Hey. Enthusiastic Eberron Newbie here, though long time RPGamer.

Quick question: Is Eberron a ringed planet (like Saturn)? Haven't read the whole thing yet, but this caught my eye:

"In the end, Siberys became the glowing ring that surrounds the world[...]"
- From the History of Eberron, p.224

Is that simply a colorful way to describe the sky, or is it an actual ring?

Yep it's a ring like Saturn, and every now and then bits fall to Eberron. People seem to like collecting them, something about being able to harness magic or some other gobly-gook.

Not only is it ringed but it also has 12 (13 some say) moons!

man, Earth sucks compared to Eberron... ;)

Eberron, be blingin', yo :P

It would be quite a sight from "space"...

I hope they'll do an illustration of the planet from that perspective: showing the ring, some of the moons and the continents seen from space. That would be something!

Alright, I have made it my almost impossible mission to construct the world of Eberron with Celestia. It may take some time...

Good luck with that Mr. Eater of Trolls. :w00t: Since I've got no way to make 3dModels for it I can't do a thing with it. My long term plan was to use GIS to build a digital map of Eberron's surface. That's a year or more away and probably even more impossible than making Eberron for Celestia.

I have a reasonable 3D modelling program I can use, and I have all the statistics for the moons I need. I'll assume Eberron is the same size as Earth, and I'll use the map from the inside cover of the ECS. I'll have to assume Eberron is the same distance from its sun as Earth is from Sol too.
Now to learn how to use Celestia...

Well, maybe you can load your digital model into arcscene or arcglobe.

It shouldn't be impossible to get Eberron into a GIS. It would just take some time digitizing the map, assigning it a faux coordinate system and determining surface attributes. Timeconsuming, yes. Impossible, nah....

Actually, while it looks cool, such a planet as Eberron simply could not support life in the real universe. Our single big moon acts as a counterweight to Earth's wobble, keeping the planet from radically changing it's tilt every time it feels like it. That single big moon alone is probably one of the key things that keeps life on Earth possible.

And rings, while cool, are unstable. You cannot have a ringed planet permanently, it all falls to the planet's surface sooner or later. While its good that he has it where Syberis Dragonshards fall from it, you gotta realize that an actual ringed planet, with a solid surface, would have a permanent dead zone under the ring, circling the entire globe. The surface would always be ripped apart, volcanoes, it would literally be hell on Earth if we had a ring.

I dunno I think multi Moons are also capable of supporting life, its hard to say exactly what can/can't happen cause we really dont understand teh universe well enough to know. I mean I'm sure humans would be able to surive on such a world, would manly be meat eating cause sessions could be messed up, but other than that *shrugs*

We have blind fish, and plant life that feed off of geothermal vents, that are higher in temp than boiling water. And we have plants living in liquid Methan on the ocean floor. So im sure life can change to suit the enviroment.

Multimoons also have the potential to acts as shepard moons for the ring (i believe saturn has these) in that thier orbits and gravity keep the belt relatively (key word there) tight and stable. This would reduce the amount of falling debris greatly from a constant shower of shards creating a dead zone, to an occasional sprinkle hear and there in between passes of the shepard moons.

Whether a ringed or multi-moon planet can have life on the surface is something that seems unlikely to the point of calling it impossible. Even if one did manage to have life on it, it would be even more unlikely that it would have life like ours.

There is a higher possibility that the moons of a multi-moon system could support life more agreeable to terran-life. A ring system again drops this chance significantly. Any planet near a ring would have to deal with an almost constant barrage of meteors...and would have a much higher rate of "big ones" blowing up entire ecosystems. A dangerous world to live on, even assuming it lasted long enough to for the life on it to be able to philosophize about it.

Obviously, Eberron has its magic to keep things working. Then again, there is also the question of whether the moons are really the kind of moons we have in the real universe. I am of the opinion that they are really metaphysical representations of the planes, which are in turn really metaphysical representation of something greater. All of which makes up the greater reality we call the multiverse…but that is only my theory.

could Eberron be one of the Moon's and the people of the planet just believe they are the center of things?

they could still get the effects of the rings if they were close enough to them and the core planet would just look like some sort of huge moon to them

and in the illustration linked above, the "moon" in the front of the pic looks more like a planet than the giant gray core planet.

just a thought
but obviously magic could make anything happen for them
and scientists will explain away the world until the world proves them wrong anyways

The Eberron Celestia model is going reasonably well :)
I have a star (which I've named Ebersun ;)) with orbiting Eberron including a rather dull Ring of Siberys. I've added the 12 moons too, but I'm having problems with their orbits. As of yet, I have no decent textures, but they are on their way :)
