Hey guys

Can we make a thread of cool preferably non combat encounters, or possible combat encounters where there is a chance at talking your way past the situation or some alternative to combat. Combat encounters can be fun and are pretty easy to come up with, non combat encounters are often very enjoyable if they are based on a good solid idea but they are harder to invent. Help me out here and describe some of your most memorable encounters.

For instance this one we ran into recently:

We spotted what seemed like a campsite, everything left behind and undisturbed but noone in sight. As we approached we spotted two boots with part of the lower leg still in them but the rest of the body was nowhere to be seen.
A few hundred meters outside the camp we found a blackened burned body (feet still attached), the man's bow was damaged and arrows covered in strange markings lay scattered about.

(I took the arrows and was foolish enough to use them a few days later when we were hit by a swarm of harpies)

cheers

Would this (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=569576) be what you're looking for? :)

I ambushed a lightnening rail the PC's were riding.

A group of 3 characters uprooted and dragged many large trees into the path of the rail. The sorcerer then set his familiar to watch for the lightning rail. When it was nearly in view he threw up an illusion to hide the trees.
KABLAMO!

Then the three mounted up on mage bred hourses and booked it out while confusion reigned. The fun part was that I had the bound elemental half escape. So his top half was free and pounding everything it could reach while the bottom half was still bound to the front of the train with the conductor trapped inside. The party of course, were the only people there to rescue the poor little House Orien member. (So they thought... actually he was already dead.)
