| Dragonklaw8209-04-05, 11:07 PM | Ok, Eberron's been out for a while. Published adventures, supplements, novels, even a video game or two on the horizon. My question is, what character from a current published source looks like he (or she) could become as beloved a fantasy character as the likes of Drizz't, Elminster, and company? |
| Charles Phipps09-04-05, 11:10 PM | Dandra Pierce Singe |
| The Wilgar09-04-05, 11:33 PM | Jode, even though he took a long walk off a short airship pier. Still, in a book based on a gaming system that has spells like raise dead, he may not be gone for good *crossed fingers*. |
| InfinityStar809-04-05, 11:40 PM | Dandra Pierce Singe HELL YES! Also I really liked Daine with Lei. But Daine really was cool. |
| Grug the Just09-05-05, 12:39 AM | My money is on The Lord of Blades. If not, Jode was awesome. |
| Ikiru09-05-05, 01:24 AM | Geth has my vote. |
| Shas'O09-05-05, 01:32 AM | Jode, even though he took a long walk off a short airship pier. Still, in a book based on a gaming system that has spells like raise dead, he may not be gone for good *crossed fingers*. Er.... considering what happened to him... both from the villian and from the main plot with the shards, I doubt hes going to come back. |
| Save-vs-DM09-05-05, 05:48 AM | I gotta go with either: From most likely to least likely Daine Pierce Jode Lei Lord of Blades Merrix d'Cannith Just my thoughts. Cheers, Save vs DM |
| Fenian09-05-05, 11:15 AM | The anonymous female on the cover of the explorers handbook... Hubba hubba hubba...woot....wooot woooot! sha-zing! ;) |
| (Psi)SeveredHead09-05-05, 11:57 AM | It's Eberron. Dead characters don't come back. I like using the Lord of Blades, or better yet, one of his travelling henchmen. |
| Kid SixXx09-05-05, 12:53 PM | I will toss my support behind the Lord of Blades. If anyone should represent Eberron in an iconic fashion it should be him. |
| Lokiyn09-05-05, 01:27 PM | I honestly hope Iconic Characters Die or move into a position where they are no longer active through inability to act rather than by choice. I don't dislike the characters themselves i just don't want any more Elminster's. I would be perfectly fine if every so often a current iconic character passes on (death move accident etc) and another rises. So you could have one period being the time of the lord of blades while the next period is dominated by a related character like the LoB apprentice seeking revenge for the removal of the Lob. |
| Charles Phipps09-05-05, 01:53 PM | I disagree. I think it's fine for an iconic character to never rise in ability but still have amazing adventures. |
| Medesha09-05-05, 02:29 PM | It's Eberron. Dead characters don't come back. :uh-huh: You must play in a different Eberron than me. I've heard the name Daine before in the Dragonshards, so I'll throw my vote in with him. Don't know who Jode is, but now I know that he dies, so the drama of that book is slightly reduced... |
| The White Sorcerer09-05-05, 03:22 PM | Daine. 'Cause he's cool in a classic way. |
| Tek09-05-05, 04:17 PM | The anonymous female on the cover of the explorers handbook... Hubba hubba hubba...woot....wooot woooot! sha-zing! ;) Could be. She's already in two Eberron books, as she was also on the cover of the Sharn: City of Towers handbook. |
| RagingDemon09-05-05, 04:57 PM | I liked Lei, being a member of my favorite house, Cannith and also my favorite eberron class, the artificer... I also vote for Daine and also Kandler from Marked for Death which I found to be an interesting novel. I' d like to see Pierce getting some popularity but I really can' t imagine a warforged being as popular as Drizzt, Elminster or the others... |
| Arcane Guyver09-05-05, 05:50 PM | Iconic? Dandra, Geth & Pierce, definitely. If he lives long enough, Dham'ir. Daine & Lei have promise, as well as the female paladin from 'Marked for Death' (can't remember her name for some reason :(). |
| InfinityStar809-05-05, 07:59 PM | ...as well as the female paladin from 'Marked for Death' (can't remember her name for some reason :(). Ya, well, it's a Female Paladin with Red Hair and a big flaming sword. What is there not to like? She was made for the geeky male readers out there (Thank you by the way). I just hope she litens up a little. Also her name is Sallah. |
| (Psi)SeveredHead09-05-05, 08:16 PM | :uh-huh: You must play in a different Eberron than me. Nope. Mid-level clerics are really rare, and nobody in Jode's party was a cleric. Yeah, we need to use spoiler tags. But at least you don't know how they died. |
| Medesha09-05-05, 08:21 PM | Clerics of any level are rare, most are adepts. But you said "Dead characters don't come back" as if it were impossible. I know my party has a cleric capable of casting Raise Dead already. He's only done it once successfully, but it can be done. |
| Raziel_Brokodar09-05-05, 08:29 PM | So far nobody, and that's a good sign... we don't want the setting messed up and ruined yet... hehe :P |
| Majorafire7709-05-05, 08:34 PM | Daine and crew won't be iconic Eberron characters. Thunvarch, the half-orc bard who apparantly made the Across Eberron booklet (see his self-portrait on page 3) and who apparantly wrote the introduction to the Explorer's Handbook should be iconic. Sure, I'd love to see more of Daine and friends after the novel series is through, but Thunvarch kicks that much ass. So far nobody, and that's a good sign... we don't want the setting messed up and ruined yet... hehe :P There's nothing wrong with iconic characters. I'd gladly accept Thunvarch statted out as a level 4 or 5 bard. Plus, even if he was statted out to be an Elminster-type figure, it wouldn't matter much. I have all the proof I need that high-level NPCs don't to much to a campaign setting right here (http://boards.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=477422). |
| Dhakaani Heir09-05-05, 09:21 PM | What about the characters representing the various classes in the ECS - they are certainly iconic in that are meant to showcase the eberron flavour. And they certainly do a good job of that, personal favouries are Janar and Thondred |
| Gnome_Dragon_Disciple09-05-05, 09:22 PM | Lei is quite possibly the most iconic character yet published. Forgotten Realms has its dual-scimitar-wielding Drow Ranger thwarting evils left and right, Eberron has its Excoriate Dragonmarked Artificer yet to prover herself... but you know she will. I wouldn't be surprised if the end of the novel series either puts Lei at the head of House Cannith or brings her to toppling the House altogether... In either case, it would cause a major shift in the politics of Khorvaire and make Lei a force to be reckoned with in any canon Eberron campaign. |
| Tek09-05-05, 09:34 PM | Lei is quite possibly the most iconic character yet published. In either case, it would cause a major shift in the politics of Khorvaire and make Lei a force to be reckoned with in any canon Eberron campaign. I doubt any of the head of House Cannith or topple House Cannith will happen in the novels. I do believe she'll prove herself, but I just don't see something as major as that happening. We'll see, though. |
| Nived09-05-05, 11:28 PM | Daine, Lei, and Pierce have a lot of potential to be the iconic Eberron party (like The Companions of Dragonlance or Drizzit and his crew)... but so do Geth, Singe, and Dandra. I wont really comment on the others since I haven't read Marked for Death Yet.... and the less said about Crimson Talisman the better. |
| Splendide09-05-05, 11:42 PM | Lord of Blades has all the signs of being an annoying fanboy iconic. I loved it in the ECS when he was meant to be a myth, because then I could completely ignore him. Now he's in every bloody book! |
| Kerrara09-06-05, 01:15 AM | Geth (presuming that he sticks around for the next 2 books). He's got the troubled background, the distinctive style (sword and great-gauntlet), the iconic eberron race, and is distinctly "badass" in a way that most other characters in Eberron books just lack. (Face it, Lei may have Eberron written all over her, but artificers rank near bards in terms of coolness/powerful/badass factor.) |
| InfinityStar809-06-05, 01:45 AM | Geth does have a lot going for him. I would really love to she his Great-Gauntlet in an Eberron book so it can be 100% offical. I kinda made my own but I want offical anyways. |
| Gnome_Dragon_Disciple09-06-05, 01:54 AM | Geth (presuming that he sticks around for the next 2 books). He's got the troubled background, the distinctive style (sword and great-gauntlet), the iconic eberron race, and is distinctly "badass" in a way that most other characters in Eberron books just lack. (Face it, Lei may have Eberron written all over her, but artificers rank near bards in terms of coolness/powerful/badass factor.) Damn straight Artificers rank near Bards in terms of coolness/powerful/badass factors! Right near the top, that is... Gnome bards IMC are NOT to be messed around with, and with good reason. A few social graces can be all a bard needs to eliminate his foes... Or at least, to fool a few higher-ups in [insert nation here]'s Government to believe you're a threat to the state and need to be eliminated. And Artificers... Well, suffice to say, fooling around with those who know more about how the things you use most work than you do is NEVER a good idea. That's what makes Black Hat hackers so dangerous and is the principle behind negotiating with auto mechanics. Overlook the artificer at your peril... |
| Majorafire7709-06-05, 09:25 AM | Don't iconic characters usually start out presented in a sourcebook then put into novels instead of the other way around (lidda, jozan, etc...)? I don't think any of the characters from the books will ever be as iconic as Thunvarch is right now anyway. He's been established since before the ECS came out hasn't he? Plus, I think that any intros that he writes would be better and more interesting than the intros than any of the other characters suggested here would (because it seems like that's what setting-specific iconic characters do). Thunvarch would actually know the stuff required for an intro to a Sarlona sourcebook. He would've heard stories and stuff like that. As of this point in the series, Daine doesn't know anything about Sarlona does he? Same goes with many other topics. Thunvarch does this crap for a living. Daine doesn't. No character is more qualified than Thunvarch. |
| Kayman09-06-05, 09:48 AM | Who are Geth, Singe, and Dandra? In which novel do they play? Id prefer that ltttle goblin "girl" from City of towers or Erandis dīVol (its Erandis, isnt it?) |
| InfinityStar809-06-05, 10:44 AM | Who are Geth, Singe, and Dandra? In which novel do they play? They are in "The Dragon Below: Book 1, The Binding Stone." |
| Pozas09-06-05, 12:56 PM | Lei is quite possibly the most iconic character yet published. Forgotten Realms has its dual-scimitar-wielding Drow Ranger thwarting evils left and right, Eberron has its Excoriate Dragonmarked Artificer yet to prover herself... but you know she will. In either case, it would cause a major shift in the politics of Khorvaire and make Lei a force to be reckoned with in any canon Eberron campaign. Since the novels take place two years before the campaign setting timeline, it's highly unlikely that the novels will do anything to change the status quo of the setting. |

No character is more qualified than Thunvarch. I believe the thread was started to pick the newest fanboy icon, like Drizzt. Not necessarily the iconic group for the books like Jozan and crew from the core books. |
| megamania09-06-05, 01:44 PM | If I had to chose one it would be Lei but in truth there hasn't been a character yet to capture my imagination in the novels or accessory books. I think Kauis has a chance of being a lovable Lord Soth type if treated right. |
| Hellcow09-06-05, 03:20 PM | Thunvarch would actually know the stuff required for an intro to a Sarlona sourcebook. He would've heard stories and stuff like that. Yes, but if you're dealing with a Sarlona sourcebook, do you really want to word of a Khorvaire bard who's only heard about it? I'd look to one of the kalashtar of Adar, or possibly even an Inspired lord to tell us about their homeland. Thunvarch's great for Khorvaire and even Xen'drik, but for Sarlona I'd personally want an expert. |
| Hellcow09-06-05, 03:23 PM | Since the novels take place two years before the campaign setting timeline... As minor teasers go, The Shattered Land actually takes place almost a year after City of Towers. CoT was picking up on the characters right after the war, but some day they may actually get caught up with the campaign timeline. |
| Joni-san09-06-05, 04:20 PM | Is that a hint that the third book will also take rough "jump" forward in time by say... a year, just like The Shattered Land? ;) Then again, you will propably answer something in the style of "The swallow flies to the east"* :P *Now, does anybody have a memory good enough to remember this phrase. It has been been uttered before, in a context relating to Eberron :angelhide |
| Joni-san09-06-05, 04:24 PM | As others have mentioned, the Lord of Blades does have qualities that makes him Iconic. Same thing with the CoT gang. :king: |
| Rys Tet'nei09-06-05, 04:49 PM | I'm going to go with Daine, Pierce, and Lei. Out of all the characters in the Eberron novels so far, Pierce would have to be my favourite either way. Jode may have made something of a name for himself, if he hadn't died. And even if he's brought back, he just wins the cheese award there, I say. That crazy LOBster, too. But it's more so that he's going to likely be "Most-Used Villain of Eberron", in comparison to any others. I mean, Vol hasn't gotten near the attention she deserves. Yet. But yeah. I'd sum it up with Daine, Pierce, Lei, and the LoB. -Rys |
| Arcane Guyver09-06-05, 05:37 PM | Ya, well, it's a Female Paladin with Red Hair and a big flaming sword. What is there not to like? She was made for the geeky male readers out there (Thank you by the way). No kidding! :) The "main character" in any D&D rpg I play is always a female paladin, usually with red hair. So Sallah was a real surprise for me. No more love for Dandra? :weep: |
| scissors09-06-05, 09:29 PM | I may have to reread the other books... I've read City of Towers (novel) twice but I can't seem to remember Geth or Singe.. where will I find these characters? As far I knew, the Crimson Talisman, Mark of Death and City of Towers were the only novels out at the moment. |
| EscherEnigma09-06-05, 10:43 PM | I'd vote for Geth (from the Binding Stone) or Lei (from City of Towers). They've both got Eberron written all over them, had definite 'cool' scenes in their books, he took out a dragon and she beat a minotaur in a fist fight! Not to mention the whole "I've got a warforged in my pocket!" trick she has..., and if theres any novel character to get the 'most likely to be copied' award, its going to be the exoriate cannith artificer. (Heck, I had one in my first Eberron campaign, and that was before me or my players had read the book) |
| Gnome_Dragon_Disciple09-07-05, 02:06 AM | As a DM introducing Eberron bit by bit to my players, the Excoriate formerly-Cannith Artificer is both cliche' AND great teaching mechanism to explain to players and readers both the significance of Dragonmarked houses. |
| Straylight09-07-05, 03:14 AM | As much as I'd love to see Lei or Pierce as an Iconic character, I don't think that's going to happen. Both of them have the "outcast" thing going on, and both of them are unique to Eberron, being an Artificer and a Warforged, respectively, but I don't think either of them are interesting or Kickass enough to gain "Icon" status. Lei came close, though. Geth, however... 1. He's got the troubled past thing down. 2. He's got lots of old enemies and some unexpected friends out there thanks to said past. 3. The Great-gauntlet is a very memorable weapon, up there with the scimitars in terms of both coolness and in the way that the weapon is, as Singe notes, perfectly him. Just as (much as I hate to say this) Drizz't is probably the template for dual-wielders, nobody else will ever manage to be quite as awesome with the Great-gauntlet as Geth is. 4. Lost someone dear to him in the beginning of his adventures. 5. Is uniquely Eberron (Shifter). The thing that is different here, though, is that a lot of the other iconic names (Bigby and Mordenkainen, notably) were actually PCs at one point. The way Greenwood writes Elminster, I suspect he was a PC at once point as well. Dunno about Drizz't, since I won't touch Salvatore's writing with a Mage Hand. |
| Hellcow09-07-05, 05:11 AM | As much as I'd love to see Lei or Pierce as an Iconic character... Frankly, I'm surprised people are even considering Pierce, because he was so quiet in City of Towers. As I've said elsewhere, he gets more focus time in The Shattered Land, and I imagine that will affect people's opinion of him, for better or for worse. And there may be more to his history than you think... |
| Straylight09-07-05, 05:37 AM | Oh, I KNOW there's more history to Pierce than we think. That's one of the reasons people are considering him: we know next to nothing about him, but there's obviously something damned interesting going on with everyone's favorite tin man. Plus, he came off stoic without being aloof, arrogant or brooding. Looking at some of the other people that are writing for Wizards at the moment, who shall remain unnamed, that's unusual. What surprised me is that people are mentioning Jode. Was I the only one who cheered (MAJOR CoT spoiler)when they found his corpse stripped of the dragonmark? It seems to me that all he did was annoy and interfere. I was hoping through the entire book that Lei would "accidentally" nudge him off a bridge... |
| Fordel09-07-05, 07:20 AM | Frankly, I'm surprised people are even considering Pierce, because he was so quiet in City of Towers. As I've said elsewhere, he gets more focus time in The Shattered Land, and I imagine that will affect people's opinion of him, for better or for worse. And there may be more to his history than you think... I'm not sure if people will copy his game stats or personal flare for combat, but I do expect to see alot of Warforged PC's emulateing his personality and outlook. People keep saying Pierce because he is the archtype for a Warforged PC. He's the only Warforged written so far (to my knowledge) that seems like an actual warforged, not a generic personality in warforged clothing. Baffled by the social world, comfortable in the martial world, generally apathetic to his entire situation and yet... he's starting to ask himself (and his comrades) the important questions. He's exactly what everyone expects a warforged to be and is evolving the way everyone expects a WF character to evolve. He's everything you want out of a warforged, loyal, dependable, reliable, selfless and practically fearless. Pierce is the Status Quo WF'd soldier in personality and outlook He's the base alot of people needed for there own WF'd PCs. It's one thing to read a race description from a rule book, its another thing to have a living, breathing (maybe not breathing) character to watch. His reletive silence, is just part of the mindset. |
| Mortok09-07-05, 07:26 AM | Not to forget Batul from Binding Stone. Heīs like a big Yoda. And also one of the most powerfull novel characters right now. |
| Arcane Guyver09-07-05, 12:38 PM | I may have to reread the other books... I've read City of Towers (novel) twice but I can't seem to remember Geth or Singe. They're from the EXCELLENT novel, the Binding Stone (currently my favorite of the Eberron books). |
| Majorafire7709-07-05, 01:11 PM | Yes, but if you're dealing with a Sarlona sourcebook, do you really want to word of a Khorvaire bard who's only heard about it? I'd look to one of the kalashtar of Adar, or possibly even an Inspired lord to tell us about their homeland. Thunvarch's great for Khorvaire and even Xen'drik, but for Sarlona I'd personally want an expert. A Kalashtar of Adar? No thanks. That sounds like too much of a biased review of Sarlona. We've been getting the same anti-Riedra stuff for a while now, I think that it would be more interesting to get a review of the nation by someone who can tell us why Riedra is good and why Khorvaire sucks in their opinion. You're right, Thunvarch isn't the best choice. Now I'm starting to think more along the lines of an average Riedran telling us about his homeland. |
| Belmorn09-07-05, 02:28 PM | I would like to see a book about Jodeīs previous adventures |
| WizO_Sith09-07-05, 02:40 PM | I've got to go with Daine. His flaws make his actions all the more heroic. What makes a character really work for me - no matter what the setting or genre - is that that he/she be someone I can relate to. Daine feels as familliar as a pair of old jeans... A guy that genuinely wants to do the right thing and is wildly frustrated by the fact that the right thing is rarely a clear, black and white, choice. As for the Iconics of Eberron... They're actually in the Campaign Setting book: Thonderd (Dwarf Artifacer) Corrash (Halfling Barbarian) Vanira (Gnome Bard) Kulduth (Half-Elf Cleric) Janar (Half-Orc Druid) Azm (Warforged Fighter) Kasha (Human Monk) Thiera (Human Paladin) Halharan (Kalashtar Psion) Sarav (Shifter Ranger) Tam (Changeling Rogue) Ural D'Orian (Human Sorcerer) Baristi (Shifter Wizard) |
| Isran_Imrador09-09-05, 05:33 AM | What about the changeling psion from marked for death! ( :embarrass what was here name again...) She turns to the host or the flame and starts doing good deeds like hunting werewolf and converting some karnns to SF.. ;) Sallah and (the Crossbow shifter) :embarrass are also good icons! Love the intro in the Exhb! we want more from our bard friend ;) Daine will become a heir of Siberys and move to stormreach to slay drow and giants... ;) :P |
