I just wanted to make a general list of ideas for Eberron oriented toward making irritating Edymnion as much as possible:

1. Play a strongheart halfling Ashbound druid/renegade mastermaker/warforged juggernaut/reforged

2. Have a male changeling Favored Soul of the Traveller/Warshaper travel through the Plane of Shadow to Oerth, seeking to be impregnated by Olidammara in female shape in the hopes of uniting Olidammara from the Oeridean pantheon and the Traveller from the Eberronian pantheon into one trickster deity of unfathomable power and cunning.

3. Play a big-breasted female warforged Vow of Poverty monk/drunken master who creates beer to drink using Create Food and Drink from her Lesser Mark of Hospitality, since she was originally a Ghallanda halfling who was reincarnated as a warforged.

4. Have your grey elf wizard/cataclysm mage rewrite the draconic prophecy so that he ends up being the only being in Eberron to attain divine rank and becomes the overdeity of Eberron, sending spelljamming ships to spread his rule to other worlds like Abeir-Toril.

Off the top of my head?

Sorcerers controlling elemental crafts all willy nilly.

Reincarnated Dragonmark characters (Hobgob with the mark of Siberys).

Novels being made official canon, even Crimson Talisman, which brings me to my next one.

Half Elves with Mark of Passage.

"How do," Sun Elves, Moon Elves, Mountain Elves, Super Elves, Kebler Elves, Wood Elves, Broken Elves, "Fit into Eberron" threads.

Daelkyr Half Bloods, Changlings, Shifters, Illumins, Half<blanks>, and every other subrace you can think of getting Dragonmarks because they have some blood of a base race in them.

People actually liking the Sidebars in the Player's Guide to Eberron.

Guns.

Tome of Battle.

People who like the fluff sections of Races of Eberron and consider it a fine source of Eberron information.

I miss any?

Come on, nobody has remembered the hate I've got on for Magic of Incarnum? Only roleplaying book I've ever returned to the store and demanded my money back for?

And then there's needless 3.5 changes in general (like how a 3.5 archer can shoot into a crowd of children to pick off a frog, and there is 0% chance that he could hit a child, because 3.5 no longer has rules for striking cover, or how utterly useless Overland Flight is).

Don't you have a mad-on for the Favored Soul?

-FFNot so much for the Favored Soul, I just like using it as my poster child for "There is no way in hell that both the Favored Soul and the Sorcerer can both be balanced." Either full spontaneous caster progression is so powerful as to be worth giving up all other class abilities, or it isn't.

Oh man don't get me started on the not-hitting-cover rules change.

Actually, now that I think about it...what's with those arrow breakage rules anyways? I mean they are the exact OPPOSITE of real life.

In real life, if you miss your target, your arrow flies off out into the desert and you'll never ever find it or if you are indoors, it hits a wall where the head either breaks off or jams up into the shaft every time. If you hit your target, your arrow only breaks if you hit a solid bone dead on like the spine or a limb bone. So the rules should be miss your target = break/loss 100%, hit your target = break 50%. The rules are totally backwards I say. Backwards! Let's hijack this thread with 14 pages of heated discussion!

Yea I have a question:

Are there ANY classes outside of the Players Handbook that you like? Not many, mainly because the ones outside the PHB (and several in it) violate what I believe is the fundamental principle of a base class, that they are broad and generic (like the Rogue or the Fighter) that can be turned into a vast array of possible characters through feat/skill selection and roleplaying. Any base class that does one thing and one thing only should be a PrC (and yes, I'm including the Monk and the Paladin in that lot of "classes that should have been PrC").

To tell the truth, I'm rather fond of the generic classes that were in (I think) Unearthed Arcana. Warrior, Expert, and Spellcaster. I honestly do not believe there is any character anyone can imagine (that can be built in D&D anyway) that you can't build with those three classes and some roleplaying. Same with races. If you use nothing but human mechanics and a point buy, there is no race you can't do by spending the bonus feat on something appropriate and roleplaying up the race (like an elf could be as easy as spending the bonus feat on Alertness for those extra-keen senses).

Been spending a lot of time with the True20/M&M2e system because of the point buy nature of character creation in it. Finally, an *almost* perfectly balanced point buy system that has the right mindset (take the base mechanics, and describe them however the hell you want).

Honestly, I'd freaking love to play in an Eberron game that uses the M&M2e rules.

I'd love to see something like this for 4th ed. Start from scratch, roll ability scores (or better yet, use the point buy system), select BAB and save progression, then pick a # of skill points and hit points per level, and then based on that, a certain number of special abilities per level. The permutations would be astronomical, and yet it would be easy enough for a beginner to put together a decent class. I'm not familiar with the other systems you mentioned, so if it's similar, forgive me.

Oh, and to annoy you, I suggest the best way to look at Eberron is from a "black and white" moral perspective, that detect evil is a foolproof way of determining who's the party's enemy.

Interestingly enough I agree with you completely. I'd love to run a campaign with those three classes (I might need to make a generic Psionic class as well...), races I would prefer to keep just because it's my style but the PC's ugh.

I'm sorry to rant about my friends but they are the most pig headed... I mean they won't play ANY character that isn't in the Players Handbook. When I showed them Unearthed Arcana's generic classes they just stuck out their tongues and said they were too... well generic.

I guess I can't blame Wizards for having specialized base classes then. After all the role of producers is to simply give what consumers want... *sigh* tis a vicious cycle.

This may have been said but What of Edymnion's option on Psionics? I know you have a dislike of many of the classes out there and on some of your points I am forced to agree. The most recent being that many of the new classes should have been prestige classes, qnd that one can create many different characters from the PHB classes. But sometimes it is nice tohave a change or a one trick pony. It makes the character intresting in my option. Much like having a party that does not have all th e traditional roles filled out. I used to agree, then a player wanted to play a Bard and I was unable to easily recreate the class. Plus, the Warlock is starting to grow on me and that's a no go too.

2. Include Sigil into the Eberron Cosmology, setting the stage for Larloch & Iuz to compete for Vol's affections.

4. Provide undeniable proof that House Cannith is responsible for the Day of Mourning.

I like Psionics just fine.I used to agree, then a player wanted to play a Bard and I was unable to easily recreate the class.Skillsman 3/Spellcaster 1 and just throw in the roleplaying that you have to sing to cast spells. Not really difficult, IMO, if you just try to replicate the flavor of the bard and not insisting on replicating every little mechanical detail.

Bard is essentially just a rogue with some minor spellcasting instead of sneak attack.

You may get your wish; Star Wars just moved to Talent Trees and a 5-archetypal class system (which was a popular move with many veterans of the system, who have long co-opted d20 Modern and d20 Future for their Star Wars games). Depending on how well it falls out with the d20 community in general, the archetypal class (which is basically a balanced set of BAB, HD, Saves and Class Skills/SP per level) with talent trees may become a d20 standard. They're saying the basic five classes and three talent trees per class works out to some absurd amount of permutations. Once we can actually look over them all to determine viable builds, I imagine it will still be somewhere upwards of 1,000 possibilities at 10th level.

Also, I would imagine that the inclusion of the Samurai base class would significantly irritate Edymnion. I make this assumption based on the fact that it would significantly irritate me.

* Have your artificer figure out how to build warforged from scratch without needing a Mark of Making or a creation forge, and create a new custom warforged: a half-celestial, half-dragon, half-fiendish, half-fey, phrenic warforged.

* Play a dwarf cleric of the Undying Court, and when one of your goblin party members dies, bring her back as an Undying Councilor. Then rebuke her and keep her as your servant.

* In Eberron, there's no proof as to which gods exist or do not exist, so go ahead and play a Champion of Corellon Larethian. It's every bit as valid as a Sovereign Host worshipper, after all.

* Have your level 16 kalashtar telepath/thrallherd send his level 15 and 14 thralls on virtual suicide missions -- and insist that new level 15 and 14 thralls will show up to serve him within 24 hours, even if he's already gone through dozens of Eberron's rare level 14+ characters.

And if you're curious as to what a historical ninja is really like? Ask heretic888. He's given the best and most accurate explanations of anyone I've ever seen in my life.Historical ninja were samurai, plain and simple. But again, I'm not talking about perfectly replicating every little detail, but you can get a character that is close enough that with proper roleplaying is acceptable. The ninja is a stealth based assassin type character who focuses on, surprise surprise, stealth, unexpected tricks, and the feudal japanese version of "one shot, one kill". Everything that the Rogue can already do.Also if obvisously Edymnion has never seen a bard well played before if he thinks they are just rogues w/ spellcasting. No, I have seen well played bards, I've played several of them (well, not necissarily saying that they were well played because I played them, but you know what I mean).

The main problem people have with the use of generic classes is that they have trouble seperating the idea of the class from the existing mechanical implimentation.

The bard is an entertainment based character that is a jack of all trades. They sing, they dance, they know all the stories and legends, and they can even cast some spells they picked up along the way. You don't need rules that specifically say "You have to use this skill to sing well enough to buff your companions". Just roleplay that you have that restriction, and sing while you cast. Voluntarily restrict your spells to resemble the Bard spell list and bard musical abilities.

Just like you don't have to have Death Attack to be an assassin (aka, kill people for money), you don't have to have Bardic Music to be a bard. When using the generic classes, its not about trying to replicate the specific ones, as that defeats the point of using the generics. The idea is that you take them as fundamental building blocks. Combat ability, Skills ability, Magic ability, and mix and match to build something that comes close to your character concept. No, you will likely never get it exactly correct, but the point is that you just need to get in the ballpark, and fill in the gaps with roleplaying.

Do you think Vol will team up with Nerull or Vecna?
JulesCARV

05-05-07, 02:27 AM
I really do think that bardic music is the sine qua non of the bard. If you're just going to be a skilled/light spellcaster multiclass, and roleplay it as being a bard, you can, but you can also do it as a single class generic warrior, expert, or spellcaster with perform and knowledge (history) as two of your four, six, or twelve selected in-class skills.

The bard incidentally has modest combat ability, good skills, and some spellcasting, because bardic music and bardic knowledge aren't enough to be the sole features of the class, but to say that a skilled/spellcaster character can be a bard if only roleplayed right is to miss the point.

If you want to be a bard in the broad sense of someone who's good with music, any class with perform in class -- including, potentially, any of the generic classes -- can duplicate a bard, not just a skillful/spellcaster multiclass, but if you want someone who does something like a D&D bard, bardic music is truly indispensible.

This is not to say that this is an inherent limitation on the generic system. UA did not present any way to duplicate bardic music with bonus-feat substitutes, as with sneak attack, trap sense, or smite evil. They could have, though. I'm too tired to create it now, but I think that it would be possible to create a "generic" system of bardic music, based on perform prerequisites, based on maybe 4-6 feats. This would allow an expert to be a bard with the classical "versatile minstrel" type, a spellcaster to be a bard to be a "musical enchanter" type, or even a warrior to be a bard more in line with a "warrior skaald" type image.

Everything that the Rogue can already do.No, I have seen well played bards, I've played several of them (well, not necissarily saying that they were well played because I played them, but you know what I mean).

Well I get what you are saying I personally don't see spells being equal to bardic musical abilities in feel. And in my own humble opinions there is nothing wrong with mechanics matching what you are role-playing.

For instance I want to play scout because one the skirmish ability offers different tactical options and fits with what I want to play better. Sure I could sorta do it with a Ranger/Rogue(or a skilled/warrior type) but I personally dislike multi-classing to fullfill role-playing, and it isn't exactly what I want.

Then there are the classes out there that make certain concepts much more balanced with others like Swashbucklers.

I do agree with you classes aren't needed like Samuri and Ninja. Others are too specialize like Spell Thief which is great if you are fighting a ton of living spellcasters but against non- living spellcasters or non-spellcasters a commoner would be just as useful. But overall I perfer options that cut down on the need to multiclass.

When you're right, you're right. And despite myself, you are right in this. But still... replacing Bardic Music with Spellcasting positively rips the fun out the class for me and mine.

I like the idea of generics. I think D&D should be easier and I don't think abilities should define a character, but it doesn't seem like it's as much fun to do away with the nuances and peculiarities of system.

Historical ninja were samurai, plain and simple. Everything that the Rogue can already do.No, I have seen well played bards, I've played several of them (well, not necissarily saying that they were well played because I played them, but you know what I mean).

Well I get what you are saying I personally don't see spells being equal to bardic musical abilities in feel.Thats just it, mechanics don't HAVE a feel. Flavor does.

"XdY points of Energy Damage 3 at Z feet" doesn't have a feel. Its just pure mechanics. There is nothing cool about, there is nothing to make it feel like arcane or divine, it isn't until you start adding flavor to it that it gains a "feel", and flavor can be changed.

Stinking Cloud can easily become "Zone of Orgasmic Pleasure" by simply changing the flavor from "It stinks and makes you nausious" to "It makes you overcome with pure pleasure to the point it is difficult to think about anything else". Becomes a totally differant spell, and all you did was change the roleplaying.

No you also changed the mechanic of the spell too by doing that...Taking your example....why would a creature who has a necklace of adaption be immune to pleasure?
All I am saying is adding mechanics doesn't destroy flavor. Also adding flavor though can upset the mechanics of game.

I guess I just see the two as more connected in a good way then you do. Also really the game has actualy very few fundmentals mechanics that the rest work off that they aren't really that diffitcult to get.

Also if you told me you wanted to play a bard as a rogue/wizard who has to cast spells by singing I would tell you to just play a Bard. Why? The flavor of a bard singing to cast spells is already written as flavor and a game mechanic. Why make it more complex?

A Necklace of Adaption adapts to a hostile enviroment...pheromones in the air isn't a hostile enviroment. It is actual quite natural.
Nived

05-07-07, 02:44 AM
If the levels in the air are high enough to effect you then its a poison and the necklace of adaptation will shield you from it.

Water is also 'quite natural' but the necklace keeps you from breathing it in, poison spores from a fungus are also 'quite natural' but you are protected from it.

Anything in exceedingly high doeses will kill you.

Ooh. here's one (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=12318006&postcount=32) that I seriously proposed in earnest that should irritate Edymnion: an orc Gatekeeper whose reverence for Vvaraak leads him to undergo physical emulation of the dragon:

JulesCARV

Another potential Edymnion-irritation idea -- a bit of a hoary old chestnut that most have probably seen before, but hopefull still has irritation potential.

1. During downtime, have your level 17+ psion, wizard, sorcerer, and/or cleric characters fight each other to the death.

2. Insist that, because these are CR 17+ encounters vs. ECL 17+ characters, the victorious characters get 5,100 XP (at least), as per DMG 38.

3. If the party includes a psion who knows Psionic Revivify, bring the losing person back for 200 xp, the party coming out at least 4,900 xp ahead (so long as the psion is occassionally the victor in these fights to the death). If not, use wish or reality revision to get 25,000 gp worth of daimonds, then have a cleric cast True Resurrection, which at least leaves the victorious sorcerer, psion, or wizard ahead by at least 100 xp (5,000 xp go to the wish or reality revision, the rest being surplus).

Of course, some might argue that Planar Shepherds with free wishes (or CDiv web expansion Dweomerkeepers with supernatural spells like wish) make some of this obsolete, since you can improve the cheesiness and efficiency by getting rid of the XP component for wishing for diamonds.

But honestly, the "I'm looking for players" threads on the Eberron boards do tick me off, especially when people actually ANSWER them. Folks, do *NOT* say you're interested in playing in a game that was advertised that way. The boards are layed out the way they are for a reason. Encourage people to use the proper boards (the gamer's classified boards). Do not encourage them to break the rules and flood the forums here with that sort of thread. And yes, every time somebody sees one of those threads get bites, it just reinforces the idea that its okay, and that its a good way to find players.

I got something real for you now. I'm currently grouped with an ogre. The party consists of 3rd level players.

Take this time to look up the ogre's entry. Go ahead, I'll wait.

Ok. Now he's a 1st level barbarian, and the player offered a "great" idea: the ECL of a character is determined by adding hit dice and level adjustment. Therefore, if you remove the hit dice, you only need to add the level adjustment! Of course, you keep all the stat bonuses, large size, and cool ogre abilities. Since the LA's +2, an ogre Barbarian 1 with no racial hit dice would have an ECL of 3!

I forget what the race was but it was something from the plane of shadow and had Hide In Plane Sight, semi-permanent concealment at will, and like a +10 racial bonus to hide checks. Here are some new weapons I just thought up.
1) The Blade of Eberron- This is a 20 foot long sword usable by any medium or larger creature. Once per round this sword can summon Eberron the dragon to fight for you. Stats for Eberron will be posted later. The Blade of Eberron does 8d12 dmg and is considered a +25 weapon that bypasses all damage reductions.

2) The Khyber Slicer- The Khyber Slicer is a +20 vorpral scythe(3d6 dmg) that crits on a 12, thus activating the vorpral ability. On a critical hit the slicer summons Khyber to consume the victim.

3)Siberys hammer- never mind with the stats on a sucessful hit the opponent dies with no save.

Are these weapons broken?

(and no, I'm not explaining that if you don't get it)

Blargh. The only thing I could think of that you'd be referencing would be anime elves, who tend to have ears that stick WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY out to the sides of their faces, but... no. no idea what you really mean.

...
MAYBE THEY HAVE HANDLEBAR EARS >:O

I wonder if an elan Gatekeeper druid would be a passable Edymnion-irritator.

I actualy stole the idea from that thread. These weapons reflect my feelings of the afore mentioned post.

What about a Daelkyr halfblood druid with the gatekeeper initiate feat.

I have an idea!

A group of marauding Valenar elves got lost, went too far North, and now wander through Karrnath. Because they've been wandering for soooooooooo long (30 years!), they now have these stats:

+3 Dex, +2 Int, -5 Cha: They're more agile and smarter than other elves, but more grumpy from being lost. Also, since 2+3=5, I think the bonuses cancel out the penalties.

I never liked how they detected secret doors. Now they can use true strike at will, since Valenar elves spend their whole lives fighting.

Also, their favored class is Warblade, as this is the latest class-craze I seem to have permanently cleaved to with my undying adoration of its uber-ness, but don't worry; I'll find another fanboi fad soon enough.

It's a sword from Final Fantasy VIII often used to poke fun at said fanboys of that franchise.

The buster sword was Cloud's signature weapon in FFVII.

Ahhh so that's what the Large mercurial monkeygripped fullblade looks like....Nah, I'd peg it at nothing more than a simple greatsword. It's extreme width aside, its not actually any bigger than he is, while a claymore was often times longer than the man weilding it was tall.

Wait, I think Complete Adventurer/Scoundral covered this. Its a Broadbladed Greatsword.
