It says in the book that the Karnathi Army is bolstered with undead troops. It also says that the Karnathi Skeleton and Zombie can speak. a trait that i don't think the standard skeleton and zombie have. the book also says that a deal with Priests of the Blood of Vol and created the Order of the Emerald Claw. Now, these skeletons are stronger, tougher and have the ablity to speak. are they sentient? is their "term" of service ever up?

Yup, i'd think of them as sentient as they have an intelligence score and a good one at that at 11 and I think only Kaius can tell if their "term" of service would be up.

They may have an average intelligence score but what does a skeleton have to do once its term of service is up? its not like it has a skeletal wife and children to go back to.

I also doubt that the army would destroy their own numbers, waste of materials, time, money and effort.

If anything they would probably set them to a guard duty, you dont have to pay a skeleton whats he going to buy? food, water? heck he dosent even have to sleep!

well lets see what other sentient race in eberron fits this bill...
oh yeah WARFORGED and guess what under the treaty of Thronehold they are sentient so i guess as a lawyer from House Sivis i must on account of my client, Blarg the Zombie file a law suit against the government of Karrnath in order to see that my client is given the full respect due to a sentient being

that is probably why only the most loyal people are turned into the stronger undead. The ones that would complain are turned into the mindless ones.

Well in contrary to warforged, they are not living, not even partially, so my guess is: cheap labor force, and keep in mind, Karrnath is still under military ruling so they would probably still patrol a lot, and of course many of the undead work for the Blood of Vol now.

The individuals relative loyalty doesn't matter overly much; those turned into Karrnathi undead, while intelligent, aren't the same people they were while living. Very little of the original person remains behind.

Also, Intelligence doesn't necessarily translate into desire. I'd wager they don't care for much other than serving Karrnath.

Rajorke - I think you made a valid point here, but if you read up on Karrnath a bit, I think you'll see that they don't exactly follow the treaty when it comes to Warforged, who are laborers and second-class citizens. (This is either found under the Warforged description/sidebar or the Karrnath section.)

Therefore it's not surprising that they have sentient undead as virtual slaves.

This is true (as long as what Keith says is true for Eberron) but I think the loyalty of the zombified subject is important. The book specifies that the Karnath undead are done with the corpses of loyal karnathi soldier. I think (and houes-rules) that is this loyalty that let them be returned as Stronger-than-usual undead, their willingness to fight for Karnath even after their mortal life, so to speak.

And IIRC Kaith said that while they could be used for menial works they kind of resent it. They were raised to fight, not to be farmers.

They were raised to fight, not to be farmers.

For some reason now I have this mental image of wholesome zombies in overalls and straw hats, tilling the fields with a cheerful farmhouse in the background.

"'ey Bill!"
"Wha?"
"Look's like your ear done dropped off again."
"Ah, ferget it, it's good for the soil at least."

"Maw, what's fer dinner?"
"Braaains, Paw!"
"Awright! Bill, wanna stay fer some braaains? The missus makes the best braaaain stew this side o' Karrnath County."
"Much obliged, much obliged."

Why would an undead's term of service ever end ? They were brought back to serve in an army - not to till farms.

No matter what their desires might be, they are bound to serve until the end of their undead existance. They're still skeletons and zombies and are not free-willed AFAICT, so they have to follow orders, even if they could express a desire not to (which I doubt).

[QUOTE=Rajorke]well lets see what other sentient race in eberron fits this bill...oh yeah WARFORGED

Well excuse me, unlike the skeletons the warforged have a free will, and civil rights. They can run outside and play with all the other warforgedlings.

The skeletons are re-animated remains of their best troops and probably some of the enemies too. Who are bound to the will of their master(whomever that may be) not having any rights at all.

Personally, if i had a legion of undead i wouldent bother paying them or giving them any rights, they have no need of them. and if they did, they follow whatever i say anyways.

Me:"gimmi back all you wages"
skeleton: "yes master"
Me: "now go do a hand stand in the corner"
skeleton: "???.. yes master"

In the game tho, they make great pawns. Toss a half dozen at the pc's at a time, realitavly easy with lots of treasure for their level. You can make bigger groups with a bunch of normal skeletons and zombies for that single beefy character in the party.

The one thing that hasn't been mentioned so far:

What happens when these reanimated soldiers are recognized by family (former wives), etc...?

Picture a mother and children traveling by coach...they are stopped by a zombie patrol...the sergeant of the patrol is "good ol' pa"...just all manged up and needing a deodorant bath?!?!?! :mymy:

Weird plot hooks abound! :D

Sure, it is possible.

But what about their families?

What if the "proud zombies" want more out of life...like fighting in the war, and then going home to honey?

that's probably one of the silliest things I've ever heard... what would a living woman want to do with an undead and rotting man? Even if he was her husband at one point in his living life. Eew comes to mind when picturing this :\

even if the undead is more enhanced than normal ones... being able to call apon thier true life's skills and feats, this doesn't make them free of will completely. this is what you would call borrowed time and you gotta pay the piper.

When did I EVER say that the wife wanted the husband????

I asked, what happens if she sees him? This has to be traumatic/weird.

Also, a zombie with int may in fact want some of what he had in his previous "life." HE may follow her around with flowers and wooing her.

Maybe next time, before you say that it is the silliest thing you've ever heard, you might try reading before reacting :teach:

Well, in all seriousness, as I see it anyway, the undead soldier wouldn't have any memories of his spouse or any part of his previous life. He'd just be this drooling and/or skeletal monster wearing the tattered uniform of a former soldier (making it all the more horrible for the spouse to see).

On that note, would the Karrnathis make the undead soldiers change into Karrnathi uniforms? Maybe not -- maybe they take advantage of the horror and intimidation factor of their army being a motley mish-mash of former warriors from other nations.

All that said, maybe fallen commanding officers of opposing armies are made into more powerful undead. How weird would it be for your CO, who was lost behind Karrnathi lines yesterday, to come back today as a vampire, possessed of all the knowledge it had in life?

"Alright worms, I'm back, and I order y'all to present your necks for inspection! I SAID NOW, MAGGOTS!"

The thing that got me to wondering about the zombie's "thoughts" is that I heard they have an INT score of 11. Is this true? If so, I can imagine them remembering a lot more than folks are comfortable with.

Either way (INT or no INT) I just picture the George Romero Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead scenarios wherein the dead are still recognizable by one who once loved them. And with armies composed of such folks, it could get weird...

Ok, first off, before you start running your mouth at me. This was meant as a joke, I found the idea funny and said so. Secondly, it was niether stated nor denied that the wife would/wouldn't want him at all so I took it how I wanted.

Try not to take such offence to a totally meaningless comment on something you vaugly said in passing. And beyond that, it was a joke, not a serious ritcule of your post.

#1 misconception of Karrnathi undead: They randomaly raise corpses in a battlefield. It says in the description of Karrnathi Skeletons and Zombies that they are the reanimated corpses of elite Karrnathi soldiers. They don't reanimate the corpses of their enemies, or even all of their own soldiers.

But despite the fact that they are intelligent and tough, they only have a Charisma score of 1... Probably not much will to do anything except follow orders. That is the same charisma as most golems, less than any animal, a lot less than any other intelligent undead, the same as unintelligent undead, and a lot less than even mindless living spells.

Keith specified that even if the undead are intelligent, they are not the same persons that they were in life.

About the families, if a family have reasons to be proud if one of them die figthining for his country, they should be even prouder that him keep fightining eve after death. (to not mention that they probably get the dead soldier's pay as long as he serve, i figure.)

Well, usually widows of soldiers get a war pension if her husband died in service. It is only logical to pay them if their late husband keep serving after dead.

Nev is right, the Karnathi's INT 11 shows that they are smart enough to speak, follow orders, use strategy, work as a team, and improvise in a tight situation. But the CHA 1 means that they have few memories, little in the way of eloquence, and not much personality.

Basially built to follow orders and nothing more. I dont see why they wouldent re-raise comaders of the enemy forces, might as well get as many able bodies as possable, and if they follow your orders just as well. thumbs up to you.
