| ChaosReigns02-19-08, 01:40 AM | Being new to D&D, what books should I buy to find out about the lore of Eberron (the faiths, races, history etc.)? Is it all in the campaign setting or are there other books I need to buy? Thanks in advance. :) |
| IMAL02-19-08, 04:10 AM | Along with rulebooks and supplements, it wouldn't hurt to buy some of the novels. Those give a more personal perspective on world events and history. for supplements, I'd say get Faith of Eberron and Races of Eberron, Player's Guide to Eberron, and Dragonmarked. I'm sure there's a buttload of other supplements out there, like City of Towers, and the Stormreach book coming out. Those give more in-depth information about the particular area of interest, though, but tend to provide information about those "links that make the chain". The Campaign Setting gives a pretty decent amount of information, but only as much as they could fit into the book. |
| Amaril02-19-08, 07:18 AM | If you want bare essentials rather than a vast collection of materials, I'd start with Player's Guide to Eberron or Eberron Campaign Setting. I gave priority to PGtE only because it's simply lore, which is what you asked for, and doesn't contain the mechanics that govern the setting as a whole. If you are going to actually play in Eberron, I suggest getting the ECS without a doubt. |
| Edymnion02-19-08, 09:03 AM | First up, the free stuff, the Dragonshard articles: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/archeb/ds For books: Eberron Campaign Setting (Duh) Players Guide to Eberron Faiths of Eberron Dragonmarked I do *NOT* recommend Races of Eberron for flavor and lore. It was intentionally aimed at the generic, non-Eberron crowd, and IMO, had much of it's content watered down. Its good for feats and the like, but when it comes to lore, forget about it. Read the dragonshard or the PGtE entry for that race for far better information. Oh, and ignore the sidebars in PGtE, they're awful as well. The material on the main pages is gold though. |

While you might not agree with it, it at least presents ideas that can be customized or changed. Don't ignore Races of Eberron entirely, either. There are some decent things in there, especially the chapter on Kalashtar which is very well written. |
| Sakon2202-19-08, 03:09 PM | I found the RoE incredibly useful for seeing the psychology of the new races. Much more in depth than the information on them in the ECS. As for history I would recommend the...crap, I forgot its name but it detailed the Last War. |
| Paulon02-19-08, 06:30 PM | Forge of War. |
| Amaril02-19-08, 06:43 PM | Forge of War. I'm gonna disagree. Forge of War only details one aspect of Eberron and it's history. |
| Edymnion02-20-08, 09:21 AM | I'm gonna disagree. Forge of War only details one aspect of Eberron and it's history. And even then manages to get large sections of it wrong *cough*Thrane*cough*. |
| Amaril02-20-08, 09:26 AM | And even then manages to get large sections of it wrong *cough*Thrane*cough*.You know, I dismissed that section so readily -- which takes a lot for me to do -- that I forgot all about it. :) |
