| Edymnion07-30-05, 03:01 AM | If I loose a level (such as from raise dead) how many action points to I have now that I have dropped a level?Look at the table in the book for the maximum number of AP available for that level. Subtract however many AP you have already used before your level drain. What you have left is how many AP you should have. If you have 6 AP max, use 2 of them, then lose a level to where your new max is 5, thats 5 max points, minus 2 used, for a total of 3 AP available. |

What you have left is how many AP you should have. If you have 6 AP max, use 2 of them, then lose a level to where your new max is 5, thats 5 max points, minus 2 used, for a total of 3 AP available. The problem with this is that if you are a level 6 fighter (8 AP) and you loose a level due to death taking you back to level 5 fighter (7 AP). When you die and loose a level, you are supposed to loose everything you got for gaining the level (HP, BAB, saves, skill points, feats, class abilities) and go back to what you were at level 5 with an XP total half way between level's 5 and 6. If you go according to the RAW for non-action point campaing settings in the PHB, nothing you have, now that you are level 5 again, has anything to do with what you had when you were level 6. In fact, according to the rules when you regain level 6 it doesn't even have to be a level in the same class you had the last time you were level 6. If you loose every thing you got for gaining level 6 then that should logicly mean that you loose all the action points you gained for ataining level 6. The problem with this is now that you are level 5 again, how many action points do you have? I don't think the number of action points you spent while at level 6 should factor into the number of action points you have now that you are back at level 5. Nothing else in the game functions that way. |

They lose access to their 6th level pool, obviously, but do they get a replenished 5th level pool instead? Or if it does not replenish, do they once again have access to same pool they had at 5th (i.e., if the artificer in question had 25xp left in his reserve when he leveled up to six, would he regain access to that 25xp now that he's 5th level again?). Since losing a level is a steep price to pay for accessing that 25xp again, I'd allow it in my games. Likewise, if the de-leveled PC had any leftover action points from his previous level (i.e., he still had 2ap before leveling up), I'd rule that he regains access to those 2ap. OTOH, given that the PC is already at a disadvantage, I might replenish the AP pool in order to give the character a fighting chance. Eh, I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. :) Ryan |

So you keep what you had and don't change it. When you get level up you get more AP again. |

So if I am at level 6 (8AP) and don't use any befor I die, when I get raised and come back as a level 5 character I end up with more action points than a character of my level is normally allowed? Also, say my 6th level feat was heroic spirit which changes the number of AP I get for the level, (making my AP for level 6 10), do those extra AP go away? What if I spent 2 of my AP prior to death (the extra I gained from the feat), but I still have more than my new level allows? |
| ekomega07-31-05, 01:34 AM | I never said I had all the answers, I just said the answer was in the ECS. I'll try and answer your questions, based on what I quoted. So if I am at level 6 (8AP) and don't use any befor I die, when I get raised and come back as a level 5 character I end up with more action points than a character of my level is normally allowed? Apparently. That's what the book says. Also, say my 6th level feat was heroic spirit which changes the number of AP I get for the level, (making my AP for level 6 10), do those extra AP go away? What if I spent 2 of my AP prior to death (the extra I gained from the feat), but I still have more than my new level allows? Well, since you lose the feat by returning from 6th to 5th, I would say those extra AP from the feat go away. If you spent the two AP the feat gives you, putting you back at the standard 8 AP, I guess it's an arbitrary call. From the spirit of the rule, I believe you are not supposed to lose any action points you have remaining. So I'd allow that person who had 10, but used 2, to still have 8 when they lost the level and went from 6th to 5th. But that isn't clearly stated. |
