I'm looking for an appropriate excuse for a large-ish festival in Sharn ...sometime fairly-shortly before Wildnight.

I know there are tons of reasons out there... just looking for possibly a fun or interesting one :) Was planning to have a kind of general festival feel with lots of competitions, from combat to archery to performance (music, art, etc)...

Any suggestions welcome. :) ...to add some flavor.

First, Wildnight isn't ringing any bells, so I'm not sure about the time of the year.

If you have the Sharn sourcebook, there are some festivals listed near the beginning.

Easiest suggestion if you are in need of a festival occasion is to say that one of the higher-ups in the Brelish government is visiting and it's in his/her honor.

Must be that time of year. This is like the third time I've recommended this book to someone on one of these threads...

Tournaments, Faires, and Taverns. Do a Google search for it. You can buy it in electronic format (pdf) for around $5. Worth every penny.

As a suggestion outside of buying new material, I'd say make it relate to Wildnight, in the way that Lent is related to Mardi Gras. For example, perhaps there is a celebration of peace and order that lasts right up to Wildnight, and actually feeds its fury by forcing participants to withhold their outbursts right up until Wildnight.

As a hook, perhaps a few zealots can go off the deep end after unsuccessfully trying to supress their normally outrageous behavior during pre-Wildnight "Lent." They could be cult worshippers of Xoriat, or...even better! They could be Inspired Wilders that come unglued, and must be stopped by any means necessary. Wary adventurers and other competent people of Sharn have all left town before the Lent (to avoid the chaos of Wildnight), leaving only the ineffectual town guard and your merry band of PCs to deal with them.
