| Takasi05-05-04, 05:45 PM | Sorry, made a big deal about this earlier, but it's dragon SHARDS, not dragonmarks (I'm such a tool). Lots of other crunchy bits in this article: http://pc.ign.com/articles/511/511293p1.html "Before we get into who's killing who, let's talk about why for a sec. The planet of Eberron has this ring of meteors around it, like Saturn, and these space rocks, called "dragon shards," fall to earth every so often and are used to fuel all this magic technology mentioned above. The rocks are infused with the magical energy that gives those elevators and flying cars their go power. As it turns out, one particularly ginourmous meteorite lands on the planet surface, the biggest magic rock anyone's ever seen. Whoever gets their grubby hands on it will have an incredible amount of power, perhaps enough to rule the world. There's a complication, of course. It doesn't fall in the most convenient of places. It falls in X'endrik, an ancient, dark continent that one of the game factions calls its home: the Shadow Elves (whom we'll get to in a bit). They've decided to guard it and poke it for a while to see what they can do with it. Meanwhile, the Alliance, the "good guys," are desperately trying to retrieve the dragon shard before the Shadow Elves unlock its true potential. " |
| stone_dog05-05-04, 05:49 PM | I KNEW IT! Oh wait... no.. |
| Singing Urgosh05-05-04, 06:15 PM | But can we really take this on 'Post Vebatim'? This is referring to the PC game version, and whilst I assume it is as closely based on the CS as possible game designers are known for taking a little poetic license when translating from paper to PC. On the flip side though...those Shadow Elves sound damn cool!! Can't wait for some more info on those mean beasts of the shadowy realms. Stay sane |

The bit about a giant dragonshard dropping to earth is probably specific to the computer game. It will be interesting to see if dragonshards do anything on their own, or if they're mostly a repository of XP that artificers can suck out to power new items. The rocks are infused with the magical energy that gives those elevators and flying cars their go power. ::sigh:: Thanks a lot, IGN, for making tens of thousands of your readers think that Eberron is full of flying cars. Ah well, whatever gets people talking... |
| stone_dog05-05-04, 08:07 PM | I really do like the way this game is looking though. The way the villages are so dynamic looks like fun. |
| Takasi05-05-04, 08:36 PM | I think the "living village" concept is pretty cool too. And Johnny, this quote made me roll my eyes too: the world of Eberron is something like Atlantis filtered through Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun--a place where magic fuels technology; elevators, teleporters, flying vehicles, all powered by magic. Even though I really like that kind of stuff, I'm sure when Hellcow reads it he'll have a cow...uh, a hellcow... |
| Hellcow05-06-04, 02:47 AM | As suspected, some of this is accurate, and some of it has gone through a few games of 'telephone', like the flying cars. Since it's been said, I'll confirm that yes, there is a ring around the planet, and one of the forms of dragonshard are stones from the ring. However, there are other types of dragonshard. As for what they do, well, that will have to wait. But they aren't simply an XP repository for artificers. |

Okay, given that we now know that there are prophecies involving dragonshards, and that major prophecies seem to come from the dragons, mayhap someone in Cyre did something to a dragonshard and that's why the Mournlands were created and the dragons ended the world? Hmm? Maybe? Man, we need that "Crazy Eberron Theories" forum stone_dog is requesting. |
