He said that Sharn was similar to a city known as Taris in the Knights of the Old Republic video game for the X-Box gaming system. I would have to agree if it is indeed the same city that I am thinking of. The city I am thinking of had the poor people living underground with some kind of mutates that they had locked into a gated area. You also had to collect parts for some kind of bike race within the aforementioned city. Is Taris the city I am thinking of and do you see the similarity between the two ? If so, then perhaps we could use Taris(or whatever the name is.) as a template for Sharn until the Sharn: City of Towers sourcebook comes out. ~~~ |

There are very stratified living conditions in both cases; you've got the rich people in the upper city, and it gets progressively poorer and more dangerous the further down you go. I don't think that Taris is going to be destroyed by the Sith any time soon, though. |

You're quite correct & I see a great many similarities between Sharn and Taris. OTOH, Taris is nearly a clone of the spired cities of the Red Men from Edgar Rice Burrough's John Carter, Warlord of Mars books, or even ERB's city of Opar from the Tarzan books. Gigantic, spired cities are yet another wonderful pulp element added to this setting. |

I don't think I want to wait until November to start my Eberron campaign. ~~~ |

Vertical cities during rainly weather would suck. Just think about all the dirty grimmy water tht drips on all the poor people from the rain that runs off walkways and building high above... glad Im not a clean freak like the aristocrate we have in the group :) Ebb2012 |
| Cantuse07-23-04, 02:19 AM | Personally I found Sharn more similar to Final Fantasy VII's major city, I can't remember the name. The poor lived on the bottom, at ground level, and the prosperous wealthy lived on a 'disc' that sat above them. Even more similar, but not as visibly apparent is Vivec from Morrowind. The canalworks and lower waistworks were inhabited by commoners, but the upper waistworks had merchants and profiteers, and the tops of the wards had guildhalls, faction strongholds, and so forth. Plus the MAJOR similarity is the floating island above it all, Skyway floats above Sharn, and the Hall of Justice (I think that's the name) floats above Vivec. |

I mentioned Vivec as well, mostly to illustrate the idea of of dwellings and shops that span many levels rather than all being built like single units off of a central hub or corridor apartment-block style. |
