| Caul06-30-04, 10:25 PM | So, I find myself wanting (call me strange if you like) info concerning the Lightning rail. Specs for one (aside from the 30 mph speed), maps of coaches, different styles of coaches (cargo, passenger, armored, etc.) and also rail distances between major stops and travel time at average rate of speed. All of these things would be tremendously useful as a DM. Anyone else agree? Web enhancement perhaps, or is there more info coming out in supplements? |
| Arisen Phoenix07-01-04, 01:34 AM | I've made up a rail schedule using the best distance estimates I could get, and assuming the Services listing of 30mph was the correct one. It's available at http://www.faerealm.com/Fantasy/Eberron/railschedule.html Enjoy. |
| kildaere00707-01-04, 11:38 AM | Great chart, But I think you need to recheck your distances....using a string (as to get the bends in the track and better calc through switches and across maps) I get 500 miles from Sharn to Wroat (not 375). I thought that maybe you just measured as the crow flies so I checked Sharn to the Breland/Aundair Switch (track split) and get a "straight" distance of about 750 miles and an actual distance of about 833 miles (both are far off from your listed 640). I think your scale was off (remember each "tic" on the listed scale is about 166.667 miles) Great chart though, I will definately use it (when you fix the distances ;) |
| Arisen Phoenix07-02-04, 12:01 AM | I'll check distances a bit closer. Those were just estimates based on following the rail line twisting a small (cheap) retractible rule to my whims. Also, what with the nation maps all having differing scales (grr), I probably miscalculated somewhere. (Actually, I can pretty much guestimate that I got something wrong, as it's more than 2500mi. from Sharn to Krona Peak according to the Khorvaire map, and less than that in my chart...) It was all done at about 1am after a long day. I'll be revising it over the weekend as a get my starter adventure in order. |
| Arisen Phoenix07-02-04, 12:47 AM | Some of my measurements were just plain wrong, and others were calculated with the wrong scale (I really do hate the differing scales on these maps...) Teaches me to do this at such an unholy hour. Sharn - Wroat is actually 580mi. I've corrected every single entry on the chart, double-checking both the non-straight-line distance and the scaling. The new results are up in the same place. |

| Sereno07-02-04, 09:35 AM | Thanks for this! I think it will also help in my game to restructure the fees. If it truly costs this much to ride the L.R., few can afford it and that makes it highly unlikely that anyone would have bothered to create it in the first place. It should be expensive, yes, but not out of the reach of all but the richest rulers of nations. How often do you think the king of Breland needs to ride the L.R.? For something to be profitable, it has to be accessible to the most people. I can see different classes (just like modern airlines or the old rail days where rich folks had their own luxury cars) but if the middle-class can't ever ride (except by spending all the money they are ever likely to make) this would never be of real value to the builders and the maintenance crews. |
| Caul07-02-04, 12:33 PM | You have to keep in mind that the listed distances are for the major rail stop cities. Relatively, the rail is inexpensive for those travelling shorter distances, which is doable because no one knows (purposefully I would assume) how many settlements exist in the nations, and there is no reason why settlements would not spring up along the rail. |
| Iver Gearsham07-02-04, 06:13 PM | So you hop two towns up stop earn some money ride up a few more and in a week your there. I think I heard storys like that from my grandfather. It should be way cheaper for cargo and you could always Hobo it. |
