Interesting things has happened to the warforged in the party I GM. Apparently something was botched during construction, cause this guy has developed a second persona. Thanks to great roleplaying by Nate (the guy whose character it is) this guy has really started to get a life of his own. Here's a sample conversation between the personas, written by Nate:

Hammer they call you. Hammer! That's a joke! You're about as much a Hammer as I am a Healer.

Huh? What? Who's that? Who's there?

I'm the one they should call Hammer. I'm the one who's done all the dirty work when you get too scared and run away behind me. I'm the one who has to clean up the mess you've made.

And then you go and take the credit for it. They see you as some sort of protector, they think you're the one to use to slay the enemy.

I... I... I don't want to do it, but once they attack I just lose it. I don't want to do it, I beg them not to but they do. I... I... just want to make things for people, and fix this construct dog, it's not fair what happened to it, it was jsut doing what it was told to do, and I destroyed it.

Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!

You!?! You believe you destroyed that metal mogrel. Don't be so foolish. You were ready to run away before that thing even bared it's teeth. It was me who took care of business.

It's been me all along.

They'll find out you know, they'll find out what a coward you really are.

...learn than you aren't really their 'Hammer'

They know I don't like hurting people, they know I'm good they won't reject me.

We'll see.

Well, if you're going to be known as Hammer, I'd better be known as Onslaught.

See you soon kid.

There is apparently more to come of what this twisted character has to offer.

Wow...that is just amazing. Seriously, tell your player that this is an amazing character that I hope to see more off. Who knows where this might lead. I see so much potential in this, and I hope you keep us updated.

Multiple Personality Disorder.

Schizophrenia is interpreting senses that aren't real. Such as seeing people that aren't there, hearing noises where there are none, etc. etc.

Good thing that guy doesn't own a docent component and an intelligent weapon, then he really would start to feel crowded in his head.

Good luck to anyone who tries to use mindreading magic on him though.

Hammer sat in a quiet part of the forge with his repai kit and tool layed out in front of him on the table. He propped up a mirror to see the dent in the side of his head.

What are we doing now?

I'm going to fix this damage. That's when it all started. When I took the mace to the head. That's when YOU showed up. Soon I'll be free from you.

Heh heh heh. That's what you believe now. Damn are you pathetic. I've been here for as long as you have. Has it not occured to you that I am meant to have control, and it is that dent which created you???

Think about it boy, The Warforged were created for war, and you, you don't even have the stomach to protect yourself in a fight. You just run behind me.

I think it's YOU who is the trespasser here. So go ahead kill yourself, I'm sure we'll all have a lot more fun without you.

I.... I... no. It's you! You're not meant to be here.

Are you so sure? Go on then. Let's get to work. Let's see who make it through.

No... no... it's you, it has to be you.... But....

That's what I thought, you can't even take that risk can you? You coward.

With that Hammer put down his tools. Left the room and tried to find something to do.... Anything to keep the voice of Onslaught quiet....

:lightbulb Stop it! You're giving me ideas...

I must commend BigNed on this character. It is quite amusing watching him sit there having conversations with himself.
Sometimes when he comes to after a blackout he tends to find himself wearing bits and pieces of the enemy. Very amusing.

Okay, this is just a twisted idea, but what if this guy has some sort of built in Circlet of Preservation that has been malfuntioning. Both personalities still exist, but the magic item can't cope with it, and has sort of overloaded. This roleplaying is excellent and farther down the road should be rewarded.

Just a thought...

Watch them

Watch who? My friends?

Friends you call them? They would destroy you if they began to suspect anything

And why should I believe you? Why would you be helpful all of a sudden?

You really are an idiot aren't you, Hammer? I occupy this body too you DO realise. If they destroy you, then I die as well. And I'm not prepared to pay that price to get rid of you. No, not yet... I have too much to do.

Watch them... Or I'll have to deal with them.

Yes, I do give him extra xp for this roleplaying. Having characters like him around also, I've learnt, encourages the other players to roleplay more.
Other than him we also have one highly amusing goblin rogue/swashbuckler. Goblin Swashbuckler you ask? Yes indeed. Poor guy has aspirations towards becoming a Sharn noble. He dresses in very fancy clothes and has a HUGE plumed hat. This character is also really well played.
The other three characters in the group are not quite as developed as these two.

Multiple Personality Disorder.

Schizophrenia is interpreting senses that aren't real. Such as seeing people that aren't there, hearing noises where there are none, etc. etc.

Also hearing voices that aren't there can be a function of a schizophrenia. As it is current psychological thinking actually combines schizophrenia and MPD into one disorder.

Also as described the way the second personality behaves its more like a true schizophrenic episode than MPD. People how suffer from multiple personalities don't often have conversations with themselves, each may be aware of the others but they don't react quite like the description given. Not that it really matters to us here, that concept is just too cool not to work with.

I don't know exactly if I'd call this Schizophrenia or MPD, since there seem to be indications towards both.

While this character is perhaps rewarding to play the next couple of times, it should be obvious that the character is indeed suffering from a mental illness and with the volatility of the "other guy" it seems clear that this will have to be fixed at one point or another since the danger to the being is greatly threatened.

It does bring up a nice philosophical question: what to do when your hardware / software gets scrambled? Therapy? Surgery? Little nanites that cope with the situation? Or shall we use the most omnipotent part of any fantasy setting: Magic?

Onslaught is the violent one of the pair.

He distrusts another member of the party as he would seem to be plotting against him. Reading up on how to disable Warforgeds through magic.

Plus he wants to instill doubt into Hammer, which will strengthen his hold on dominance.

At the moment Onslaught only rears his head in conflict or other threatening situations. This may change in time.

As BigNed said, Hammer's other personality only takes the front seat whenever he is threathened. In the future, 'if' Onslaught takes more control it will be instigated by me (the GM). It gives me slightly sadistic ideas about side plots... :D

Cool
