Recently I got new addition to my Eberron book collection - Dragonmarked and Faiths of Eberron. But i am badly surprised by the lack of index again.

Then i got all book from the shelf and put them on my desk, and checked the pages. Only the ECS and Player's Guide to Eberron had an index. All others lack it (i got Sharn index from Keith Bakers home page) and i wonder why.

Does anyone know why they lack such important thing in supplement books? I have no idea. :(

Is there some sort of index like the one by Kaith Baker somewhere in the net?

I've heard that head honchos don't like indexes because they take up valuable space in an already cramped project. I happen to think they're worth it, though.

Also, they are a lot of work, and perhaps the publishers feel that the production cost of indexes isn't worth the benefit.

Although having someone go through the completed text for the index might also help with the editing for errors, which have been noticeable.

I agree. It would seem like it'd be worthwhile for them to invest in someone to not only compile an index for each work, but to double check the editing and look for any continuity problems at the same time.

I think any one of 1000 people here would be willing to do that.

WotC is floating an idea through consumer polls about a website subscription service. This will include, along with a pc generator and online tabletop, indexes for all books.

Whether this was conceived after the fact to fill a need or the indexes were left out to help such a service is a question for the conspiracy folks...but it is worth a few moments of thought.

Everything is about expanding the business model, isn't it? I wish consumers would actually start deciding with their pockets already.

And no, downloading books instead of purchasing them isn't fighting the good fight.

I won't support this because I find it abhorable, and I don't want to pay more to fix for an initially defective product. Bad business model. This sounds a lot like paying EA to unlock cheat codes on my XBOX 360 -- codes which are free on PS2.
