| Lord Nat05-24-04, 09:33 PM | I know this might sound nuts but when I really think about it Eberron sounds a little like a Final Fantasy setting... I mean Airship, Light Rails, Robots (War Forged)... Sounds a little FF7, FF8, and FF10 (10-2)... |
| TwinBahamut05-25-04, 02:01 PM | First off, you are actually not the first to think this one up. Hellcow (keith Baker) got so pestered by this idea about a month ago that he revealed the he actually never played a Final Fantasy game. This is, of course, a horrible crime, but we can let that pass for now because of the brilliance of the setting. |
| stranger5905-25-04, 02:08 PM | I'm even more interested now! Never played a FF game... that thought pleases me. No spikey haired teens... well, until you let players into the setting.... |
| WizO_TheCheat05-25-04, 03:38 PM | Bumped over to the Eberron boards. |
| JohnnyONeal05-25-04, 04:05 PM | Final Fantasy wasn't a direct influence, and the setting still has more in common with "standard" D&D like Forgotten Realms. But I think that people who enjoy Final Fantasy games, Miyazaki movies, and other top-shelf Japanese fantasy settings/stories will find many things to like about Eberron. |
| Lord Nat05-25-04, 04:33 PM | Never played a FF game and came up with some thing that sounds a lot like a FF setting... Great minds really must thing alike. I am really happy that is seem a little FFish. Just a little bit ago I made a post saying WotC needs to make a Deal with SE and make some stuff based off the games they make. Then I find out about this. Sounds like it will run FF style games in this setting really well. I am going to have to preorder mine ASAP. |
| fourmyle05-25-04, 05:51 PM | I think, that while Eberron does have a few elements that smack of the FF series (not like that's a bad thing) it really isn't about over-the-top action, pseudo-technology and 10-foot long swords...it's pulp/noir, which is pretty far removed from that animeish sort of action (not that there hasn't been noir/pulp anime, but you get my point). I think in Eberron, you're far more likely to find Paladins on horseback, with shiny armor and bastard swords fighting a hord of hobgoblins swinging spiked chains than you are to stumble into a giant, mechanical labyrinth filled with robots that shoot missles at you constantly ala Final Fantasy. Of course...FF 1, with it's one airship, it's one sentient construct/robot-thing, and standard-fantasy PCs (Fighter, Thief, Mages...) is pretty similar, but, who can say that's not D&D? Anyway, if you want D&D with a slightly different spin (receiving your latest covert mission from the dwarf in the wide-brimmed hat in a darkened tavern, spying on the high priest suspected of elicit dealings with the Dreaming dark, or arguing over who was going to toss the whip or the idol first as the giant boulder rolls at you with growing speed...), that's Eberron...if you want 10-foot long swords, jumping over trees, magic-powered Mecha, and boat-loads of magi-tech...go play FF, well, that or look into that anime-inspired, amusingly over-powered fantasy game put out by that other company...the one that rhymes with Spite-Golf...cause it ain't Eberron. |

Or be masters of the air that even the sound of your name makes Merchants pee them selfs. Or Robots seeking a place in the human world. Or a PI that rides the rails looking for work. I see Eberron being almost endless in the things you can do. |
| stone_dog05-26-04, 02:42 AM | And yet, just for the hell of it I went and made a gestalt cloistered cleric/artificer named Cid. The siren call of FF is strong indeed. |
| debatedeus05-26-04, 07:19 AM | You're mostly talking about noir when you talk about the stuff that Final Fantasy isn't, and you're right. (The most noir final fantasy game is probably VIII, followed closely by VII) But Final Fantasy is Pulpy. Pulp action is over the top a little. Think about Indiana Jones shooting the guy in the chest who's swinging his sword around, or in Once Upon a Time in Mexico (A pulp classic) where the main character shoots off people's kneecaps and sends them sliding around the floor. In a fantasy setting this stuff is very much in line with hopping from lighting rail car to lightning rail car with your greatsword in hand trying to capture the president of a nation that supports and evil sorceress, or battling against a crazy geonocidal queen who is releasing creatures of incredible destructive power because she is being manipulated by your mysterious, evil, ambiguously-female clone brother. I guess I mean to say that the attitudes of pulpy-ness are in line with Final Fantasy. |
| JohnnyONeal05-26-04, 07:50 AM | It's hard to make generalizations when it comes to Final Fantasy. Pretty much every Final Fantasy game up through Final Fantasy VI (released as III in the U.S.) was conventional fantasy with a few unusual elements thrown in. Final Fantasy VI started to blend of sci-fi and fantasy, a trend which really hit its peak in VII (the Final Fantasy that most people are most familiar with). I've never played VIII, but it looked to be very modern-day. Final Fantasy IX was a trip back to the series' fantasy roots, while X had a balance similar to VI. The massively-multiplayer XI is almost pure fantasy, while the upcoming XII looks to be a blend. Overall, Eberron is actually more exotic than some of the early games, but definitely lower-tech than most recent Final Fantasy games. In FF, the tech blatantly looks like mechs, most of the airships are techy-looking, and the technology is generally based on electronics. Eberron won't have guns, the "robots" are made of animated wood and armor, the airships don't have propellers (that we know of), and the technology doesn't seem to get any higher than gears and simple machines. The only piece of modern-looking technology we've seen is the Lightning Rail, and even that doesn't look to have much in the way of moving parts. |
| debatedeus05-26-04, 09:22 AM | It was not the Tech that I was saying will be like Eberron; I'm saying that the FF games have some of the Eberron feel. Almost all Final Fantasy games have the pulpy feel that Eberron champions. Some have the noir, but not nearly as much as most of us feel we can run. |

| Masterful_Norg05-26-04, 03:54 PM | Personally I love over the top action and thrilling excitement. My Eberron games are going to get a shot in the arm from it. As a DM I am constantly having to make new houserules for stuff like running on walls (not the psionic 'up the wall' ability), rules for determining how far one can throw any object depending on its weight and the throwers strength score, how far the range of a composite bow should extend as the strength requirements for its usage become higher, and completely new round=1 second rules for fast paced combat, the use of the jump skill for more powerful blows, such as flying kicks (not the blade dancers ability), and rules where strength and dex affect movement speed. As a DM I am always trying to pump more and more action into my games until my players are jumping out of their seets and hooting like chimpanzees. Go and check this websight (http://www.square-enix.co.jp/dvd/ff7ac/) out to see some trailers for the new movie Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children and some examples of some real over the top action scenes! Check under the trailers section. (Hint: you need to have Flash Player 7 to view this websight.) |
| Harmony's Sorrow05-27-04, 05:47 PM | OMG I can't wait to see FFVII - AC! That's gotta be awesome! |
| Masterful_Norg05-27-04, 08:22 PM | Pretty Action packed isn't it? I just love the fight scenes! :fight!: :D |
