Maybe there has been a thread of this nature before. I cannot check now because search is down.

Anyway, I'd just like to take the opportunity the thank Hellcow, not just for a great setting, but for his seemingly tireless dedication to interacting with us.

Moreover, Hellcow has the rare ability to take all kinds of feedback seriously w/o getting defensive, etc...

It is clear to me that Hellcow is dedicated to the players of Eberron.

Thanks Hellcow! :D

I was truely amazed with the staff support and the fact that keith himself has participated on this message board so frequently. It truely has helped with their insights, positive attitute toward constructive criticism, and acceptance of new ideas. It has definately given me a "warm fuzzy" feeling about the future of this campaign setting.
Thanks WoTC.

I support this "lovefest". The settingis amazing. I know we have a thread on this very forum where a few of have the nerve to articulate our dislikes of Eberron. But, it was a challenge for me to think of any thing with any real substance that I disagreed with. And, as noted above, Hellcow made a response to our comments - helping us understand this fantastic setting. So, props to him.

And let's not forget James Wyatt and Bill Salvicsek. I, and the guys and gals I play Eberron with, absolutely loved Wyatt's Queen with Burning Eyes in Dungeon 113.

Great job. :)

I just hope Keith gets all his deadlines met. While it is great for him to be doing such a wonderful thing for us it be a shame if he got in trouble for being so kind.

WoTC Doog and Sith have also been good to us. We shouldn't forget them.

And Ellen Baker has been supportive of us as well. Least of all let us not forget her, and her own participation on the boards and chats.

I must wholeheartedly concur here. Not only that but he'll give you HIS feedback to your feedback in a thoughtful, non-offensive manner (even if in the end it comes to, "Well, we agree to disagree on this matter.") With no feelings hurt, and IMO, a sense of sincere appreciation from Hellcow on your take of the game; actually respecting your opinion!!!!

Indeed, much appreciation Hellcow.

Indeed, to lone DMs out there, Hellcow feels like a true collaborator on their personal game. His personal ideas may be non-canon if not in a book, but they're usually pretty darn nifty ideas. Thanks for Eberron, Keith! And kudos to you and your lovely wife (And all the others involved with the book) for the awesome support. Very much appreciated. :D

You, great sir Hellcow, are one of the most friendly people I've met online. You have time and time again proved that you can remain calm andn rational before the great masses of ignorant people who hate you for no other reason than that you designed Eberron. :cloud9:
And you remain modest in front of such prasise too.
You are truly enlightened :king:

Hi folks,
This is my first post on the D&D boards, although I've been a lurker here for about a fortnight. I saw this thread and couldn't resist adding my praise.

I played a little AD&D about seven years ago, but couldn't really get into it - irregular games, rotating group, and I didn't have a rulebook; then I moved away from that group and didn't think about it.
I got a part-time job in a comic store earlier this year, and got talking with a customer, who invited me to fill a vacancy in his group. So I started learning D&D3.5, which I found to be pretty easy to get into. I bought a Player's Handbook just to help myself along, and thought no more of it, content to be just a player. Then we got a totally new book in stock, which I started to idly flip through. After about five minutes I was convinced that I absolutely had to buy it, and that book has made me pick up the other two core rulebooks, the Draconomicon, the Expanded Psionics Handbook, an adventure, numerous copies of Dragon and Dungeon magazines, and a couple of other bits besides.

The book in question?
The Eberron Campaign Setting.

I'm a big fan of the pulp era, and in particular of Robert E. Howard's work - not to mention classic radio and cinema serials like The Shadow, Doc Savage, and King of the Rocket Men. And I think the way Keith has put that sort of flavour into Eberron, especially the artificiers and the 'forged; the former evoking that old pulp stereotype, the gadgeteer!
I've not been able to run a game yet but I'm really looking forward to leading my group into a new campaign setting. There's a lot I can say, in terms of waxing lyrical, tweaks I'm considering, questions, and such - but I don't want to gush.

So, thanks to Keith for his vision and his hard work (especially in that 70+ page "Ask Keith Baker" thread - it took me a week to read it!), Ellen for her support, and everyone who's contributed - Wizards staff, freelancers, and fans. I get the impression that we're all friends setting off on a new journey - and, in best Tolkienesque tradition, it's a road that goes ever, ever on...

Yep, Keith is a great guy with a creative gene unmatched. I feel his Eberron takes Dungeons & Dragons to new heights, and opens up new possibilities for the evolution of the game. It has not feelt as fun to play D&D / Fantasy Role-playing since I began over 20 years ago.
chalybeous

09-26-04, 05:37 PM
I think you hit the nail on the head, Master Arioch. Evolution of the game... lovely phrase, and perfect for what I was thinking. It's a total change in D&D!

In my opinion, there's so much material in settings like Forgotten Realms that it's enough to stagger the average newbie. Sure, it's a detail-rich world, but it's been going for long enough to get top-heavy, with epic-level NPCs all over the place, and parties who've converted their PCs several times to suit different game mechanics. I'm not knocking traditional D&D settings at all, but I think that the old adage is true: a change is as good as a rest, and Keith's work is certainly a breath of fresh pulp-noir air in an otherwise slightly stale high fantasy atmosphere.
(Just my opinion, folks. Your mileage may vary.)
Edymnion

09-26-04, 08:46 PM
You know, I don't think this thread can really accomplish it's goal, no matter how long it gets.

Keith, for me at least, you've completely revitalized a game that was becoming stale. Perhaps the best praise I can give is that I fully expect Eberron to stand amongst the giants of Greyhawk and the Forgotten Realms, and to do so under it's own worth.

Years from now, when my kids are playing this setting, I'm going to be proud to say I got to talk with you right from the beginning. :)

I ashamed to say i've been avoiding this post in fear of not knowing how I could express my praise....

Thank you, for such a wonderful and fresh campaign setting.

Thank you, for a race that is most contraversial and unique.

Thank you, for replying to my posts

Thank you, for taking time out of your busy schedual to answer our many questions, for sharing your insight, stating your views and opinions, for helping flesh out this newborn setting, but most of all....

Thank you, father of Eberron, for giving us something we can enjoy for years to come, thank you....

I just wanted to thank all of you for your support of Eberon. Some days it does get frustrating; there's only so many hours in the day, and it's hard to answer all the questions I want to answer and still get work done. And obvously I wish we could get you information more quickly -- I wish the Sharn book was coming out tomorrow instead of February! But as frustrating as it can be, things like this thread are always a bright spot in the day.

So thank you!

I'm glad to hear that other people are as excited about my "dork-orgy" as I am. Thank you very much, Hellcow, for bringing Eberron into the world. Definitely a better world than I expected Ninjor to be, the world of ninjas.

D&D has been feeling a bit stale around the ages for a good five or more years now. Forgotten Realms was a fresh setting back in 1992 but it's gotten overblown and undercontrolled.

In a way, Eberron is the new Realms. Relatively few tings have been written about it and it's got a vibe all its own. The thing I like best about it is that its flavor relates to things that everyone can enjoy and that makes D&D more accessible to everyone, not just fantasy buffs.

Eberron may very well have saved D&D from slow extinction. Thanks for saving the game, man.
D.F.

09-28-04, 05:51 AM
This may seem redundant, but Thank you very much, Hellcow. First of all, thanks for the setting, that is absolutely awesome (with the whole Inspired-Kalashtar-dual nature-Dal Quor thing you made me like Psions, I always hated them :D. The secret, like with the Lighting Rail, Warforged, Dead-worshippers elves and gnomes-you-don't-want-to-mess-with was to have a very rational, cool  , and elegant answer for all those issues). But, more than everything, thanks for the time spent on the boards, because it is mainly thanks to your explanation and answers that I understood the real feeling of the setting and I am now a proud owner of it! :king:

EDIT: Oh, and one last thing... One of the things I appreciate most is the fact that DM's are free to use their creativity in Eberron, as metaplot is low and the relatively low level PC's can be the heroes. I know it doesn't depend on you, but I'd really like things t remain like that  ;)

Definitely a better world than I expected Ninjor to be, the world of ninjas.

Didn't they make a game like that already, and it was called Ninja Giden or something? Oh well...

I agree with the rejevenating Dnd comments. Even people who don't want to play Eberron in my gaming groups want the magical items from Eberron and some of the elements.

Hopefully my plancescaping DM will let our Cleric have earth elemental Bound armor. And I the conjurer shall have an eldtrich machine with +4 levels to summoning spells, that is horribly oversized and uncarriable. Perhaps the economy model? Perhaps not...

Thanks again for your all the effort you put in your spare time here.

And the Lady MacBaker - She Who Accumulates Nicknames Daily - is as nice in person, too!

Say, I wonder if the Bakers are coming to Dorkfest VII...

But seriously, back to topic, I think Keith knows how most of us feel about the setting. I've traversed many a message board, far and wide, and never have I seen so many admissions of "I had grown tired of XXX (insert D&D) until XXX (insert Eberron) lit that spark again..."

Even the critics that try to hate it are forced to admit, through their strangled spite, that Eberron has some fantastic ideas.

For years we've wanted D&D to make sense ... and for me, this is Eberron's greatest achievement and strength. Everything has a reason for being. Aberrations are now more than just "Well, we don't know WHAT it is - let's call it an aberration!" Goblins are filthy, downtrodden creatures - why? Eberron not only explains, but gives them a sensible, nearly noble origin.

Eberron, simply put, is D&D for the joy of D&D.

The latest Dragonshards article is a great example. Keith throws down the fluff of legends - name dropping places casually as if the reader has heard rumors of them before (Crystal Bridge, Fallen), making us jones for more - and doing so with the smooth narration of a tourguide's flashing feather quill. Wonderful fluff. The Sharn sourcebook can't come out soon enough!

So yes, he's heard it before - thanks!

I don't much like being a total suck, but yeah, thanks Keith; its great to be able to clarify stuff with you on these boards.

What I really, really like is that you don't answer rules questions, which really sets the tone of this board. I surely don't care about the mathematical permutations of ECS rules, but setting info is great, so thanks for being the example for the rest of us to run with.

If I had to sift through ten zillion "does alter self stack with changeling +10" threads just to get to the meat, I think I'd give up.

Its also good to have a game designer doing something significant and new with gnomes too. Its about time!

So yeah, thanks.

Hey Hellcow and Honeycakes,

Here's adding my thanks to the list.

The first time my fiance came home and found that Keith had answered to one of his posts, he rushed me to his computer screen and was so happy. Another time when Keith agreed with one of his posts about wiether a monk's fists are considered a natural attack or not, he seemed to glow. Because you two do something specail. Keith- the creator of the world my fiance loves to set *all* his games in, answered his questions on his own spare time.

Thanks Keith.

And Ellen, before I knew alot about you or Keith I had made a comment to my fiance once that went something like, "He wrote a sourcebook for D&D, most likely plays D&D on the weekend, works for the company that makes D&D and is just as active on those forums as you are... I feel sorry for his wife... if he has one. She *has* got to be sick of D&D" My fiance turned and said, "Yea, his wife posts in the forums too." After that I found the link to your diary you post and I loved it. I figured if you could put up with that much D&D every day, I would try, and joined the forums myself. I'm glad I joined. Keep posting in both your blog and in the forums. Hope you don't pick up too many more nicknames.

You both are the best,
Sincerely,
Lady Celiwyn Alondra

Happy Holidays, Keith! I have nowhere else to say this but here so here goes.

Thanks for the Gnomes of Zilargo Dragonshards! Evidently, as you said, you took the content of "Reconstructing the Races of Khorvaire" to heart because you not only made Zil gnomes sensible RP extensions of their mechanically set core bonuses, you also did the same for the Dwarves of the Mror Holds as well! Too often, (as in FR and GH), we get races with bonuses out the wazoo for no discernable reasons and with almost no impact on their place or identity as a race and on specific NPCs as an individual.

I especially liked the entry on some gnomish flavors being available only through prestidigitation, the comment on their fastidious natures and also the gnomish special instrument.

Kudos on the work so far Keith. Eberron CS is not the pinnacle of your career. We have faith in you. The best is yet to come!

Go Kieth!!!!!, Eberron is by far the best thing to happen to D&D since Dark Sun and Kieth is the best thing since Monte Cook its about time D&D started moving away from traditional fantasy.

ECS and Sharn are great, but what really does it for me are the Bossy the Cow Strips. This one's my fav: http://www.bossythecow.com/bossycomic6.htm
My favorite part of Eberron isn't that Keith managed to make the races make sense, but that he made the COOL.
Half-Elves, a race many gamers justifiably shun, are sky-pirates!
Gnomes are cold-blooded killers!
Dwarves are greedy little money-mongers!
Orcs, those ever-present cliched ruffians, are tree-huggers! Violent tree-huggers that kick ass!
Bards, the butt of EVERY joke, summon an echos of the music of creation to empower allies and serve as researchers into forgotten lore!
Halflings ride dinosaurs!
Seriously, Keith, all I had to mention was dinosaurs and halflings in the same sentence and my group was on board.
Can't wait to see what else worms its way out of that noggin.
Happy New Year

As always, thanks to everyone for their kind words. CrazySamaritan, I certainly enjoyed the present, and PoeticJustice, I'm glad to hear you're reading the Bossy cartoons. We've had a slight hold-up in production due to holiday madness, but you'll certainly be seeing more to come in the new year!

Happy holidays, everyone!

BTW Hellcow: That strip inspired me to make my last character a half-elf bard. Unfortunately he took a nasty spill off a Lyrandar Skyship after it was attacked by Glidewing-mounted Halflings. The DM ruled that in order to make cast Feather fall I had to make a concentration check to prevent going unconscious and botching the spell. I protested (feather fall's a free action, right?), and he relented, making the DC 5.
I rolled a natural 1.

Merry Christmas (belated)!

I was very disappointed when Santa didn't bring me my own life-sized Warforged for Christmas, it was the only thing I asked for (other than that eternal wand of prestidigitation)! :D

Just about to settle into Christmas Eve with my family... but I thought I'd take a few moments to say:

Hellcow, much thanks for the setting; Honeycakes, much thanks for keeping him just inside the border of sanity, at least enough to be able to write coherently.

The rest of you—Joyous Yuletide, one and all!

Lol, this is a very old thread...

I read through the first page, and through the whole Sharn sourcebook messup and was like "Wtf, they're making ANOTHER one?" Then I read the date...

Anyways, Merry X-mas to everyone here, and thank you Hellcow and all of the other designers for providing such a rich and deep setting for us Eberron fanatics to game in!

Happy Holidays, Hellcow and Honeycakes!

(sorry, just had to make that alliteration once!)

Thanks for your great work; like Edy, you revitalized a game that was losing its luster for me. :)

Eberron is the best thing ever produced by Wizards! And while Keith is quick to say that his opinions are not official for me his words are law! Long live Hellcow and may he maintain control over the shape Eberron takes!
