| Launchpad McKwak01-22-05, 02:09 AM | I just picked up the Eberron book last week, and I wanted to clarify this combination of similar abilities. I personally think it stacks, since adamantine body takes up the armor/robes slot, and is an armor/material bonus, while a Bbn's DR is an extraordinary ability. Can the 2 DR provided by the Adamantine body feat, stack with the damage resistance from barbarian class levels? If so, those two points would come off if he was hit by an adamantine weapon, right? Also is that DR ONLY affected by adamantine, or will magic attacks affect it too? |
| Doctor X01-22-05, 02:41 AM | Uh... I don't know why you'd want an adamantine Warforged barbarian... Wouldn't the whole heavy armor thing kind of interfere with rage, fast movement, and what not? |
| Launchpad McKwak01-22-05, 03:09 AM | The heavy armor only affects the fast movement ability. Nothing seems to happen to uncanny dodge, or the rage ability. The idea is to make an adamantine barbarian warforged who takes the additional +1 DR feat every time, so if you included the 2 DR from adamantine body... 2 DR - Adamantine Body Feat 6 DR - 19th Level Barbarian 6 DR - 3,6,9,12,15,18 - the Feat which adds +1 DR from the Eberron book __ 14 DR - 2pts of which is affected by adamantine the rest stacking with itself Sure, he's horribly limited in fuctionality, but just imagine how long it would take to kill the bastard... If it doesn't stack, then 12 points. |
| Blizzard_Bobsan01-22-05, 04:55 AM | Two different kinds of DR do not stack - you simply apply the best for any given situation. Also, all spells, spell-like abilities and energy attacks ignore DR - the relevant info is in the DMG, page 291. |
| Doctor X01-22-05, 05:36 AM | Yeah, Blizzard is right. DR is applied only against normal attacks (Melee or ranged). When you see the word "Magic" after the slash in a DR entry, it means that magically enhanced weapons will pierce it (+1 swords and so on), and really has nothing to do with spells... so don't let that confuse you. No DR has any effect on magic spells... not even the ones with only a "-" after the slash. One thing you have to remember is that spells and spell-like abilities already have Spell Resistance and Resistance to Energy to deal with, so it's quite fair that they can bypass normal damage reduction. After all... why should adamantine plating make a Shocking Grasp hurt any less? |
| Gurv01-22-05, 07:33 AM | Right. In any case where you have multiple damage reduction, the thing to do is to decide which ones apply against a particular attack. Of those which do apply, you use the highest value. For example: say you have DR 1/- (as a barbarian), DR 2/adamantine (per armor), and DR 5/magic (from a spell). If you are attacked with an unenchanted sword, all of the DR applies, so you get the highest value and subtract 5 from the damage taken. An enchanted steel sword would bypass the DR 5/magic, but not the other two so you use the 2/adamantine. An enchanted adamantine sword bypasses both DR 5/magic and 2/adamantine so you are left with the 1/- which can be beaten only by spells and energy attacks. |
| Edymnion01-22-05, 04:00 PM | Of course, that shouldn't stop you from taking the feat if it's in character. I myself am playing an Adm Body Warforged Barbarian 1/Fighter X. Sure, he loses out on his fast movement, but it doesn't matter, I wanted the Rage ability for in character reasons (I'll take a few Extra Rage feats later on to keep it up), and stay in Fighter for the rest of them, taking Improved DR every now and again. |
| Just another user01-22-05, 08:06 PM | Unless I missing something the feat give DR/adamantine so it stack with the DR from Adamantine body. It even specifically say that it increase it. |
| MarkB01-22-05, 08:38 PM | Unless I missing something the feat give DR/adamantine so it stack with the DR from Adamantine body. It even specifically say that it increase it. That's not the issue. The question was whether the DR from the Adamantine Body feat stacks with the Barbarian's Damage Reduction class feature (it doesn't). Nobody's claiming that the Improved Damage Reduction feat doesn't stack with Adamantine Body. |
| Edymnion01-22-05, 09:59 PM | Yup. DR never stacks, no matter what the source. |
| nick01200001-23-05, 12:04 AM | Actually, the feat reads "You gain DR 1/adamantine or increase your existing DR by 1". So a Barb with DR X/- can take it to make his DR X+1/-. And Edymnion, it doesn't stack unless the source says otherwise. Like adamantine armor for fleshies. |
