited nook within that extradimensional space, where they are surrounded with shelves of books on only the topics they've requested. |

| Ch@pel06-03-04, 04:08 PM | So am I alone here, or should Felonius be the first person officially promoted to demi-deity status in Eberron or what? Truly he is the Messiah and valiant bringer of "The Word of Hellcow", piercing through the darkness of our ignorance with his brilliant generousity! So now to reap the rewards of that (well deserved) ego massaging... :D F, what can you tell me about the artificer??? I've been scouring the WoTC site and the coveworld site, but I can't figure what the deal with the artificer is. If you look close enough at this picture one might think that there is a swimming pool at the rooftop of the left scyscraping tower... kinda strange...I do think it was a pool of some sort: a mini-reservoir, a bathing area or decorative reflecting pool for a very wealthy citizen, or some sort of ceremonial pool for a temple. It's kind of a moot point, though, given that it doesn't appear in the final version of the image. That's definitely Sharn. I'm less sure about the top images. |

Hellcow said at one point it might be possible to harvest dragonshards from the Siberys; any mention of what's on the moons and/or why they're tied to the dragonmarks??? Well, since Felonius went to bed, I can just as well work the night shift for him, having bought the book earlier today. Or yesterday, technically. The first entry of the timeline is the Age of Dragons, immeasurably long ago. The second entry is -10,000,000, to give you an idea of how immeasurably long that is. It basically goes over the creation myth, with the three progenitor wyrms Eberron, Siberys and Khyber creating the Prophecy, and how the ensuing battle shattered the world in three parts and scattered the Prophecy around the multiverse. Siberys became the ring of magic around the world, Eberron became the world itself, and Khyber was bound inside its depths. This entry refers to Eberron, Siberys and Khyber as the most powerful of the progenitor wyrms, meaning there probably were/are more. There doesn't seem to be any in-depth knowledge about the moons, beyond mention that they're there. |

The kalashtar have their entry in the Races chapter, and the Dreaming Dark theirs (about a page in length) in the Organizations chapter. The relationship of psionics and Eberron seems to be an optional, yet strongly supported one. There are frequent references to things from the Expanded Psionics Handbook, denoted as such by a little P. There's also a new psionic feat, Strong Mind. The Inspired, one of the major power groups of the setting, are also psionic. There's very little in the book about options to replace the psionic stuff, except for detailing of the kalashtar's mindlink power and a suggestion to not use psionics if you don't have the book. |

The floating city in the second image is Argonth, a mobile military fortress made by Cannith makers in Sharn. The chap who looks like he's praying is a monk dedicated to the Mockery. The towers bit is indeed from Sharn, the Morgrave University. The emaciated face in the left upper corner is (I think) an undying councilor, a deathless member of the Undying Court. Can't find the other illustrations in the book, nor can I find a reason for that dinosaurus to be sprouting tentacles from its face. |

I'm not very good at ending a post, so... No. It is mentioned in passing that Eberron created all living races, except the fiends which were spat out by Khyber and the dragons themselves, who just were. Siberys created their new generation. Not as such, no, though it is mentioned that "by the Five Nations" is a common epithet. Each nation's entry in the Life in the World chapter details its major industries. Also, each of the dragonmarked houses controls a certain industry, like the House Orien with the Mark of Passage, who are the FedEx/travel agency. The vegetation of the lands is not under close scrutiny, though there are a few plant-derived substances among the special materials. Much the same with fauna, though it is statted as needed, with the three new dinosaurs, the horrid and magebred animal templates, and the Valenar riding horse in the Monsters chapter. Can't find anything on unusual weather, unless you count the Weather domain and the Mark of Storm as such. Hey, now you can at least make your own. Each nation's entry in the Life in the World chapter may mention the climate and weather patterns, or it might not. |
| Dave206-03-04, 09:18 PM | Couple of Real general questions. Does the book give population numbers for each empire. Also does it give the size of the military of each empire? Are number of members in houses given as well as the number of peple in a given organization? As far as the US release date I have heard the 11th multiple times from customer service at Wizards who indicated they got the information from the Eberron point person? Called this week and got the 11th. Would make sence if Europe has it already. Dave |
| Tainted One06-03-04, 09:27 PM | Finally came up with a question that hasn't been asked yet :) Q: Do any of the of the pc races have an alternate favoured class? Take elves as an example. Do Valenar elves have a different favoured class (fighter or ranger) since they are more militaristic than Aerenal elves (they would keep wizard since they have necromacy/deathless)? |
| Hellcow06-03-04, 11:35 PM | Originally posted by Tainted One Q: Do any of the of the pc races have an alternate favoured class? I'm still around, so I'll answer this one: No. It is an intriguing idea, specifically for the Valenar but at the moment all of the racial characteristics of the PHB races are as they are in the PHB. If you wanted to house-rule it, I could certainly see the Valenar having ranger as a favored class -- but that would be up to the individual DM. With that said, wizard certainly makes sense for the Aereni, and I can see an argument for leaving it with the Valenar; magic is still part of their heritage, and it would mean that their martial tradition is likely to include fighter-mages. As for the other races, most are still reasonably solid. Bard is ideal for the culture of Zilargo. While they may be merchant princes, the Mror dwarves do have a strong martial tradition. Halflings... I could almost see ranger there, too, but the same argument can hold here as for the Valenar: the Talenta halflings value stealth, speed, and cunning tactics, and where a valenar ranger might have a spell up his sleeve a Talenta ranger would temper his skills with rogue levels. |
| Mad Miso06-04-04, 12:20 AM | Thats not a bad way of looking at it. It's easy to forget that, mechanically, Favored class represents what class a race is best at multi-classing with. It really should be renamed favored-multiclass or something. It would clear up a lot of confusion. There is a great deal of difference, for example, in assuming that most Half-Orcs are illiterate brutes, and assuming that many Half-Orcs have a natural bloodlust or 'Wild-side'. |

Here's the bad news, I haven't seen the cover. for the rest of your question. The pages have faded, blue/gray, patterns/swirls in the background. I can't tell if they are meant to represent symbols of some type, or if they are completely abstract. At least some of the Chapters start out with "Full Page, Color, Dramatic Illustrations" (like a comic book page). I would guess that over half the pages have some type of full color artwork on it. Someone else commented that the Dragonmarks are beautifully rendered. I can tell you that the religious symbols are inspiring, and the Dragonmark House Crests are impressive. If that was not enough, there are approprate scenic images as well. Art-wise, it is a bit better than the 3.0 players handbook, and Much better than the 3.0 DMG. |

Not specified, there being no illustrations of couatls in the book... I've always thought of couatl as having a feathered snake head, which nicely covers both bases. |
| Rulandor06-04-04, 08:48 AM | The postman (or, in our case, the postwoman) brought my ECS today, and I can't stop browsing and reading it. First impression: not only the most beautiful roleplaying book ever, but also a setting with over the top sense of wonder. I really think that I'm going to play in Eberron.:) |
| Alathayn06-04-04, 08:53 AM | Lucky you, my copy didn't come today. The post here in Mönchengladbach is really slow :(. (Wait, you claim to be from Bielefeld? Conspiracy, conspiracy!!!!!!!!!!!) |

| Shadowwalker06-04-04, 10:50 AM | Hi everyone, I see that the book is out yet sadly not available in my country so I have some questions that I'd like to have an answer to. About the Dark Six, are they evil in alignment and do they have a gender or can they asume wathever gender they want? Does the Shadow domain use new spells that appeared in the Eberron book or do they use PHB spells? I have it from good authority that drow won't be a major race but do they appear at all in the campaign setting and if they do are they as evil and twisted as in Greyhawk or Forgotten Realms? Thanks for any answers. |
| JohnnyONeal06-04-04, 11:27 AM | Here's a quick, but very specific, question: Does Breland have any sort of national symbol? If so, what is it? |

I have it from good authority that drow won't be a major race but do they appear at all in the campaign setting and if they do are they as evil and twisted as in Greyhawk or Forgotten Realms? Thanks for any answers. The Dark Six are indeed evil. Some are girl or boy, but The Shadow and The Traveler are referred to es "it". The Shadow Domain uses spells from the Player's Handbook. Drow are, as other racial varieties, not explicitly mentioned - as far as I have read and as far as the index goes. But the Khyber, Eberrons Underdark, is certainly an appropriate "land" for them. No race is as fixed in alignment as traditionally known in other settings. In a world where you meet good orcs or vampires, a drow could certainley be as good. |
| Rulandor06-04-04, 11:44 AM | Originally posted by JohnnyONeal Here's a quick, but very specific, question: Does Breland have any sort of national symbol? If so, what is it? No country is given a national symbol in the book. On the other hand, the Dragonmarked Houses have very beautiful coats of arms. |
| Felonius06-04-04, 11:45 AM | Can you list the Dragonmarked Houses, and their Dragonmarks and the races and a brief character description? This is from a table on page 63: Mark - House - Race Detection - Medani - Half-elf Finding - Tharashk - Half-orc, Human Handling - Vadalis - Human Healing - Jorasco - Halfling Hospitality - Ghallanda - Halfling Making - Cannith - Human Passage - Orien - Human Scribing - Sivis - Gnome Sentinel - Deneith - Human Shadow - Phiarlan - Elf Shadow - Thuranni - Elf (not a mistake :) ) Storm - Lyrandar - Half-elf Warding - Kundarak - Dwarf Can you say anymore without ruining the surprises, about monastic traditions of monks? The Dhakaani clans of Darguun have a martial tradition of monk/rogues and certain monastic order followers of the Silver Flame are monk/paladins. Okay, I think Siberys was the dragonmark shards, and Khyber the binding. What were the last shards? There are three different kinds of dragonshards: Siberys, Khyber and Eberron -shards. They look different as well. And can you give a couple of things listed for what you can do with these from magic items? AND... IF there's more than one artifact in the book, will you tell us one flavor rich artifact and a little about it? "Ghaal'duur, the Mighty Dirge: In the first days of the empire, Jhazaal Dhakaan created the great horn Ghaal'duur to ring out on the field of battle, signalling the downfall of the enemy. This horn is one of the greatest relics of the empire..." "Ghaal'duur is carved from the tip of the horn of a red dragon." There were mentions of "Aberrant Marks" and other such things... what's the scoop there? Any other "marks" in the CSB? There's a feat called Aberrant Dragonmark, which allows you to manifest a dragonmark even if you do not belong to one of the dragonmarked houses. How is the final cover of the book ? Cover art is exellent and by Wayne Reynolds. You also get the whole two page picture inside, and I almost peed my pants the first time I saw it. :D I'm a big fan of mr. Reynolds, so my opinion is entirely subjective, of course. How the book is illustrated, i mean, in FR setting the pages look old, how they look in this book? How are the interior illustrations? I believe this was already answered, but I must say that even the pictures that I do not like are very well done. Top notch work, IMHO. wonder if the moons could also be progenitor dragons. Your earlier answer did hint that the three we know about might not be the only ones. Not the moons, but the constellations. Their names are: Aasterinian Astilabor Bahamut Chronepsis Falazure Garyx Hlal Io Lendys Tamara Tiamat About the Dark Six, are they evil in alignment and do they have a gender or can they asume wathever gender they want? Five of them are evil and one is neutral. They have a gender. Does the Shadow domain use new spells that appeared in the Eberron book or do they use PHB spells? PHB spells. I have it from good authority that drow won't be a major race but do they appear at all in the campaign setting and if they do are they as evil and twisted as in Greyhawk or Forgotten Realms? They are mentioned in pasing here and there. Foe example, they are not recommended as a PC race and The Fury sometimes appears in a drow form. Does Breland have any sort of national symbol? If so, what is it? There is no symbol in Breland's chapter, but they seem to have eight-sided coins. :) - F |
| Takasi06-04-04, 12:02 PM | Not the moons, but the constellations. Their names are: Cool! Any more details about them? So the constellations are the progenitor dragons? Does that mean they are star clusters? Does the book show the patterns for these? Do they have any significance in magic, worship, daily rituals, seafaring, etc? And are the moons named at all? Any mention of the sun? |

There are pictures of Bahamut (?) and Tiamat constellations on page 94 & 95. The book says that they are named after the dragon lords of legends, so they are not necessarily progenitor dragons. Yes, the constellations have draconic associations. For example Io is associated with magic and knowledge. The 12 moons are named and each is tied to a specific dragonmark as well. I didn't find a name for the sun. - F |

He is a NG god of crafts, industry and fire. The patron of all who make things. - F |

Any more detail though on what they really are, my theorys obviously flawed as it leaves one unaccounted for! Perhaps Eberron is IN #12??? Odd that there are 13 planes (if you include Xoriat, which I guess you don't have to), 13 houses (though 2 use the same mark), 13 dragonmarks (if you include Death, otherwise it's 12), 12 moons (could the Ring be 13?) and 11 constellations (12 if you count Eberron)...just coincidence? Would it be too much to ask the names of the moons and their respective dragonmarks? And there are NO details on the size of the moons in the night sky? Do they look like stars? Are there any pictures of the sky, showing the Ring and the 12 moons? |
| ozmar06-04-04, 01:01 PM | Do the moons link to the planes in any way? i.e., Same names? When the moons are full, the planes are fully connected to Eberron? etc... Just idle speculation until we get our copies... Ozmar the Patient Fan |

And there are NO details on the size of the moons in the night sky? Do they look like stars? Are there any pictures of the sky, showing the Ring and the 12 moons? Sadly there's no good picture of the night sky in the book. There is one that shows two moons, one of which is bigger and brighter than ours. The other one is slightly smaller. The names of the moons correspond the month names. They are: Month - Season - Dragonmark Zarantyr - mid-winter - Storm Olarune - late winter - Sentinel Therendor - early spring - Healing Eyre - mid-spring - Making Dravago - late spring - Handling Nymm - early summer - Hospitality Lharvion - mid-summer - Detection Barrakas - late summer - Finding Rhaan - early autumn - Scribing Sypheros - mid-autumn - Shadow Aryth - late autumn - Pasage Vult - early winter - Warding - F |

| Harmony's Sorrow06-04-04, 01:23 PM | Wow... with all these moons and constellations and the siberys ring etc... This could make for some AWESOME adventuring, spelljamming'esque and weird gates and other cool things sending characters to alien places. I know this isn't a focus of the setting but it's still SOOO awesome! I don't know how I'll get through another 2 weeks obsessed with the setting but not having it! :invasion: And a bit of late night reading, how many of you will be using the Couatl serving "Rainbow Servant" from complete divine in your Eberron campaigns? |

Maybe something from the Prestige Class or any feats that are for them. There's a prestige class Called Eldeen Ranger, whose abilities change depending on the druidic sect they belong to. I listed the sects earlier in this thread. There are also some feats that suit rangers, but are not exclusive or specifically tailored to them. The Traveller? Got any info you would care to share with us? "The most mysterious of the Dark Six, the Traveler [...] seems to have no connection to the other deities of the pantheon..." The bards can modify their music with new feats like: Haunting Melody Music of Making Song of the Heart This is not a complete list... Any other intirguing tidbits on the bard class would be greatly appreciated. "Bards have a unique way of tapping into the magic that pervades Eberron: through music. Some bards claim that the Dragon Above sang the world into being at the dawn of time, and that their music is an echo of that powerful tune of creation." are there pictures presented for each prestige class if yes, pls describe exorcist of the silver flame. i will be not able to sleep this night pls describe................. This is from a1books.com I'm assuming it's business days, so this would coincide with another post that stated Wizard gave a release date of the 11th. With tax, shipping, all that, the total came to $26.77. Not too bad, they did have a disclaimer that they have limited quantities though. So I'm hoping to recieve mine around the 18th. | Hellcow06-04-04, 09:12 PM | A few quick side notes (I don't have the book with me, so I couldn't post specifics even if I wanted to): To those who have the book, I have a feeling that the best descriptions of the smaller druid sects (specifically the Children of Winter) is included in the Eldeen Ranger PrC. To answer the question on the role of rangers, the "druidic sects" include rangers as well as druids, but rangers also play a role in the military culture of many nations, especially the Valenar and the Talenta halflings. (Now, as noted before, PC classes are less common in the world than in some settings, but the Valenar soldiers are exceptionally skill, and this is reflected by the presence of rangers as opposed to warriors). Also, while the Dark Six are generally evil, bear the grayness of alignment in mind here. To a large degree, "dark" does mean mysterious and dangerous; they do have followers of all alignments, who revere the mysteries they represent. (And for those wondering, the Traveler is the definite neutral of the bunch). |
| neoshade06-04-04, 10:29 PM | Yeah, I noticed that a1books.com aren't the fastest online retailer(right now they are the cheapest), but according to the email I got from them, I should receive ECS on or before June 23. That's at least 5 days before amazon.com, which gives a ship date of on or before June 28th, even with 1-day shipping. I suppose, haha, either way, I'd be getting it sometime in June. I'll just keep reading these threads till then! :whatsthis |

The Ashbound sect believes arcane and divine magic to be unnatural, and strike at farms that seek to cultivate or confine nature. They avoid killing, however, since they seek to to encourage their targets to abandon their unnatural ways and embrace the harmony of nature. The Gatekeepers protect nature from aberrations, fiends, undead, and other unnatural evils. It was they who cast the spell that moved Xoriat out of alignment seven millennia ago. The Greensingers are close to the fey, and embrace their chaotic ways and views on life. They do a lot of singing, dancing, and revels. Wardens of the Wood are the largest of the druidic sects. They are most closely connected to the Great Druid Oalian, an immensely old awakened greatpine. They are protectors of nature, and seek to maintain a balance between nature and civilization. |

| NiTessine06-05-04, 11:38 AM | Originally posted by Kobold Avenger Are these druid sects sort of tied to the five alignments that druids can be? Not specifically tied, though there are restrictions. | NiTessine06-05-04, 12:11 PM | Originally posted by shemov NiTessine, maybe you would be so kind and answer my last questions? Hmm. I'll try. You first question is easy to answer, really... The text gives no details about heraldry or color schemes of any organizations, leaving it to the art to sort such things out. So, probably. The second is a tad bit tougher. The Knights of Thrane are only given a short entry under power groups of Thrane... They're a knighthood who answer nominally to the crown and actually to the Council of Cardinals, the leaders of the church of the Silver Flame. Since nothing is said about their social class, I'd guess they consist of noblemen outside the direct line of inheritance in their families. As for the third... I haven't read the entire Life in the World chapter yet, but most nations seem to have a feudal system, or something very close to it. The actual governing systems of the nations differ, with Aundair a traditional feudal monarchy, Thrane a theocracy, and Karrnath a military dictatorship. |
| neoshade06-05-04, 03:42 PM | From Talahar Do you guys really have these problems of getting the books close to US-release date in general? It appears to me that the US has it's set release dates, but then it's up to the individual stores when they are going to receive their orders and display them to the public. It's generally close to the release date, but can be a week or two later, depending on various circumstances(like receiving ECS books late, for example). Most of the time though, I personally, like to buy my books online. It's just cheaper that way; why pay $39.95($42.55 after tax for Minnesota), when I can pay $26.77(total) for the same book. I'll get it sooner going to the game store but I'll save $15.78. That's not a bad deal with someone on a tight budget. |

I WANT MY COPY!!!!!!!!!!! Well, theoretically any magic item can be made into a warforged component. The most common ones, the ones statted out in the book, however, are... Attached components: Armblade Armbow Battlefist Embedded components: Disk of Energy Resistance Essence of the Scout (also improved and greater versions) Final Messenger Wand Sheath Artifact components: Circlet of Preservation Tauric Belt In addition, there is the docent, basically an intelligent metal sphere. |

"Not much, Professor Orboid. Just pondering what hands are like." "Careful now, Mr. Sphere, that's crazy talk. The Creator made us as intelligent balls of metal for a reason." "Yeah, I suppose so." By the by, what do they do? I'm sure it's cooler than floating around trying to figure out why they're smart metal balls, but you never know. |

Can you mention some more stuff you can do with Eberron Shards? No, docents are not artifacts... Eberron shards... Lessee... Aureon's spellshard, which holds the equivalent of 500 pages of spells. Eternal wand, which has no charges, but allows you to cast a low-level spell twice per day. Everbright lantern. Scrying shards. Also, Eberron dragonshards are used to create a number of magic items from the DMG, and psionic power stones. Eberron shards can also be attuned to specific spells, enhancing their effects when they're cast upon the shard. They can also be used to encode spells rather than writing them in a spellbook. |
| N'wah06-05-04, 08:27 PM | Ok, docents are cool. I love smarmy hunks of metal. Quick question- do the races all have names for their languages? Do the various human nations have their own dialects? Or is "common" the only human tongue. |

In addition to Common and the normal demihuman languages and planar tongues, there's Argon, spoken in Argonnessen and Seren, Riedran, spoken by the lower classes of Sarlona, and Quori, spoken by the quori, the Inspired, and the kalashtar. |

What are some of the Artificers augmentations like? I know there's the general repair/inflict damage spells, weapon/armour/other enhancements. Anything else that stands out? Are there any feats for the Artificer? What do they do? Are Aasimars or Tieflings (and/or other planetouched races) mentioned? I imaging due to the nature of the planes and their inhabitants, they would be extremely rare. Artificers also get some offensive infusions, like heat metal and rusting grasp, and the ability bonus spells like bull's strength. Artificers also indeed have specialised feats. They're called the Item Creation feats. I can find no mention of the planetouched races in the book. Dolurrh has, among other things, nalfeshnees, lemures and maruts. |

However, the infusions are just like spells, so their duration is limited. Interestingly, you can augment a construct, and thus cast an infusion directly at a warforged and not, say, his toe ring. Handy thing. |

| Knight Otu06-06-04, 08:14 AM | The driders, maybe they are creations of the Daelkyr in the same vein as the Dolgaunts and Dolgrims? |
| Alathayn06-06-04, 08:21 AM | Maybe, but Dolgrim and Dolgaunt where created from goblinoids that where dominant on Khorvaire when the Daelkyr invaded, while I can't imagine how they got their hands on drow. |
| Knight Otu06-06-04, 08:34 AM | According to Keith, there are six Daelkyr sealed away in Khyber. These could be the creators of the driders. Of course, that's just a theory. Maybe Khyber itself has something to do with it. |

| mlshuford06-06-04, 12:30 PM | Does it say in the book how the flavor of the Artificer's magic should work? | NiTessine06-06-04, 01:17 PM | Originally posted by Kesh But, I'd really love details on the Shifters and the PrC made for them! Shifters get +2 Dex, -2 Int, -2 Cha. When a shifter is created, one trait is chosen from the list in the book that states what bonuses the shifter gets while shifting. These are Beasthide, Longtooth, Cliffwalk, Razorclaw, Longstride and Wildhunt. Each trait gives +2 to a single physical ability score. There's also 11 Shifter feats in the book, most of which improve upon the shifter traits. The shifter PrC, the Weretouched Master, brings the shifter closer to a lycanthrope, a true werecreature. They choose an animal from the list (no dinosaurs, sorry) at 1st level, and then gain different abilities associated with the animal as he progresses through the class. At 5th and final level, he gets the ability to assume the animal and hybrid forms of his chosen animal. |

Driders are not mentioned. |

In 986YK, a coven of hags, the Daughters of Sora Kell marched into the region with an army of gnolls, ogres, and trolls. They established power over the scattered humanoid tribes. Because that would majorly SUCK! I'm getting the books usually close to USA-release date even though i'm in germany... and then there are those 2 or 3 books a year who get released in europe before the US-releasedate, but thats about it... and dont get me started on dungeon and dragon magazines....never got one on us-release date AFAIK... but what do i know ;) soooo.... is it really that bad? anyways - i expect my book on monday, and i'd like to answer some questions, too, so felonius wont have to do all the work (and TWS too) It appears to happen fairly frequently. I believe the problem is a matter of the efforts put into trying to get simultaneous releases around the globe. They have to ship the books out well in advance to make sure that Europe, Australia etc. all get copies, because it takes longer to get them there. And I bet that while they're still getting the books into some warehouses, others, who have received them (ie. Europe) don't bother paying attention to the posted release dates, and just put them out for sale. I'm pretty sure it's illegal, but likely it's not very easy to enforce U.S. laws in another country. Of course, WotC could just punish those suppliers/vendors by withholding shipments to them on the next product, until everyone else has already received it and started selling it. I think one of my local stores got dinged that way. It used to be that they got books in advance, and even sold a few before published release dates.....but now all of a sudden, they're getting the books 1-2 weeks after the other stores get them, so I now buy from the other stores. Banshee The changeling's shapechanging is exactly like disguise self, except that it is not an illusory effect, but a true physical change, and it does not affect your equipment. For reference, here is the text of the spell: Disguise Self Illusion (Glamer) Level: Brd 1, Sor/Wiz 1, Trickery 1 Components: V, S Casting Time: 1 standard action Range: Personal Target: You Duration: 10 min./level (D) You make yourself—including clothing, armor, weapons, and equipment—look different. You can seem 1 foot shorter or taller, thin, fat, or in between. You cannot change your body type. Otherwise, the extent of the apparent change is up to you. You could add or obscure a minor feature or look like an entirely different person. The spell does not provide the abilities or mannerisms of the chosen form, nor does it alter the perceived tactile (touch) or audible (sound) properties of you or your equipment. If you use this spell to create a disguise, you get a +10 bonus on the Disguise check. A creature that interacts with the glamer gets a Will save to recognize it as an illusion. Changelings also get some skill bonuses, and Speak Language is always a class skill for them. |

Yeah, well, it was conquered some twenty years ago, so the battles involved would be part of the Last War. The border between Droaam and Breland is still a rather volatile region, and the concept of the war being over hasn't yet really set in. Darguun is another realm of evil humanoids who probably would have used ogres in their military. |

Some laws, unless they go through Interpol (like games and systems do) don't even apply internationally, though Wizards could still pull their product from a persistent early-stocker. |

That's what I expected. Laws are notoriously hard to enforce across borders. I had a contract with a client in another country who reneged on payment, and in the end, it was too expensive to go to court to force the client to pay, plus the laws differed, and we ended up loosing a fairly sizable chunk of change. As a result, we're now a bit more reticent to deal with clients in that country. And that's even though we have trade arrangements with that country. This is probably why my local store that *was* selling some books before release date now seems to get everything a week or two late. WotC can more easily police things by punishing vendors by withholding shipments. Banshee |

| jedi818706-06-04, 04:41 PM | Originally posted by NiTessine Yeah, well, it was conquered some twenty years ago, so the battles involved would be part of the Last War. The border between Droaam and Breland is still a rather volatile region, and the concept of the war being over hasn't yet really set in. Darguun is another realm of evil humanoids who probably would have used ogres in their military. Hmm, interesting. Draguun, however, I don't think would use ogres, its mostly goblins and hobgoblins from what I know, but could be. I'll invoke the name of hellcow elsewhere for an actual answer. | Banshee06-06-04, 04:42 PM | Originally posted by Joni-san Thanks :D Yeah I've also noticed that most intelligent items end up played as smart-alecks. I wonder why? I think it's easier. That's probably why it happens. I've only run one intelligent weapon lately, and it was evil, and the PCs weren't, and it became really obnoxious until they eventually stuffed it into a bag of holding and left it. These items are smart though....they should probably have their own agendas. Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn was one series of books that depicted intelligent weapons really well. They were alien, with their own goals, and very frightening to the characters. One thing I've found difficult is the Egos. I mean, according to the DMGs, most items, unless supremely powerful, won't have a high Ego score, and as a result, many characters will be able to easily outpower them. This kind of defeats the purpose of having a character's intelligent sword fall out of his hand when he does something it doesn't like, etc. Banshee |

Accually "Monsterous" humaniods were more likely work for House Tharashk (Half-Orcs) |
| NiTessine06-06-04, 06:27 PM | Hmm. It looks like House Deneith has the monopoly in Darguun, and gets goblinoid mercenaries from there, while House Tharashk is welcomed in Droaam, which exports troll, ogre and gnoll mercenaries, mainly. |
| jedi818706-06-04, 07:13 PM | Ok, House Tharashk is my best bet. Ok new charecter idea coming up, well a couple of ideas. Fare all thee helpful people well, and may fortune smile upon you. |
| jedi818706-06-04, 07:27 PM | I was reading another thread and House Tharashk has bounty hunters, not mercenaries. Now this could be similar, but its not quite the same. But this could work for a different idea. |
| NiTessine06-06-04, 07:33 PM | Yeah, normally House Tharashk focuses on that, but since House Deneith, being humans, aren't too welcome in Droaam, Tharashk occupies Deneith's usual niche there. |
| Hellcow06-06-04, 09:41 PM | On Droaam: Yes, this is where you get the bulk of your ogres and trolls, along with most of the few true giants on Khorvaire. Droaam did not actively participate in the Last War; it took advantage of the fall of Galifar to establish its borders, and it sold mercenary services through House Tharashk. Of course, while the Daughters of Sora Kell have declared the sovereignity of Droaam, the nation is not recognized by the Treaty of Thronehold. As has been noted elsewhere, Deneith largely holds the corner on mercenary services across Khorvaire, but Tharashk has a special in with Droaam because of its orcish members -- something that Deneith is interested in changing. |

| NiTessine06-07-04, 08:02 AM | Originally posted by Dimuscul What about equipment? new weapons and armor? maybe old ones with new ilustrations? Does the book have drawings of clothes and houses of the diferent cultures? For new weapons, we get the Talenta tangat, boomerang and sharrash, the Valenar double scimitar, and the Xen'drik boomerang. The new armours are the leafweave, and darkleaf breastplate and banded mail. Then we get some alchemical thingies, like acidic fire, alchemist's frost, alchemist's spark and noxious smokestick. In the area of new special materials, there's bronzewood, byeshk, densewood, dragonshards, flametouched iron, livewood, Riedran crysteel, soarwood, and targath. The art depicts the folk of Eberron from most walks of life, but there's no special attention given to showing people of different dragonmarked houses, churches, or nations. |
| Dimuscul06-07-04, 09:30 AM | What about dragons? Apart from the progenitors ... do they take an active role into the politics & affairs of the humanoids? What is his place in Eberron? they live in caves sleeping over tons of gold? |

| Josh Wilhoyte06-07-04, 02:26 PM | Fluff: What is "the Prophecy" ??? Crunch: Someone already told us what Flametouched Iron was (weapons made of it count as good). I presume that means for the purposes of Damage Reduction. Can an Evil creature wield a Flametouched Iron weapon without penalty? What do the materials of bronzewood, byeshk, densewood, livewood, Riedran crysteel, soarwood, and targath do? Thanks. |
| ieattrollsforbreakfast06-07-04, 03:09 PM | I'd like to know what the Prophecy is too. Although I can tell you Byeshk metal mined in the Greywall Mountains bordering Droaam. Its a purple, dense, heavy metal that can bypass the DR of some Xoriat aberrations. |
| FenixZero06-07-04, 03:12 PM | If you have the Arms and Equipment Guide, Bronzewood is in there. IIRC it is like Darkwood. Unless of course they changed it for the setting. Earlier in the thread, someone mentioned the various shifter traits that are described in the book. What do each of these traits do? Are they limited use special abilities or permanent racial bonuses? Some examples would be greatly appreciated as well. This was in a Dragon Magazine preview. It is like Barbarian rage (but your not exhauted (sp?) afterwards) in the sense the that do it of a number of rounds equal to 3 + your con modifier. Each of the traits do something different, one gives you +2 nat armor, one gives you climb speed of 20ft., one gives you claws, one gives you +10 base land speed, and so on. You can also get +2 to either str, dex, or con. Lastly by taking shifter feats you shifting gets better and you can do it more times per day. For each feat it lasts one round longer and for every two you can do it one more time per day. Hope this helps. FenixZero |
| Taigis06-07-04, 04:18 PM | Originally posted by N'wah I've worked in both bookstores and video game stores, so this I know about. When companies break street date (the date items get to go out on the sales floor) there's usually a fine and it can hreaten that store's ability to get more books/games/whatever. Hoever, it's hard to prove in the States as it is (someone has to get ahold of a reciept with the date of the sale, and most customers won't complain if their local store X is selling the books early- it's mostly big chains who watch each other like hawks), much less internationally. Some laws, unless they go through Interpol (like games and systems do) don't even apply internationally, though Wizards could still pull their product from a persistent early-stocker. There is a significant difference between a release date and a strict on sale date. I've worked at a bookstore for nearly six years and have never seen D&D roleplaying material arrive with a strict on sale date. If neither the publisher nor the company inform the stores of a strict on sale date, it goes on sale immediately. On the other hand, I've seen RA Salvatore novels arrive with strict on sale dates. This indicates that the role playing items do not have strict on sale dates and are therefore able to be sold as soon as they arrive. Most books don't have strict on sale dates. If a book has a strict on sale date, then violating it certainly can have repercussions, such as fines and delaying the shipment of future product to the violator. Sure, you can sneak and sell Harry Potter V early and try to beat the competition, however you might get Harry Potter VI 2 weeks late for violating the date. To sum up, once again, Ive never seen D&D roleplaying material arrive with any strict on sale information from either the publisher or my home office, therefore it can be sold as soon as it arrives. Taigis |
| N'wah06-07-04, 04:27 PM | In my tenure at a bookstore, I never saw a role-playing book arrive on time, ever. We were the undisputed kings of "June means July", no matter what I tried. The only time I got something early was when the store manager went to one of their annual seminars and he brought back an early release of the MM 2. But it's true, as it stands I don't think role-playing books have street dates. Boon for us, though, eh? |
| Alathayn06-07-04, 04:58 PM | Finally got my book...Should've been here on friday... They just skip streets if they want and that's what seems to have happened to me today (been the whole morning at home, with my eyes on the street, but guess what, no post car)[/rant] However, shifting sounds really cool :D Could you shortly summon up what individual shifter feats do? |

There's probably an old 1st edition loyalist, running Keep on the Borderlands for the 6,297th time (yes, he counted) who came into the local game store for a dice refill, overheard some excited youths just starting the hobby talking about the "cool art" in the book, berated them about "tainting" his hobby, then went home and died. I hope. I'm feeling morbid today. Ok, real quick- Dolurrh, the plane of the dead. Who all ends up there? Every mortal soul not contained in Eberron after death? The unbelievers? | Bocklin06-08-04, 09:17 AM | Originally posted by Josh Wilhoyte So, the afterlife just pretty much sucks then? No wonder the elves are going to such extremes to avoid it. Well actually (this is one of the parts I could read), it seems to me that the elves do not look down on death, but rather consider that they should try to prolong their existence to better contribute to the general good. There is even a sentence in the Aerenal part where it gives the impression that the after-existence (existence = life, first; then deathlessness) is considered highly. I do not have the book here though... This is of course for the "sane" elves. There are also some of them who, perverted by their lust for power and impatience, look at undeath as a way to attain the power that the Undyings have. These are ready to go for second-choice undeath (e.g. vampirism or lichdom) in order to attain more power and a better status. This has of course nothing to do with the Elven philosophy and positive Deathlessness but is a mimickery, a perversion that should be combatted. ;) Bocklin |

Off the top of my head: Dedicated Wright: some kind of tiny-dwarven-musculuous-white creature using your item creation Feats for you so that you do not actually have to spend the time in a forge/labor to create items (you are still paying the costs in XP and gold though; as you still have to meet the prerequisites) Expeditious Messenger: a kind of diminutive flying lemur/gremlin carrying messages for you (up to 1 mile away) Furtive Filcher: a thin smoke/lava creature made for discretion, some kind of a thief/pickpocket working for you Iron Defender: a dog-shaped metal construct intended to guard your stuff (and your person) Bocklin |

Better make them look like real Men!" But obviously, when the Warforged started developping free will and a personnality some character traits that we link more to feminity started to appear in some of them, while some others started to display some other traits that we associate with masculinity. They remain genderless beings, per se. I think that to consider one given Warforged masculine or feminine says more about how the observer thinks of genders (i.e. what he thinks "being a woman" or "being a man" is) than about a real gender division among these creatures. :) Bocklin |

| JohnnyONeal06-09-04, 10:28 AM | One thing we haven't heard much about is the monastic traditions in Eberron. I've heard this much: * Monks who follow the Mockery seem to favor the kama and focus on causing their enemies pain * Many monks have a scholarly background and can use the Monastic Training feat to multiclass out of, then back into the monk class * There's no specific Asian-inspired culture in Eberron, so it doesn't seem likely that monks all come from one place So where do monks come from? Do different sects exist? Do they use different weapons or fighting styles? Are any on these monastic orders linked to a political leader, or are is each sect connected to a specific religion? |

Let's see what i can find: "Monks in Eberron are an unusual mixture of contemplative scholars and martial artists. They are called to a life of community apart from the world in which they copy books, preserve the annals of history, and practice the skills they need to defend their faith and fight for the cause of their church." "Monks and Churches Most Monks in Khorvaire follow the religion pf the Souvereign Host. Good and neutral monks worship Dol Dorn, the Lord of Strength at Arms. Evil monks are devoted to the Mockery" Different Fighting Styles: Double Steel Strike: treat two-bladed swords as special monk weapons, alowing you to perform a flurry of blows Serpent Strike: same with long spears Whirling Steel Strike: same with longswords good and neutral monks devoted to Dol Dorn may choose the whirling steel feat as bonus feat in 2nd or 6th level, evil monks devoted to the mockery may choose flensing strike... ----- there may be more, if so i haven't found it yet... |

Monk w/ Double Steel Strike + Fist of Zuoken = :b:  How do you get a fighting style? Is it a feat? |
| Mad Miso06-09-04, 12:28 PM | If the new fighting "styles" are based on the older ones(found in Dragon and Unearthed Arcana) then choosing a style gives you a different set of bonus feats at levels 1, 2, and 6. I have to say though, that I really, really, Really like the sword styles being made availible. It allows monks to be played as agile swordsmasters, which is a great for a huge number of concepts, from Eastern Zen swordsmen, to whirling dervishes, and even ninja(Who wants to bet those gobbo's can flurry knives?) Really nice touch. |
| Ashrem Bayle06-09-04, 12:30 PM | The only problem I've ever had with monks and weapons is that, in the end, their unnarmed attacks will be more powerful. |
| N'wah06-09-04, 12:36 PM | Man, the goblins are all about flails. And the spiked chain. Though I wonder about knives- maybe as a ranged attack option? |
| Mad Miso06-09-04, 12:52 PM | Actually, I was referring to a specific order of ninja-esque Goblin Monk/Rogues who's signature weapon is a long knife. I believe they are only mentioned in passing in the CSB though. Ashrem, sometimes, yes, but the situation can vary. Weapons actually offer many advantages to a monk. While unarmed strikes evantually offer a higher base damage die and free DR penetration, weapons have every other advantage. 1. Weapons are much, much cheaper to enhance. So much so that investing in something like the amulet of mighty blows is usually a bad idea. Spells like GMF and GMW work very well for monks, but still offer only simple bonuses to attack and damage. 2. Weapons have a huge-list of availible enhancements to choose from. Monks unarmed strike, however, does not. 3. Weapons can be made of silver or cold iron. Always a useful backup for monks, who rarely do much damage per hit. 4. Specific weapons contain a variety of advantages. Ranged weapons, obviously, can be used at a distance. Weapons like the longsword have a better crit range. Larger weapons are superior when attempting special manuevers like disarm. Others offer special bonuses to certain techniques. Longswords and staffs can be used two-handed for extra strength/Power attack damage. Reach is never a bad thing to have. Overall, I find that Monks that focus too heavily on hitting everything with their fists suffer in the long run. There's nothing wrong with keeping your powerful unarmed strikes in reserve as a potent back-up weapon. Also, don't forget that monks with double-steel strike can choose to combine flurry and two-weapon fighting for maximum blender action. :smirk: |
| Talahar06-09-04, 12:53 PM | Originally posted by Ashrem Bayle :OMG! Monk w/ Double Steel Strike + Fist of Zuoken = :b:  How do you get a fighting style? Is it a feat? Yup, it's a feat. For Example: Double Steel Strike [general] Prereqs: Exotic weapons Proficiency(two-bladed sword), weapon focus(two-bladed sword), flurry of blows class feature |
| Mad Miso06-09-04, 01:02 PM | Hmmm....so a pure monk would probably have to about 6th level to take the feat, although a fighter/Monk could take it at 2nd. interesting. |
| Talahar06-09-04, 01:07 PM | A human monk could take it as his 3rd-level-feat... |
| N'wah06-09-04, 01:14 PM | I didn't know the Dargunni goblin "ninjas" (henceforth to be referred to as gobjas) used knives. I like that. I suppose the monk members would be big Mockery fans ("I flense you, longlegs!"). |
| Mad Miso06-09-04, 01:17 PM | Actually, he can't. Weapon focus and exotic weapon both require a +1 BaB. I tend to ignore that paticular requirement(along with weapon finesse) but it is part of the rules as written. A Human monk could pick it up at 3rd with a level of Ranger or Paladin though. Of course, then you might end up needing the Monastic Training feat, due to the multi-class restrictions, which is another rule I threw out. So in my campaign, you could get it at third, yes.;) |
| Mad Miso06-09-04, 01:31 PM | But getting back on topic, can you tell us anything about Dol Dorn and the mockery? Are the style-feats more prevelant in certain regions? And how on earth did I gloss over the Longspear flurry feat? |
| Mr. VanderMeer06-09-04, 03:23 PM | Dol Dorn and the Mockery are brothers. Both are warriors, but the Mockery favors treachery over honor and has betrayed his brother (and his sister Dol Arrah). |
| Mad Miso06-09-04, 03:30 PM | Ah, thanks. Thats a pretty good backstory actually. Great setup for a climatic duel between a follower of Dol Dorn and and a disciple of the Mockery. |
| Mr. VanderMeer06-09-04, 03:43 PM | There isn't much info about religion in the book. But there are a few of these backstories that are quite nice. Like the twin brothers Kol Korran and the Keeper. Whereas Kol Korran is the god of commerce and represent the acquisition of wealth, the Keeper (lord of death and decay) embodies greed. The ideas are good, but short and with little detail. Being a fan of fantasy religion, this is one of the points in the book that I would have liked see expanded a little. But I suspect there will be a sourcebook on Eberron religion in the future. |
| jedi818706-09-04, 04:24 PM | What are the types of Monastic Trainign feats(i.e. what choices do you have, or is it just one feat and you can choose)? Also do monks get it for free at first levle, or must they use their 1stlvl feat? |

Can you give a few examples of other uses for Eberron Shards? 2. Does the CSB add anything to the possible uses of elemental binding for earth/"enhanced" water ships? PS You all see the new WotC catalog? MMIII with over 90% new monsters, each entry begins at the top of it's own page, and there are a bunch of new Eberron monsters in it? And we knew Giant's Of Legend had a couple Eberron fig's, but the new D&D Mini's: Aberrations will also have more Eberron figs! Some I'm pretty sure it said are of monsters from the Eberron: Shadows of the Last War , and Whisper Of The Vampire's Blade adventures! Awesome, can't wait to see some of those beasties of xoriat in 3-d on my gaming table! |

Not quite what it says; it actually says that most monsters will have information on how to use it in Eberron (and the Forgotten Realms). Otherwise it is a setting-neutral supplement. Sort of like the Monsters of Faerûn book was mostly setting-neutral with paragraphs on using the monsters in the Forgotten Realms, only more radical. ;);) |

On a similar topic, are there any constructs suitable for use as mounts (perferably for medium-sized characters) I don't have the book, nor am I positive about this, but I would assume yes. They do depend on items, as their augmentations are ment to effect their weapons, armor, or constructs. But I think they will more than able to make decent combatants if the focus that way. 1. Is there any difference between the core races in the players handbook and the core races in Eberron, ie.. Elves having different weapon proficiencies or any difference at all? No there isn't. Keith has stated that in a couple of places on these boards. |
| MoeJoe06-09-04, 07:17 PM | The artificer sounds great but is probubly more of a group buffer then a core class one of the pcs in my group is making one it sounds like a fun class. |
| NiTessine06-09-04, 07:22 PM | Well, artificers have a rogue's BAB progression, so they're not completely helpless in combat. No construct mounts in the ECS, only dinosaurs and magebred & Valenar horses. There aren't really martial arts styles per se. Just a bunch of feats that allow monks to treat certain weapons as monk weapons, Monastic Training, and my personal favourite, Flensing Strike. Wait until you get the book, and you'll see what I mean. |
| jedi818706-09-04, 07:43 PM | Speaking of Valanear war mounts, whats so special about them? |
| Mad Miso06-09-04, 07:44 PM | Ah yes, those jolly Mockery fanboys and their silly kamas. Their signature move is the Flensing Strike IIRC. I seem to recall it doing Con damage or grossing people out or making them beg for merciful quick death or something, I forget what exactly. |
| JohnnyONeal06-09-04, 09:04 PM | The artificer sounds great but is probubly more of a group buffer then a core class one of the pcs in my group is making one it sounds like a fun class. An artificer will never be the best fighter in the game, but they're a very versatile class. They have a decent medium BAB and their ability to scribe scrolls gives them a good spellcasting potential... what they lack in per day casting they make up for with the fact that they can cast both arcane and divine spells with their scrolls and wands. They can wear armor while doing all this, and they can use their augmentations to cast "bull's strength" and such on themselves. The possibilities are endless, and you don't have to focus on just one path. So yeah... artificers can take care of themselves. |
| NiTessine06-09-04, 10:17 PM | Originally posted by jedi8187 Speaking of Valanear war mounts, whats so special about them? Speed 80 ft., that's what. They're elven horses, whose ancestors can be traced back to Xen'drik by the books kept by their breeders. House Vadalis was banned from operating in Valenar after they tried to steal some. |
| Hellcow06-09-04, 10:38 PM | Originally posted by JohnnyONeal An artificer will never be the best fighter in the game, but they're a very versatile class. Agreed. At low levels, they are good missile support; they can wear decent armor, have a moderate BAB, and can use personal weapon augmentation to add, say, bane to a crossbow. Once you reach the mid levels, spell storing item is an EXTREMELY versatile ability, effectively letting you manufacture a short-term, 1-shot wand of whatever on the spot. |
| Hellcow06-09-04, 10:49 PM | Originally posted by Jason_Sunday 1. Is there any difference between the core races in the players handbook and the core races in Eberron, ie.. Actually, it's a very minor point, but Talenta halflings treat the tangat, sharash, and Talenta boomerang as martial weapons, while the Valenar elves treat the double scimitar as a martial weapon. And for what it's worth, the tangat is supposed to be a hafted weapon; the pictures on page 17 and 204 show halflings with tangats. |
| Mad Miso06-10-04, 12:15 AM | Anyone want to describe briefly what a Tangat and Sharash are exactly? And since you're talking about the Artificer anyway and I never saw the preview......whats the main limiting factor on his power? Can he only throw around a limited number of infusions per day, or is another factor? Time? Money? Toffee's? Inquiring fans want to know. |
| N'wah06-10-04, 01:11 AM | The artificer has a limited number of augmentations per day (they work like spells, but have a casyting time of 1 minute- Intelligence is the main stat). But, if you'd like, sure- make them addicted to imported toffee candy. |
| Myriddian06-10-04, 02:35 AM | Could someone post info on the "double scimitar " please? |

I agree for Eberron's setting but sometimes it's fun to have the Gods battle each other and shake up the pantheon. |
| Hellcow06-10-04, 03:16 PM | I would be surprised in you ever see stats for the gods. The Silver Flame and the Path of Light are not anthropomorphic to begin with, and people just don't interact with the gods on that level (and if the gods themselves interact with each other in this manner, it is a mystery to mortals). However, some of the other elements -- prayers, temples, holy symbols, and such -- are obviously useful. I don't know that you'd see a whole book on it, but I could see a web article focusing on a single religion ("Everything you ever wanted to know about the Sovereign Host") or it being added into a book on the Five Nations (Thrane could certainly use detailed info on the Silver Flame). |

THey have better things to do, and better ways to do them. Unless you're into greek deities and such... I digress, let them bestow feats or spells heretofore unseen to their better clerics. Holy wars amongst the followers that are mortal, so it matters. There are a million ways to go on this, but I feel their stats being made will detract from so much else. |

| Ashrem Bayle06-10-04, 03:30 PM | Oh no no no. You guys misunderstood. I have absolutely zero use for the stats of the gods. Like Keith said, the gods aren't like humans, and in fact, that's one of the things I like most about the setting. What I wanted was the info about the church, clergy, prayers etc. The expanded format would have been VERY useful. But combat stats for gods? I never saw a need for them. One of the best things about Eberron is the de-humanization of the gods. |

| Harmony's Sorrow06-10-04, 04:30 PM | Between cost and shipping it appears wal-mart.com will have your copy of Eberron to you on Monday, with their fastest shipping. |
| Takasi06-10-04, 04:36 PM | Then storytell it for the sake of your world. That's all that's necessary. Definately don't want to threadjack, so I won't post about this again on these forums. I already said I agree it wouldn't work for Eberron. I would leave it at that, but... IMO you CAN have a lot of fun in a campaign where immortals battle each other for control of domains and influence. You can always have the DM do all of this, but it can also be fun to roll play it out. It definately belongs in a different genre though, be it planar, Greco-Roman or Nordic. It just doesn't seem to fit in with Eberron. (Hey, I didn't spend $30 on Deities and Demigods for nothing! ;) ) |

| Hellcow06-10-04, 04:56 PM | Originally posted by Mad Miso Hmmm....so is there anything else written about the Knights of Thrane? Are they "Knights" in the classical cavalry sense, or are they something else entirely? They are exceptional warriors, both on foot and cavalry. Shemov's write-up would certainly serve for a basic Thrane cavalry soldier (and Thrane does certainly field heavy cavalry). The honest-to-goodness Knights of Thrane are the elite warriors of the land, and would be more like Ari 2/Ftr 2, give or take a few levels; the more devout knights could replace either side with a few levels of paladin, although only exceptional individuals would advance beyond 2-3 levels; the captain of the order is an 8th level paladin. I would expect to see more about the Knights of Thrane in the future, in one form or another. The issue with the Knights of Thrane is that they walk the line between church and crown; historically, their first loyalty is to the throne of Thrane, but most of the current knights have more respect for the spiritual authority of the Flame than the temporal authority of the crown. So far, the balance has held, but the tensions are their (so if you want a Three Musketeers-style campaign, you could certainly do it in Thrane!) |
| Harmony's Sorrow06-10-04, 05:02 PM | CooL! So the Elite folk are CR 3 and the Officers CR 8. Can we get any more info on CR/Levels regarding others in the setting? So when that Barbarian 5 starts a bar brawl a PC better do something cause the local militia isn't going to stand a chance! |
| Hellcow06-10-04, 05:07 PM | Originally posted by shemov Is there a symbol of silver flame? The standard symbol of the flame is a single silver flame with two smaller flames rising up to either side, and a smalled crescent-like flame on the bottom; for those who have it, you can see it on page 68 and 77 of the CSB. It is often displayed on an arrowhead, and a worshipper may wear an arrowhead as a necklace or (in a martial context) carry a quiver of arrows bearing the flame. Different orders would use variations of this symbol, so you might have an order with a couatl wrapped around the flame or a phoenix rising out of it. Will my ancient predictions come true? (Hey, I was sorta right about goblinoids, in a twisted sort of way) Are kobolds souless marketers of cutesy kobold merchandise? Are Gnolls locked in an eternal war with the reclusive Catgirls? Will the madness ever end? Most gnolls on Khorvaire live in Droaam, doing gnollish things... beating each other up, beating other people up, and being very subservient to the Daughters of Sora Kell and everybody who could beat them up. I recall only one instance of kobolds in the book, and that was a tribe that raids the settlements of Hope and New Galifar in Q'barra. The kobolds are based in the Endworld Mountains. |
| Takasi06-10-04, 07:22 PM | Makes perfect sense. Droaam is the land of monstrous humanoids and Q'barra the land of lizardfolk. |
| Hellcow06-10-04, 07:50 PM | Originally posted by Mad Miso Thanks Keith. Say....I just realized that we never found out whats been done with kobolds and gnolls. Any mention? Droaam is the gnoll homeland, as mentioned above. While they aren't the brightest bulbs in the box, gnolls are extremely pragmatic. They have established themselves as a neutral mercenary force in Droaam, preserving their culture by serving all sides (with the caveat that they will not fight other gnolls except in the pursuit of preexisting feuds among the gnolls). With the rise of the Daughters of Sora Kell, the hags are the primary employers of the gnoll brotherhood, but gnoll mercenaries can also be found in the service of both Deneith and Tharashk. |
| Mad Miso06-10-04, 08:00 PM | Ah, sugoi. Pragmatic mercenaries who won't fight each other. I like that. Fits with their canine nature, and is a very nice story hook. If Gnolls show up, you just know somebody is up to something.:) |

Warforged juggernauts have turned their back on other living creatures and so have a hard time associating with them. The LoBster's stats have it listed on page 70 of Dungeon issue 111. |

I did only get it today, but so far I'm really disappointed to see that psionics was preached about as possibly being a big or small thing and as far I can tell it's barely even mentioned. Just like in FR it's alluded to well, existing. Yeah, I know Sarlona is the psi. continent, but that too only gets a brief mention along with Adar the place I wanted to start up my campaign. But there's so much info about the other areas and Adar is suppose to be so 'mysterious' I dont want to start there since I have so little in comparrison. There are allusions too to products that will come out later, but I'm not willing to wait for next year to do that. So, I guess I'll suck it up, take my psi PC's tell them not to talk about Sarlona too much to other people and move on to Khorrive. I'm not really that upset, it's a fantastic book with a great vision. Though I'm a large Psionics fan and I feel a little cheated due to the "off to dim to bright" thing. |
| Timespike06-11-04, 02:19 AM | I just got the book myself, and what a glorious wonder it is! I'm anxious for more about Aerindal and the undying court in particular; this is really interesting stuff and I'd like to know more. Unfortunately, it also seems to be isolated, so the idea of an undying PC seems right out. The extra types of exotic wood are cool, though; it'll be nice to have druids outfitted with fullplate and such. The four new races are.... :OMG! I really want to try playing them all; particularly the warforged and changelings. In fact, the party's worth of characters I'd like to try is as follows (in no particular order): Warforged Fighter/Wizard (spellsword, most likely) Changeling Ranger/Rogue/Extreme Explorer/Master Inquisitive Human Paladin/Cleric/Exorcist of the Silver Flame Kalashtar Ranger/Psion/Illithid Slayer Shifter Ranger/Barbarian/Weretouched Master Halfling Barbarian/Rogue (dinosaur rider) Orc Druid (Gatekeeper) Elf Necromancer/Ranger/Arcane Archer Human Paladin/Monk (use that new Whirling Steel Strike feat) Changeling Rogue/Wizard/Arcane Trickster Kalashtar Psychic Warrior And I'm thinking of MORE as I type. This is one of the coolest, most genuinely exotic settings I've ever seen. I want to explore and participate in its every facet. Oh, and as a side note; the Mockery is one of the coolest evil divine forces I've seen. Ever. Just... creepy. |

I too am a huge psionics fan, but am not disapointed by what you mention. I figured that was how it was going to be as psionics(unfortunately) is not core, and appeals to a smaller market. They wanted to make the book as core and as simple as possible, and that meant leaving out alot of psionic stuff. But hopefully Keith, or someone else, will give a psionics inhancement over the web. |
| Mula06-11-04, 08:40 AM | And I thought the book had more psionics content than I expected. There are new psionic items (Eberron and Khyber shard related), new psionic races and monsters (well, only one "core" race, the Kalashtar), an example of a psionic adventurer, information on how the Dreaming Dark affects Khorvaire, etc. etc. |

We get the Kalashtar and the Inspired, what other psionic races are there, and what monsters, none of the monsters I've seen listed seem particularly psionic, but I may be wrong. |
| Mad Miso06-11-04, 10:49 AM | I wasn't expecting the CSB to be psionics heavy. The thing that makes Eberron stand out against other settings psionic-wise, isn't that it's all over the place, but simply that it's part of the setting and actually makes sense. FR pretty much says "Uh, yeah, you can have psionics, so.........just don't talk about it or expect any supporting material whatsoever" Eberron explains the difference between psionics and magic in the campaign setting, and provides a home culture and story hooks for psionic characters. That's already more than just about any setting offers, psionic-wise. |

| Hellcow06-11-04, 12:02 PM | Originally posted by ChronosCrow Though I'm a large Psionics fan and I feel a little cheated due to the "off to dim to bright" thing. Sorry to hear it, CC. As Mad Miso said, the goal was to give psionics a sensible place in the world without making them so central that people would have to make major changes if they did not possess the XPH. The point was not to allow you to run a game in Adar right off the bat, but for you to be able to say "My soulknife trained in Adar" or "My psychic warrior studied with a kalashtar elder in a secret monstary in Sharn." And, of course, the kalashtar and Inspired are psionic creatures with an important role in the world; the Dreaming Dark is one of my favorite things about the setting. Psionics even have a tie to the planes; creatures of dream and madness are typically psionic in nature as opposed to magical. But obviously, you are correct. There's not a vast amount of psionic material in the CSB; we had a limited amount of space to work with and we needed to make sure that the book would be as useful as possible to as many people as possible. However, when the kalashtar, Inspired, or Sarlona are developed in more detail (whether online or in print), you should get more psionic material to play with. |
| Harmony's Sorrow06-11-04, 12:15 PM | This should probably be stated in the magic forum, but... based on what's been said/written I've gathered this about the Energies of Eberron: Divine = Belief, faith, deities, nature Arcane = Life, planes Psionic = Mind, Dreams, Madness So the trinity of existance, Body, Mind, and Soul is represented through Eberrons energies. And if power of the Body = Arcane, Mind = Psionic, Divine = soul... That gives a lot to work with just stemming from the powers that be in the world. Can any of you book owners find anything more about this? (I know that this is per se obvious, but it would almost appear that Eberron is embracing and establishing things on this to a new depth) |
| ChronosCrow06-11-04, 12:55 PM | MM-yeah i figured it was all stuff that would be in making. It's not like I wanted a bunch of psionics information and rules to add to XPH (that was a lot already), just enough information to run a game starting in Adar, but like you say I suppose only so much can be done. One thing that will be a little complicated when you have a "soulnife from Adar," is that person's history in relation to the area he grew up in. Where you grow up has a large impact on a young adult/adult. Homesick peopel often compare things to what they know, good ol'home. But with so little information on Sarlona it's kind of hard to say things. Though I think some things are possible to be made up and gotten away with just fine. I guess I just doubt a few of my players are that creative enough yet to come up with such sayings and experiences for a fictional character. Meh, I'll be looking forward to the Sarlona stuff though it all looks extremly interesting to me. |
| Hellcow06-11-04, 01:20 PM | Originally posted by ChronosCrow One thing that will be a little complicated when you have a "soulnife from Adar," is that person's history in relation to the area he grew up in. Where you grow up has a large impact on a young adult/adult. There are kalashtar communities in most of the large cities of Khorvaire, so the simpler answer would be to be a soulknife raised among the kalashtar of Sharn. The critical elements of life in Adar are that it's a nation under siege, where you live under constant threat of Inspired attack. Life is ascetic and driven by tradition -- it has to be, both to deal with the war footing and the limited resources of the mountain realm. The kalashtar of Khoravire are somewhat more innovative and less traditional than their Adaran counterparts, because they can be; they still have to worry about Dreaming Dark assassins, but they are not fighting off the forces of Sarlona on a daily basis. Another thing I'll mention is that within kalashtar communities, the strongest bond between kalashtar is between those who share a bond to the same spirit; even if such a kalashtar is actually your 63rd cousin, the two of you would consider each other to be brothers, and would have a strong understanding of one another's motives and feelings. The spirit bond is inherited from the parent whose gender matches your own. Anyhow, I am sure that the kalashtar will be studied in more detail in the future. |

The highest level good guy is an awakened pine tree called The Great Druid Oalian (Druid 20). I'm not sure about epic level bad guys, but there are definately big threats, such as the Daelkyr and the Lords of Dust. |

That essence of Adar you put was nice, I'll use that when telling PC's how to describe it to other people in game. Yes, much kalashtar exploring would be really nice. ^_^ |

The thing to remember about Jaela and Oalian is that while they are very high-level good guys, they are pretty much confined to their respective locations (Jaela can leave the Flame but becomes a 3rd-level cleric while doing so, while Oalina is... well, a tree). |

| Michael Tree06-11-04, 10:26 PM | In the bonus feat list of the artificer in Dragon, there was a feat called "Reduce Spell Failure", or something like that. Is it still in the ECS, and if so what does it do? |
| Amarin06-11-04, 11:40 PM | Just got my copy late last night. It shouldn't be long before the rest of the posters, in the USA at least, can get their hands on the copy. Reduced Spell failure is not in the book. The lich queen isn't a special kind of undead, but she has a lot of weird background stuff going on and she wants to ascend to godhood... There are combat, messanger, worker and stealth type homunculi detailed in the book. |

| jedi818706-12-04, 08:20 AM | (And while we are at it: Any more info on Warforged Components?) You can get an armbow(repeating crossbow with magical bolts), armblade(+1 Bastardsword(But it appeares you can put any weapon that can be used in one hand on the base(it doesn't say this, but they have it on a Warforged juggernaught charecter))) battlefist(d8 slam attack, or monk unarmed damage is treated as one size larger, and can deal slashing damage) One of the cooler ones I found was the tauric belt- lets become a construct tauric lion with the command word. And there are more, I won't ruin it for al of you. |

| JohnnyONeal06-12-04, 08:53 PM | Are there any settlements in Xen'drik? At least one, though I don't know whether or not this is mentioned in the CS book. From Takasi's D&D Online interview (http://vault.ign.com/articles/520/520943p1.html): The treasures of Xen'drik are legendary, and those seeking to recover these relics of the long lost past are drawn here for their chance at fame and fortune. Stormreach is the port city that many adventurers call home - a foothold on the untamed jungles of this dangerous land. The major organizations of the world all recognize the important role that Xen'drik will play in the future of Eberron, and thus have made their presences known in Stormreach. The Coin Lords, the Emerald Claw, nearly all of the Dragonmarked Houses, and the Aerenal (just to name a few) are all working both out in the open and under the cover of shadows to carve out their space in the city. To say that opportunities abound for the clever adventurer would be a bit of an understatement. |

| The White Sorcerer06-13-04, 01:56 AM | Originally posted by shemov what are the relations between religions (Gods)? do they tolerate each other? what about The Sovereign Host and The Silver Flame relations? Hard to tell, what with the gods being so distant. The members of the Sovereign Host seem to like each other, but they seem to universally dislike the Dark Six. The Sovereign Host is NG and the Silver Flame is LG, so it would be logical if their churches at least tolerated each other. |
| shemov06-13-04, 02:31 AM | ok i will precise my question. Does The Sovereign Host claim the existence of The Silver Flame or vice versa? These religions seems to have different basis. |
| Taigis06-13-04, 03:02 AM | I couldn't help but laugh when the CSB referred to a member of the Church of the Silver Flame as a "Flamer." Edit: Oh and I think the opinion of the Silver Flame regarding the Sovereign Host might depend on whose voice is coming out of it at the time.... Taigis |

One thing I like about the Sovereign Host, by the way, is how they refer to the female deities as 'gods' instead of 'goddesses'. |
| ChronosCrow06-13-04, 04:36 AM | On page 264 there is a Quori shard called Ectoplasmic Armor. I was wondering if the armor bonus from it stacked with actual armor. I'm guessing not b/c it is to be treated as "a material, physical object w/out any special qualities other than armor bonus." Though it is made of ectoplasmic goo so I'm not sure. Is it actual armor that is seen around the wearer? Or is it more like an astral issue like the power Inertial armor which does not stack with real armor? |
| N'wah06-13-04, 06:11 AM | Since armor bonuses don't stack, and the quote you have given says it provides an armor bonus, I'd say it does not stack with regular armor. |
| jedi818706-13-04, 08:44 AM | Speaking of godly relationships: I was very pleased with the connection between the members of the Soveriegn Host and the Dark Six. Most are relate by blood or marriage. Its also interesting to note that the Dark Six are Soveriegn host rejects, so there more like one whole pantheon split, that two pantheons. |
| Taigis06-13-04, 09:46 AM | Which makes it all the more curious why the Dark Six were never given names. The Traveler I can understand as he's not related but I wonder why the rest weren't. Taigis |

The city of Ashtakala is a remenant of the demon empires. But its much more dangerous than Myth Drannor. Taigis |

But the knowledge of that name has been lost or intentionally excised; might there be some value in recovering it, or is the secrecy itself a source of power? |
| Hellcow06-14-04, 04:46 AM | Originally posted by Lasrifriir 1. Is there a detailed account of the Last War? Major battles, coups, estimated casualty counts, and the like? No. The war did span a century, and a detailed account would take up a lot of space -- and while it is an interesting subject that could spawn many adventure hooks, we had a lot of basic material to establish. There are places where specific incidents are mentioned, but there is no comprehensive battle-by-battle breakdown. If there is interest, this is certainly something that could be expanded upon in the future, whether as a concentrated description or a breakdown of how it affected a specific country. 3. Are the fiends active in the politics of Eberron? The native fiends -- the Lords of Dust -- are engaged in a wide variety of schemes, both political and otherwise. The Dreaming Dark is a force of outsiders working to manipulate the world. But the majority of extraplanar outsiders are more interested in their own planes than Eberron. While we're on that subject, do the Nine Hells/The Abyss exist somewhere within the cosmology? No. Demons and devils are scattered throught the various planes, as suits their nature. 4. Are there any great fallen empires or cities a la Myth Drannor in Eberron? Yes. Taigis has hit the big ones. Of course, if you want recent fallen cities, look no further than the Mournland. |
| Hellcow06-14-04, 05:02 AM | Originally posted by shemov Does The Sovereign Host claim the existence of The Silver Flame or vice versa? These religions seems to have different basis. The Silver Flame accepts the freedom of people to worship as they see fit, with the understanding that a) the church is actively spreading the faith of the Flame and b) the worship of evil powers -- the Cults of the Dragon Below, the Dark Six, etc -- will be met with hostility. The church of the Silver Flame is not so much dedicated to the spiritual conquest of the world as to the erradication of evil, both supernatural and mundane. The smith who says a prayer to Onatar isn't hurting anyone; a friar might try to sway him to the Flame, but he won't strike him down as a blasphemer or anything like that. A paladin of Dol Arrah and a paladin of the Flame would see eye to eye on many things, even if the follower of the Flame sought to win the faith of his comrade. But short answer: the Church of the Silver Flame does not acknowledge the divine authority of the Sovereign Host, but it does not condemn those who worship the Host (at least at the moment). The Dark Six, the CotDB, and the Blood of Vol are different issues (although many who follow the Blood of Vol are not necessarily evil). For their part, the followers of the Host are open to the idea that there are many powers in the world. Remember, the Silver Flame does not claim to have created the world (neither, for that matter, do the Sovereigns). The followers of the Host are happy to accept that there is a Silver Flame, and that it is a force with power in the world. But it's a strange impersonal force. While the gods don't physically manifest in the world, their followers still *think* of them in anthropomorphic terms, and the smith believes that Onatar may hear his prayer and guide his hand; thus the inhuman, abstract nature of the Silver Flame is something that most followers of the Host find difficult to identify with. As a side not, while God and Deity both work, I personally prefer to refer to members of the Sovereign Host as "sovereigns", regardless of gender. |

| Plane Sailing06-14-04, 06:16 AM | Originally posted by Hellcow what are people most interested in seeing? Is there some consensus out there, or does everyone have their own personal wish list? Speaking for myself, some of the most useful and interesting things would include 1. Plot hooks which play to the noir setting (i.e. snippets of background and culture/politics etc with a mini-adventure idea attached which helps illustrate the kinds of adventure you think play to Eberrons strengths) 2. What elements you think are important (or fundamental) to a noir setting 3. You ran a demo game of Eberron at a Con somewhere... would that adventure work as a web supplement? That illustrates the *kind* of thing I'd like to see without being too specific (I'll leave that for others!) Cheers |

Is there some consensus out there, or does everyone have their own personal wish list? I imagine there wont be much of a consensus on this. The things I would like to see are: 1. More details on the various lands of Khorvaire. Descriptions of more of the locations in those lands and maps of larger cities, fortresses, temples and towns would be excellent. 2. More indepth on lands outside of Khorvaire such as Argonnessen and Sarlona. I realize that some of these are being left intentionally mysterious but a few more details might enhance whats in the ECSB. 3. Anything that was cut from the CSB for space reasons! I think you indicated somewhere that some of the underwater cultures were detailed but cut from the CSB. That would be interesting to look at. 4. More on the Religions. Information on some of the more prominent members of those churches. 5. More details on the Last War. I think in another thread someone asked about a listing of the battles of the Last War. But a Chronology of major battles and alliance shifts would give a lot of adventure hooks. Those are just some ideas that I've thought about. Taigis |

Hopefully Hellcow will not say that the Midiclorians are what powers the flame and it's Clerics!!!! |
| debatedeus06-15-04, 12:43 PM | Umm...I'm so excited. I have it now too! I haven't gotten a chance to look it over, but the art is really really good. |

| Mops&Buckets06-15-04, 05:44 PM | Got mine today (along with a case of Giants of Legend minis ... sadly, no Warforged Titan :( ). I haven't read this thread completly, but has anybody mentioned how the chapter separation pages are like one page comics ... and the art looks like something Mike Mignola (Hellboy) might do ... wicked cool :D . (well, I just made a huge geek of myself. Guess it's back to the dungeon for me ...) |
| Son_of_Thunder06-15-04, 06:17 PM | Oh what glorious beings smile down upon me! I have it and with tax just over 25 bucks. Bought it at my FLGS (aka Hastings) for 40% off. I have had the chance to glance through it only(sucks I'm at work). Artwork is terrific, layout is exceptional, font is muy excellent. I have to really commend the production value of this book (FRCS is now relagated to 2nd shelf). Can't wait to get home. Son of Thunder |
| Harmony's Sorrow06-15-04, 06:37 PM | Grr.... dang middle of nowhere... has anyone in Utah seen it yet anywhere??? |
| Harmony's Sorrow06-15-04, 06:37 PM | double post |
| Megatron06-15-04, 06:56 PM | No sign of it in North Carolina yet, in fact my FLGS is still telling me June 18th is the release. I've been to every, and I do mean every, bookstore in the city. I literally went through every store listed in the phonebook (as far as books were concerned, obviously) |
| Mat Smith06-15-04, 07:47 PM | Finally, I've got a real copy too. It took a little while to work up the nerve to write my name on the inside cover. I really can't wait to get a new campaign running now. |

Just get on the freeway and head north to the Brigham City exit. Go through Sardine Canyon and there will be Logan. Home of Utah State University and Fredrico's Pizza (Best dang pizza in the whole northern territories I'll tell ya what). Hastings in on the corner of main and 4th north. Son of Thunder |

(Great articles by the way, Mat; not your typical "throw out the information to the masses" stuff - much love!) I've had the interior info since January (NDA's - gotta love 'em), as well as black-and-white copies of the concept art, and I'm still blown away by the physical look of the book. Bloody marvelous. Of course, hard as it is to put one's own name on one's own book, think about Keith having to autograph the book eight or nine thousand times. He's going to be sick of the book by the time GenCon rolls to an end. ... Which brings me to wonder, all of us talking about getting it... I wonder if Keith finally received his copy, or was the creator forced to buy it? ... All I know is Finland won the only Olympics that matter to me! Finland wins! They win! Do you believe in miracles!? Yes! O Dap (The Artist Formerly Known as Yea High) |
| stone_dog06-16-04, 09:38 PM | I got a good solid look at it today at Borders. I am picking it up on Friday, but it was damn hard to put it back on the shelf! |

I wonder if Kev Walker is emulating it or if it's something else. |

| Josh Wilhoyte06-17-04, 11:14 AM | Got my copy yesterday (though I won't be able to really read it until this weekend), it's a darn pretty book. I can't say more until I get a chance to devour it. Well, I can say that I've only bought three WotC products. I bought a DMG for my brother, I bought Song and Silence for my friend who owns ALL books ever written (he lost his copy), and I bought Eberron for myself. I should be careful, if this book is good I might have to buy the rest of Eberron. Great cover by the way. I like the glossy portion, that's cool. |
| tylerthehobo06-17-04, 12:53 PM | I posted this in the "First Impressions" thread, but this seems to be where the action is... Yeah, I'm just asking to be flamed. I gotta say, though, I picked up a copy of Eberron yesterday at my local giganto-book-store, and am really impressed. I was just starting D&D when Dragonlance came out, and was DMing when FR came out. Eberron's really captured the whole feeling of excitement of being in on the ground floor of something big, for me. I can't wait to see the books, video games, supplements, and other tie ins that I hope are developed. Okay, now that my gushing's over, let me get into my notions on why Eberron is the new FR (if that's something good in your book)... The whole setting is developed from the bottom-up. This is really impressive. So many off-the-shelf campaigns that you encounter basically just assume the same preconceived notions of what a cleric is, what a bard is, what an elf is. Baker and company really went to great lengths to explain what a cleric is *in their setting*, what bards do *in their setting*, what elves are like *in their setting*. This makes for an extremely strong setting to introduce new players to. There's no complicated back story (like there is in the Realms now, with 20 years of game time having passed since the original set came out), the ideas are all new, and the way that the rules are seamlessly interwoven into the campaign text proves to help me understand the 3.5 rules all the better. Excellent job, Mr. Baker. I look forward to trying this campaign out with my home group. -Tyler the Hobo |
| Necropolis06-17-04, 01:26 PM | HI I don't know a lot about this setting, but what is the Silver flame ? Is it a kind of god ? An entity ? How it looks like ? who believes in it ? It's more powerful then normal god ? Thanks |
| ozmar06-17-04, 01:29 PM | Ooh ooh! I know! I know! Is it a kind of god? Yes An entity? Yes How it looks like? Its like a flame, and kind of silvery. who believes in it? I do. It's more powerful then normal god? Yes. Ozmar the Smart-Aleck |
