| DrStalker08-26-07, 10:12 AM | I'm trying to find a few pics of Eberron-style airships but having trouble tracking them down. Are there any good pics online, or any particular Eberron books that have images? (I can access a lot of Eberron books, but don't own them myself so browsing is a little tricky!) |
| Cavienn08-26-07, 12:19 PM | The Campaign Setting has a picture of one in the equipment chapter. Explorer's Handbook has a map of one on page 32. Pictures on page 78. Dragonmarked has a picture of one on page 6, as well as page 49 and 51. Hope that helps! |
| mtlgamer08-26-07, 03:46 PM | Not an Eberron airship, but a cool link to a book about a Dirigible and pirates, written for young people. (take the tour of the Aurora) http://www.airborn.ca/newspaper01.htm |
| barrymcw08-26-07, 04:51 PM | I haven't seen the movie Stardust or the graphic novel it's based on, but I'm pretty sure there are sky pirates in it. Maybe try and track down some images from that? |
| N3palm08-27-07, 03:32 AM | A while ago, someone (I'm failing to remember the name) posted 3D models of Airships. They are very nicely done: http://search.deviantart.com/?section=browse&qh=boost%3Apopular+age_sigma%3A24h+age_s cale%3A5&q=Eberron+Airship http://meloncov.deviantart.com/gallery/ His (or Her) name on deviant art is Meloncov |
| Charles Phipps08-27-07, 06:18 AM | Final Fantasy is your friend. http://www.geocities.com/tommysdiablo7/airship1.jpg and http://ffworld.my100megs.com/psx_ff9_screenshot06.jpg and http://www.tabletsofdestiny.com/ff7/highwind.jpg Skies of Arcadia works too http://www.armchairempire.com/images/Reviews/Dreamcast/skies-of-arcadia/skies-of-arcadia-1.jpg http://www.rpgfan.com/reviews/soalegends/soal-1b.jpg |
| Garden_State_Gamer08-27-07, 12:30 PM | In response to Mr. Phipps: While those are all ships and they are in the air, I feel that they don't quite capture the feal of Airships found in Eberron. The DnD Dragonshard game had some airships in it as well, for CGI references. There's also one that makes an appearance in the Eyes of the Lich Queen module, but I wouldn't consider it the best graphical reference. The key piece that I've observed is the ring of elemental energy that surrounds the ship. The rest of the ship can be pretty much up for grabs. |
| Charles Phipps08-27-07, 09:26 PM | While those are all ships and they are in the air, I feel that they don't quite capture the feal of Airships found in Eberron. Well, for me, I think its important to downgrade the importance of official art because sometimes it doesn't reflect the setting despite the fact it's in a book. The question is "Does the work invoke a suitable feeling of awe in the player characters?" The key piece that I've observed is the ring of elemental energy that surrounds the ship. The rest of the ship can be pretty much up for grabs. God, I hate those things. They're utterly distracting and ruin the feel for a lot of airships. All the other elements are completely ignored in favor of the (erroneous) implication the Ring is the only artificer based part of the ship. Airships should, always, first and foremost be made clear to be massively complex things that no player character in their right mind could duplicate without months of labor with lots of specialists. The Elemental Ring is a vital part, like the engine, but ultimately unimportant without all the rest. I officially removed them from my campaigns completely when my players kept asking how they could bind an elemental to make their ships fly. Thus far, there's little change other than they still have to wrestle with the "power source" (which is, of course, an elemental) |
| Garden_State_Gamer08-28-07, 02:06 PM | I was talking pure aesthetics anyway; anything else that makes the ship go would be inside the fascade. IMHO, propellers and balloons are a little too grounded in real world technology to work visually with the style of Eberron. The webbed flipper/wings from Skies of Arcadia could work though. |
| Ryuu_Tenshi08-29-07, 01:24 AM | Some more Final Fantasy (though some of these may be too technological for some tastes) http://www.hardwired.hu/img/hir2/ff_xii_2.jpe http://www.finalfantasytr.com/images/tasitlar/airship10.jpg http://www.chocoboheaven.com/mc/displayimage.php?pid=99&fullsize=1 |
| DrStalker08-30-07, 03:06 AM | I like the sleek, fast look of Eberron windships; a regular ship (complete with sails) that happens to be floating in the air looks wrong; they have no ability to see what is underneath them, which strikes me as a critical weakness, and without the different viscosity medium below (i.e.water) it's not possible to use sails to control a ships direction. I'm surprised there isn't more Eberron airship art in the Eberron books, but I have enough now. Thanks everyone who posted pics! |
| Adamaro2308-31-07, 03:36 AM | http://www.wizards.com/magic/images/cardart/PS/Skyship_Weatherlight.jpg Eberron's airships always reminded me of this, except with the ring. I personally don't care either way about the ring as long as it's being powered by magic and not technology. |
| Vinny_the_Elf08-31-07, 07:25 AM | DDO is your best bet. Its set in Stormreach and there arer House Lyrandar Airships in the city and another location or two. Awesome to see when you play the game. check the screenshots (http://www.ddo.com/index.php?page_id=66&siid=25) section out. In the screenshot archive the first 2 screenies on the top left are of a House Lyrandar Airship docked/tethered to a platform above the market in Stormreach... the big red thing in one is the market tent. Hope that helps! edit: Ok they aren't the best pics around, but in game you get to walk around on an Airship, before disembarking for an adventure and it looks really cool, especially the bound air elemental whizzing around the ships mid section. |
| Meloncov09-02-07, 09:16 PM | A while ago, someone (I'm failing to remember the name) posted 3D models of Airships. That would be me. Once I finished the dragon I'll likely make another one, this time in a better 3D program and (hopefully) with better results. Whispers of the Vampires blade has a really cool airship design in it that'll be using for inspiration. |
| Tavish09-04-07, 01:10 PM | I didn't see it mentioned, so I suggest you check out the cover art for the Rich Wulf Eberron books: Voyage of the Mourning Dawn, Flight of the Dying Sun, and Rise of the Seventh Moon. The artist is Thomas Thiemeyer. |
| Meloncov09-05-07, 11:33 PM | Here's the image I mentioned earlier: http://www.rottface.com/images/eb_wvb_01.jpg Modeling something based on it should be fun. |
