How do you think the Lord of Blades came to be? Something to to do with the Mourning perhaps?

I imagine he was probably just a warforged who got into self modification honestly.

It's possible that he's a special project that got loose though.

Possibly a mere Warforged with a insanely high charisma who felt like stepping up.

Perhaps a primative warforge taken from Xen'drik, and redesgined as the first of the mass produced models of the current era.

There was mention of such a warforge still exsisting. It had to have it's 'brain' reassembled, and was thought to be something else before it was made whole again.

can't remember in what dragonshard keith brougth that theory but..
i like to think that the LoB is old Boranel's bodyguard that play a major role in the warforged liberation...it makes him a much more interesting character from my point of view... that's the way it is in my campaign, and i sure hope the real identity of the LoB is never revealed...

Actually that wasn't Keith, it's the guy who wrote the Warforged chapter in RoE, who made up Bulwark (the Warforged you are thinking of).

I'm using that one for my Lord of Blades.

My reasoning is that the LOB is probably a heavily modded warforged, possibly a new prototype or...maybe he was a new tweak from Cyre in prototypes. Perhaps he was even a leftover from Xen'drik, whatever he was he was a leader and called his kind together.

I like the whole Aaren d'Cannith & Renegade Mastermaker idea.

Even if it isn't true, I have to say its an interesting idea

Well in Five nations they stat out the LoB as a level 12character who is 5ftr/5Jugger/2arti...so that’s pretty much shoots down any Aaren d'Cannith ideas. Did think it was a neat idea, but before that book came out my buddy always shot down that idea with the idea that it was just a cheesy robot suit and you could still see the eyes. Oh he dose have an 18 charasma...that is very high for a warforged.

Personally I go with "one of the original giant-forged warforged", because if you look at the 5N write-up, he speaks Giant. Most contstructs speak the language of their creator.... hmmmmmmmm :lightbulb

That's not true at all. There is more than one write-up for the Lord of Blades. He can very well be whatever you want him to. The write-up there could even just be a sort of "public perception" of him. "If you want to run the LoB just as he seems, then go for this", basically. However, there's nothing that says he couldn't be Aarren d'Cannith. Frankly I'm quite partial to this idea as well, just because it makes things very interesting.

My theory is that he was a reforged before the the day of morning a close friend of Hatchet. When Hatchet was killed by humans, Blades when mad and vowed to destory all the flesh creatres.

I like the "'Ra's Al Ghul / Batman Begins' Bait & Switch" logic of the Aaren d'Cannith + Renegade Mastermaker theory.

Now all I have to do is figure out how to turn the LoB's creation forge into a walking, talking arcane engine (ie. the Master Mold from the X-Men comics meets Eberron) and I'll have a whole new direction to add to my campaign.

After reading up on what Merrix is allegedly up to in MoE, I've a sinking suspicion that the mastermind behind the LoB may turn out to be Merrix, or possibly that Merrix & Aaren are working in concert somehow.

That will be a project for later on, though.

Right now, I've gotta build my Kalashtar Soulknife for another campaign. I finally get to game for a chance instead of DM.

You don't have to use it, when you don't like the idea. I wouldn't, if i were the DM of our campaign. Only why it's written down in a book, you don't have to use it.

In my game, the Lord of Blades is a concept more than an individual warforged. He is a metaphor that certain warforged used to gather more of their kind to a cause of liberation. A concept of the ideal warforged, confident and free. A master of battle, who can lead his people to find themselves. Conceptually, he was a combination of messiah and Moses with a warforged slant... but the important thing is that he was a concept, not an individual. Kind of a WWLoBD (What Would the Lord of Blades Do).

Since the warforged have started gathering to this concept, however, there are a small number of warforged who have taken on the task of personifying the Lord of Blades. In my game, it is possible to have the Lord of Blades leading an army of Warforged through Karrnath, and simultaneously have the Lord of Blades rallying a group of warforged in the Cogs of Sharn.

In my game there are currently five warforged who have taken on the title of Lord of Blades. They're all part of the same movement, but hold different bases of operations. Bulwark is based in Sharn, Aaren d'Cannith leads the movement in the Mournlands (and is said to be the original LoB), and I also have a LoB in Karrnath, Aundair, and Thrane.

Can't remember where I read this, but somewhere I heard the following theory about LoB.

All newly created warforged emerge from the forge a pretty much blank slate. In their first month of life what they learn determines much of who they are later in their life.

Most Warforged were placed in house Cannith run training camps where they underwent rigorous combat training to prepare them for battle on the front line. This training however can be quite a tiring process for the teachers, and with the last war taxing many of the nations in so many ways, House Cannith thought to streamline this process by having older warforged train the newly created warfored.

Without the human(oid) contact present in the first days of their life, its theorised that some of the last few Warforged produced in the latter days of the war had some degree of resentment ingrained into them.

Continue the cycle of warforged training warforfed and sooner or later you've got a whole resenting made-to-die mentality occuring. Then take one warforged with a whole lot of personality (read: charisma), give him a couple of levels of artificer to self-customise and you've got your own flesh-hating, revolutionary.

Who is Aaren d'Cannith? What books is he mentioned in? This sounds pretty interesting, but I'm new to Eberron and havn't read all the books yet.

He's in the Eberron Campaign Setting book, the main one that is. Read the warforged race section where it talks about the creation forges.
He's the guy who made the first sentient warforged and I believe he's the grandfather or so of the current Merrix d'Cannith. There's an interesting theory that Aaren, angry about what was happening to his warforged, made himself into one (MasterMaker prestige class from Magic of Eberron) and became the Lord of Blades.

The Warforged, Part One (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ebds/20050627a).

An archived Dragonshard article which is a very good starting place to pick up info on Aaren d'Cannith.

Just as a side question, does it ever mention anywere the relative age of Merrix? Or the LoBster? How long has the big Bag o' Bolts been in power? Since around the Day of Mourning, or is he more recent than that?

Just to interject my opinion, I think that something like Argonth, the mobile fortress would fit the requirements. It could be Argonth itself, or something on a smaller scale or larger scale, but irregardless something that is capable of carting around a creation forge and building more forces as it goes, would be valuable.

Just an idea.

EDIT:

Well, his age is speculative, as it says in the Eberron Campaign Setting, that people either believe, he's the first, last, or somewhere in the middle, of Warforged to be created.

However, when it comes to how long he's been in power, he has held a city, a mythical city, I remind you, somewhere in the Mournland since the destruction of Cyre. So, I would guess about two years, give or take.

There have been many theories that suggest there is more than one Lord of Blades. Perhaps a docent of artifact-like power is the true mind of the LoB? Powerful enough to have levels of its own, and an ego score to override almost any who use it.
