I have read all the Eberron novels, and I have somehow missed the new term for platinum in every book...

Platinum = ???
Gold = Galifar
Silver = Sovereigns
Copper = Crowns

Can someone fill in my blank?

I don't have my ECS, but is this official in the game books, if so what page?

Where can that be found? (gamebook or novel)

It seems odd that all the other's still have the common money abbreviation (GP, SP, CP), except that one.

Yeah, I always say "It's easy to remember, because they all start with the same letter except for the biggest one, dragons, which you can remember as the biggest monetary unit because dragons are REALLY BIG."

It came from KB as an idea...

I wonder if you might then refer to them as "marks".

I like how the novels used the new terms, so-in-so threw down 4 sovereigns on to the table. He handed the barmaid 6 crowns and so on.

I guess I stumble on the term dragons, and almost want to go a step further, for my world perhaps.

If we assume that only the most powerful entities even produce their own platinum coins, we might assume that dragonmarked houses produce platinum coins with the symbol of their dragonmark. Almost a pride thing.

As a result, they are still platinum, but as a result of the symbol, folks began referring to them as "marks"...

I guess, I'm just not happy with the term for Platinum, the others work so well.

However, thank you all for responding.

So do all the nations have the same monetary names, then? That seems strange to me. Especially for nations not derived from the original 5. And since the start of the last war, I could see at least nomenclature changes for nationalistic reasons. Not that I am questioning anyone, y'all have read the novels and I haven't, it's just something I thought of.

I have read every Eberron novel released to date and so far yes. However, keep in mind, each one has been from the point of creatures based in or around the major nations. I would think those who use the coins but call them otherwise, are likely non-nation states, or "lesser" areas.

I would, in my opinion, say this is likely very possible based on the history behind the names... and the breath of the reach of the great nations. Apart from the reference to the great kingdom of Galifar, none of the names show favor to any one nation and as a result probably have little cause for argument.

Galifar, Sovereigns, and Crowns.

In my world, the Dragonmarked houses are not only powerful, but a bit pompous. As a result, the Platinum = Dragons connection is better suited for a pompous dargonmarking on the platinum coin, called "marks" to symbolize that the Dragonmarked house are "above" both king, country and in some cases deity.

The term platinum dragon can be found in the appendix and glossary of the novel City of Towers. I don't remember if it's shown up in a sourcebook - it might be in PGtE, but I'm not sure.

I'm guessing it doesn't get more official than that...I feel honored! :D

I think that it would make sense that dragons are platnium. not many regular workers get that kind of pay, and the dragon marked houses make most anything that would be payed in dragons. so only government's the elite and dragonmarked houses use dragons.:D

But basically all of Khorvaire WAS Galifar before the last war.

Breland controlled Zilargo and Droam, Cyre controled the Talenta Plains and what is now Darguun and Valenar, Karrnath controled what is now the Mror Holds and the Lhazaar Principalities, Aundair controlled the Reaches... Thrane... well they're Thrane...

The only things not on that list are the Shadow Marches, The Demon Wastes, and Q'barra.

The Demon Wastes don't really need a currency. The Shadow Marches have no government that would mint currency and the locals still barter. Q'barra was basically savage until people settled it and made 'new Galifar'.

There is only ONE Banking system (House Kundarak).... Why would there be more than one system of currency.

None of the countries print money... there is no paper money... there are however Bank Notes. Because House K has an absolute monopoly over banking they're the ones that make the notes... they're the ones truly in control of Eberron's economy.

So long as House K is the one that takes the gold, makes bank notes for said gold, turns around and loans out said gold... and sets their own interest rates for said gold... they're the ones that determine the worth of said gold.

Before the Last War it was the Kingdom of Galifar and the shared culture across an entire continent that kept the currency the same... after the war... its House K that determines that.

I don't know the economic history of other countries but I know that the dollar wasn't standardized by the US until after the Civil War... before that it was Banks that printed money based on gold value in that state. However there were tons of different banks... in the United States where as in Galifar there was only ONE, Kundarak... so it makes sense for the value of money to be standardized.

That and it just makes the game easier.

That sounds like the crux of this issue, and hearing it stated now I get it. And feel a little dumm. :surrender
