think of it kinda like... a cross between sciencefiction and fantasy with magic instead of technology.

It's a high magic campaign world, but not high magic in the same sense as the Forgotten Realms.

It's high magic in a more utilitarian sort of way. Magical trains, floating cities, living constructs and spells and a number of other things.

It's very action orientated, or can be if you wish to play it like that, and the world is rather rediculiously fleshed out. It's honestly a lot of fun if you can get a good group together and any type of setting you enjoy playing in probably has a home in the world of Eberron.

Hmm. It's basically D&D with advances in magic.

There are no firearms.

Most of the advancements are advancements in crafting so magical items are more pervasive and accessable. For example, a city watchman may have a lantern with a continual flame rather than an oil lantern. Some of the trademark magic items (Lightning Rails, Elemental Airships, etc) are present, but they are more scenery than accessable items to most PCs. They are colorful ways to get from point a to point b, not something PCs buy to cruise from town to town in.

I think a succinct description is:
Where D&D is magic patched onto a romanticized medieval setting, Eberron is magic integrated into the setting.

Eberron is like the Hunter S. Thompson version rather than the Tolkien, it's more Gumshoes & Golems than Dungeons & Dragons, it's a bit more City of Lost Angels than Old World Charm, drop a couple tabs, take three steps to the right of surreal and get comfy, Alice, it's gonna be a long ride.

I don't think any world can constantly be at that level of insanity. I was watching Apocalypto recently, and when Jaguar Paw's tribe enters the Atzec city, it is a maelstrom of people, slave markets, deformed midgets, screaming murderous priests. I said to my GF, "you know, I don't think any society could constantly be THIS insane."

Why not? New York is like that on most weekdays. ;)

Eberron is more designed to pick up the Pulp genre, rather than the Tolkein style fantasy. This seems like a nod to Larry Niven's inversion of Arthur C. Clarkes's third law of prediction. Niven's version was: "Any sufficiently advanced magic is indistinguishable from technology."

Eberron gets past the overly self-conscious limitations that too many writers feel obligated to impose on "Medieval" fantasy worlds that are loaded with magic yet oddly primitive. Eberron may have fewer epic wizards than Oerth, Krynn or Toril. But it's proportion of magic-users amongst the population tops all three worlds.

Thus you can have fantastic fantasy locations littered with magic (like Sharn) without excluding low-level PC's from it or making them into ants.

Eberron is a world where one day someone thought "hey, why we don't use all this magic to light the streets, send messsages, improve travel and generally make life easier rather than just throw fireballs around?"

Eberron is a world where killing a goblin, a medusa, or any intelligent "monster" could send you in jail.

Eberron is a world where noble and kings can be low level aristocrats/experts and not need to be high level wizards or fighters.

Eberron is a world where death is a really bad thing, not just something that slow you down a little.

Eberron is a world where you could credibly play both an atheist and a very religious person and nobody (maybe not even the GM) would know who is right.
