Honestly, Nic, I'm confused by Vreen. Any light you could shed would be appreciated. From what I gather, it's -
In Argonnessen...
Was inhabited by Sarlonan humans and Aereni elves...
The inhabitants were "invited", which sounds like it was an open, friendly thing...
And this occured "as the giants grew to majesty on the far shores of Xen'drik."
But if the giants haven't yet grown to majesty, how can there even BE "Aereni elves", given that Aerenal wasn't founded until after the giant civilization was destroyed... by the dragons? And what level of civilization did the humans have? I've always assumed that humans are one of the younger civilizations - that Lhazaar only came to Khorvaire 3,000 years ago because human civilization had only reached its age of exploration at that time. If there were humans around back 40,000 years ago, what have they done in the intervening time? If they were supposed to be barbarians, that's one thing - it just seems to paint a strange picture, with essentially the modern civilizations coexisting with the past ones. The idea of the "invitation" also seems a little strange to me; I would expect the dragons to just take the people they want, not go through such an elaborate ruse.

Beyond that, is this in your opinion the same Du'rashka Tul found in Argonnessen, or a more subtle variation? In SoX, it's described as a "homicidal rage... (victims) spread out, killing every creature they encounter until they themselves are slain." To me, it sounds more sudden and brutal than what you're describing - more like 28 Days Later than witch trials. Is that the intent - that the final version was more brutal? Or do you see this as being the same as the Xen'drik phenomenon?

Don't get me wrong. Setting aside Eberron, I think it's a great piece; you've got some wonderful imagery here. And I like the Burning Beach. But in context of Eberron, I am puzzled by these issues. Are these things (like Sarlonan humans in the time of the giants) reflected in Dragons of Eberron?

Shoot. I screwed up on the elves. Should only be humans. In my original manuscript it was giants, but for some reason I didn't want to go with giant sized stuff and decided to go for a smaller look. I shoulda just stuck with humans then. Nice catch, Smug.

The humans I imagine would possess very little technological know how (being not yet evolved to an Age of Exploration as you pointed out) sort of playing in a wonderland created for them by the dragons and their potent magic.

Yeah, by invited I sort of meant "taken by dragon gods and deposited in a paradise" I didn't mean it to come off so "Hey buddy wanna live in our city"

Thanks for catching me on this Smug. Maybe giants was a better way to go, in which case gentle readers you may want to alter it that way...giant effigies and deathshriekers...that's messed up.

The Du'Rashka Tul is the end product of the experimental work conducted in Vreen...so yeah, Vreen's curse is different, more subtle and insidiuos, not yet the homicidal rage inducing madness that was unleashed on the giants. Also, it is a lingering effect and therefore much weaker, and therefore also a little more sibilant.

Nic, being electronic in format, is it still eligible for revisions?

Actually, I think elves works fine, only the mention of Aerenal doesn't. Just assume the elves are from Xen'drik and you've got no real problems.

You'd think it would be. I thought that was one of the 'hidden' benefits of the new magazine format. Fans sort of 'proofread' articles and send their input to WotC, who can then fix any mistakes found before it gets collected into PDF format.

But this is a very minor glitch in the article, one easily ignored.

I had only asked in case Nic (or is it Nick?) had some additional notes he wanted to include to clarify the article some more. After reading his comments about originally having giants, but then changing to humans and elves, and then Aerenal elves becoming Xen'drik elves, I thought there was more to the details that he might have wished to convey within the article. If it's just a matter of removing the reference to Aerenal, I can cope.

Still, others who read the article but not this thread might see that reference as a gross inconsistency, and requesting the removal of the reference to Aerenal would'nt require much.

This is very good point Amaril. Let me email the powers that be and see if the change can be made. Thanks for chiming in my man. I'll get on this!
