dvsman 02-07-05, 09:22 PM	As a contributor to the bi-weekly fansite of the Chronicle I was curious what the general opinion of it was. We recieve a fair amount of traffic but we rarely hear how we are doing. If you could take the time to comment on the material within; is it good, poor, does it give you ideas for your game or put you off. What would you like to see more of, less of. What can we do to make it better. Thank you I'm writing this of my own volition without the knowledge of my Chronicle peers. Please do not think this topic is a reflection of the entire group.

Be thankfull that there is SOMETHING fan written out there. Something so well put together that it looks professional enough to be featured at wizards itself. "Its not intresting" Thats bull. Its very intresting. Its fun to read backround stories and "articles" of stuff that could be happening in your own game. You really need to start up the engine on your imagination kid. P.S. It seems more logical to follow a gnomish team or at least something related to Korranberg. All in all, I give the Chronicle a 7 out of 10. Good, but could be greater. -TRRW

As somone who partially runs one of the Eberron Fan sites (Breland Ledger), I feel when you insult one of us, you insult all of us. We work hard and love what we do. Stuff like that hurts is all. As one of the writer's im certainly not going to deny that the articles i submit are those that i found fun to write, or had direct links into my own campaign. Would you expand on your 2 points though - what do you believe the KC would contain and what would you find useful in yours and others campaigns ? Regards..

Remember this is a fan based publication not official WOTC stuff - we write this stuff because:- a) its fun b) its a great way of driving our own campaigns c) we enjoy writing the stuff d) we hope others enjoy it e) all of the above. I did not realize it was fan written. In that case I feel that its a good thing that fans are able to be active in the shaping of Eberron (however minor). Had I realized this I would not have mentioned more dragonshards as that is not a possibilty. 2. My opinion was asked for, I gave it. 3. What does this have to do with my imagination. I don't find a piece of work interesting, that has nothing to do with my imagination. Why dont you submit a story of you own them? Well I hadn't thought of that, not to mention I just don't like the style of newspaper writing. I believe I'd better enjoy short, open ended stories that could provide us with ideas about certain issues in the ECS such as the Elmerald Claw, ways to twist the plot that were completely unnoficial, basically something to draw from. Well, I'm glad its fun for you, and by the looks of it many other people enjoy it as well, mine is just the opinion of one person. The suggestion I've given probably isn't appropriate to an article entitled "the Korranberg Chronicle" and as I've said I don't like the style its written in, its just something with me.
law 02-08-05, 06:16 PM	Many of us are trying to add to the flaver of eberron since it has alot of room for people to do that. I myself do not read the Korranberg Chronicles that much (ok I only red the first one). Im more intreasted in other things. So my thoughts on this. So long as at least one person gets something out of it it is worth doing. Me, Trolls, Jhonny, the people at the Korranberg Chronicles do the types of things we do just to give at least one person something to use. I might be the oldest at doing this type of thing (do not ask when I started since any profe I can give is no longer on the web when the one web site it was on died). But they have been putting more into it then I did before eberron came out (and still do since theres more then one person there). They work as a team and can get more out of it. Just rember so long as one person uses it and has a good time (other then the people that made it) it is worth doing.
Puppy 02-08-05, 07:57 PM	I for one think you're doing a brilliant job. Especially in volume 1 where you included the obituary of (or article about) Bonal Geldem. Will snag that one and use it in my campaign (even though my PCs have finished that adventure). I find it a testament to the quality of you site that I (and also one of the persons above) thought that the material actually was made by WotC. Really looking forward to your first adventure. Keep up the good work. 9 out of 10. :D
DBlizzard 02-08-05, 11:44 PM	I really like the concept and have used it a bit as a player. I plan to use it as a GM for color. If the players jump on an article for some roleplaying options, more the better. I'd have more detailed criticisms if I had use it more often, I'm sure. Some suggestions for what I'd like it to be: More articles that give hints at adventures, without including any follow up. Plot hooks are always good. Less articles that assume significant things in the campaign world. I brought the issue with the Sharn "snowstorm" to the game I play in as a prop and realized that something like that really requires the DM to plan for its use. The lack of snow in Sharn was a giveaway ;) A classified section. You have ads, go a little bit further. They are always good to get player's interest and to add flavor.

But I do have a few criticisms(please take these constructively, and know that I really appreciate what you're doing): 1. The "voice" of the writing just doesn't seem right: it doesn't read like a newspaper. Honestly, I'm not entirely sure what I'd do to change it, but I feel like "The Sharn Inquisitive" does a much better job at capturing the newspaper "style". This is obviously extremely difficult, but perhaps put a bit of thought into how it's written as well as what is being written about 2. Weather reports are a bit too "modern" for my liking. If you're going to put them in, they shouldn't show exact temperatures and have little funny modern-style pictures. 3. I've noticed a few glaring grammatical errors. Can't point you to them right now, but please, for us grammar sticklers out there, fix it up? ----
Fevil 02-09-05, 06:55 AM	I think its superb, and plan to start writing submissions for it as soon as my players start doing something worth writing about! I use it a a prop for my game. I print out the fancy version, glue pages 1-2, 3-4, 5-6 etc together and then cut off the remaining white paper, et voila an ready to use copy of the Korranberg Chronicle! I have only done this with issure one, but it has really had a great effect on my players, especially as one of them comented sarcastically "pfft....does it have a sports section?" only to be struck dumb when the Orcball atricle was shown to him. :D I will continue using it as an outlet for my Dynamic campaign and hope to one day have my players reading about themselves in ti. Kudos guys.
stevelabny 02-09-05, 09:02 AM	I dont want to speak for anyone, BUT i do believe those that have made harsh critical statements think that you are talking about the Sharn Inquisitive articles on the Wizards site, and NOT the Korranberg Chronicle fan-written newspaper. At least, thats how I'm reading this thread. My Eberron campaign doesnt start until March or April when my current campaign ends, but I LOVE the Korranberg Chronicles. I cant say I have read every or even most of the articles, but it is very well done. When I run my campaign, I probably plan on editing the KCs, subbing out my least favorite articles (and the sports section, i must say i DON'T like orcball) and replacing them with campaign-specific articles. It is ALWAYS great to use props. Keep up the good work.
Ch@pel 02-09-05, 10:08 PM	Thanks everybody for the feedback. Hopefully all the other writers for the KC will read this thread, its very useful to have this kind of constructive criticism. Our goal from the beginning was to give everyone who liked Eberron something to read during the interminable dry-spells of official material. (other than Dragonshards, of course) We do our best to make it look and sound like a real newpaper, with varying degrees of sucess. But for us, as volunteers, it really is all about what we like to write. Fortunately, that usually coincides nicely with what other people like to read. Its nice to hear comments about specfic things you'd like to see and I'm sure you'll see changes in the format and writing that reflect that. This is a learning process, but you'd be surprised at how professional a lot of the people working on it are. We have at least one person getting published in Dragon and another *almost canon* source. ;) Personally, as a DM, its great for me when my players see an article in the KC and want to follow a plot hook in their game; its a great way to draw them into the world. It also helps me whenever the players go off the beaten path of my adventure, since I've got a bunch of detailed characters, events, and places all written up for me. I believe I'd better enjoy short, open ended stories Might I humbly suggest The Tsevenae Report? :) We have a fairly broad scope of material that we offer; straight forward articles, articles that tie into official products, and fan fiction. You can even expect to see a fully detailed adventure module with maps as a free download soon. We try to cover all the bases and hope everyone can find at least one thing that interests them. Save-vs-DM 02-09-05, 10:28 PM	Always good to see some feedback. If those of you didn't know, I'm responisble for the website and layout (I make things look purty). This is a fan work in progress, so we're always happy to find ways to improve things. I've noticed a split on Orcball. I didn't come up with the original idea, but I did refine it with the help of a few others. Currently we're only running orcball articles one out of every three issues. The point about taking a better stance on the Zilargo team is a good one that I hadn't thought of before. I'll try to skew things a bit towards the Trolls perspective just a bit more (and in fact, I just had a wondefully good idea for the next issue, thanks!) I'm still trying to get the weather page to look better. You think the graphics are a bit too "new." I've faded them, but perhaps some pen and ink drawings would be better served? I also have one other question - how do people feel about the layout in general, as well as the website layout? Any material you'd like to see on the website (aside from Issue 3, which we really are going to post soon!)? Thanks for the honest feedback. Like they say, you can't please everyone all the time. Gurv 02-09-05, 11:02 PM	I read the K.C. whenever an issue comes out. I've even thought about contributing something sometime. Hopefully, I'll think of something and get around to sending it in. First of all, I'd like to say that it is an impressive achievement. The articles look good, the layout is nice, and all in all it is very impressive for fan-based material. I feel confidant that more effort goes into this than into the official 'Sharn Inquisitive'. You should take the fact that some people have mistaken it as official material as a compliment as well. Good job. Now, if I were to make any requests, it would be for more 'adventure hook' articles. Although some of the articles could be used this way (the recent article on manifest zones in Xen'drik is a perfect example), the rest is less useful. Very good reading, but not something I could use. In fact, it is generally the non-regular features that have the most 'plot hook' material. Orcball, while an interesting concept that might get passing reference in my game, isn't likely to develop enough of a player following that the scores will be important, let alone a play-by-play. The 'Lady H' articles are another example of something that doesn't lend itself to much use. Lastly is the page devoted to the weather...its a nice touch to make the newspaper look real, but not a useable feature. Why are most of the articles about things happening in Sharn? This may be just a perspective thing; maybe those just stick out in my mind. But if your newspaper is based in Korranberg, it should talk more about Zilargo, with only the 'biggest' news from Sharn making headlines. The 'Lady H' section is a good example of this. You've done a good job in the past with follow-up articles. I realize that it goes against what I've already said, since it would reduce the ability to use them as plot hooks, but I would like to know the outcome of certain things. I hope that there will be more on the Shadowraven mentioned last issue. I want to know what Masako Kaeda is wanted for. I suppose I can't have my cake and eat it too...but going one way or the other about providing details would be good. Just a few ideas.
Zarina 02-10-05, 02:50 AM	I love the paper, but also think you need more fun ad's for places, and people, like inquisitors. Also love the dining section and bodice and breechs, needs more juicy gossip. But over all much better then the sharn inquisitor

It would be nice to see letters from some of the bbeg type organizations protesting "mis-information" about them that made it into the paper. Plus you get the chance to have people write letters to ther editor about topics such as how warforged shouldn't be allowed to roam freely as they are a danger to 'real' citizens.

Now, I'm not going to say that the online KC is a perfect match to my vision of the actual KC. But what I would say is that I seriously doubt that the bulk of the material in the KC would be about Zilargo. It's intentionally designed to be a national chronicle, of interest to everyone in Khorvaire - and the gnomes themselves want to know about what's going on in the world, especially because Zilargo is one of the more peaceful and stable nations in Khorvaire. Remember, right from page 133 of the ECS, the motto of the KC is "If it happens in the Five Nations, you'll read about it in the KC"... and technically, Zilargo isn't part of the Five Nations! Taking the Lady H column in particular, I see that as the equivalent of People magazine, or Elle, or Glamour. It deals with celebrities - and most of the celebrities are in Hollywood or NYC. It doesn't matter where People is published. What matters is that Sharn is where fashion and gossip catch the public eye. It is the biggest city in Khorvaire - vastly larger than Korranberg itself - and people across the nation will be interested in what's going on there. So perhaps there should be some effort to make sure it's not just a paper about Sharn; but Sharn is a city where news is made and where many of the nation's celebrities will be seen, so it wouldn't surprise me that a chronicle about newsmakers of the continent would have stories about it.

I'm not sure how good the artists on the staff are, but maybe drawing inspiration from illuminated texts or woodcuts might be an avenue for experimentation. Another suggestion might be to use a temperature scale other than Celsius or Fahrenheit. Whether one you invent yourself, or an obscure scale, to give the weather report that exotic, otherworldly feel...
