Khyber [Archive] - Wizards Community

08-03-05, 06:50 PM I will shortly give my PCs the chance to explore the depths of Khyber, and I wanted to get an idea of exactly what Khyber is from the creative people on these boards. So, without further ado, I'll start asking questions.

1) What is Khyber like physically?
Obviously it's characterized by undergroundedness and a lack of sunlight, but what other distinguishing features does it have? Some sources lead me to believe that there is a healthy amount of geothermal activity. How often should someone traveling in Khyber expect to come upon a lava flow? One model I was considering has the amount of geothermal activity increase the farther down you go. So just below the surface you'd have your "regular" Underdark, full of dank caverns and winding tunnel, but a few miles below the surface, you'd have a more hellish area full of lakes of fire and rivers of lava. This ties into my next question...

2) What's the population like in Khyber? How is it distributed?
There's your standard Underdark monsters (with the important exception of the Drow, they're on Xen'drik), but doesn't the ECS put Khyber as the domain of fiends? And then there's the Eberron-specific doglrims, dolgaunts and daelkyr. How do they fit in? Again, in my prototype vison of Khyber, I see the more "traditional" Underdark denizens nearer to the surface, distributed according to relative strength and available resources; the fiends mostly down in the lake-o-fire type areas; and, as the lords of Khyber, the daelkyr are pretty much wherever they please.

So what's your take on Khyber? Thanks in advance for your input. :D

08-04-05, 05:28 PM Seems like it'd have less in the way of civilization when compared to the Underdark, and heavier on the aberrations (not to mention cultists). Have you looked at the Khyber Dragonshard Cavern excerpt? http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20050803a&page=4
It may be slightly useful as a guide for parts of Khyber.

(Edit): The Underdark book might be helpful as well, especially the section on the lower levels of the Underdark.
