First we had the Stargate (http://www.sg-999.org.uk/stargate2.jpg) in Races of Eberron (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/roe_gallery/88210.jpg)

Now we have This (http://www.stguardian.to/pics/gofbig.jpg) in Forge of War (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/ForgeWar_Gallery/105872.jpg)

And what's wrong with that? That's a negligible excerpt from the Forge of War, which only fills about 2 pages... out of 158 spelbinding ones. Having just bought the book, I am positively surprised by it. It contains all the goods that I was hoping for.

Dude, how many forms do you expect portals to take?
It's not like either of those pictures is a direct ripoff of Stargate or Star Trek.
They're portals.
I think you're picking some serious nits there ;)

The book's out already?

My FLGS gets their deliveries later today. Please, oh please let them have it!

Anyway, care to give us some information? :)

I got my book 2 days ago. Anyway, of course, I can give a brief overview/summary of the book's content.

*Clears throat*

The book consists of 4 chapters; The Course of the War, A Guide to the Last War, Heroes of the Last War, and The Last War Campaign.

The Course of the War is about, well... the course of the war. This chapter presents a to us a chronological overview of the different battles and events that took place in the Last War - very exciting indeed.

A Guide to the Last War adresses key locations, important organizations, and mention-worthy relations between regions (as well as dragonmarked houses) during the Last War - very insightful, if you run a war-centered campaign.

Heroes of the Last War is a chapter that's basically dedicated to your war-affected character. It presents a wide variety of different ideas and designs for your character, so that you can better accentuate his or hers participation in the Last War. It also gives us new spells and magic items.

The Last War Campaign is a nice supplement if you run a Last War campaign, since it deals with the different materials that you potentially could use, in order to optimize your campaign.

That's about it ;)

Lucky you! My FLGS didn't get it this week, and is not sure whether they will be getting it next Wednesday either, since they will be off for holidays the day after. With some bad luck, I'll have to wait until July 11th to get this! :weep:

The Course of the War is about, well... the course of the war. This chapter presents a to us a chronological overview of the different battles and events that took place in the Last War - very exciting indeed.

How long is this chapter? I assume they could not have detailed all the years in the way they did with the extract, as that would have ended up with much more pages than the book has got.

Oh, and please tell me the maps in the book do not make errors like the one in PGtE p.65, where Thrane's capital of 500 YK, Daskara, is marked as being in Aundair. Btw, was Arcanix in Thrane before the war started?

A Guide to the Last War adresses key locations, important organizations, and mention-worthy relations between regions (as well as dragonmarked houses) during the Last War - very insightful, if you run a war-centered campaign.

Sounds great too. Do the organisations work with the affiliation system (like the Order of Rekkenmark in Five Nations)?

Does it detail all the dragonmarked houses, at least to some extent, or only the most influential one in the war (Deneith, Cannith, Phiarlan/Thuranni)? In particular, are there some interesting bits about Vadalis?

Heroes of the Last War is a chapter that's basically dedicated to your war-affected character. It presents a wide variety of different ideas and designs for your character, so that you can better accentuate his or hers participation in the Last War. It also gives us new spells and magic items.

Are the spells and magic items any good? Oh, and in the previews they mentioned battle scars. Is that a new system with rules, or is purely flavour?

That's about it ;)

Sounds great, and thanks very much for indulging my impatience, enthusiasm and jealousy at people who already have this book ;)

Nice. I'll have to check and see if anyone in town has copies. Any Prestige Classes or Feats?

I don't have the book (see above), but there are no new feats or PrCs mentioned in the consolidated lists (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/arch/lists), which have already been updated for this month and contain the new monsters of Forge of War.

How long is this chapter?

The Course of the War chapter roughly covers 35 pages, and only the major, most influential, battles have been thoroughly highlighted, which still is something. As you mentioned, detailing every single event of the war would probably result in a rather lengthy book (which isn't bad , of course, but yeah). The given descriptions of the different battles and events are, as I mentioned, pretty extensively written.

Oh, and please tell me the maps in the book do not make errors

I haven't come across any, but then again, I haven't truly delved into the book yet.

Btw, was Arcanix in Thrane before the war started?

I can't tell for sure since the maps don't depict cities, but by the looks of it, I would assume that Arcanix was in Thrane before the war, yes.

Do the organisations work with the affiliation system (like the Order of Rekkenmark in Five Nations)?

No, unfortunately not.

Does it detail all the dragonmarked houses, at least to some extent, or only the most influential one in the war (Deneith, Cannith, Phiarlan/Thuranni)?

Yes it does. The most influential ones are granted more wording than the other ones, but they are all described in a fitting approach, mainly unfolding their roles before, in, and towards the end of the war.

In particular, are there some interesting bits about Vadalis?

Well, depends. They are not given much text, but a fun read, nevertheless - throughout the war, they were approached by the other nations with some rather peculiar requests. I personally loved the part in this book about Thuranni and Phairlan, though.

Are the spells and magic items any good?

Haven't read about the spells since I'm not that interested. The magic items are... mediocre, I'd say. Some are better than others.

Oh, and in the previews they mentioned battle scars. Is that a new system with rules, or is purely flavour?

Pure flavour - the battle scars are merely guidelines that you can follow for RP, should you want to apply one to your character. Kinda like the first chapter in PGtE - I liked it, though, but nothing you couldn't have come up with yourself.

Any Prestige Classes or Feats?

Nope, no prestige classes, no feats. Which is partially why I like this book - it's fantastically fluff-based.

That's dissapointing. Not the fluff, which sounds great, but the lack of PrCs. I think that this will be the first Eberron book without any. I'm sure the DM will purchase it, so I'll borrow it from him to read the fluff, but I doubt I'll pick up a copy myself without some satisfying crunch.

Like you nicely mentioned yourself, every Eberron book already has prestige classes, which is why their exclusion in this book is astoundingly nice for a change. To be honest, the book doesn't need prestige classes. Instead, this book features battle scars - surely, these aren't rules, crunch, or prestige classes, but they definitely give your character an electrifiyng touch, and substitute the prestige classes adequately.

06-13-07, 02:29 PM
But yes, this book favours fluff over crunch, and if you're a crunch-person, you might want to consider borrowing it before a purchasing it.
Gafgarion

06-13-07, 04:05 PM
I've got nothing against fluff. I just like having some of both. I liked Faiths of Eberron for that very reason. Some really great Feats and PrCs and some great fluff. Same with Secrets of Sarlona. It's more a question of do I borrow this so that I can read and enjoy it, or do I need to purchase it so as to have a handy reference. With it being low on crunch, it might be more the former than the latter. Either way, I look forward to giving it a read, as I love the setting and the more of its history I can read, the better. :)

It's been a peeve of mine for a while, two steps forward, 1 back. The wonderful write up of the Kalashtar got the go'uld/tok'ra dichotomy out of my head, only to have the gate (and the druids not able to think of burying the thing?)

Now I have the Guardian of Forever stuck into the book I've been waiting over a year for. Already preordered from Amazon, eagerly waiting for. The fact that it seems to be all fluff warms my heart.

Please don't think I popped up here just to gripe about the art. I wholeheartedly love Eberron, run games in it and have yet to be disappointed by the quality of the sourcebooks. When I get FoW, I will be eagerly digesting its contents. It's just, irritating when you get people who look at the lightning rail, the warforged, airships etc and think steampunk/sci-fi, and then get things that escaped from Star Trek.

As to 'how many ways can you draw a portal' how about not in the same torus shape, with the same broken pillars as in the Guardian.

Dude, how many forms do you expect portals to take?

I personally prefer oblongs.
Square "window" portals are awesome if you can see what's on the other side like an actual window.
I've always wanted to see a portal that was MC Escher esque.
Maybe something more of a star shape.
Or one that was like a pool of water on the ground you'd jump into and fall into another world.
Or a TV you could crawl into.
Or a Spyglass you look through but you'd see what the other world looked like from that position rather than your own.
Or just a simple wooden door you'd walk through and then you'd be on the other side somewhere else.
Or... well just visit Sigil and spend eternity trying to find every crazy portal and it's key. :)

And yeah I was thinking the same thing when I saw the Guardian of Forever there. Oh excuse me the "Gate of Eternity" They even name them so that there can be no doubt of it's influence. Not only does it look exactly the same in form but in function. The way the gate appears to be working is the same way the Guardian would look when it was operating.

Are there any new equipment or magic items that we can look forward to? One thing I noticed in the Art Gallery was an image of banners and flags (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/ForgeWar_Gallery/105863.jpg). Do these have magical effects like the standards presented in Heroes of Battle?

There certainly are. From crests and warforged components to banners and war regalias of Galifar.

I haven't read Heroes of Battle, but yes, these banners do have magical effects when held high on the battlegrounds and warfields.

Are the Crests special enhancements to add to a shield? That's what they are in Heroes of Battle.

I'm hoping they aren't simply reprinted and are in addition to those in HoB. I'm really excited about the synergy between these two books! As I've noted elsewhere, even the mentioning in one of Keith's Dreaming Dark novels of blast disks as an item commonly used during the Last War was a nice nod to that sourcebook.

Ya, I got mine a couple of days ago as well, and it's awesome. The details of many of the major battles and "speculation" by the scholar writing the book make it a very good read. The spells are mostly on the useful side, except exploding pinecone, which is kinda strong, and cool sounding. There are three legacy items, one of which is from the Eberron novels and some decent equipment including warforged rogue set of lockpicks that are better than normal mwk lockpicks. Otherwise, it's just plain fun to read this book. I want to try to reenact the battle of Sharn.

Okay, I'll cop to it. My art notes, when I turned in that section, actually referenced the Guardian of Forever. :hides:

I intended it as a combination homage and Easter Egg for the Trek fans among us. It's not meant to imply anything more than that, though, and you certainly shouldn't feel that time portals have to look like that, though. :)

Thank you for the honest cop. Maybe I'm over sensitive, but it's frustrating to have to argue that Eberron is -not- robots and steam punk.

That and it stands on its own to me. I didn't see it as an Easter Egg, I saw it as sloth. Maybe I should stop thinking of ideas for Paizo's Pathfinder so much.

Beautiful, Mr. Marmell! Somebody finally jumped on a bullet! I think it's fine, by the way. Great to see a little bit of trek poke its head into pop culture in these dark days.

My FLGS lost my business after some pot to kettle comments from the clerk (I don't mind fat jokes but could the guy at least have been original) but I checked the shipping for my area, I should have it Tuesday. Looking forward to the new fluff and crunch, one question, are there any things on elemental bound vehicles of war, tanks or the like? I just wonder because I've been playing with a few ideas but I was holding off on doing too much work before I knew what was in this book if it was covered at all.

Why was this jerk calling you fat if he himself is fat? (That's what it sounds like). Not to mention not a good way to garner buisness. Lastly is he the boss? If not tell the boss one of his employees just cost his store some buisness.
OzyBurrfoot

06-20-07, 11:15 AM
Yeah, I highly agree that if the clerk isnt the boss, you should definitely go to the boss and tell him what was said. I worked in a gaming store for about 6 months and I know my boss was very careful for himself and employees not to ostracize any customers.

(There was an exception, but that bastard had it coming... )
