I need some help working out some details for a starter adventure I am going to be running for a group of 5 people whom I've never played with before (ie. I don't know what to expect from them).

The adventure I have planned is loosely based off of the Expeditionary Dispatch: Sharn Citydark (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ebed/20061106a) story but with modifications considering the situation (ie. its my campaign, they're 1st level, etc). The part I need help with with is the investigation that will eventually lead to the exploration of the tunnel system where the captured Cyrans (Cyre-ians?) are.

They are initially sent on this investigation by a Cleric of the Sovereign Host whose husband was kidnapped. She explains he is only one of the most recent of the kiddnapped cyrans and she asks the party to find them. All she knows is that it started about two months ago and the initial disappearances were in the Cogs and Lower Dura (although since then it has spread) and they were all Cyrans.

I have a few ways that players can lead to the next point in the adventure but I know I am probably missing a few things. So the question is: What would YOU do next in that situation? (assume that you have a standard party with all the basics covered and people with sufficient points in a variety of skills).

Recap of what you/they know at this point:
- Earlier that day, a Cyran was assaulted by two warforged who seemed to be trying to capture him. (this is what led to the adventure)
- The Sharn Watch doesn't seem to be doing anything or care.
- All the victims are Cyrans.
- The disappearances started two months ago.
- Most of the disappearances were in the Cogs or Lower Dura but have since spread.

Send the PCs to the Cyran refugee ward in Sharn, so they can start asking questions to see if anyone knows anything about the victims, or has heard rumors, etc.

A homeless woman (or a goblin) saw (Your perpetrator) carrying one of the victims in the General Direction of the well.

A blood trail leads somewhere.

Offer some clue as to what is so special about two months ago (Excavations, stars grew into a specific alignment, etc).

The PCs, in the course of their investigation, find someone who ESCAPED their captors (Perhaps from the well itself, or just as they're about to be dragged down).

Thanks for the advice (I might use some of it) but it really didn't answer my question:

Given the information you had, what would you (the player) do next? I am trying to get an idea since I generally don't run investigation type adventures and I want to be ready for any possible paths my PCs might try and follow.

As someone who has run mysteries (and games in general), you can only be prepared for so much. Soemtimes the PCs will run in the EXACT OPPOSITE direction that you expect.
