| Duel_Dude10-29-05, 02:12 PM | ?? |
| KingNeo10-29-05, 02:29 PM | In a way it is like forgotten realms, but it is way, way, different. The gods actually existed in forgotten realms, physically in fact, but in eberron they may or may not exist. Alignments are all painted in gray in Eberron. Gnolls can be as easily as good as any human or elf, while an angel could be insanely evil. The world of eberron is far more "modernized" than the forgotten realms. Eberron uses magic like we use technology today, and everything is essentially based around that. There are people known as the dragonmarked, who of course possess birthmark type tattoos called dragonmarks, and these dragonmarks grant special ablities. These people are also tied to something called the dragonic prophecy. Also while the forgotten realms was based high power characters, eberron is based on low level characters. This is just a few things that seperates forgotten realms and eberron. The only thing I can really think of that makes these two campaigns seem alike is the fact that they both have an underdark, of course in eberron it is called Khyber, and that they offer a lot for PCs in creating a unique world for us to play in. |
| Tek10-29-05, 02:33 PM | FR is as much like Eberron as brussel sprouts is to chocolate. |
| The White Sorcerer10-29-05, 02:47 PM | It looks alot like it (to me). Name one similarity, apart from stuff like swords and fireballs. |
| Kinger10-29-05, 02:57 PM | Now, to be fair, there are many similarities that the original poster may have noticed that some of us take for granted. One cannot assume that everyone who posts on these boards has intricate knowledge of all things Dungeons and Dragons. WotC makes more than D&D, y'know. :) Both Eberron and Forgotten Realms are campaign settings for Dungeons and Dragons, and both are produced by Wizards of the Coast. They both come in expensive sourcebooks and are typically found on the same shelf in stores. They both utilize the "core 3" sourcebooks: Player's Handbook, Monster Manual, and Dungeon Master's Guide. Both feature the races found in the Player's Handbook (Human, Elf, Half-Elf, Half-Orc, Dwarf, Halfling, Gnome) as well as the character classes. All the above-mentioned species look much the same in the art produced for both settings (so you can't just point at one and say "That's DEFINATELY a dwarf from setting A, because he's purple with orange stripes"). Both settings involve, essentially, swords and sorcery, rather than, say, guns and cybernode hacking. Basically, both Forgotten Realms and Eberron are Dungeons & Dragons. But that's like saying a Jack Russel Terrier and a Great Dane are both dogs: True, even if each is very different from the other. |
| makeshiftwings10-29-05, 03:05 PM | ?? Ooh,.. FIVE question marks. Couldn't possibly be a troll. |
| Duel_Dude10-29-05, 03:23 PM | Ooh,.. FIVE question marks. Couldn't possibly be a troll. WHAT?!?!?! |
| Medesha10-29-05, 03:36 PM | They're exactly the same. Elminster actually grew up in Eberron. |
| Tek10-29-05, 03:57 PM | WHAT?!?!?! WHERE?!?!?! Alot of good points... Actually, you seem to be right. He apparently comes from that 'other' crowd, of 'card games'. Atleast according to his user info: The Games I Play: Magic: The Gathering, Magic Online, Duelmasters TCG |
| DoveArrow10-29-05, 03:59 PM | FR is as much like Eberron as brussel sprouts is to chocolate. I would say a more fair and apt analogy would be that Forgotten Realms is to Eberron like the Medieval Times is to the Industrial Revolution. |
| Raziel_Brokodar10-29-05, 04:00 PM | :yuck: What is the point of this thread? lol |
| Tek10-29-05, 04:04 PM | :yuck: What is the point of this thread? lol I Dub this Flamebait... And I Dub thee Troll... As for the Medieval Times / Industrial Revolution, sure, that works aswell. Mine was, they're both food, and yours is that they're both time periods in our history. Same category, totally different otherwise. |
| DoveArrow10-29-05, 04:23 PM | :yuck: What is the point of this thread? lol The same as any other thread: To waste time. :P |
| Thievingrouge10-29-05, 04:29 PM | Yeah, they are the same. Yesterday, my Shifter druid went down to visit his neighbor, the 25th level human wizard, aspect of the Traveler for a cup of sugar. Then Ritz, the dark colored warforged ranger started to mope about something. Yeah, and then the band of heroes set out to do somemeaningless job, like save the world, even though 80 other people could do it better. |
| ph0t0k10-29-05, 05:20 PM | Eberron is not just like the Realms....but it does parallel the other campaign setting, although no more than any other piece of literature parallels another. (ie most fantasy novels parallel Tolkein, most horror novels parallel King, etc). When the Realms first came out, did you think it the same as Greyhawk? There are going to be some similarities, Sharn is of course the Eberron equivilent to Waterdeep, the Mournland is the equivelent to The Plains of Purple Dust, and there are others if I wished to waste the time to think of them. What makes Eberron different are it's people, new races and the place traditional races have in the world. I'm a hardcore Realms DM and player...of Eberron all I have to say is it's nice to have a breath of fresh air. Well done WoTC. Regarding Kinger's comment on price...they are a business, after all, and one that caters to a small, niche market. Plus, nobody is forcing you to buy their product. |
| Kinger10-29-05, 06:14 PM | Hey, I'm not complaining about price. I'm willing to pay the 50-odd dollars for a sourcebook if I want it. I'm just saying that they tend to be among the "expensive" items in the book/comic store, aside from the real rarities. A paperback novel will set you back what, $10 tops? Not many D&D products in that price range. :) Go-go-gadget-rantblock! I've come to the conclusion, based on this thread's responses, that many people on this board cannot comprehend that some questions are actually quite innocent. "There exist people out there that do not have encyclopedic knowledge of D&D campaign settings? Nonsense! He must be a troll!" Guys and gals, I'm quite sure that popular though our hobby may be, D&D and other pen-and-paper RPGs are not quite mainstream. As a result, can we not make the assumption that questions with no inherent hostility are in fact innocent and born of actual curiosity, and are not with the direct intent of yanking chains or rib-poking? As a comparison, I could go to a CCG forum and say (maybe, granted, in a few more words) "Hey, what's the difference between Magic and Yu-Gi-Oh? I mean, besides the anime art-style thing?" and it would really be an innocent question. I know how to play Magic, but have never even SEEN a Yu-Gi-Oh card. I just know they're collectible card games involving "creatures" that you use against opponents. My point is you're not making us look all that good by leaping at the throat of the poster (or attempting to be the better man through the label of "troll") when the post in question could quite conceivably have no hostile intent at all. |
| Lurkalot10-29-05, 06:18 PM | I would say a more fair and apt analogy would be that Forgotten Realms is to Eberron like the Medieval Times is to the Industrial Revolution. Eberron is a carefully plotted movie with good pacing, believable acting and a real feeling of suspense. Forgotten Realms is thirty-seven movies of varying genres all playing at the same time on the same screen. And some of them are cartoons too. IMHO. |
| The White Sorcerer10-29-05, 06:25 PM | Guys, KNOCK IT OFF, before someone reports you for harassment. To answer the question, yes, Eberron IS like the Forgotten Realms. Both belong to the high fantasy sword and sorcery genre. There are differences, even major ones, but at their hearts both are very classical D&D worlds. To the other patrons, remember the Golden Guideline: "If what I am about to post makes me sound like a complete ass, I'd better think twice before posting it." |
| Medesha10-29-05, 06:39 PM | I thought twice, and it still seemed a good idea to post. I haven't seen such an obvious troll in a long time. One might say the biggest difference between FR and Eberron is the number of Eberron players who like to slam FR. |
| The White Sorcerer10-29-05, 07:29 PM | I haven't seen such an obvious troll in a long time. I'll have to completely disagree with you on that one. There is no hostility in the opening post, just a question and an opinion, neither of which seems like trolling. One might say the biggest difference between FR and Eberron is the number of Eberron players who like to slam FR. Yup. Makes me feel ashamed to belong to this community sometimes. "Oh look, he's comparing Eberron to the Great Satan of roleplaying, grab the acid flasks!" |
| The White Sorcerer10-29-05, 07:36 PM | Yeah, they are the same. The question was "Is [Eberron] like Forgotten Realms?" not "Is Eberron the same as Forgotten Realms?" |
| DoveArrow10-29-05, 07:56 PM | Maybe we should ask the original poster what he thinks the similarities are between the two settings. |
| Tek10-29-05, 08:05 PM | There is no hostility in the opening post, just a question and an opinion, neither of which seems like trolling. It's called baiting. He's trying to get another huge arguement started up like the one a month or so ago. Not to mention, I don't owe this guy anything. I -might- have answered truthfully or ya'know, not being an ass, but when this random guy shows up on the forum, and his posts are averaged to something like two words, yeah, I don't care about this guy. At all. It looks alot like it (to me). ?? WHAT?!?!?! Defend -that- crap all you want, Sorcerer. He can report me for harrasment all he wants. Just like we'll report him for being a troll. |
| The White Sorcerer10-29-05, 08:53 PM | It's called baiting. He's trying to get another huge arguement started up like the one a month or so ago. Okay. Pray tell, how is the opening post argumentative? From the other posts by Duel_Dude, it seems he/she doesn't even know what trolling is. I could be wrong, but that's the feeling I'm getting. |
| Duel_Dude10-29-05, 10:02 PM | I don't know what trolling is. |
| Radkres10-29-05, 10:14 PM | Read this Troll (http://catb.org/~esr/jargon/html/T/troll.html) |
| Save-vs-DM10-29-05, 10:48 PM | Well, they are similar in the broad brush of things. You can do similar things with each of them. To use an analogy I just made up. Both the Forgotten Realms and Eberron are the same movie. The Forgotten Realms is directed by Peter Jackson and Jerry Bruckheimer Eberron is directed by Alfred Hitchcock and Quentin Tarentino They vary wildly in theme if not so much content. Eberron is a bit more "modern" and some feel that it makes a bit mroe sense. Forgotten Realms is your more classic high fantasy setting Eberron is a sort of grittier, pulp-noir fantasy setting Check out the Eberron FAQ for Newbies thread, that might help you out a bit as well. Cheers, Save vs DM |
| The White Sorcerer10-29-05, 10:48 PM | Troll (http://catb.org/~esr/jargon/html/T/troll.html) This thread fits none of the definitions. |
