More Modern eberron [Archive] - Wizards Community

I was just wondering if anyone has taken the concept of eberron which i find to be a dnd game with modern sensibilities and a logical background, and taken that even farther?

I'm not to warried about technology ( if thats your bag fine but its not mine) or magic but more the social institutions that mark modern society.

Namely Paper Money and Corporations

The houses are already almsot corporations, so would it produce any real change to take it all the way and remove the House and Leave the House Name Corporation. I think it feels right but i'm just wondering if corportion would ( or should) have any more effects namely what if the dragonmark conglomerate demanded in on the treaty of thronehold talks and ended up with almost as much power as a nation ( Much like modern Internation corporation)

Also i think that paper money could make for the first very first stage of an industrialization phase in Eberron. Its kind of a requirement for a modernesque society yet it's missing which i find odd. No need to change anything but the carrying capacities. Besides who doesn't want to have a dwarf working for the man carrying a huge breifcase of GP bills. Keep the Money on the Gold Standard and it should produce almost no effect except for enabling transactions as far as i know, however if you take it off the goldstandard Inflation could almost be as big an enemy as war itself ( and also being a realistic thing in that kind of enviroment not to mention making the DMG pricing scheme a little more sensical)

Just some idea's hope to get some responces

07-08-05, 02:05 AM Bah never underestimate the evil of the corperation, if I had to place an alighnment on most of the modren ones in all seriousness I would lable them lawful evil, or possibly even neutral evil.....which is why they would make great Big bad evil guys, or groups I guess they would be groups. Sorry way off topic I don't really like paper money in real life, I love the nice roundess of change but I do like corperations(as villians I hate the real ones).

07-08-05, 02:09 AM Eberron already has what amounts to paper money in the form of Kundarak notes of credit, so governments also issuing notes of credit (as in "This note is legal tender for all debts, public and private") might be a logical progression, though the obvious question would be "Why?", since Kundarak already does it, and their financial base is more solid than most of the nations of Khorvaire, thanks to the financial burdens of the Last War.

Again, in essense (as you said) the DM houses are basically corporations already, so if it's just a name thing, than you're free to do whatever you want in your game. But I seriously doubt that WOTC is going to change the name of House Sivis to Sivis Corporation any time soon! ;) Also, there are whispers in Deneith that perhaps it is time to seize land and form a Dragonmarked Nation. Sounds like there's some good parallel thinking going on between you and the designers of Eberron.

This is exactly how Earth paper money began - goldsmiths would issue receipts for gold lodged in their safes, which would be redeemable against gold in another goldsmith's safe in another city. As the receipts became a de facto medium of exchange in and of themselves, paper money was born. The state/government issued money is a much later development (indeed some of the more civilised nations, such as Scotland, still have paper money issued by banks rather than irresponsible governments).

Ebberron doesn't have to use the gold standard, however - some kind of "Magic Standard" might be another possibility (although I confess I'm just thinking out loud, I can't think how). This would allow the other houses to issue their own notes - control of the money supply is a powerful economic weapon, and I can't see the other houses sitting still while Kundarak effectivlely and quietly assume control of the entire exchequer of Khorvaire (Kundarak themselves may have ideas on this subject).
