| ahiman01-14-07, 04:17 AM | So, is this possable or is it just power game. I ask because I am playing a vandalis wizard and I have a pet that is a magebread cat. thanks |
| Shady31401-14-07, 04:29 AM | Mage BREAD familiar? Yummy. Mage bread just like Grandma used to make. The ECS says it isn't possible I believe. Or does it just say that for animal companions? On the other hand 5N has a feat that let's you do just that and has some pretty good flavor text about the bear riders of Breland. If your DM allows that feat for a magebred animal companion it wouldn't be a big deal to let it also apply to a familiar. Especially a Vadalis wizard. Plus familiars have nowhere near the combat ability of an animal companion. I'd let it fall under the purview of Imp. Familiar myself. So technically I don't think so but it's not a big deal and your DM will probably let you. |
| ahiman01-14-07, 04:32 AM | sorry for the spelling its late here. but thanks for that. |
| The White Sorcerer01-14-07, 08:07 AM | On the other hand 5N has a feat that let's you do just that and has some pretty good flavor text about the bear riders of Breland. Really? I thought there was supposed to be a feat like that, but it was cut. |
| Syltorian01-14-07, 08:16 AM | I don't believe there is a feat for this, and even the Vadalis Beastkeeper PrC (Dragonmarked) allows only Special Mounts/Animal Companions... but like Shady, I would allow a wizard to take a magebred familiar, with the Improved Familiar feat. It's nice flavour, not a big advantage in the rules, and a part of what magebred is all about - more tricks - doesn't have any importance for a familiar anyway. I might even consider allowing a Vadalis wizard to take a magebred familiar as a sort of "racial house substitution level", at no cost. It's their House's trademark, after all. |
| Shady31401-14-07, 10:11 AM | Really? I thought there was supposed to be a feat like that, but it was cut. Ah yes you're right. It wasn't actually a feat. An appropriately leveled druid or ranger could choose a magebred brown bear instead of a polar bear if they were from Breland. Also they could choose a magebred ghost tiger instead of a dire lion. The justification for this is little more than Breland paid Vadalis for a lot of magebred animals and became well known for it. If you're going to accept that justification there's no reason at all Vadalis themselves shouldn't get magebred companions and familiars. |

Also they could choose a magebred ghost tiger instead of a dire lion. Interestingly, this doesn't mean Brelish druids or rangers can get magebred bears or ghost tigers, since their list of available animal companions includes neither polar bears nor dire lions. |

If so that is hilarious because I got it right from the 5N book when I went back to check on it! I guess the intent was to replace similarly powered creatures with magebred ones they just missed that particular fact. |
| Edymnion01-15-07, 11:59 AM | Its going to depend on how your DM runs familiars. I, for example, require you to actually have the creature you want to make into a familiar, and have it be on friendly terms with you before you can bind it. Other DMs take a more video game-ish approach and say your familiar just pops out of thin air whenever you complete the ritual. If your DM says you have to have the base animal first, then yes, I would say magebred familiars could be a valid option. If they say that it just pops out of thin air, then no, its not something you could do (since magebred animals specifcally have to be bred by house vadalis to have those traits, it isn't normal). |
| TacoClone01-15-07, 12:35 PM | On the subject of magebred, I was thinking of throwing in a Magebred Spiretop Dragon for part of an adventure. Considering it's a 'Dragon' type and not an 'Animal' I'm not sure if it's within the rules, but I wanted it to have escaped a crazy Vadalis caster of some sort be doing experiments with Magebreeding. I do plan to have the Dragon stick around after the adventure, but I as the DM would have control over it and it would kind of just be like a party pet. NOTE: I'd not lower its Int down to 2 because that would harm it and make it dumb... |
| eehamburg01-15-07, 03:50 PM | can we get back to mage bread though? what does it taste like? :heehee |
| goblin_pride01-15-07, 03:56 PM | can we get back to mage bread though? what does it taste like? :heehee A bit like chicken, I would guess. |
| Kreistor201-15-07, 04:07 PM | The process of creating a magebred creature is undescribed. No one has created a feat called, "Create Magebred Creature" and I hope they don't. They capped the number of skills in 3.5 because in 3.0 they kept adding more, which meant the players knew less and less about the world, but did not gain skill pints to make it up. Crafting feats are going the same direction. Wizards are able to create less and less. Eberron was pretty cruel in this, by adding Craft Schema and Bind Elemental, and there may be a couple others I'm not remembering. It wouldn't be inappropriate for a wizard to breed his own magebred familiar, since the process is undescribed and unlikely to be described in the future. It shouldn't take more than Improved Familiar to allow the wizard to take it. Imp Fam allows for more than just the small list of recommendations, so it is entirely allowable by the DM to give access to magebred familiars. |
