I'm looking for some ideas for James Bond type death traps, not the usual -open-the-box-with-out-checking-for-traps-and-boom kind. but the sort an evil mastermind would set the heroes in. They should be clever, make use of a skill or two, work with the rules (even if loosly), and have a neat way out all while appearing to offer a horrable death in a given number of rounds.

Play the PS2 game God of War. You'll have all of the ideas you'll ever need.

How about this- in order to escape, a certain key or tool is needed. What isn't readily apparent is that there's a permanent Rope Trick spell in the chamber, and the key/tool is in the rope trick. Pretty much the only way to get out is Detecting magic or seeing the invisible. Alternatively, the rope trick is the only place to hide from an imminent explosion or crushing.

Oh, and BTW, the most sadistic thing you can ever do to PCs is to have bad guys hit-and-run on them and then hide in a rope trick, then come out later to hit them again. Wash and repeat.

I know there's a long compilation of cunning traps somewhere on the regular D&D boards...

For more crunch heavy stuff on large scale "encounter traps" check out Secrets of Xen'drik (I think - currently AFB). There was a whole section about using the rules to create large room sized traps and it even has some examples. Not so much with the ideas, but solid rules for implementing the sort of thing you're talking about.
