I recently ran a Halloween themed session and one of my PC got bitten by a lycanthrop (yes I know they were all killed off but I brought a couple back for story plot reasons) and he has a dragon mark (mark of finding). Now was I wrong for giving him control of his lycanthropy during full moons because of the Dragonmark?

Well... What was your reason for giving him control of the Lycanthropy on the premise that he has a Dragonmark?

(I personally think that a person suffering from a curse should never have control of it, becuase the players in my games would look at it like a gift, not a curse.)

Not all the lycanthropes were killed. Just most of them. Some survived the Silver Flame, some hid in Khyber or fled to Sarlona or Xen'drik, and there are still plenty of them on some other planes.

And no, you were not wrong. You are the DM.

Now, it would be a lot better if you had a reason to give him control of his lycanthropy because of a dragonmark. There is nothing in the rules saying that dragonmarked individuals are affected differently than normal people. So if it does in your game, you should have a reason why, and be consistant about it.

I could understand it better if that was the Mark of Handling

Or you could give him a bonus to his Control Shape skill because he has a dragonmark. I would personally use this, because it gives the player the opportunity to use its power once in a while, but he'll think twice about using it too often.

Player: Oh yes, I turn into hybrid form
DM: Make a Control Shape check
Player: Oops, I rolled 1
DM: You effectively turn into a wereboar, but bad for you, your basic instincts take over your judgement and attack everyone in sight...

Thanks everyone for the great responses and advice. I am still kind of new to D&D, I started playing in Baghdad in between missions. I do have a reason for why the player has control of the Lycanthropy, not just having the Dragonmark. Thanks for everything I really enjoy the boards and reading everyones Ideas and it is cool that I get to be a part of it every now and then.

Good on you, risking life and limb to keep the country safe! :D

Yes, this is a bit spammy, so I'll say something on topic.

By the RAW, people with dragonmarks gain no bonuses towards controling lycanthropy. However, natural lycanthropes can control their shapes, and have a higher LA. I would consider making the character take levels in the werewhatever template class (found here (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/arch/sp).

Generally, if you fail a skill roll by 5 or more, bad stuff happens. Unless he's got an insane control shape skill bonus, a 1 = bad stuff. Plus, rule 0.

Anyway, the DM is never wrong. He's just a bastard sometimes. Now, you've given this PC a huge boon. The real question is, are you all still having fun? If so, then you've got no worries.

Otherwise, you may have to switch tactics. You've already given the player a new toy. Taking it away will only cause dissension. The game is, after all, about the group having fun, not one guy making a story. So throw some challenges at the PC. Silver Flamers, once they find out, will begin to come out in force, armed with all sorts of silver and belladona-laced weaponry that was still around since the Inquisition. Place restrictions that the character would not know about. Perhaps lycanthropes in your game cannot enter certain manifest zones, or are allergic to positive energy (the PC takes heavy damage during combat, so uncorks one of their healing potions and chugs. Suddenly his skin feels *really* itchy. -2 to all rolls for the next half hour due to distraction. That kinda thing.

Oh yeah, no problem. One more thing. Did this wereboar have family? The "Pack" might come looking for the people responsible for their favored son/daughter's death. ^^

Ya know... I know where you got the itchy idea from Thanis... *grumbles*

From my understanding of were- things, once they learn to "control" their shape they can always do this. A varient rule I might suggest is maybe they can only use the ablility to change during a full moon, and not during any other time. Or consider the number of moons on Eberron... who's to say what effects different moons in different phases could have? Maybe they can only attempt to control their shape during the time the moon they got bitten under is in the sky and attempts to learn how to shift, or shifting period under other moons causes interesting mishaps.

For a little side note Thanis: "No, I am not a werewolf that drank a healing potions, the paladin in the party failed his remove diesease attempt and I got the chicken pox from that town girl that tried to sell me flowers!"

Hmmm chicken pox  Well that was the first thing I relaied to the PC was that you have control only during full moons. But I like the Idea of having him take on different affects for different moons Yhank :D
