| Rechan03-14-06, 06:56 PM | There's practically no one posting anything on the Eberron boards. So, let's have a relatively Open Discussion thread. Whatcha guys wanna talk about? |
| Splendide03-14-06, 06:57 PM | Forgotten Realms |
| Rechan03-14-06, 07:03 PM | Forgotten Realms HEATHEN! :D |
| igotsmeakabob!!03-14-06, 07:19 PM | Yeah I wanna puke now. Seriously though, Eberron makes FR look so... bleh. |
| Rechan03-14-06, 07:25 PM | Come on now. There's no need to hate on other campaign settings. I personally would take FR any day over Greyhawk, but I'm not going to spit on Greyhawk fans. |
| igotsmeakabob!!03-14-06, 07:35 PM | I'm not spitting on them... well.. the comment may have been a bit harsh but I'm just a huge fan of Eberron. |
| yossarius03-14-06, 07:38 PM | Seriously, though. The problem with FR (and Greyhawk, and Dragonlance) is the novels. Everything important to be done happens in the novels. You're choice, as a Dm, is to either force your players to do nothing but small, unimportant things, or rule that whatever happens in the novels hasn't happened in your campaign (and what fun is that?) The great thing about Eberron is that, because it's so new, everything that needs to be done hasn't been done yet. It's a whole field of untouched possibilites. |

Sounds fine to me. Same thing that's happening in Eberron: The Game Story doesn't Advance. It's up to the DM. |
| DoveArrow03-14-06, 08:21 PM | Our group doesn't actually read the novels, so we get to do all kinds of things to the world. For example, we've cut one of the planes off from the Material Plane, we've brought back to evil gods by accident (I want to say Myrkul and Bhaal, but I don't remember for sure), and we've accidentally been responsible for Tharuziden killing Cyric (yeah, I know Tharuziden's a Greyhawk god, but we were running 'Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil,' and he became a major villain). All in all, a little destructive, but nonetheless interesting. |
| Rechan03-14-06, 08:34 PM | Aw. I always dug Cyric (in comparison to say, Bhaal, who was just a jerk and a bully). |
| DoveArrow03-14-06, 08:49 PM | Aw. I always dug Cyric (in comparison to say, Bhaal, who was just a jerk and a bully). I did too. However, my DM thought he sucked, so he killed him. Whatever. |
| okaynowa03-14-06, 09:03 PM | I still have a soft spot in my heart for those old Greyhawk boxed sets and adventures... the Valley of the Mage, the Pinnacles of Abbor-Alz, all that stuff. Eberron makes me want to go back, steal the good bits, and sneak them into hidden corners of Khorvaire. And now for something completely ibex... Has the ECS been translated into anything besides English? Any sightings of a Turkish version, for example? |
| igotsmeakabob!!03-14-06, 09:07 PM | Planescape still holds my attention but with no updates it has fallen behind Eberron. It still makes for a great 2nd edition setting though. |
| Kid SixXx03-14-06, 09:11 PM | Aw. I always dug Cyric (in comparison to say, Bhaal, who was just a jerk and a bully). Elminster is one of my favorite characters. He's equal parts Merlin, Gandalf, and my grumpy grandfather that smacks my knuckles if I reach for the peas before he's blessed the table. If you really take a good look at Elminster, he's one of the better developed characters in any setting. His philosophy on the responsible use of magic is pretty much the old "with great power comes great responsibility" tagline that made Spider Man comics so great. That being said, Voyage of the Golden Dragon cannot hit shelves soon enough. I think I have some old FR stuff to trade into my FLGS that will shave $5 off of the cover price. |

You ate peas as a kid? I read the first two Elminster books, and I liked him. But then, I was introduced to D&D through FR novels. |
| Belabras03-14-06, 09:26 PM | Eberron has everything I loved about stories like the Fafhrd and Grey Mouser stories and such. Forgotten Realms always felt like, well, bad fantasy fiction really. I don't miss it. |
| yossarius03-14-06, 09:35 PM | Dude, what are you talking about? Buttered peas are awesome! (You did say we could talk about anything we wanted.) Well, there's nothing wrong with running those games that way. They sound like they were alot of fun. But they weren't official. I'm not one of those people that get all bent about keeping campaigns original, but that how people are going to judge a campaign. I've at least toyed every campaign setting, but the only ones I've run as written are Birthright and Eberron. I've always been of the opinion that FR & GH were both...........vanilla. |
| Rechan03-14-06, 09:40 PM | Dude, what are you talking about? Buttered peas are awesome! (You did say we could talk about anything we wanted.) Indeed we can! :D Nah, I was a reaaaally finicky eater when I was a kid. To a degree I still am, but I'll try damn near anything. ;) I've at least toyed every campaign setting, but the only ones I've run as written are Birthright and Eberron. I've always been of the opinion that FR & GH were both...........vanilla. FR was pretty much "Everything is crampacked everywhere!" so there's something for everyone. But agreed. I always dug Thay tho. And the Underdark, and Waterdeep, and... Okay, fanboying. |
| igotsmeakabob!!03-14-06, 09:43 PM | Nothing wrong with Fanboying heh. |
| Rechan03-14-06, 10:56 PM | So! Let's get the conversation going still! I want to get this thread a pop'n! For the FR-liking people: Have you used any FR books for Eberron? What? How about elements from FR? For general Eberron folk (since we're here): What is your favorite Eberron badguy/badguy group? |
| igotsmeakabob!!03-14-06, 11:18 PM | Lords of Dust are the great big bad villains, manipulating everything behind the scenes and occasionally sparring with their agents, emerald claw are the classic nazis chasing indiana jones during adventures, Dreaming Dark can be fun to use, especially when you want to throw your players a curveball and give them some spy on spy action. |
| UnkemptSage03-14-06, 11:34 PM | I like the Lords of Dust and the Dreaming Dark. There's just something so... sinister about the two. I especially like how the Lords of Dust can be worked in as the bad guys behind just about everything due to alternate form. And the Dreaming Dark are just plain scary. I mean, they can get into your head and really mess you up, and you could be their unwitting pawn in a power struggle no one would believe existed. |
| Belabras03-14-06, 11:58 PM | I like all the Eberron villains actually. Even the Chamber can be sinister with the right back story to your plot. My least favorite is the Emerald Claw. They can seem awfully close to Cobra from the old G.I. Joe cartoons sometimes. |
| igotsmeakabob!!03-15-06, 12:11 AM | Well then I guess we have different views of Cobra. Especially Cobra Commander. 'They cut uss off! Hmmm... my child exccels at Keeber Elementary Sssschool. Note to sself: DESTROY KEEBER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL!' |
| Rechan03-15-06, 12:29 AM | I personally love Erandis and the EC. I love undead and all that good stuff. LoD are also a favorite. And the Cults? Mmmm. The only one I really forsee myself not making much use of is the Lord of Blades. Partly because I have very little interest in the Mournland. |
| dystmesis03-15-06, 01:06 AM | It's oh so quiet... it's oh so still... You're all alone, and so peaceful until... You fall in love! zim bam! The sky up above! zim bam! Is caving in!! |
| dang03-15-06, 02:07 AM | I personally love Erandis and the EC. I love undead and all that good stuff. LoD are also a favorite. And the Cults? Mmmm. The only one I really forsee myself not making much use of is the Lord of Blades. Partly because I have very little interest in the Mournland. mos def. one thing i love about eberron is the fact that there are many, completely disparate villains to pick from. on krynn, the most choice we ever had was which color dragonarmy to oppose on a given day. then they condensed them into one, then eliminated them altogether in favor of unassailable, near-godlike dragons! i started with dragonlance, but as my tastes became more sophisticated, i realized how bad the novels really were... and they got worse as time went on. i also love the alignments on eberron - there's good and bad everywhere, just in different concentrations. krynn had that awful balance thing -- the bad characters were ambiguously evil, the good characters were insufferable and came off evil, and the neutral characters were what i'd consider good! ach! |
| Dragonlover03-15-06, 03:33 AM | Lords of Dust. Easily the most fun bad guy organisation to use, as they can be literally anywhere. I've not really looked into the daelkyr yet, aberrations are my friends area of expertise, and I daren't use the Chamber against them cos I'll make them too uber and too widespread. The Dreaming Dark are a bit too subtle for my taste, plus I only just started getting to grips with the psionics rules (given theres a telepath and soulknife in the party, seemed like a good idea). The LoBster I'll use if they go to the Mournland, and I'm leaving the EC as the party has no cleric. Dragonlover |

It they weren't Rakshasa, yes. Theses guys look so silly... Hey Yossarius, did you post the recipe for buttered peas in the "The great Book of Eberron Cooking" thread yet? :D |
| Dragonlover03-15-06, 04:43 AM | Admittedly the whole 'backwards hands' thing is just stupid, but evil anthropomorphic tigers? Thats easy to believe, everyone knows cats are evil anyway. Plus using them means you get to have demonic minions, and what DM doesn't like demonic minions? Dragonlover |
| Kid SixXx03-15-06, 05:45 AM | You ate peas as a kid? You ate what was on the table. Othewise you went hungry. ;) Grandpa didn't take kindly to insubordination at the dinner table. :D |
| shadowpavement03-15-06, 08:03 AM | MMMMMMM......I like Peas I really like house Tarkinan as a villan. Lots of good options ofr strange powers to develop and be used against the PC's. Especially now that there is some expanded info on Aberant marks from PGtE. I bet any kids in house Trakinan has to eat their peas...Mwaaahaahaa |
| Fabius Maximus03-15-06, 01:21 PM | Admittedly the whole 'backwards hands' thing is just stupid, but evil anthropomorphic tigers? Thats easy to believe, everyone knows cats are evil anyway. Plus using them means you get to have demonic minions, and what DM doesn't like demonic minions? Dragonlover Nah, cats aren't evil per se. They're just independent. I have a problem with most anthropomorphic animal monsters. It's just cheesy, like the respective designer ran out of ideas. Ever seen a picture of a loxo? The only ones I can tolerate are gnolls (and flinds). |
| Dragonlover03-15-06, 01:28 PM | Yeah, loxo are stupid. As are yakfolk. I mean, neutral evil anthropomorphic yaks? What in gods name were they on? Not only that, but why the whole 'staff affinity' thing. Just plain wierd. Dragonlover |
| igotsmeakabob!!03-15-06, 02:28 PM | Yeah Gnolls are classic, and actually kick ass in Eberron... thumbs up to gnolls. |
| Joni-san03-15-06, 02:48 PM | A thing we should take to heart. (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8682508) |
| Rechan03-15-06, 04:23 PM | Guys guys guys. The reason that Rakshashas are anthro tigers with backwards hands is not because the designers just got up one day and wanted to be weird. It's because there was some precidence. First of all, Rakshasas are evil Hindu demons (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rakshasa). Then, other aspects of the Rakshasa in D&D was stolen from various forms of fiction. Quoting the wiki: Although not particularly common in Western fiction, the short-lived 1974 television series Kolchak: The Night Stalker (which influenced The X-Files) has an episode (Horror in the Heights) featuring a Rakshasa which is vulnerable to blessed crossbow bolts. In the Exile and Avernum series of games, Rakshasas are magic-casting tiger lookalikes; they're one of the more particularly nasty adversaries in the later stages of the game. |
| Belabras03-15-06, 04:34 PM | Check out the old black & white film "Thief of Baghdad" It's a good watch, and pays hommage to the ol' blessed crossbow bolt thing as well. |
| Dragonlover03-15-06, 04:41 PM | I semi-knew this, which is why I don't mind them. Plus in Eberron they're like a major bad guy, so they aren't just another random monster for the players to gain XP from. Dragonlover |
| Rechan03-15-06, 04:41 PM | Check out the old black & white film "Thief of Baghdad" It's a good watch, and pays hommage to the ol' blessed crossbow bolt thing as well. Would that be the 1920s version, or the 1940s one? There's two by that name. |
| Belabras03-15-06, 05:23 PM | Would that be the 1920s version, or the 1940s one? There's two by that name. The 1940's one (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0033152/). I'm pretty sure the 1920's one was a silent film. |
| Rechan03-15-06, 06:07 PM | The 1940's one (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0033152/). I'm pretty sure the 1920's one was a silent film. Consider it on my Netflix queue. :D |
| DoveArrow03-15-06, 06:42 PM | A thing we should take to heart. (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8682508) An interesting read. I definitely like the fact that it's not all 'I hate Forgotten Realms and Eberron is da roxxor!" However, I don't think we'll be seeing an Elminster character for Eberron any time soon. As Keith has stated many times, the players are supposed to be the heroes. Adding NPC heroes will only take away from that. |
| Belabras03-15-06, 09:29 PM | Consider it on my Netflix queue. :D You can get that on DVD?!? |
| (Psi)SeveredHead03-15-06, 10:27 PM | I'm liking using organization bits as villains. It's not House X you're fighting, just some members who figure killing you brings them profit. |
| NekoWorldOrder03-15-06, 10:41 PM | Am I the only person that uses the Aurum in any shape or form? |
| Rechan03-15-06, 10:44 PM | You can get that on DVD?!? As you can see... (http://www.netflix.com/MovieDisplay?movieid=60011397&trkid=90529) |
| (Psi)SeveredHead03-15-06, 10:58 PM | Am I the only person that uses the Aurum in any shape or form? Pieces of the Aurum (pieces of eight?) can be used as villains, just like pieces of Dragonmarked Houses. Does anyone know where on Khorvaire you could find Siberys shards? |
| Rechan03-15-06, 11:55 PM | Am I the only person that uses the Aurum in any shape or form? See, I'd use the Aurum but I just can't conceptualize them. I can't think of any plots they'd be involved in because I'm not a very good subtle thinker. They're like the DD for me; I can't think of anything they'd Do that would involve the PCs. |
| Dragom03-15-06, 11:58 PM | Probably from a Seren Pilgrim for a big chunk of change. |
| ORC_Paradox03-16-06, 12:22 AM | Guys, we've got an off topic board for the general chatter. |
