Well, this was originally posted in the magic, fluff, cosmology and wossname forums, in a post titled "how would this work?". But due to insane popularity of one idea(thanks evilmonster!), I decided to put it here: I give you... the living permanency spell!

Artector's version: a good one, it would be harmless at first apart from, you know, slams and such. Everytime it has a spell thrown its way though, it gains a special effect at the DM's discretion(say, fireball-fire shield or Cure-fast healing, you choose). Thus an older spell would be more powerful.

My crazed version(the one that evilmonster loved): any spell tossed its way becomes... A LIVING SPELL. Now toss in (quoting me because I'm lazy)awaken it and make it the reason that all these living spells are around, plus possibly add a scheming wizard mastermind of EBILNESS and make the two the reason for the mourning, have fun:D

Enjoy, and take a look at that thread for more ideas on all kinds of interesting living spells!(most of which are answering questions I had, thanks guys!)

Seems like a cool Living Spell. Basically it irritates the hell out of the party until someone tries to cast a spell on it. Then they basically breed a new living spell based on what they cast?

yip! Also good as a plot device.

P.S. thanks for finally answering!

I like it and am planning on running a campaign that will be entering the Mournlands on multiple occasions. Mind if I borrow this concept for my campaign?

Go ahead... MAKE MY DAY!

err...yeah, enough with stupid quotes.

So, you're going to take it? I'm honored:cloud9: I hope you like it...works best as a plot device:)

Another good plot device LS: living ressurection, floats over stuff in the mournland, randomly bringing it to life. Here come two sides, one is a noble who wants it captured and used as a fall back "oops I died, but not for long!" thing against assasination, and another is a marut, who wants it very very dead.

have fun!

Ah yes, for added effect, unless you want to make it a force of nature/random wandering monster instead of a villain, be sure to awaken it. Oh, and which version of it will you be using?

EDIT: keep the res LS a force of nature, awaken the permanency.

I plan on using your version.

A few questions on your version of the living permanency:

1) Does the spell affect the living permanency before it generates another living spell?

2) Wouldn't attempting to awaken the Living Permanency generate a living Awaken? (which could be fun in it's own right)

3) If, say, a living fireball smacks a living permanency, does another living fireball "spawn" (for lack of a better term)?

And, IMO, an Awakened Living Permanency seems like a Lord of Blades type figure for living spells.

So, what happens when you cast Dispell Magic on it?
cog_and_taz

09-12-06, 08:09 PM
Thanks for the support guys.

@gladius

1: you can use either or both

2:yes you're right, it's pretty much the LoB.

3:awaken spells? only if you cast one at it, but I don't see why you would, and it can turn the ability off at will.

4: I wonder what hellcow thinks about this, will I be zapped with holy lightning for having funny ideas?

5: dispel magic? weeeelll, I rather not think of a living DS, but there's three things that could happen...

6: two living spells against eachother? hmm... either nothing unusual would happen or it would give me a headache :P

A: it gains an anti-magic field against all enemy spells(useless, as if nothing happened, they still get turned into a living spell for getting into the field, either that or it can lower the field at will.

B:if it isn't some how indirectly magic immune(or you could make it its weakness), it would take damage like dispel magic/banish or whatever on an elemental/outsider.

C: IMO it would cry at you for being mean to an original idea:P

Glad you guys like it, have fun!:)

Oh, and don't bother asking me, just take it if you feel like it, although you may want to ask artector for use of his version.

I always liked the idea of a Baleful Polymorph Living Spell as it would turn all the pcs in squirrels. it brings the nuts back to a combat.

Squirrels!! Squirrels!!

Nice one bleu, a random encounter rather than a BBEG, but still nice. Any more ideas/wowthisissoawesomes/constructive criticism etc.?

How about a living Reanimate?
They act like zombies, but they don't take damage from positive energy, so they present an interesting problem.

Once the PCs figure it out, it's a potential resource to compete over. There are a lot of fairly intact corpses in the Mournland, and a lot of people in New Cyre who would go to great lengths to get a family member back. If the body can be found, delivered to the Living Reanimate, and retreived (without being destroyed in the process) a comparatively simple Raise Dead can bring the person back to full life.

Of course, more traffic in the Mournland means more potential victims (and valuable salvage!) for the Lord of Blades.

While it's a neat thought.... it doesn't follow the living spell rules (as found in MM3). Now, if you want a living spell that will really frustrate your party, use a living Scramble True Position (Tome of Magic). ;)
cog_and_taz

09-16-06, 08:54 PM
You see, I can't afford any supplements, so that's out:weep: thanks anyway though tyryn. Living reanimate=living ressurection that I was talking about, but possibly better, certainly more details. Also, maruts would hate its guts.

Finally , the living spell rules: I'm sorry, I'm not too familiar with them. But I reckon if the rules get in the way of an idea you like, sod them and make your own:)

I wouldn't post stuff unless I didn't want to share it. Anything I post is free game, unless I specifically say so, even then, there's a passable chance I won't know.

Ahh, cool.

Living Permanancy in either form would make a good plot device. Capture it and keep throwing Cure spells on it...

Nasty! Living contingency, now that's out, but there's loads of nasty stuff you could do with LP. Also, yes, iw would have to be a plot device, random encounter just doesn't work... Oh, and you could have some magic-related god(think boccob/wee jas etc.) be hugely upset by something that powerful, and ask the adventurers to go and whack it, similar to the living res/marut situation.

Except in Eberron the gods are mostly removed. So that's doubtful.

However a Dragon might read something in the Prophecy and indirectly get the PC's to destroy it.

Excellent! My pc's are just about to have to fight their way through "the field of Living Spells", a creation of mine that resides on the long lost island of Trebez Sinara. Unfortunately, I can't give out any details yet for fear that one of my players will run across this post. Let's just say that I was having trouble thinking up the exact nature of what they would eventually find in the center. I'm not now.

How about an awakened Living Mordenkainen's Disjuction? It lives to destroy magic items. Or how about the LMD teamed up with an awakened Living Wish? The pair could become unstoppable. :schemes:
cog_and_taz

09-20-06, 09:17 AM
I rather avoid wish, it's just too hard to handle, but thanks. The anti-magic LMD could me cool, but how about this: Living Mordenkainen's magnificient mansion, howl's moving castle anyone?(Not the effect I intended, but I reckon that's how it'll be taken.).

Also, the weird thing above is an apple tree, not a mind flayer on a stick.

Well the new ooze article by Wizards said something about giving an ooze intelligence with the fiendish template. Makes awaken totally unnecessary.

09-24-06, 06:59 AM
Living Awaken

Now take this through the a forested area, losts of animals, vermin, etc, the Ooze Awakens them all, and they start to form into a large organized band of Animals that seek out to hunt and destroy the hunters.... scary huh ....
cog_and_taz

09-24-06, 09:47 AM
Thanks thwyv, I forgot bout that. On the other hand, it's 3 int, which is too little for its role.

Also, thruxus, that is TOO NASTY, stop it:P .

Nice idea though, commencing yoinkification(Yes, I made it up).
Thwyvylyn

09-24-06, 04:08 PM
Psuedo-Natural Template should do it too. And once said ooze has an int score it can be boosted.
