my kids and i are trying the eberron setting. we are saving up for books beyond ECS ... until then, what source(s) on the site or in the forrums can i use to check if a standard d&d race or monster exists in Eberron? (currently i am curious about titans, the non-wf ones)

also, as we buy the next sourcebooks, which ones help most finding these answers?

thanks in advance

If I remember right, the Players Guide to Eberron has the answer on the Titan question. But really, go nuts with it. They say that if it is in D&D then it belongs in Eberron. So why not place those Titans in, saw, the Demon Wastes, or the always handy scape goat, Xen'drik?

"If it exists in D&D it has a place in Eberron." Everything can exist there (doesn't mean it does in everyone's game but the design philosophy states anything in D&D can be placed somewhere in Eberron if need be).

Take a look at the Dragonshards (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/archeb/ds). Articles written by setting creator Keith Baker expanding and illuminating corners of Eberron... They offer wonderful insight on the cultures, and creatures of Eberron.

You will find that for non standard races they're generally placed either in Droaam (a territory with an extensive culture of Monsterous Humanoids. Medusa, Minotaur, Gnolls, etc are all citizens there). Or across the sea on the continant of Xen'drik (where the Giant empire used to be, wild and savage... almost anything can be found somewhere in that land twisted by magic). Or they could just be integrated into everyday society, like the Kenku.

Some suggested reading on how things fit in Eberron.

Titans.... I would put them in Xendrik as un-devolved giants

Titans are chaotic extraplanar outsiders, they exist in the plane of Kythri, the Churning Chaos (Eberron Campaign Setting pg 96).

That's all that's officially known about them in Eberron, so far as I know.

Xendrik Giants ancestor are known as titans, but it could be only a scholar term to differenciate the degenarated giant of Xendrik...

Player's Guide mentions there's a scholarly debate rageing about whether there ever was a pregenitor race of Giants. Some scholars believe that Frost, Hill, Fire, Cloud, Stone were always separate species just as Elves, Dwarves, Humans, Gnomes, and Halflings.... all of the humanoid type are separate.

No one actually knows, not even the giants (though they may believe)

Its 100% unofficial, but if you click the Ecologies link in my sig its got most of the Monster Manual done. We did about half of MM2 and then everything ground to a halt.

Thanks, everyone. Scouring all i can read online every free moment i can find (dragonshards, forums, etc) hoping i'll be ready to DM.

As for the giants, now i am considering how well the various types might cooperate - if, say, my adventuring party could encounter a neutral band of ragtag giants. (some devolved and others not) Perhaps, instead, even a council of sorts...

I could have sworn that somehwere in Secrets of Xen'drik it mentioned that its not at all odd to find several giant species working together in small bands. I just can't find the page referance.

A good way to think of the various giant species is to not think of them as monolithic entities unto themselves (as monster manual entries often portray monters as), think of the various Giant subspecies like the various humanoid races.

It wouldn't shock you in Khorvaire to find an elf, a dwarf, a halfling, a human, and a gnome working together.

So it shouldn't shock you to see a cloud giant, a fire giant, a forrest giant, a sand giant, and a hill giant working together.

I just would like to know where you all would think would be a good place to drop the Dromites (From XPH) into the world.

Part of me was thinking of having them come from Sarlona, but I'm not sure if that's optimal. I just am looking for opinions.

Check out the Dragonshard Psionics in Eberron (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ebds/20060925a):

Sarlona: The Kingdom of the Mind

Sarlona is the seat of psionic power in the Eberron Campaign Setting. This is the homeland of the Inspired and the kalashtar, and duergar, dromites, elans, maenads, and half-giants are all said to live on or under Sarlona. The elders of Adar believe that the continent once was tied closely to Dal Quor, and that this explains the plethora of psionic creatures. However, all manifest zones linked to Dal Quor faded when the plane was thrown out of alignment.

Regardless of the reason, Sarlona is home to many psionic creatures, and it is the simplest place to introduce material from the Expanded Psionic Handbook or Complete Psionic. A Dungeon Master who wishes to restrict the role of psionics in her adventures can insist that psionics have some tie to Sarlona; a changeling who wishes to become a telepath may have to find a kalashtar teacher in Adar, just as the Shadow (of pulp fame, not the Dark Six!) had to travel to Tibet to learn to cloud men's minds.

The realms of Sarlona and the powers of its inhabitants will be explored in greater detail in the upcoming sourcebook, Secrets of Sarlona.

Another place you might want to drop them is in Xen'drik - you could place them near Half-giant settlements, left over from the Giant civilization. Or you could place them in Q'Barra. Anywhere, essentially, that's exotic, as they're a fairly exotic species.

So what about setting specific races or monsters from other settings? Like Draconians? Probably argoness? What of Kender?

Generally I'd leave stuff from otuer settings out, but that's just me. One could place blatently setting specific stuff in Eberron. After all if its in D&D it can find a place in Eberron.

Draconians. Thematically their role is largely filled by Warforged, race with magical origin created for war, eventually tries to make a place in a world for themselves after the war.

At first glance one could think that they have no place in Eberron, and honestly as much as I do like Dragonlance and the Kang's Regiment series... I wouldn't ever use them.

However if you wanted to my suggestion would be to have their main origin be the same. They are soldiers created twisting unborn dragons with foul magics into disposable shock troops.

The question is when and where would anything ever have the power of the cause to do something like that. The natural answer is Demons. So in the Age of Demons some powerful fiend stole a lot of unborn dragons and turned the unborn dragons into Draconians, your Baaz, Kapak, Bozak, Sivak, and Auraks, heck if you have the material printed by Sovereign press you can throw the cromatic frost, venom, vapor, lightning, and fire draconians in there too.

So Draconians were disposable footsoldiers in the war between demons and dragons to more or less horrify and tick off the dragons.

As for their place in Eberron today I can only imagine three scenarios for their existance.

a) Most likely, bound down in Kyber with their demonic masters, or in the demon wastes somwhere.

b) Pittied by the dragons they were allowed to continue their existance after being freed from their demonic masters, and now live in Argonessen as one of the many layers of 'protection' shielding Argonessen from the outside world.

c) Escaped demonic rules and live in Xen'drik for whatever odd reason.

Like I said, I wouldn't use them but there is a scenario for their existance.

As for Kender... heh. I remember awhile back on a similar thread someone making the suggestion of putting Kender as a varient race of halflings on Xen'drik. No wait hear this one out. Imagine trekking through the harsh jungles of Xen'drik fighting giants and hostile drow, then coming across a friendly tribe of halflings, who use weapons like the hoo-pak, and cha-pak. They're primitives, they seem friendly, their villiage such as it is is haphazardly constucted... and they still have no concept of ownership. The party thinking they found a haven are more or less stripped withing minutes their 'stuff' getting passed gleefully around the camp.

If they ever make it abck to civilization or speak with non-hostile natives they'll learn those small creatures have been considered vermin since the Age of Giants, utterly fearless and ungodly annoying, they're like roaches... no matter how hard you try you just can't wipe them out.
