| Emperorwes08-23-04, 03:24 PM | Hmmm… well since some of you can read critically this response may be worth the trouble. Below is the off the cuff response to an email that was received. It is edited to a certain extent so to no bore you information that beyond the scope of such discussion. for details see a post titled: http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=297432 A scathing critique. In that post your Emperor is the one who tricked him. The Campaign they shall play is to be moved to this new world. It shall be titled… in defense of Eberron. Many of you know that your Emperor has been a world builder DM for as long as memory serves. He has strived to bring original concepts and new ideas into worlds for many years. The trouble is can we call many things truly original? Most things have been done. [[edited so not to waste your time.]] Creating a world with dynamic interaction and ample room for change and the unexpected is a formidable task. The existing campaign worlds are spent concepts bogged down with way too much information, or far under-supported and discontinued. Al Qadim won almost every laud and honor that RPG’s can win and in was thrown to the way side for being too specific. It told you how to role-play and did not allow for hack and slash. Dark Sun was broke from the start and the band aids just did not sit with the power gamers who were their core audience. It was doomed (even though the revised box set was pretty darn good.) Greyhawk is fun, but now with the living campaign there is just far too much data to process. Eberron is different. It is the quintessential D&D world. Think on how a world with magic would evolve. Of course it would blend with technology. It may be likened to our own views of paper and pencil. We can accomplish a lot with computation, art, design and data storage. But look at some of the techo wizards out there who do not use paper anymore. It is a part of their existence to use this magic machine, which indecently can not be explained rationally how it works, and they have done away with writing long hand. There are some who still write longhand, but that is disappearing. Everything that is possible in the D&D concept can happen here. There is a unique story line with boundless possibilities. Does it draw from other concepts, most certainly, but it is how it does it that is unique. There is concession that the artwork and promotion for this setting has been to appeal to a least common denominator some may even say that it is adolescent. However, there are mature and complex themes to Eberron Campaign that will be lost to all but the most interested. The play of the house power structure with in governed lands is intriguing. The fact that one can travel across the continent with little trouble allows for wilderness and city environs with out all the usual logistical problems. Lets not forget that for some their may be moral dilemmas with this technology, after all it uses forced servitude to make things work. Lest we forget that the grand scope of marvels may be limited to this continent and that world travel is still dangerous. PS… Thank you Galan for actually reading the post and Mark for trying to help. The mistake in the last post was that perhaps too much was assumed about the community. As far as assumptions that are made, just because a screen name is new does not mean the poster is new. If I were a first time post person and new to the game possibly the community think of what your responses would mean! Our beloved game will die if we do not change our attitudes to new people, and we should always respond in the positive. As far as my nickname goes… one would think that “role-players” would see the plays being made in such responses. Truly it is regrettable that one can not think such things. |
