Wanted:
A group of seven mercenaries as diverse as possible to serve as pre-gen characters. They will be defending a village that fears them as much as needs their help.

Ideas, anyone?

Well, if you want the group to be feared as well as effective...

If memory serves, the number was 7 because they needed one samurai for each cardinal direction, two as reserves, and one in the center to direct.

We can call this four front line fighters, two rearguards, and a tactician. Just off the top of my head, and going for maximum diversity, how about...

North: A Darguun hobgoblin fighter, specializing in Trip and Disarm tactics. Once a professional slaver (and trained to take 'em alive), he has "reformed" and become a simple mercenary.

South: A Lhazaar human fighter, skilled in dirty fighting. Rather than the nimble pirate fencer, this is a shore leave fighter who goes for the eyes. Currently persona-non-grata in most of the finer ports, and looking inland for work.

East: A spear-wielding Talenta halfling barbarian, mounted on a fastieth. A bit of a sterotype for Eberron, actually, but definitely the sort to put the fear into simple human villagers. Known for the fearsome mask he wears during totemic trances (rages).

West: A Shadow March or Eldeen half-orcish ranger, skilled with the bow. Quiet and reserved, but not anti-social, he may be a "black sheep" member of House Tharashk, living the mercenary life to avoid the responsibilities of a Dragonmarked scion.

Reserve 1: A displaced Cyran dwarf artificer, trying to rebuild the personal fortunes lost in the mournlands. Having lost everything once, this riches-to-rags dwarf tends to create items geared towards protection, contingency, and redundancy.

Reserve 2: A Karrnathi human cleric of the Sovereign Host, and skilled combat medic. Though he began as a healer, his war experiences have exposed him to a great deal of death and undeath, and his interpretation of the Host is getting somewhat grim.

Center: An Aundairian human wizard who served as a combat arcanist and now can't see the point in going back to academics. Having served in a "signal corps," has skills reflecting knowledge of tactics and spells meant to facilitate coordination.

That's a just a rough suggestion. A little light on the magic side, but you can always swap out one of those fighters for another cleric or arcanist. I for one want to see what other people come up with.

The pre-gens from my Errand of Mercy one-shot game are a mercenary group. There are only six of them, and they're 6th level, but you might find some of them useful. You can find them on this site (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/m.blunden/dnd/errand/).
