Letters of Credit? [Archive] - Wizards Community

11-10-06, 03:13 PM How much are letters of credit worth? I'm running the Grasp of the Emerald Claw and I'm to give the PCs a letter of credit, but it never specifies an amount.

Any help would be most appreciated! Thanks

Letters of credit are worth whatever you need them to be worth. Honestly.
I'd say take a look at the DMG (pgs 51-55, particularly the tables on p51) and award the players an amount appropriate to their levels.

11-11-06, 09:45 PM Letters of Credit are basically checks. You specify an amount to be taken from your Kundarak bank account, and who can redeem the letter for actual coins.

11-11-06, 09:55 PM Keep in mind that the higher the "amount" of the letter of credit the more expensive it should be due to more comprehensive/redundant counterfeit measures. You also have to find a "bank" or treasury that's willing to honor it or has the funds to be able to - smaller/more provincial holds may not have access to the funds.

Note, not all letters of credit need be issued by Kundarak.

11-12-06, 12:14 AM No, but if its a Kundark letter of cred, you're garunteed that it will be honored at any kundark backed bank, essentially no questions asked. They'll do all the proper checks to be sure its real, and that the person in question actually has that much to give to you. But other than that, as long as they've got the cash, they'll give it to you. If you've got a really big one, they may ask you to wait a few days while they gather that much at once.

11-12-06, 05:02 PM I treat letters of credit in four ways.

1) A fixed amount as a check.
2) A blank check.
3) An ATM card with which one can withdraw money.
4) A credit card used to bill the provider of the letter of credit.
