The thread discussing novels is getting nowhere fast. I thought I'd diverge a bit and actually ask a question about one of the novels.

Janik Martell is a character in In the Claws of the Tiger. Does anyone know what kind of character he is? I know the rest of the group includes a paladin, and artificer and a wizard (at least I think Mathas is a wizard) but I have no clue about Janik other than he's good with a short sword. Can anyone enlighten me?

Mr. Wyatt?

Janik Martell is quoted in the PGTE on pg. 12 and said to be an extreme explorer. Having read only the synopsis of In The Claws of the Tiger and knowing he is quoted under the heading scholar adventurer I'd probably make him an expert/extreme explorer. If you wanted to use all PC classes rogue or ranger could replace expert but I think expert works best if all that jumped out at you was his use of a short sword and not his limited spellcasting(bard) traps ability (rogue) or nature ability (ranger) and fighter just lacks the skill points for scholarly research.

Perhaps you are thinking of Diran from Thieves of Blood?

He was probably a base rogue. Took the Education feat and pumped knowledges, went into Extreme explorer. Seems Janik's original part was a Wizard, a Cleric, a Fighter, and him as the Rogue...

Later he's an extreme explorer, the wizard's still a wizard, he's got an artificer, and the fighter became a paladin.

He made short work of Raksasha and a couple other high level creatures (once his weapon was tweaked by the Artificer) so I seriously doubt that he is an Expert. I put their party in the 9th-11th level range, maybe even 12th basing it purely on the CR of creatures they fought and defeated. If I had to guess his classes I would say Fighter 1/Rogue 7/Extreme Explorer 3.

This sounds good. As I said I had not read the book and I don't like to give NPCs PC levels. Especially since the ECS says extreme explorer should rarely be given to NPCs and usually only as plot devices. So if I was going to make him for my PCs to encounter I'd stick with expert but if I were to play him as a PC this sounds like exactly what I would go for. Nice work.

I have Janik's full stats written up. They're all 9th level, at least at the start of the book. Possible they hit 10th by the end.I statted Janik as a rogue 5/extreme explorer 4. Dania is fighter 6/paladin 3. Mathas is a specialist diviner (9th level). And Auftane's a straight artificer.

Ummm... you realize that you can use PC classes for NPCs, right? There are such things as enemy wizards, artificers and clerics...

You just shouldn't use NPCs with NPC classes as bartenders & innkeepers.

Of course. But why would I want to detract from the specialness of my players. Any NPC I create and don't get from a book uses SOME NPC classes. Only BBEGs use pure PC classes. I am not using Janik Martell as a BBEG.

So a party of 9th level characters can easily defeat 3 CR 8 monsters? That's EL 11, which should be a difficult fight that expends a great deal of the party's resources. And they did it like 5 times in a row.

Give me a break, they're all level 11 to 12 at the beginning and the end.

Maybe they were given an especially bountiful point-buy upon generation?

Good rolls, character builds, tactics, and a nice DM would easily make their accomplishments possible. Doubly so if you're using a house rule like Reserve Points from Unearthed Arcana.
