| Galen_Michael03-15-05, 03:09 AM | A retailer at the GAMA Trade Show has reported here (http://www.gamingreport.com/article.php?sid=16391&mode=thread&order=0) that WotC will release Magic of Eberron in October 2005! A) Does anyone have any more information? B) What does everyone want to see in this book? C) What does everyone think will actually be in this book? Galen |
| Doctor X03-15-05, 03:25 AM | This is the first I've heard of it. The title sounds like it might be more details on the role of magic in Eberron... maybe with examples of low-powered but practical items that simple magewrights could create. Such a book would be very useful, I think... Most of the magic items that have been showcased in the Eberron sourcebooks thus far have been beyond the magewright class's ability. |
| MarkB03-15-05, 03:46 AM | Things I'd hope to see in Magic of Eberron: More examples of wide-magic applications - everyday wondrous items using effects like prestidigitation, create water, heat metal etc. to provide comfort and convenience. Expanded mechanical and flavour information on dragonmarks - more Siberys shard items to exploit the powers of dragonmarks, perhaps even specialist arcane spells that only an appropriately Marked character can cast. Likewise, lots more details and uses for dragonshards in general, including more on binding, and some new warforged components. And of course, more on Artificers, including a few new infusions and perhaps a couple more homunculi. |
| Zedium03-15-05, 04:06 AM | Hmm, well I do suspect more uses for the elemental binding feat, which has few options at the moment. And more shard uses of course and maybe a proper pricing table for dragonshards. More artificer stuff, and artificer/magewright/wizard prcs could be fun in eberron. Also low level spells with a high utility level seem like a nice idea. |
| FlawedLogic03-15-05, 09:18 AM | I haven't heard anything about it, but if it even approaches the quality of The Magic of Faerun, it will be awesome. That is one of the juiciest books I've yet laid hands on. I'd like to see expansion on the nature and uses for dragonshards. I know that they're primarily a flavor device, but I'd like something a little more consistent in terms of what requires them and what doesn't. I'd also like to see some new artificer material. |
| Vharuck03-15-05, 10:12 AM | I too would love to see more mundane magical (oxy moron?) items that the magewrights build. I'd like to see the stats for every little detail, and have them to spark my mind in what certain societies would have (the upper levels of Sharn, having fountains that exude a sweet smell, might also have small holes in the ground that suck in dirt and trash for instance). I'd also like to see the type of magic the ancient giants used. Any race's magical flavor is something I would love. More spells of the Undying Court! More spells from the Dhakaani Empire (sp?)! And along those lines, I want fluff, crunch, and more of that good ol' psionic love for Sarlona and the Kalashtar. |
| Zalaz Mavi03-15-05, 10:16 AM | My enthusiasm for this book is high right now. But, a lot for me hinges on how Five Nations and Explorers' turn out. Those will demonstrate whether anyone other than Keith Baker is capable of capturing the essence of Eberron, in my estimation. After some thought, I decided that the published modules aren't indicative since they're geared toward the LCD and thus, too generic to serve as any sort of yardstick. I'll put Magic on my list of books to buy, but it'll be in pencil for the time being, pending the outcome of the earlier releases... |
| Lady Morn03-15-05, 10:40 AM | My enthusiasm for this book is high right now. I'm cautiously optimistic myself. While the modules and web articles are entertaining, I can't always get away from the feeling that they're just writing what they know (e.g. writing as if for FR then changing the names). I would point the finger at the great job Mr. Baker has done. Like Conan with R.E.H. or Star Was with George Lucas, the setting has become so tied to a single creator, that it's difficult to overcome the perception that others aren't up to the task of producing for it. I fully intend to give each release the benefit of the doubt. However, I'll wait until the books are out in stores and I have the chance to flip through them, as opposed to preordering as I've done with the ECB and "Sharn." |
| RadicalTaoist03-15-05, 10:52 AM | I expect some great stuff. What I'd really like to see is some options for Artificers who want to experiment with Psionic items and the Use Psionic Device skill. |
| polt03-15-05, 01:50 PM | Some info on manifest zones and dragonmarks (and abberant marks) would be cool. Maybe a chapter on the elite spellcasters of Eberron, like Mordain. |
| Siran Dunmorgan03-15-05, 03:43 PM | Some info on manifest zones and dragonmarks (and abberant marks) would be cool. Maybe a chapter on the elite spellcasters of Eberron, like Mordain. Oh, huzzah! More on Mordain "Fleshweaver" would certainly be appreciated. Of course, another part of that chapter would have to be devoted to the history and political machinations of the highest-level official NPC spellcaster on the continent of Khorvaire... who, you'll recall, is not Mordain. —Siran Dunmorgan |
| The White Sorcerer03-15-05, 03:50 PM | Hmm... Let's hope that Magic of Eberron coming out a month after Magic of Incarnum means they won't belong to the same series. |
| JohnnyONeal03-15-05, 03:56 PM | Thanks for the scoop, Galen! I'm definitely excited about this. While some comparison to Magic of Faerun is surely appropriate, I agree that it should have Eberron-specific content. Some ideas (most of them already mentioned) for the book's content: No more than a handful of magic-oriented prestige classes More information on "cultural magic," including examples of common magic found in urban areas Good-aligned necromancy spells for the Aereni, militaristic bard spells for the Dhakaani, and planar warfare spells for the Xen'drik giants and Gatekeeper druids More detailed information on Dragonmarks and the Dragonmarked Houses More bound elemental and Dragonshard magic items Also buried in the announcement is the name of the second "War-Torn" novel: The Orb of Xoriat and the name of the second Dreaming Dark novel The Shattered Land (though that was previously revealed). If you're wondering about any of the other releases mentioned in that announcement, here are some clarifications (with a dash of speculation): D&D for Dummies (April) - 384-page trade paperback "for beginners and current players" Magic Series: Magic of Incarnum (9/9) - magic item book, part of a series that will begin with Weapons of Legacy (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=products/dndacc/178620000) in July Fantastic Locations: Fane of the Drow (9/9) - a new series; it will be interesting to see if these are full hardcovers Forgotten Realms Adventure Path #1: Sons of Gruumsh (9/9) - pretty self-explanatory; cool that they're actually publishing adventures Genre Series: Heroes of Horror (10/14) - same series as Heroes of Battle (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=products/dndacc/860900000), just in time for Halloween Special Edition Dungeon Master's Guide (10/14) - DMG with golden edges and leather cover, just like the SE PHB D&D Gift Set (10/14) - not certain, but it must be different than this (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=products/dndcore/966480000) Fantastic Locations: Hellspike Prison (11/4) - given that this location has never been mentioned in any setting sourcebook, that suggests that the "fantastic locations" are setting-neutral Forgotten Realms: Champions of Valor (11/4) - along with Champions of Ruin (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=products/fracc/178720000), suggests that these are FR-specific versions of the books of Vile Darknes and Exalted Deeds Encyclopedia Series: D&D Spell Compendium (12/2) - almost has to be a big compilation of all 3.5 spells; interesting to see if it includes Magic of Eberron, if it takes errata into account, and if it includes any new content; can feat and class compendia be far behind? Quite a lineup. You've got to wonder when WotC is going to run out of D&D stuff to publish (other than Eberron, of course). |
| Ellipsis03-15-05, 07:58 PM | Some info on manifest zones and dragonmarks (and abberant marks) would be cool. Maybe a chapter on the elite spellcasters of Eberron, like Mordain. I think adding very powerful Non-Player Characters would take away that "players are really special" feel that is central to Eberron. Eberron, and a lot of pulp, involves the idea that the Player Characters (or central heroe[s]) are the ONLY people that can stop the big evil villain. And yes, Galen, thanks for the scoop. |
| Orion Polaris03-15-05, 09:11 PM | More in depth info about Bardic Music in Eberron. The ECS says that Bardic Music is unique, but it doesn't go into very much detail. I wouldn't mind more detail into bardic lore and magic, and I know some of my PC's wouldn't mind as well. |
| Twiggly the Gnome03-15-05, 11:37 PM | Hmm... Let's hope that Magic of Eberron coming out a month after Magic of Incarnum means they won't belong to the same series. Looking at the little codes at the front of the RPG releases we have: D&D Races of Eberron - 4/8 EBR Five Nations - 6/17 EBR Explorer's Handbook - 8/5 EBR Magic of Eberron - 10/14 So it looks like Magic of Eberron is an Eberron book. For now... :twitch: |
| DBlizzard03-16-05, 12:32 AM | No more than a handful of magic-oriented prestige classes I've mentioned before what a "Magic of Faerun" book could be (back when Races of Eberron was announced, IIRC). There are so many options. Personally, there are a lot of prestige classes I'd like to see in this book. I think there is a definite need for some that an artificer could branch into. I also would like to see a couple more that expand on Dragonmarked individuals (perhaps a couple could have different abilities depending on your Dragonmark), especially for Dragonmarked spell-casters. Add to that a few campaign specific prestige classes, for more general spellcasters and my ideal section would not be among the shorter of recent D&D releases. Of course, plans for future releases could modify my preferences. I'd personally like to see an organization book for Eberron (ala Lords of Darkness). That book could focus on the Houses, reducing the "need" for Dragonmark prestige classes in MoE. |

Well, i didn't said ADD new elite spellcasters, but info on some of those already mentioned in the ECS. Like Mordain for example, or Oklahoma or whatever the awakened tree's name was :D I don't want more than three-five prestige classes, we have a lot of those already. |
| Dansan03-16-05, 05:26 AM | I think that if the book is anything like Magic of Faerun, it should be great. What I'd like to see is: 1. Expanded descriptions of magical and psionical phenomena unique to Eberron (like spellfire in MoF) 2. Though I'm not a great fan of prestige classes, a few concerning the Artificer class would be nice. And combining psionics into this process would be great as well. 3. New spells and powers, of course. 4. A lot of magical/psionic items, since the offer has been meager thus far. Now that I read my own wishes, one wish tops them all. Since Eberron is a campaign in which psionics is supposed to be "common", I hope the book will not just be on magic, but on psionics as well. Unless there is a seperate Psionics of Eberron book coming out, but I find that unlikely. |
| Gez03-16-05, 06:07 AM | Things I'd hope to see in Magic of Eberron: And of course, more on Artificers, including a few new infusions and perhaps a couple more homunculi. Our chance to finally see him! http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/sharn_gallery/84599.jpg |
| The White Sorcerer03-16-05, 06:17 AM | The White Sorcerer's "IT MUST BE MINE!" list The chibiforged! |
| Joni-san03-16-05, 01:05 PM | Oooh! Neat'o! :D Spells, Magic Items, a PRC or two, Feats, Homunculi (Chibiforged!) and some misc. monsters. Cultural info on magic. Famous mages. What more to add to the "Things we desire"™ list? |
| DBlizzard03-16-05, 04:14 PM | Now that I read my own wishes, one wish tops them all. Since Eberron is a campaign in which psionics is supposed to be "common", I hope the book will not just be on magic, but on psionics as well. Unless there is a seperate Psionics of Eberron book coming out, but I find that unlikely. I think the most likely sourcebook to add Eberron specific psionics would be a Sarlona sourcebook. I doubt it's at the top of the list, but I would be suprised if it's not something WotC are considering. After all, once they have the Khorvaire covered, it's the next most likely continent to be covered. Xen'drik is supposed to be a "mystery." Argonessan sounds like it's an epic level adventure, or close, to adventure there (although WotC could update "Council of Wyrms" and make it Eberron specific). |
| Staffan03-17-05, 05:15 PM | I think the most likely sourcebook to add Eberron specific psionics would be a Sarlona sourcebook. I believe Races of Eberron will have some new psionic stuff in the kalashtar section. |
| superdeadsmurf03-17-05, 06:14 PM | I think the most likely sourcebook to add Eberron specific psionics would be a Sarlona sourcebook. New Powers are likely in every new Eberron book I'd bet. Somewhere like 1 power for every 10 spells; with more in Races of Eberron (I'd say about 1/5th of the spells chapter will be new powers) and a great deal more in any Sarlona sourcebook. |
| DBlizzard03-17-05, 07:42 PM | I believe Races of Eberron will have some new psionic stuff in the kalashtar section. I wasn't counting Races of Eberron since we know it will have some psionics in it. I still think we won't see anything significant, after Races, until a Sarlona sourcebook. |
| KP9103-17-05, 10:24 PM | Please have infusions, please have infusion. I doubt it will have infusions. Or at least not a lot, although a prestige class would really be nice. I'd really like to see the efigy master availible for artificers. |
| Euangelion03-17-05, 10:29 PM | Our chance to finally see him! http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/sharn_gallery/84599.jpg Man, that's a really big book! Just kidding. It's late. Going to bed now. |
| RamblingScribe03-18-05, 10:58 AM | I want to see improved versions of the Aberrant Dragonmarks. Craig Shackleton, The Rambling Scribe |
| Urko03-18-05, 12:11 PM | I hesitate to bring this up, considering all the furor over the Races of Eberron cover, but what the heck. I noticed there is another upcoming release in September called Magic of Incarnum. Does this mean there will be a generic Magic of... series and that we Eberron fans will once again be forced to get our content in a "plain brown wrapper?" On the other hand, I note the following designations in the listings in the article: D&D Races of Eberron D&D Magic of Incarnum EBR Magic of Eberron I'm guessing the initial three characters are a brand designation, so I may have answered my own question and there's probably no reason to worry. But it's not exactly unknown for plans to change. |
| greatfrito03-18-05, 01:09 PM | Oooh! Neat'o! :D Spells, Magic Items, a PRC or two, Feats, Homunculi (Chibiforged!) and some misc. monsters. Cultural info on magic. Famous mages. What more to add to the "Things we desire"™ list? I can't wait for them to release that little warforged look-alike homunculus just so that horrible name can go the way of the dinosaurs. |
