I've talked to my DM about trying other settings besides Greyhawk and Faerun, from Eberron to Dark Sun, Spelljammer and Iron Kingdoms, even non-D&D products like Shadowrun or Battletech. He's open to it and I've offered to DM it but my pitch right now is very weak. I don't want my players taking this as a sign of disgust with the current system (I have my gripes with standard 3.5e :embarrass) and I wanted to get them involved in a more thoughtful setting that isn't dominated by epic level NPCs or interventionist gods. So I settled on Eberron as it has a wealth of detail and character that doesn't feel like a stifling straight jacket, to me as both a DM and a player. The other problem is when we do bring out the generic D&D settings it's always generic character archetypes that follow us with little to no attention paid to the setting. 'I'm a barbarian from the north! Rar!' as we like to say around here.

Now for my group. Lemme inform you on them.

My group has, as far as I know, only played High Fantasy role playing games with some Scifi on the side. Most of them are older gamers hailing back from during early second edition and our regular DM still has his first edition books. :P Out of our players 2/3s of us are in our thirties or older ( I'm in my twenties ) and we have two college freshmen young'uns with the same disposition of high fantasy and unfamiliarity. I've attributed their lackluster efforts and roleplaying more to treating it like a beer and pretzel's game to be won with your buddies rather then a real engaging experience.

So how would you go about getting them or your own group into Eberron?

Place them down in Stormreach. Xendrik is fairly non-descript beyond jungle, ruins, and monsters. The town's eccentric make-up would welcome oddballs such as your PCs. And by welcome, I mean wait a few hours before mugging/killing/pressganging them. :P

Kicking around somewhere on the boards is an 'Introduction to Eberron' powerpoint. That's a good start and doesn't require players to read too much.

And I know the pictures helped my group :P
