Master Eberron Contest? Yay or Nay? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Hello, Eberron board frequenters.

I am quite sure that most of you recognize me, Vharuck. I ama frequenter of the D&D boards, most notable the "What's a DM to Do?" and the Eberron boards, but I do poke my nose in every so often at the Psionics, Magic, and Equipment & Combat boards to offer my opinion, clarify the rules, or pose a topic of discussion.

From my stay on the DM board, I must say that one of the best ideas on the boards makes its home there: the Master DM Contest.

This contest is much like any other D&D creative contest. The creator of the best original BBEG, magic weapon, spell, or similar thing wins. However, what makes it fun is that it imposes a time limit along with a list of odd requirements, some of which your submission must adhere to. This makes the contest not the "Submit that idea you made two months ago and have been tweaking" sort but rather like Junkyard Wars where one is handed a pile of random materials to create a working item that solves the problem.

My Proposal

Eberron is not "brand spanking new" per se, but we are now in a very important stage in the campaign setting's development: we, the players and DMs, are the primary creative minds. Up until now, we've struggled with comprehending what was handed to us. The rules, the races, the cultures, and the themes were questioned, prodded, examined, and detailed so that we now know what Eberron really is and it is settled in our imaginations.

But now I propose starting this contest on the Eberron boards to support the creative process, the evolution of Eberronian flavor, and the personal creative skills of the players themselves. By hosting this contest, I hope to both stimulate and facilitate ideas created by the players themselves that anyone can easily and happily use in their own Eberron campaign, and I also want to create the means by which you budding and inventive minds can flex and exercise your mental muscle.

What I need to know is, will you help me?

How You Can Help

Right now, I have a few themes in mind. The first contest's theme is already decided (by me), but I am very willing and eager to listen to your theme ideas. My current ones include:

- Items (weapons, wondrous adventuring items, everyday mundane items, everyday magical items, psionic items)
- Spells (new cleric spells from different religions, everyday use spells)
- NPCs (chance meetings on the road, BBEGs, BBLGs , plot hookers)
- Monsters (daelkyr-created aberrations, fiendish foes, Xen'drik natives, extraterrestrials)
- Prestige Classes (PC-available, non-combat NPC classes, antagonist classes)

Other ideas are sure to pop up in the maelstrom I have so affectionately deemed "my mind."

Judges

More importantly than ideas for contest themes, I need judges. As a judge, you will be expected to objectively read, re-read, evaluate, critique, and score every single entry for that contest. This is a big responsibility, so only offer your help if you are 99.9% sure that you will be able to perform the tasks expected of you. Judging these contests is something I will take seriously; I feel this is not a popularity contest and the best entry should win.

However, not all who volunteer will be accepted as judges. I will personally investigate all your recent postings in order to get an idea of your objectivity, ability to critique, work ethic, and understanding of the creative process. If I turn you down (and I will do so nicely, I am not out to make enemies), do not take it personally. Some are better judges; some are better contestants. Additionally, in my reviews of volunteers, I may PM posters who have interacted with the volunteer and ask a few questions so that I can get a second opinion on the volunteer if I feel that I may be biased. For those that I politely decline, remember that I will look very favorably on your submissions and other posts in these contests, as this shows a general appreciation for the contests and also that you are developing the skills to be used in judging.

Note that if you are a judge, you can not enter the contest you are judging. However, the position of judge is not permanent. You may judge the first two or three (or even just the first) contest and then opt not to judge the rest so that you can submit your own entries. The position of judge is not a special title or rank; it is a set of tasks you are expected to do.

There will be a hopeful minimum of 3 judges per contest and a definite maximum of 5. If need be, I may judge a contest alone. However, I will not assign more than five judges to any single contest, as this raises the chances of complications (personal problems, disagreements, etc.) preventing the contest from being effectively judged. There will always be an odd number of judges, and, barring any unforeseeable circumstances, I will always assign five judges to a contest.

Entry submission periods from multiple contests may overlap, so it is possible to be both a judge of one contest and an entrant in other simultaneously.

Now for My Personal Part

With the description out of the way, here is the list of posters I am offering the positions of judges for the first contest to. I chose these names because I feel they posses the experience, talent, objectivity, post frequency, and/or work ethic necessary for the rank. If your name is in the list, feel free to decline. If these posters do not respond to me directly, I may PM them with the offer. If no response is given, I will assume they decline. These posters may feel free to accept or decline the offer without worry of any hard feelings.

If your name is not in the list, there are no hard feelings. I may not know enough about you or your name may have slipped my mind. Anyone is free to offer their services as a judge, and should do so in this thread.

I offer the honor of judging the first "Master Eberron Contest" to the following people:
- Edymnion (How could I not?)
- Charles Phipps (An intelligent, objective, and even humble opinion is almost a guarantee from this guy)
- Streamweaver (The forerunner of the Eberron player-creation movement as far as I remember, Streamweaver has helped foster the creative playground of Eberron for everyone.)
- Gurv (Knowledegable in Eberron flavor and the rules, Gurv is a poster I consider most worthy of the offer.)
- Hellcow (A long shot with his busy schedule, but my respect and love for Eberron obligates me to offer.)
- MarkB (The detailed, extensive, and constructive work this poster has done is amazing!)
- MysticTheurge (This poster is not like I, and I like that. Whereas I produce a gem per dozen posts, this poster continually and consistently offers useful and productive views, opinions, and advice.)
- RadicalTaoist (A little bit of psionics nepotism taints this choice, but I have seen this man as possessing a valuable mind)

As I said, this is by no means an all-inclusive list. I probably left out many worthy posters and included a few who may not judge as well as I thought (though that says nothing of their worth to the Eberron community).

Moving on, I plan to utilize the entry requirements and scoring method of the "Master DM Contest."

Requirements: The requirements of the contest are useful in many ways. They help ensure a level playing field by preventing entrants from submitting ideas they've been developing for months while others are creating theirs within the small time frame of the contest. They also force (no better word for it) the entrants from submitting good ideas that follow all too common themes (ie. corrupt Silver Flame priests, Inspired-driven political plots, the "By the Sovereign! He's a changeling!" flu). Common traits and motifs throughout the entries also allow judges to more easily compare and effectively evaluate the contest, as it's only a contest when one can bestow the title of best on one submission (this is not a coddling game where "everyone wins"). Finally, and most importantly, the strange requirements will provide incentive for the contestants to develop their creative minds in an effort to appease the required number of characteristics, as it's common knowledge that set boundaries foster creativity.

As an example of the requirement method, here are the requirements for the current (and almost closed) Master DM Contest, "Master DM Competition #18 - Create a Special Event (Holiday/Festival/Celebration):"

In addition to the requirements, three of the eight elements from below must be used:

1) For some reason, it is illegal to celebrate the Special Event (i.e., Christmas in pagan Rome).

2) There is a unique game (possibly magical in nature) of chance/skill that is a big draw of the Special Event. This game needs to be detailed and a means of rules/mechanics/etc. must be documented. If spells are involved and/or allowed, they must be either Cantrip and/or 1st level.

3) The Special Event happens to fall during the time of a similar holiday/festival/celebration/etc. that is in rivalry with the current one. Explain how, why, and to what extent this rivalry came about.

4) The Special Event occurs each year but never at the same time period of the year.

5) The event involves a role reversal of some kind (i.e., horses ride in human-drawn carts).

6) A specific, local food or drink is a central point of the event (i.e., German beer festivals).

7) The Special Event involves the death of one or more willing victims.

8) The Special Event involves a re-enactment of a historical event.

See? These requirements will necessitate the creation of a unique, complex, and interesting holiday or special event! I suggest we follow the same method, but other suggestions are greatly appreciated and desired (though I am pretty fond of this method).

Permanent rules and requirements will be set in place as well. Plagiarism, like always and especially in the legal world of copyright laws, is not allowed and will be reported to the board moderators, the copyright holder, and, if possible, judicial bodies. Yes, I hate plagiarizers. Other rules will probably be (stolen and quoted from the Master DM Competition):

1) Each contestant may only submit ONE entry for judgment in each contest. At the conclusion of the contest they may submit further entries to contribute to the wealth of material available for other DMs. However, these “post-contest” entries will not be judged. Submitting multiple entries will result in disqualification.
2) Each entry should be original work by the author. The author may not submit his original idea for discussion or help from others.
3) After submitting an entry, each contestant has a 15 minute grace period in which to perform edits. This will allow a contestant to modify formatting or catch obvious errors that become apparent after they’ve hit the submit button. Any entry that is edited more than 15 minutes after the initial post will be disqualified! Any attempt to circumvent this rule (for example, submitting an entry, then deleting it, only to post it again 1 hour later) will result in disqualification.
4) Once scores are submitted to the coordinating judge, all scores are final.
5) Judges may comment on entries, but are not required to do so. If comments are made, they will be provided to the contestant upon request. Under no circumstances will a judge reveal the individual scores an entry received. The coordinating judge may release all the scores for an entry without identifying which judge gave each score. Participation in this contest assumes you are interested in comments regarding your work. If you would prefer not to receive comments, please indicate this clearly in your entry.
6) Contest rules may vary from competition to competition. At the beginning of each competition, special rules for that contest will be detailed. Failure to abide by these rules will result in a score of 0 for Use of rules, and may result in disqualification.
7) The message board Code of Conduct is in effect for all entries.

Right now, these rules are up for discussion and debate. However, once they are decided, they are tantamount to being set in indestructible, inerasable, immutable stone. I have found that most signs of a lax nature to the rules spark far more problems than they solve, so I take the route of "bite the bullet."

Scoring

This is a category both useful to judges (for obvious reasons) and contestants (since it's good to know what we look at and score your entry on). My proposed scoring system is as follows (yes, this is also largely based on the Master DM Competition). The descriptions of each category are contained in the S-Blocks beneath each category to save space and allow easier reading:

Fluff: 75 points
Creativity: 35 pts
Obviously this is the most important part of the contest. Creativity is the point of the contest's creation, process, and products. Creativity is not just something that hasn't been done before; creativity is an obviously well-formed idea that expands the reader's view of something. A lost changeling society on Xen'drik who ritually gouge their own eyes out is something novel; however, without creativity behind it, it is flat, boring, and one- or two-dimensional. Note that, even though the most important category, a perfect score in creativity does not alone guarantee success.
Thematic Consistency: 20 pts
Does the entry fit well within the contest's theme? If the contest is about a religious spell, is the submitted entry obviously about the spell (not about an NPC who happens to know the spell) and is the spell intrinsically related to a religion (not said NPC who also happens to pay lip-service to the Shadow)? Also, does the entry include the required amount of contest elements? Are they included seamlessly or do they resemble a scribbled note thumbtacked to a sign?
Adaptability: 20 pts
Another reason this contest will exist is to allow DMs who lack the creativity that some are practically overflowing with or DMs who lack the free time to create detailed ideas (as well as DMs like me who enjoy drawing from and bestowing my own sick twist to others' ideas) a valuable resource from which to draw quick and easy ideas to stick in their campaigns painlessly. Because of this, entries will be judged on how easily they fit into a wide array of campaigns. If your BBEG is a minion of a fiend who enjoys manipulating world events, he/she is pretty adaptable. However, if your BBEG is a Seren chieftain who never leaves his island hut, chances are much fewer DMs (without railroading, which is bad) will be able to use him/her. This category reflects the ability of the entry to plop into the common campaign without need for special work or excessive planning on the DM's part.

Crunch: 25 points
Technical/Rules: 15 pts
This is basically where the majority of the "crunch" as we know it falls. Does the entry follow the rules to the letter? Does the NPC have every feat and skill point assigned or explained? Does the new spell follow the template and protocol for previous spells? Are there any unanswered questions or problems arising from a rules point of view? Does the item list what it does, how often it does it, what the DC is, and what certain conditions or scenarios result in what? Personally, I feel that this is tied largely to the [B]Adaptability category; however, I not only allow but strongly suggest that aspects which work against both Adaptability and [/i]Technical/Rules[/i] penalize both scores. The reason behind this is because if an oversight on the contestant's part results in the DM having to devise and create the missing technical portion, it will not only have been lacking all the necessary technicalities and rules but also prevent the common DM from easily sticking it in with little work.
Clarity: 10 pts
I apoligize in advance to all posters for whom English is not their first language or maybe not even a language at all, but clarity is something I need to stress. Though this is an unofficial contest and it is largely a casual event I hope will be fun for all involved, a level of professionalism is necessary to make this work and be as great as it can be. Because of this, I strongly advise you to, after you finish typing your entry, run it through spell check and read it two times to find any grammatical errors or confusing sentences. Then go to sleep (delay this step if you are at work or in class, as this is generally frowned upon). The next day, read it again and, in painful detail, critique your work. You'll be amazed how many errors and problems you will find. Run it through spell and grammar check again, then submit. This category is meant (and I am not ashamed to say this) as a penalty category. If my eyes and brain hurt while reading what I assume is the work of a blind monkey with epilepsy or I spend more time than I deem necessary to decipher the meaning of something with both letters and numerals, this is where I will stick it to you. This is an easy 10 points, just be clean and submit a nice entry.

Total: 100 points

Now It's Your Turn!

Eberron wants you! *Insert picture of Hellcow pointing a cloven hoof*

Feel free to discuss, debate, and offer your opinions and/or suggestions on the creation of the Master Eberron Contest! I want this to be something cherished on the Eberron boards, but to do that I'll need the support of the thriving Eberron community!

Happy treasure-hunting and plot-exposing to all!

This sounds like a good idea and well thought out. I wasn't aware of the Master DM Contest. I'll have to check it out.

Here are some other ideas for contests:
- Patrons
- Fleshing out the Sovereign Host (we've had so much on the Silver Flame)
- Common Magic Items (more ways that wide magic make Eberron different)
- Dhakaani culture
- Orcs of Eberron (druids, the barbaric eastern cousins, etc.)
- New options for Warforged backgrounds

Hmmm, not bad, not bad at all.

I want to try to pioneer somewhat virgin soil, so I'm going to avoid patrons and other topics addressed specifically by UnCon. Common magic items I thought I listed in my post.

But fleshing out the gods (stick to general topics then we'll narrow them down absurdly with the elements ;)) sounds like it could be really interesting. Different strong cultures (not just Dhakaani but also Talenta, Aerenal, Valenar, and orc tribes) are a nice topic too.

Warforged backgrounds? Neeeeeeeeewwwww and orrrrrriginalllllll backgrounds?

.....

:D I love it!

Eh, I had been thinking about volunteering for the Master DM judging thing, and since its here on the Eberron boards now, I suppose I've got my chance. Sign me up as a judge :)

Topic I'd throw into the pot is:
-Unique characters based on vanilla builds

As in, a heavy armor wearing fighter with a longsword and shield.
Or a dwarven fighter with an axe.

All of those old, cliche, "been there, done that, repeatedly" class/race/equipment combos, but that are given a unique, flavorful treatment that really makes them stand out as being something special.

Or coming up with a themed set of magical gear that, when worn together, grant additional effects than they do seperately (like a flaming sword, fire immunity armor, and several other fire themed items that give the wearer the ability to cast Burning Hands and Fire Wall as spell like abilities when everything is worn together).

Huzzah!

Good to have you on board, Edy. As for your topic, I did something a lot like that in an online D&D game once. I made a Brelish razorclaw shifter fighter with a longsword and a heavy shield who wore a breastplate. He had the standard fighter feats and standard skills. His history summed up was:

Fought in the Last War. Not a very charismatic or noticeable guy. Lost a friend in the war, tore the murderer to shreds with claws, now is too ashamed to use them.

Yup, I gimped myself. It was fun! I was able to actually develop a character without having to worry about explaining the build. I was free to do anything!

I like this idea, I have a few constest ideas I think.

Best short 1st lvl adventure using random plot devices provided by the contest.

Best creature from a themed set using a vanilla base framework.

Racial feat contest.

Redesigned iconics from PHB into Eberron flavored characters

Thats all I have for now.

I'd be happy to help with judging as well.

I'd love to see people's ideas on fleshing out the other three continents further as well. So ideas like:

-Riedran Temples
-Sarlonan Villages
-Seren Tribes
-Xen'drik Ruins
-Chamber Dragons
-Frostfell monsters

And some more history stuff:

-First person accounts from the War of the Mark
-Lost battlefields of the Gatekeeper wars
-Legendary Commanders of the Last War

And arts are always good:

-Traditional Brelish Drinking Songs
-Famous Playwrights and their Plays
-Legends and Stories of Khorvaire

Let's see, that makes me, Edymnion, MysticTheurge, and Save-vs-DM. So one more judge is all that we need and then we can convene to hammer out the first contest. :)

Just a thought, but since Eberron is, after all, a full setting, I'd like to see a contest based on adapting something to Eberron that we don't already have in a dragonshard or Eberron Expanded article. Like a short writeup of how a certain soulmeld from Magic of Incarnum fits into things, or a Samurai from Complete Adventurer.

Ooh, I've got the perfect one for this, considering Halloween is coming up here shortly.

The Eberronian Boogy-Man.
What kind of tales do the children of Breland get told about the boogy man? Are they the same as the children of Karnath? Is the boogyman regional, or is there a "universal boogyman" that everyone on Khovaire has heard of?

I know I haven't been around long enough to merit nomination, but if you need a fifth judge (since odd numbers mean less ties), I do have the time (let's just say I love my job) and I am a bona fide "rules man" (not sure if that counts for me or against me) with decent grammar (if, perhaps, an unhealthy fixation on parenthesis)... and most importantly, I like Eberron very much (...yay!).

Parenthesis are the writer's crack, I swear.

Ok, you're on. The final judge has been chosen. The current judges will be listed in the original post. The topic will be discussed and decided only between the judges (so as to keep with the spirit of no pre-planning), followed by the required elements. Contestants will not know the first contest's theme or elements until the contest opens.

Still up for discussion are the minor details are the exact rules and any questions of certain situations that may complicate things as well as unglamorous but necessary details.

The rules I listed are OK by me (kinda obvious), and I feel that the contests should run for at most 2 weeks. This may be a little long, so it's really up to debate.

Anyone else think of something to add?

Artificer Groups with no connection to Cannith.

Eberronian creation and apocalypse myths besides the three progenitor dragon thing.

New kinds of homunculi for enterprising artificers. (ph43rbots!)

More Quori ebedded shards.

Mysticism in Eberronian Religion. (i.e. Kaballah in Judaism.)

Artifacts of the Quori, Daelkyr, and Rajahs.

Causes of the Mourning.

Airship gear. (Every airship needs some kind of cannon.)

Best short 1st lvl adventure using random plot devices provided by the contest.

I'll second this idea. I'd say that at least 2 major organizations need to be involved in the adventure in some way (say perhaps the Aurum and the Lords of Dust, or the Children of Winter and the 12, or Kiaus and the Wayfinders Guild). Orgs to be chosen specifically for the contest so they are the same for all participants.

I love Edy's boogyman idea as well. Perfect for a Halloween contest :D

I missed this thread until today, but it looks like a great idea. I'd be happy to help out with judging in future competitions if needed - but is it okay for those designated as judges to take part in a contest, if they're not judging that particular one?

Other competition ideas:

Eldritch Machines
Murder mysteries
Urban locations
Conspiracies (weave a plot that connects any three or more seemingly-unconnected known groups or individuals)
Build a trade caravan
New bound-elemental items (best leave this one until after Magic of Eberron is released)
Unlikely friends in Khyber

The first topic has been chose and the judges are hammering out the elements as we speak (as I write).

The theme is..... FOR ME TO KNOW AND YOU TO FIND OUT! :P

You'll learn the theme when the contest starts, and not until then. Once the theme is announced, entries will be accepted so everyone has an equal start.

As for when the contest will start, we're shooting for Monday at the latest. Hopefully (and with the rate it's going now) Friday may be within reach.

Well, i hate the clarity section for obvious reasons, but i understand why is there..so..is the competition starting today? or do we wait a little more time?
also, i think it's a very very good idea, good thinking, Vharuck, this will be fun. And usefull.
Ho, and i love the idea of the boogeyman, here in venezuela we have only "el coco" wich translates to "the cocount" not very scary if you ask me. ;)
