What about a Lightning Elemental in the ring of an Airship?

Has this ever been discussed?

just curious.

Already been done. Many of the smaller ships use lightning elementals for their rings, and some of the larger ones have secondary rings/pods for maneuvering that use lightning/air elementals.

Heh, cool... that's what I was wanting to know... any clue on a link to it? or how I can find it?

what the heck is a lightning elemental anyway?

the redheaded stepchild of a fire elemental and an air elemental... though I'm quite sure neither parents approved of the union...

He's probably thinking of an air elemental.

Huh. I thought maybe a lightening elemental would be a paraelemental (as described in the Manual of the Planes), but it turns out that the Fire/Air paraelemental is actually Smoke. So that's a no-go. Even checked in the variant cosmologies section, and all I could find there were the elemental plane of Wood and Cold.

So has anyone considered comming up with an Electricity Elemental? Or an Elemental Plane Electric? That would probably be the first step in solving our dilema about airships...

I think a lighting Paraelemental is from Positive and Air.

A lightning elemental is a 4/1 red Elemental with haste costing :r:3 ;)

More seriously (though still not serious) I'd be more interested in what an airship powered by a bound "Ooze Elemental" (which I've heard about but not seen) would look like. :)

I thought the elemental plane of air encompassed lightning?

Also; how about a storm elemental?

The last attempt to bind a Storm Elemental resulted in the loss of several Zil lives and several hundred Galifars in damage.

LOL wonderful conversation... but back to the original question, where can I find the discussion on using alternative elementals in airships and skiffs, anyone have a clue?

Only place I've seen any rules concerning airship construction was in the Explorer's Handbook.

Ah, but the gnomes of Zil and the Drow " occasionaly use bound storm elementals to power vehicles and magic items, a tricky endeaver given the elmentals tempremental dispositions",
its qute possible to bind one to a ships elemental ring but of course there would be a few problems controlling it and maybe the small possibility of it going wrong.

I'd like to see something like a Lightning Elemental. Or barring that, a Storm Elemental.

Because then you could use Elemental Binding to bind one to a Lute or Mandolin, to use it's power to amplify and alter the sound..

...You could call it a Lightning Mandolin. :D

Or with a combined Ooze and Lightning elemental airship, you're burnin' up the quarter mile

LOL wonderful conversation... but back to the original question, where can I find the discussion on using alternative elementals in airships and skiffs, anyone have a clue?Basically, it doesn't matter. What kind of elemental you use has no bearing on the ship in any way. Fire just got chosen as the default because, frankly, it looks the coolest. Lightning because it looks cool. Doesn't matter what you pick, it doesn't change anything but how it looks.

And yes, Lightning is the paraelemental from the boarders of the air and positive energy planes, in the traditional wheel cosmology. In Eberron, it would just come from... whatever plane is linked to air in Eberron. I never did memorize all those...

It does have to be an elemental, right, so no demons :D ?

Yes, it has to be an elemental, so you could bind a high enough level elemental savant to the craft.

Either I'm old or you all are way too young :)

The Positive/Negative mix elementals are called Quasi-elementals.

Lightning is between Air and Pos. (The thunder alone can shake apart anything over time, all by itself!). This could be seen as the source of both sonic and electrical energies.

Radiance is between Fire and Pos (Light and Heat without Fuel...home of all Prismatic effects, Sun, and Light)

Crystal is between Earth and Pos. (you could make a case that this should be Force, if you were inclined - solidity without mass). Gemstone central!

Steam is between Water and Pos (I would probably elevate this to Plasma...Water in the 4th state of matter)

Vacuum is between Air and Negative (Pressure w/o Air, fun!)

Ash is between Fire and Neg (sucks away heat)

Salt is between Water and Negative (destroys water)

Dust is between Earth and Negative. (effectively, the home of Disintegration effects!)

I love, loath, these insights. Thanks for letting us know how things are.

The Positive/Negative mix elementals are called Quasi-elementals.Yup, you've got the true elementals like Earth and Fire, the Para-Elementals that are a combination of two true elements, the quasi-elementals which are a true element and either positive or negative energy...

All of which don't apply in Eberron, since ding dong the great wheel is dead! :D
